Armstrongs incredible 1999 win sent Treks designers and production artists scrambling to develop new collateral featuring the rider resplendent in his yellow jersey and riding his Trek OCLV carbon bike. Following the second victory, Burkes team was again busy creating posters, cards, and banners to commemorate the win. This time Burke and her design team turned to Adobe InDesign software.

story of Lance Armstrong, the Texas cyclist who overcame advanced testicular cancer to win the 1999 Tour de France, one of sports most grueling events. He then repeated the feat in 2000, firmly establishing himself as one of cyclings greatest riders. Armstrongs second win meant increased exposure for professional cycling in the United States. For the graphic design department of Trek Bicycle Corporation in Waterloo, Wisconsin, it meant late nights and frequent trips to the local espresso joint. Thats because for the second straight year, Armstrong had ridden to victory on a Trek road bike. Lances win definitely meant a little bit of work, says Treks graphic design production manager, Tricia Burke, taking a break from communicating with the team of photographers dispatched to capture Armstrongs win. Even though Trek is already one of the largest bike manufacturers in the world, with subbrands such as LeMond, Gary Fisher, and Klein, Armstrongs propensity for winning presents a major promotional opportunity.

For the Armstrong collateral and other jobs, Trek submits Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) files, as well as native InDesign and Illustrator files, to Sells Printing in New Berlin, Wisconsin, for output to platesetters. Were just about to the point where we will submit all of our jobs in Adobe PDF, Burke says. Thats fine with Sells Printing. Sells performs prepress services for the majority of its clients, and its preflighting times drop dramatically when jobs are sent in Adobe PDF. For some customers, Sells can now send out proofs the same day it receives the job.
The Trek design team lays out jobs such as this sell sheet in InDesign, and then submits files to the printer in Adobe PDF for computer-to-plate output.
James Wamser, manager of corporate training at Sells, recommends InDesign and an Adobe PDF workflow to Sellss customers for more efficient production and printing. We see the benefits for the person laying out the pages, Wamser says of InDesign. For Treks designers, anything that saves time is worth pursuing. After all, theyre racing to keep up with Lance Armstrong, and he shows no signs of slowing down.

The designers do much of their layout work with Adobe InDesign software. Burke and her team switched to InDesign from QuarkXPress because of its tight integration with Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop software, its support for multiple undos, and its typography features. With Adobe InDesign, we can produce an ad in approximately half the time it took using our old system, says Burke. Being able to shave two to three hours off an ads production really increases the productivity of my entire design team, particularly when we face tight deadlines.

Treks in-house design group produces everything from commemorative publications to banners to posters. The team uses Illustrator and Photoshop for graphics creation and then drops the saved images along with text into InDesign layouts. Because Trek often produces promotional material together with other sponsors, the ability to edit Illustrator files within InDesign is especially useful. Burke recalls a 24x36-inch four-color poster she created for the Gary FisherSaab mountain bike racing team that had logos from 20 co-sponsors running along the bottom of the layout. I could get those in Illustrator and paste them right into InDesign, Burke says. Theres no need to create EPS files in Illustrator. And if one of the sponsors says you cant show the logo in red, its PMS such and such, I can update it right in the InDesign document.
