New features and changes

Version 3.30 of the TerraSync software includes the following new features:
Support for Juno SB and SC handhelds. Enhanced support for adding image files as attributes to features. On Trimble handhelds with integrated cameras, TerraSync software version 3.30 includes a Camera button in the attribute entry form for Image file attributes. The Camera button launches the camera directly from within the TerraSync software and the resulting photo is automatically selected as the image to attach to the feature. On all devices, thumbnails of the selected image are now displayed in the attribute entry form when using an Image file attribute. Tap the thumbnail image to open and review the image. GPS information is added to the EXIF header when images are attached. When a jpg image file is attached to a feature, and there is a current GPS position, the EXIF header of the image file is populated with the following fields:
GPS Time and Date GPS Latitude, Longitude, Altitude, and Datum Feature name Labels 1 and 2 as defined in the Data Dictionary
If the GPS position for the feature is updated, the GPS information in the EXIF record is also updated, but the Original Time and Date the photo was taken is not changed unless the photo is also replaced.
Integration with CoPilot Live 7 Professional for Trimble TerraSync, and TomTom Navigator 6 turn-by-turn navigation software. When CoPilot Live 7 Professional for Trimble TerraSync, or TomTom Navigator 6 navigation software is installed on the device, and a navigation target is selected, the TerraSync software automatically switches to using the navigation software to navigate to the selected target, then switches back when you have arrived at the destination. Features or waypoints can be selected as the navigation target. If the turn-by-turn navigation software is not already running when the target is set in the TerraSync software, the TerraSync software will also launch the navigation software. A TerraSync tray icon has been added to the Windows Mobile Today screen to assist in switching between the TerraSync software and the CoPilot or TomTom navigation software if required.

Tip To make switching between applications even easier, use the Windows Mobile Buttons application to program the keypad buttons as shortcuts to each application.
Ability to change the order of raster images in Background Files form. The TerraSync software version 3.30 allows you to change the order that raster images are displayed in the Map screen so that images with smaller extents do not appear behind images with larger extents. The new Up and Down buttons change the order of raster images only. Images higher up in the list will appear in front of other images.
Context menus in Map screen. The TerraSync software version 3.30 allows you to tap and hold (or right click on a PC) a feature or waypoint in the Map screen and select common actions from a context menu.
For Point features the options are: Update, Delete, and Set Target. For Line features the options are: Update, Delete, and the Set Target options are Vertex, Start, Middle, and End. For Area features the options are: Update, Delete, and the Set Target options are Vertex, Start/End, and Centroid. For Waypoints the options are: Delete and Set Target.
When running the TerraSync software version 3.30 on a PC, doubleclicking a waypoint in the Map screen will set it as the navigation target.
Configurable Data Update screen. With version 3.30 of the TerraSync software you can configure which fields are displayed in the Data \ Update list to make it easier to find features of interest. In Data \ Update, select Options then View and check or clear items to display. Number, Name, Update, Filter, and Distance are displayed by default as per previous versions of the TerraSync software.
Displaying just the feature ID Number, and Labels 1 and 2, may help to quickly identify a particular feature if you know that it has a unique label.
Updated SatDGPS.ini file for recent OmniSTAR frequency changes. The SatDGPS.ini file (OmniSTAR satellite list) has been updated to include recent frequency changes in the U.S.A., Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.
Not Connected status for External real-time sources. When using an Internet connection for an External real-time source, and the connection to the Bluetooth-enabled phone or wireless LAN connection is not active, Not Connected now appears in the Status \ Realtime screens instead of Waiting. Not Connected will appear if you have manually disconnected from within the TerraSync software by pressing the Ext Source button in the Setup screen, or if you selected Manual as the Connection Control setting under Real-time Settings \ External Source Settings \ Connection Control.
To use the real-time connection, ensure that the Bluetooth or wireless LAN radio in the handheld is enabled and that the other device is on and ready to connect, then in the Setup screen, tap the Ext Source button.

Tip To automatically connect to the external source after creating the connection, select Auto as the Connection Control setting in TerraSync.
Support has been added for the 5800 Model 2 GPS receiver.
Version 3.30 of the TerraSync software includes changes to resolve the following known issues:
Incorrect Magnetic declination calculation. The TerraSync software version 3.30 uses the latest International Geomagnetic Reference Field Model, version 10 (1900-2010), with a date of 1 January 2009.
Inaccurate height displayed in the Skyplot and Navigation screens. The heights used for the Skyplot screen and for the Go Up/Go Down functionality on the Navigation screen are now based on the GPS height minus the antenna height (pole or handheld) offset value.
Trimble Survey receivers not initializing correctly and displaying Link down message. Improvements have been made in version 3.30 of the TerraSync software to the handling of RTCM and CMR/CMR+ corrections with Trimble R8, R8 Model II, and 5800 receivers to ensure that initialization occurs consistently.
Not able to output NMEA messages from Trimble Survey receivers The TerraSync software version 3.30 now correctly identifies the receiver ports on the Trimble R8, R8 Model II, and 5800 receivers, and allows NMEA output to be configured.
OmniSTAR position flags in SSF File were incorrect when using Omnistar XP or HP. The position flags were previously set as Real-time Code when using OmniSTAR HP and XP corrections. In the TerraSync software version 3.30 they are now set as "L1/L2 Real-time Carrier Float."
The Select Server window (NTRIP table) is hard to read on devices with VGA displays. The Select Server window now displays correctly with wider columns on devices with VGA (480 x 640 pixel) resolutions displays.
Some Shapefiles are not able to display as backgrounds files. Shapefiles that contain polygons that have no positions are now correctly handled and the file can be displayed as a background image in the TerraSync software version 3.30.
Software maintenance period
From March 2007, customers purchasing TerraSync Professional edition receive 12 months software maintenance. Customers purchasing TerraSync Standard edition receive 90 days software maintenance as standard, but can elect to purchase an extension to 12 months at the time of order placement. After order placement, customers purchasing TerraSync Standard edition cannot extend maintenance from 90 days to 12 months, but they can purchase separate 1- or 2year software maintenance agreements.

Known issues

This section provides information about known issues with the TerraSync software.

Installation

On some devices powered by the Windows Mobile operating system, the message Adding information for Remove Programs may remain on the screen for several minutes at the end of the installation process. While this message is displayed, do not cancel the installation or reset the device.
E-mail client on Microsoft Windows Vista
When installed on a computer running the Windows Vista operating system, the TerraSync software does not directly support the standard Windows e-mail client when using the Data Transfer utility. Trimble recommends that you install Microsoft Outlook 2003 or Microsoft Outlook 2007 as the e-mail client.
Suspending a Windows Mobile powered device
Before you suspend a Windows Mobile powered device running TerraSync software, you must:
close all data files disconnect from the GPS receiver
CAUTION Failure to close all data files or to disconnect from the GPS receiver may result in corrupted data.

Communications

The turn-by-turn software or the device locks up when exiting with the TerraSync software running. If you close CoPilot Live 7 or TomTom Navigator 6 when the TerraSync software is still running and connected to GPS, the TerraSync software, the turn-by-turn software, or the device may stop working correctly and will need to be soft reset. Before exiting the turn-by-turn software, first disconnect from the GPS receiver in the TerraSync software.
TomTom Navigator 6 turn-by-turn navigation software sometimes locks up when the legal notices screen appears during startup. When the TomTom Navigator 6 software is started from within the TerraSync software by selecting a navigation target, TomTom Navigator 6 sometimes locks up when the legal notices screen appears and the device needs to be soft reset. To prevent this issue from occurring, start TomTom Navigator 6 before starting the TerraSync software and selecting a navigation target.
Destination is not set in CoPilot Live 7 when no GPS positions are available. If you do not have a current GPS position when the navigation target is set in the TerraSync software, the TerraSync software will switch to the CoPilot Live 7 navigation software, but the target is not displayed. When GPS is reacquired, the target should display correctly in CoPilot Live 7.
If you are using a GPS Pathfinder ProXRT receiver with a cabled external real-time source such as a GeoBeacon receiver, and you change the realtime setting in the TerraSync software to Use Uncorrected GPS, the ProXRT receiver continues to use the real-time corrections to generate positions. To stop using corrections from a cabled external real-time source, in the TerraSync software select Use Uncorrected GPS, and then disconnect the cable from the ProXRT receiver.

You cannot use the TerraSync software to configure communication settings for an external data radio connected to a base receiver. You can only configure the receiver to use the same settings as the radio. To change the data radios communication settings, use the configuration software that is provided with the radio. If you change the NMEA or RTCM output baud rate while the TerraSync software is outputting NMEA messages to an external device, communication problems can occur. The COM port may become locked, or the external device may misinterpret the data sent. Before changing communication settings in the NMEA Output Settings form, or in the Base Station Setup wizard, disconnect any external devices that are using NMEA data from the TerraSync software. If you accidentally select an infrared port on the field computer for connection to a GPS receiver, the TerraSync software may stop responding. The TerraSync software does not filter NMEA positions by PDOP, or obey the Wait for Real-time setting when outputting NMEA positions. All positions generated by the receiver are output in the NMEA stream.

Data collection

Not all data can be postprocessed if more than one type of GPS receiver was used to collect the data. If you want to change the receiver you are using, close the current data file. After connecting the new receiver, start a new data file and continue collecting data.
Positions collected using a receiver without H-Star technology that have been corrected in real time using a VRS network may be less accurate after postprocessing using the Trimble GPS Analyst extension for ESRI ArcGIS Desktop software or the GPS Pathfinder Office software. This is because the Differential Correction wizard uses a single base station, which is usually farther from the rover than the VRS network. Data that has been corrected in real time using a VRS network may not require postprocessing. The AT command set is a standard language for communicating with modems. To establish a dial-up connection with a VRS network using some cellphones (such as some Nokia models), you may need to send AT commands from the field computer to put the cellphone into ISDN mode. The Windows Mobile operating system cannot send these commands. To configure the cellphone, connect it to a computer that is running a desktop Windows operating system. Some cellphones do not disconnect the dial-up connection to a server when the TerraSync software sends a disconnect command. To ensure that a dial-up connection is ended, disconnect from the server in the TerraSync software and then end the call on the cellphone as well.

Restoring fonts

After you perform a hard reset on a Windows Mobile powered device that has a RAM backup feature ( for example, a GeoExplorer series handheld), fonts that you have installed may not be available. To make the fonts available, perform a soft reset.

Survey receivers

The TerraSync software may be unable to connect to a survey receiver that is configured to less than 38400 baud. If you have problems connecting the TerraSync software to the receiver, use the GPS Configurator software to check that the baud rate of the receiver port is set to 38400. GPS Configurator software is supplied with the GPS receiver. The TerraSync software cannot turn off a survey receiver. To turn off the receiver, use the Power button p on the receiver. When using a GeoExplorer series handheld as an external GPS receiver, with a cabled connection from your field computer to the serial clip on the GeoExplorer series handheld, the only baud rate that is supported is 38400. To set this up correctly:
Use the GPS Connector software on the GeoExplorer series handheld to set the COM1 baud rate to 38400 (or TSIP High Speed on a GeoExplorer 2005 series handheld). Use the COM port configuration control on your field computer to set the baud rate on its COM port to 38400.

OmniSTAR expiry date

When connected to a GPS Pathfinder ProXRT receiver, the OmniSTAR service expiry date may not display correctly after updating a subscription. This may occur after renewing a subscription, or activating an additional subscription ( for example, enabling VBS on a receiver that already has an HP subscription). The correct expiry date should appear in TerraSync if you disconnect and reconnect to the receiver, or change the real-time settings in the TerraSync software to "Use Uncorrected GPS" and then reconfigure the receiver to use OmniSTAR corrections.

Technical assistance

If you have problems using the TerraSync software, the following documentation should be your first point of reference:
The TerraSync Software Getting Started Guide contains an overview of the software functionality and a tutorial on using the software. The TerraSync Software Quick Start Guide contains a double-sided card that provides the proficient GPS user with an accelerated overview of the main TerraSync screens. The TerraSync Software Help contains reference information about each screen in the software.
If you cannot find a solution in these documents or in the Help, try restarting the TerraSync software. Close any open data file and then tap in the upper right corner of the TerraSync window to exit the software. Then start the TerraSync software again and resume working. If you cannot restart the software, or restarting the software does not solve the problem, try resetting or restarting the field computer. For more information, refer to the field computers documentation. If you still cannot find a solution to the problem, contact your Trimble reseller. Alternatively, go to www.trimble.com/support.html to request technical support.
