Fact sheet on Steward Responsibilities
As a steward, you are responsible for visiting a property and reporting any changes back to the Nature Trust of New Brunswick. In other words, you are our on-site eyes and ears. Your work is very important because it helps us learn about the propertys wildlife, decide what kind of management the property needs and catch any problems or violations. Here is some more information about being a steward:
Responsibilities visit the property at least once per year and note any natural (e.g. from storms or floods) or manmade (e.g. from vandals) changes note whether the conservation restrictions noted in the Conservation Easement Agreement or Management Plan are being upheld notify the Trust if there are potential or actual problems or violations at the property complete a monitoring report for the property check the condition of structures or trails report sightings of unusual plants or animals make recommendations on the propertys management and use to the Trust staff do light maintenance and clean-up work as necessary (e.g. re-staking boundary markers that have fallen over, picking up items of trash or debris, etc.)
Time commitment at least one visit per year for a few hours during the day (on a weekend or weekday) stewards usually serve for a number of years, although the term is up to you
Skills required good physical health (must be able to walk the property, and possibly row or bike to it) some knowledge of local wildlife and the ability to read maps is useful, but not required (we can train you) carpentry or maintenance skills are an asset, but not required
Occasionally you may be approached for help with gathering data, making repairs to structures or signs, or conducting large clean-ups. These activities are not part of your responsibilities, but if you have special skills in these areas (e.g. wildlife identification, carpentry) or would just like to help out, please let us know!
