HOW to SET UP NFS on QNAP PRO SERIES NAS WITH TVIX HD-VIDEO PLAYER

Preface

High-definition (HD) has become a trend in TV, video, and film production. More and more consumers are moving to HD plasma and LCD TV. HD media player is also a must-have appliance for modern home. Now, you can use QNAP NAS to save all these HD video sources and set up a digital home multimedia center with digital media adaptor (DMA). QNAP Turbo NAS series adopts energy-saving and is designed to work like an electric home appliance. It is an all-in-one multimedia sharing centre which supports varied multimedia sharing, e.g. DLNA, NFS, and SMB (My Network Places) file sharing, and secure data protection by RAID. With QNAP NAS, you can start to enjoy the multimedia data sharing at home in a more convenient way. You can set up your multimedia sharing system by the following hottest QNAP NAS applications: (1) NFS: Connect Dvico TViX series and Pixel Magic by NFS (NAS Pro series supports NFS). (2) DLNA (built-in TwonkyMedia DLNA): Connect to PS3, Xbox360 or other DLNA compliant media players by UPnP. (3) My Network Places: You can connect the XBMC (formerly named XBox Media Center) media player by SMB connection. QNAP TS-409 Pro, TS-209 Pro, and TS-109 Pro support NFS file sharing. You can finish the folders sharing of the NAS in a few simple steps. No complicated commands are required. NFS is a protocol for efficient data access on Linux or UNIX. You can use connect to other Linux-based HD media players via NFS for efficient HD video streaming and playing.

Step by Step Instruction

This article introduces how to use the NFS function of QNAP NAS with network media player to set up a digital home centre. Demo NAS: QNAP TS-409 Pro Turbo NAS (with firmware v 2.0.0 build 0214 or above) Demo HD-Video player: DVICO TVIX M-5100SH (with firmware v 1.2.23 F) PIXEL MAGIC HD Mediabox (with firmware v 1.4.3)
NAS Configuration (QNAP TS-409 Pro) Step 1
Connect your TS-409 Pro to your home network. By default, the unit should obtain an IP address automatically. Start QNAP Finder to detect and locate your NAS, simply double-click it to bring up the administration web page. Now, log in to the NAS with your admin username and password. (Default: admin, admin)

Step 2

Go to Network Settings > NFS Service. Check the box Enable NFS Service and click Apply to confirm. Next follow the link says Click here to set the NFS access right of the network share to proceed.

Step 3

Select the network share you wish to configure the NFS access rights (Qmultimedia for this example) then click NFS Access Control.
Choose Read only for the Access right and simply leave the Allowed IP address or domain name with the * (wildcard) as it is. However, please read the notes underneath it for further information if you intend to put restriction on the NFS shares to only allow access from those with either IP address or domain names listed in here. Otherwise click OK and your done. Repeat Step 3 to configure more shares if required.
High Definition Video Player Configuration (TViX HD M-5100SH) Step 1
Connect the TViX player to the same network router and in this tutorial we use HDMI as the video output so connect your HDMI cable as seen in the picture. Now power on your TV, the TViX HD player and you should see the screen as below. Use the remote to go to the SETUP page.
From the NETWORK tab on the SETUP page we will first make sure that the unit has got assigned an IP address by navigating to TViX Network Info then based on your connection method choose Wired Info or Wi-Fi Info and whether you use static IP assignment or dynamic DHCP IP assignment.
If the Network Info looks fine to you, next we will setup the Network Disk using NFS. Navigate to Network Disk 1 and press OK on the remote then choose Normal (NFS) option to bring up the pop-up where we can enter the NFS share information.
Now use the remote control key pad to enter the Server Name as Qmultimedia which we have enabled the NFS service on in step 3. Enter the IP address of the NAS which is 10.8.12.15 in our case for the Server IP field. If you ever happen to want to use your own share on the NAS repeat step 3 and make sure you have configured the NFS Access Control as Read only then after that simply type in the share name as the Server Name here. Please note that even though our example IP is 10.8.12.15, you will have to add the leading 0 as seen above. Once youve done this press OK on the remote and go to EXIT to save the configurations you made.

Step 4

Go to Video page and go to Network Disk 1 as shown below and you should see the contents in the Qmultimedia folder on the NAS.
Now you can start browsing all the high definition contents stored on QNAP TS-409-Pro NAS using the fast and the best method to establish the link in between.
High Definition Video Player Configuration (PIXEL MAGIC HD Mediabox) Step 1
Connect the Pixel Magic HD Mediabox to the same network router. In this tutorial we use HDMI as the video output, so connect your HDMI cable. Now power on your TV, the HD Mediabox player and you should see the screen as below. Use the remote to go to the SETUP page.
From the System tab on the SETUP page we will again first make sure that the unit has got assigned an IP address by navigating to IP Settings then based on your IP address assignment method choose DHCP or Static. In this tutorial we use DHCP and so we can see that we have successfully obtained an IP address as shown in the red rectangle below which is 10.8.12.31.
Next we will setup the NFS share mapping function. From the same page navigate to IP Settings then NFS and press OK on the remote then it should bring up the NFS Settings popup as shown below where you can enter the NFS share information.
Now use the remote control key pad to enter /Qmultimedia in the field Folder (note to add the slash /). Next, enter the IP address of the NAS which is 10.8.12.15 in our case for the field IP. If you ever happen to want to use your own share created on the NAS repeat step 3 in Configuration of NAS and make sure you have configured the NFS Access Control as Read only then after that simply type in the share name for the Folder field here. Please note that even though our example IP is 10.8.12.15 however you will have to add the leading 0 as seen above. Once youve done this press Add on the remote then press SETUP key again to save the configurations you made.
Go to File browser page and go to Network (NFS) as shown below and make sure that the Display type is either set to All or Video just to make sure we can see all the videos on the NAS in this tutorial.
Press the OK button on remote to select the NFS share that you have just added.
