MPC Reviews

MPC Reviews are a great neutral source for any user or company, offering an in depth opinion on any product from a consumer angle. Introduction

Over the last few years only one brand from overseas has been able to leave a great impression on me concerning FW updates. DViCo! Today, DViCo makes another full review at MPC about its latest device, the M-5100SH which incorporates more memory to support the additional H.264 format and can optionally be fitted with a DVB-T HD Tuner that turns the M-5100SH into a recorder as well, beside the Multimedia Jukebox capabilities. To start, the price is not easy to swallow. Around 450 Euro without internal hard drive and without the tuner, we should consider the player is the same as the previous models, with some additional memory and H.264 support. That difference is quite expensive leaving a difference of 150. As far as the tuner is concerned, all development and recording features should be in that price and not the basic model. This makes the TViX only accessible for people willing to spend about 800 for the Box, the Tuner and a decent Hard Drive inside. Only worth it if you have the intention using the box to its full potential and if it will do all it should quite well. Even for DViCo with a long history of updates and good support, it will be very hard leaving a decent price balance impression in the end considering the price to pay for the unit and its options. For some countries, where DVB-T is hardly available and where people not yet use H.264, the older models might be a better and more cost effective choice. The new models however, M-4100SH and this M5100SH, will certainly fit better for those actually using a lot of H.264 in combination with local availability of a lot of DVB-T channels to justify the price. Enough on the price subject now as Im anxious to get started, ready let DViCo take me through the journey of the new place called M-5100SH, ready to find out if the price is justified or not.

The TViX costs around 450 without the optional tuner and hard drive. Even though it can be used without hard drive, most will use one anyway though we saw many people skipping on inserting one considering the TViX players have pretty good networking abilities. The unit is cool in design. The front only incorporates the VFD on the upper side. The top is where you can find the operational buttons including the Power on, pause/play, OK, directional buttons and the Setup button. The total black design is handsome and hardly anyone unfamiliar with the TViX products will see a full grown media Player in it. The rear is nicely designed. Many will be happy to finally have a HDD player incorporating HDMI even though it does not offer any benefits over DVI, both being digital connections. It however avoids picture shifting as seen on many players connected over DVI to a TV that only have a HDMI connection. Considering no DVD player inside the unit, HDCP is not a requirement. What we get is thus the HDMI connection, a USB socket to connect the player over USB with the PC, optical input for sound, S-Video and Composite, Component (YPbPr) an coaxial sound input. Further we find 2 USB host connections are available and the Network RJ45 connector. Just below is the power connector and at the left the Multi IO connector that can be used to connect the T-530 tuner or an optional break out box which offers some additional connections. (Notice that for the M-4100 the Tuner model is T-430 and NOT T-530, even though both are the same tuner in a different design matching the player) In the box we found 2 Power Cables and considered it must have been a mistake or, would it be possible that the tuner should have its own power cord attached. Oh No We checked immediately and found it is not necessary. The two power cables are also not a mistake as the box states 2 Power Cables along with the Remote Control, 2 batteries, 1 USB cable, a Composite cable (RCA), a CD-Rom and a small

manual for the Tuner. (Comes with the Tuner which optional!) So beside a missing option to connect the DViCo TViX M-5100 out of the box using High Definition, everything is available. The few extra dollars for having added a HDMI cable or Component would not have been such a problem to fit in with the price tag. The unit shipped to me came in the M-5000A box so it scared the hell out of me seeing the picture with DVI connection on the box, thinking a mistake had been made. It could turn into my advantage though as I never send things back. It would mean I got an M-5000A and they had to send me another M-5100SH but the box contents where correct. That solved, the design of the model remains practically the same as the previous models. Even though we have always liked it, I wondered if ever DViCo will release a normal looking player for the living room which would be nice. Surely the use of the same design reduces the production price and development / design costs which in this case not really reflects the end user price. It would have been great ending up closer to the same range of pricing with the other models and the extra juice would only be needed for the optional tuner and not the model itself as basically it is the same based on a newer chip and some additional memory. That way, the possible amount of buyers would also increase and the TViX would be in a better position to compete with the other H.264 capable players to which the difference now also is 150! Am I bitching about the price again? I guess so, but only it is something to think about. We are very strict in measuring price balance / features with each other. I promise, you wont hear anything about prices anymore until the conclusion. Deal?

The Remote

DviCo again bundled the TViX M-5100SH with the usual remote we have seen before. Why would it need changing anyway as it is a darn good one. All the lighter colored buttons are fluorescent, lighting up the dark for easier navigation and even though it is not nearly as good as a backlit remote, it is much better then one not having it. The midway solution thus. Buttons are well arranged and the remote is decent to operate the player with who accepts the commands easily and fast. The range of the remote is equally good. One thing we missed before and miss again now, is a more clear Audio button for changing Audio on DVD playback. I forgot which key it was before and have to find it again. The top of the remote incorporates direct jump buttons to Video, Photo and Music. Also a dedicated buttons for DTV is available. At the bottom, you find the options integrated to record TV, a Guide button (assumedly EPG) and a Capture button. This will probably serve as a snapshot maker from watching TV. The remote for sure is already not a deal breaker. Its a fine sample, better then average.

Notice differences from here on! Considering we are reviewing the TViX including the tuner, parts of the next section will include Tuner Setup and Player Setup. Depending on what you buy, some options might not be available for you specifically.

The TViX Setup

People that have owned a TViX before will find the Interface very familiar. Nothing much has changed beside the added options for the tuner. The Setup is divided into 4 sections being AV Setup for Audio and Video, Miscellaneous for all kinds of things, Networking and HDTV.

Building the unit

If we can even talk about building the unit as its so easy that building is hardly the proper word. The Tuner is just a little dish on which the TViX unit itself fits perfectly. The dish has some weight added for stability in case you move the unit.

AV Settings

The AV settings include selection of Audio and Video input. For Audio, I can select Analogue or Digital output. Choosing Digital enables DTS Audio (Analogue or Digital selection) and WMA Audio (Analogue or Digital selection). A third option, AAC Audio is not activated regardless of the choices made so possibly it is mend to be added later.
TV Standard can be set to both PAL or NTSC can be set to the usual and the option exists to enable auto switching between both. Awesome! TV Type can be either 4.3 letterboxed or 16:9. The option for Pan & Scan is disabled. Video output can be S-Video / Composite, Component and HDMI. Output selections for Component and HDMI both include Auto HDMI (disabled on Composite, S-Video and Component and active when using HDMI), 480i/576i, 480p/576p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p. The fact that 480i is supported is great as it enables people with an expensive scaler built-in to their TVs use that one instead of the abilities of the TViX player. The TviX pretty much features all possibilities youd want. Maybe some will be
The connection is simple as well, as you connect the tuner with the Multi I/O connection in the back. Add to that that you simply insert the

Antenna Cable youre done.
Thats all concerning the tuner connection. Additionally you can insert a hard drive in the unit using the provided slider in the box. Connection for hard drive is SATA which is nowadays better than IDE.
longing for SCART, than just use a SCART plug with Composite or S-Video connected to it. Just a little tip.

Miscellaneous Settings

Miscellaneous settings is where you set options as the slideshow timer, Set the date and time (yes the TViX does display the time in the front display), fan speed (Slow 1/2, Normal, Fast 1/2), Languages of the System (Available are English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Spanish (MIX) and Swedish). More options can be set for Auto Run (On/Off/Random, Repeat and Random/repeat), OSD Display (Off, Normal, Detail), Safety Lock (Enable / Disable), selection of subtitle color combinations, a Screen Saver (Enable / Disable but no setting for time) and selection of the remote control type considering different remotes have been available. At the top of the Miscellaneous settings you can find an option for setting slideshow effects but it is disabled.
Then, last and most important would be the ability to change font size into Normal or Big. As we know, with high resolutions, text can become rather small and not everyone has such great eyes as me. Sometimes we need to think big, sometimes we need to read big too. Im not being too hard am I? Just matching the player up to the perfect conditions we have been able to built up over the years, thinking big.

Network Setup

Network Setup can either be Wired or Wireless, providing you purchase a Wireless USB stick thingy to connect to the unit. For Wired/Wlan you can either use DHCP or enter IP settings manually. Using wireless will both offer WEP and WPA security probably but we could not verify this as we dont have a USB Wireless Adapter. Notice also that only few brands are supported so check before you buy is a golden rule. As always, a good resource it the MPC forums. From the Network Setup, you can review your current IP settings using the Info option. Further can I enable network shares using SMB or Net Share NFS. This is a part I like very much about TViX but also hate at the same time. Talking about conflicting statement, but I will explain. To me, SMB is a crucial part on any Network Player but it can be implemented in multiple ways. It can detect any and all shares and devices automatically on your network through broadcasting detection, or it can force one to use certain folders and certain usernames to find the folders to share. The TViX uses the second options which not only limits you to 4 shares. Even though the username is better for security instead of using the Windows Guest account, the SMB would benefit from being general and adding the ability to define a user and password to be used for the connections. This way, one is limited to 4 folders and 4 devices in the best scenario.

Three minor things I would like to say here and one bigger remark. Selection of the slideshow timer should be available to enter in seconds by the customer ranging from seconds instead of selecting it from predefined amounts in seconds. Its a very small remark but it would be better.
So far we have seen multiple items disabled which means that DViCo is working on them. Never the less they make you eager having them available right now, especially transition effects for the images. Third and last minor remark would be the ability to disable the fan completely if we ware to decide not using a hard drive at all. For languages, considering Sweden is supported, I would like to see Danish and Norway to be added to cover the complete Scandinavian part of Europe.
Beside the SMB and Net Share setup, you can also enable / disable the FTP server which facilitates adding content to the hard drive without removing the unit from the TV. A FTP password is assigned from factory and it does not seem to be possible changing it to a custom password.

Player Interface

DViCo continues to build on its previous interface, also for the TViX M-5100SH where from the main page the options for Video, Pictures, Music, HDTV and Setup are available.

HDTV Settings

Only if you actually have the Tuner connected the HDTV Setup options become available. Here are the settings for booting the TViX in TV Mode (with the tuner) or in File Mode so that you actually can start playing files right away instead of watching TV or vice versa.
After selecting the option you want you are taken to a different interface that shows the list of files while at the top of the interface are 4 main selection buttons for sources. These include Internal hard drive, network resources or USB1 and USB2 providing you attached a USB hard drive to the unit.
Further options available is using Free to Air or Cable as source for channels. There is a DTV Time Adjust Sync and the player can be set to a location like France, UK. From this setting the TViX will derive PAL or NTSC operational mode. A default language can be set to for Audio and you can start the channel scan from here which in the current FW is not yet active as far as we can see. The Tuner and recording options are by the way being reviewed separate from this review as it purposes multiple players in the TViX range.

The network Icon is a little weird to get used to but it is well done to facilitate everything to be available directly from the main interface. For each network connection you enable in the Setup another little block will be shown beside the icon. The more you connect, the more blocks will be shown (up to 4 maximum). The fact the resources are available or not can only be seen for the icons and not for network resources which is kind of sad. Also selecting of the resources does not show any names of the shares which would be beneficial for the general user convenience.
Unavailable USB but all 4 network icons are available but you dont get any confirmation or names!
When a USB hard drive or another device is attached, the icons for USB will become available. For selecting network resources, you select the Network icon and use up and down arrows to select any of the maximum 4 network resource.

H.264 playback

The unit clearly performs above average where recorded AVCHD files had no issues playing with bitrates up to 24000. Amazing considering this is quite some heavy processing for the sigma chip. Also TP and TS files tested ran smoothly. The player support a wide range of H.264 files including TP, TS, AVCHD (m2ts) and QuickTime (mov). First we checked AVCHD considering I have a Sony HDRSR1 HD camera and we made a movie that played flawless on the unit in the highest quality possible. Options as FF/RW, Play, Pause are available and also ZOOM. Under
Available USB1 after attaching a hard drive! The icons can be selected by pressing left on the arrow buttons to change focus from the list of files to the main icons. Pressing the right arrow button will change the sort order of your file list. Available selections are sorting by time, size and name.
Even though the SMB implementation and NFS is very well done, we would have preferred unlimited lists of SMB shares on our PC and NAS storage. It is still somewhat easier then doing it in the way of the TViX although you wont hear me complain too much. Its available and 4 shares is sufficient for most consumers but some sort of visual reference for instantly seeing if a resource is available or not would be nice. The remote allows changing between different selections without going back to the main menu which is nice. In addition to select the option to start in file mode or TV mode, it pretty much cant become more convenient. At the time of review, these selections did not function to filter content from lists but it did function on the main menu. If these buttons will be activated later on, it would be nice to leave an option to select seeing all file types too.

ZOOM you have availability

Media Playback

The TViX is based on the EM8623 chip from Sigma that enables H.264 playback. We have to consider however it will not be able to play any and all of these formats of which mkv probably will be the one we miss most. People that actually own a Sony or Panasonic recorder that records in AVCHD format will probably be ravished to hear the files can be played raw on the unit without the need of making modifications. and down.
of progressive ZOOM and the usual Full Screen, PAN and Scan. A welcome addition to both is the default zoom option which restores to the original size. One can even scroll left, right, up
I was kind of surprised seeing also the Time Search functions working fine on the AVCHD files. Rewind is disabled. Further we found STEP enabled which allows you to slow down playback from to 1/8 by pressing the down arrow in Pause mode and while not in Pause mode, the up and down arrows functions as skip 15 seconds ahead or back. This machine offers more on H.264 than most players on normal DiVX and DVD and what if some functions dont
work 100% or are not available for all file extensions, this little box does it a lot of them just about right. Additionally, pressing info offered some info on the movie too, so it seems with H.264 DViCo has been working on supporting operations as well. Well done, even though some info, as resolution was not shown.
Select subtitles after playback can be started using the Title key. It will offer the full directory of available subtitles including the ones in subfolders!! Amazing what kind of little gadget features are available that turn out to be very helpful. On Music playback, options as FF/RW are available by skipping 15 seconds back and forth. The subtitles can be moved left/right, up or down within limits by pressing the subtitle button but there seems no ability to change its size which is the only option we miss, or maybe a second one could be the ability to sync subtitles by offering the ability to move up or down from -6 to + 6 seconds. This sure makes you wonder if also music is played in shuffle mode using all subdirectories. Let me help you out of the misery and lets find out.
We tested multiple file types including mov, avchd (m2ts), tp and ts, and I mean really serious files and we had no issues playing them. We can thus conclude that the TViX M5100SH is truly capable of satisfying people in need of H.264, even without mkv so far.

Other Media Files

As far as DivX, Music and Pictures are concerned, the TViX is a great performer but offers only 1 format of pictures supported, JPEG. This is limited but considering you will soon get transition effects added to the player, it will make up for some of its limitations.

Music and Video MiX

Music and Video performance is slightly faster then on the previous models, most likely having something to do with double the memory inside the unit (128mb) and also the flash (16mb) offers more abilities for DViCo to implement. One of the things I would like to mention is the ability to choose custom subtitles from the hard drive or network resource you are currently playing from.
We prepared a drive with only 1 song and 1 subfolder holding another 10 or so songs. We will start playback from the single file and see if it shuffles through the subdirectories. Playing shows another interfaced with info on the song using tag information but as you can see there is a problem with the timings of the song. This song is not 596583 minutes long. The time goes on correctly but no, subdirectories are not loaded so you are still limited of playing the files from the same folder unless you start creating playlists which are supported.
Repeat is available but shuffle seemed not to function during playback. You can use Shuffle however when no file is playing to start a directory of music to play in shuffle mode. We also found it weird, when starting a audio file or used shuffle the unit would report Subtitles: None so we assume work is in progress. (The review is not based on the final FW but on a beta close to final release. This is probably due to the selections of Audio, Movies and Pictures not yet working to filter proper content and make the unit load only parts that are needed for the selection.)
Not a big deal, but I thought Id mention it anyway. You never know where one might get stuck thinking its a bug. Reading the reviews of MPC clear up quite some things that might confuse people.

Video DivX, XViD, BViX

I dont even want to talk about the video section as we already know it is superior. There is no real match against the performance or ability of the TViX in the range of HDD players out there. These are and will remain for quite some time the best of them all. In fact, I can imagine the only reason that could cause you not to choose this player would be its price with a difference of 150. (There, I did it again! Talking about the price) Features and options are great as already discussed in the H.264 section. The options are pretty much the same for normal files. No issues playing files with subtitles (SRT/SUB tested), no issues with Bivx or other files in our tests. Its the same results as the other models with some added value in options and speed. Hearing me say its the best concerning supported files and options, should do the trick of realizing this is a monster for Media files. It eats just about anything! At Slow speed, you cant hear it when even close to the unit. Important, and we took special care, the noise caused by the cooler is very acceptable. No ball bearing noise or high pitch sound as if a tornado is going round. During video playback, the SETUP button is used for changing Brightness/Contrast/Hue and Saturation controls so you can set the TViX to whatever works fine with your current settings of existing hardware.

Further, from the interface, it would be nice knowing how many files will players and how far we are progressed like file 16 playing of 36 or 16/36 etc What is funny here, is using the info button which instead of offering additional info, brings me back to the main menu while the file continuous to play. The info buttons is thus the button to use for having the ability to browse your lists during playback. Considering the many options on the unit, some are stored under weird buttons on the remote and this is one of them. It also makes it hard to recollect where options are stored when you need them eventually. The player will stay in the list of files even if you select new songs to play and will only return to the info pane if you press the info button again. Ring any bell what is happening yet? Apparently when starting music, DViCo decided to load the INFO panel by default to show info about the file, duration and elapsed time, this explains the need to press the INFO button to return to the list. (smart people at MPC) One more issue I found, when being in browse mode after you started music and used the info key to see the list of files, you cant change sources. For instance, if playing music from the internal HDD and you are playing music from there and return to browse other folders for music, you cant jump to network resources. You will first have to stop playback.
Also info is available on about all files played revealing most crucial things you need to know about the movie playing. In addition, as stated, you have several more options just like in the H.264 part of the review like ZOOM, Time-Search, FF/RW, Step etc and more, bookmarks!

Pictures

DviCo is a good listener to its consumers and very hard worker concerning fw updates but one very important thing they have ignored so far. The range of supported picture files and if I would live ion Korea I would be there right now asking why? JPEG alone is not sufficient, regardless of the features of having slide effects, zoom, rotation and whatever else. People need at least 4 extensions supported including JPEG, GIF, BMP and PNG. Combine that with a list of features and you probably make me happy. Now, as things are with current FW at the time of our review, we only have JPEG, progressive zoom (yammy), scroll ability going up, down, left and right but no rotations. (The angle button seems to function as rotation but it doesnt work, neither do the arrow buttons). Zoom levels are about the same as for video from very tiny to reasonably big. In combination with scroll, you can zoom in on an object not at the center. Add rotation and more formats + enable the slideshow effects, and we are talking about the first media player we consider an adult in slideshows!

We havent mentioned it before, but theres also a Volume control on the remote for setting the level on the TViX unit. With DVD file playback and previously tested DiVX and H.264 files, a bookmark is saved when halting the movie. Pressing the bookmark function on the remote will offer a list of files to recover viewing from are available.
As you see, we have an AVI file in the list, a VOB file, and a.tp file of The Matrix we tested. We did not find the DVD bookmark even though, if we start the same ISO file, it will recover from bookmark. Probably something which is in progress. It works, we dont care that much how as long as its available. ZOOM is again progressive, STEP is available under Paused Mode again ranging from half speed up to 1/8, FF/RW works fluent and fine (also on DiVX FF/RW is smooth) and so on The features are impressive but sometimes very unclear. For instance we can change subtitles with the subtitle button, but how do we change Audio if there isnt no Audio Button? In fact there is, but all the way at the top and is actually reserved for heading to the Audio section but during DVD play and BivX, it serves to change Audio. We not go in very deep, the support is marvelous, the functions are there somewhere but requires you to keep the manual close in order to find them as there is a little confusion in the implementation in the way DViCo has handled things. Its the price of adding features I guess. A tip from us would be changing remote in the future to better purpose the layout and ability to assign enough buttons for all the features that are most used or even create an OSD submenu with the more fancy functions and features in addition to the remote

DVD ISO and VIDEO_TS

Some brands underestimate the importance of supporting digital DVD titles, practically just backups of your original DVDs on a hard drive making them easily available for the kids or yourself at all times. DViCo is one of the players that have great support for it but consider that many tools exist to create ISO and backups and many different protections are used these days to prevent you from making such files or errors cause them not to play correctly. (MPC recommends Slysoft AnyDVD for preventing protections to mess up your freedom). We will add some more option that you have during DVD playback which might be available in other sections too (we just found out about them when arriving to this section and there are too many to test in all possible sections). Pressing the Info button multiple times changes the info displayed. First time you get full info on the Movie. Second time you get elapsed time, third time remaining time and 4th time, the osd disappears. Somehow it offers much info, on the other hand if you only interested in movie info, you have to press 3 times before the OSD is gone.

FTP Power!

Another good things about the TViX is the built in FTP server. This enables you to administer the contents of the drive remotely without connecting the device to your PC. This is however in a limited way and measured to purpose adding and removing files only and not necessarily sharing them with the world. First time I connected, we got a long list of folders while we only have 1 disk (disk1 thus) and nothing else. We assume (again assumptions) that the TViX can handle 4 partition on the internal hard drive and folders for this on FTP have been reassigned and maybe supports up to 8 devices connected to the USB ports It should be a little better than this however but without being a problem.

Hi-Jacks Opinion

Lets kill one dream. Is it perfect? No. We found few shortcomings and once in a while the unit blocks but this is something you cant avoid with stashing so much inside a little cube. In fact, its marvelous how stable it is against what the player can do. The whole TViX experience is a treat. No other player comes even close to the capabilities of the TViX M-5100SH (or cheaper alternative M-4100SH which has exactly the same capabilities) or its features and operations in the range of HDD Media Adapters so TViX remains king of the world and might mean the end of the EM8620 range of players for many brands except those actually providing a full functioning package. However I see clearly that DViCo is pleasing its consumers with many updates and stashing as many features as possible inside their products that cause things to become unclear and to me starts backfiring as it turns the units into harder to use devices, costing points in convenience and ease of use in the end because of not keeping a clear structure in the newly added features and functions. The general performance and quality is superb including the H.264 capabilities although mkv is a format many will miss and seem hard to implement on the core EM8622 chip. That and the poor picture formats supported and no rotation are the biggest and only remarks. The FW is still in progress as we found some features disabled along the way but nothing we consider a problem. The FTP is fast and easy and very helpful to administer the TViX remotely even though we would prefer custom user and password. Same comments can be made for SMB, instead of assigning folders it should detect the available folders and list them. We found however all things we expected and more in good working condition and therefore these is only one conclusion to make. The DViCo TViX M-5100SH is absolutely the best device ever made from operational point of view. Design is nice although some would like a normal player design, classic. Then finally the price. The unit can be compared to the M5000 units with added support for H.264 and added memory and more flash. This does not justify the difference in price completely, even though the player can master an enormous amount of functions and DViCos support is constant (this is included in the basic price in general). We

The user is fixed and pre-assigned again (TvixFTP) and so is the password you can find in the Setup Menus under Networking. Download speed is about 3.5 megabyte a second and upload is slightly faster, close to 4 megabyte a second. Very fast speeds for working on a sigma chip and the best seen so far, except for NDAS which is still faster. Excellent implementation but we would like to user the ability for custom usernames and password and the default folders to disappear.

Recording TV

Reviewed separately later on!
must admit though, if compared against the products of many competitors who charge 300 and more, we feel much better about the price of the TviX then some other products. The added price should however have been mainly in the additional tuner. In its current state, at a cost of around 450 in general EU and about 500 in the UK, we consider the price slightly too high, about 100. With a tuner and Hard Drive of 750GB the total solution would cost around 700 which is quite an investment, even for a DViCo player and could limit the success eventually of the player as it has a tremendously favorable feature set. In the end, what I want to say, it should be cheaper for people intending the M-5100SH or M-4100SH to be used without tuner or HDD. Closer to the range of the other players as the gap is too big. As they say in the UK when riding the Underground, Mind the Gap, Mind the Gap.

MPC X-Factor

It is with pleasure we reviewed another DViCo TViX product. Where it has a history of amazing me about the abilities, the new players amaze me even more. I had not expected this player to perform so well.

X-Factor: 9.3

The TViX has an X-Factor of 9.3 / 10 in the range of EM8622 players. No way anyone is going to beat that anytime soon. Sure, there are some things that could be better, more organized actually but it does so much good we should not fall over it. Absolutely recommended! Looking for a H.264 player today, you get it with the TviX M-5100Sh and additionally get a whole lot more.
