So far, over-the-top is overdone
WASHINGTON I still love you; I just want to marry other platforms. During his keynote address at The Cable Show Thursday, Disney President Bob Iger sounded more like Bill Henrickson, the bigamist in HBOs Big Love, than any character found on Igers own network as he explained that programmers like Disney want to explore their opportunities, including over-thetop delivery. Iger asserted plainly, though, that Disney remains bullish on cable as a platform and as a business, and that giving away content is not a viable business model. What happens if content providers make more and more content available for free via the Internet, and subscribers start canceling their video subscriptions in favor of getting their favorite shows via the Web? Thats the question of the day, but according to the panelists at the Thursday keynote session, its a problem of tomorrow. The executives from MSOs on the panel Michael Willner of Insight, Glenn Britt of Time Warner Cable, Tom Rutledge of Cablevision and Amy Tykeson of BendBroadband said they havent seen much in the way of subscribers dropping their video services in favor of getting their content through their broadband connections. The panelists still expect the opposite to be the case. Willner said video is still the last service people drop

Vendors get scoop from cable op panel
WASHINGTON Five vendors were able to generate feedback on their companies technologies from a panel of cable operator experts during a session Thursday at The Cable Show. Moderator Louis Toth, managing director for Comcast Interactive Capital, said instead of just focusing on one theme for the session like was done in past editions, the vendors discussed a range of technologies. During the session Inventing Tomorrow: Innovations for a New Marketplace, iCueTV CTO and founder Michael Huegel talked about his companys enhanced TV services platform, which is designed to enable t-commerce for apps and services such as polling, voting, customer requests for more information and extended Web services. Panelist Dallas Clement, senior vice president of strategy and development for Cox, asked Huegel why t-commerce is ready for takeoff now after previous
Midcontinent preps for HD VOD with SeaChange
Midcontinent Communications is working with SeaChange International on aggressively upgrading its HD VOD library. Midcontinents goal is to dramatically increase the amount of HD VOD content available to its viewers from its centralized VOD operations using software and systems from SeaChange. The project is adding nearly 9,000 hours of capacity to each of Midcontinents ve video server systems, which are managed by a single SeaChange software platform. We recognized that adding HD content in general, and particularly HD VOD, could not only help differentiate us from competitive satellite operators, but also generate additional revenues, said Tom Heier, corporate engineering manager for Midcontinent. Midcontinents longstanding relationship with SeaChange, which dates back to our rst analog ad-insertion systems and our later launch of VOD, made for a natural decision to continue to expand upon the foundation that we have built together. Laying the groundwork to add more HD VOD titles, Midcontinent increased the capacity of its ve SeaChange server systems from 2,500 to 11,000 hours each.

According to the company, the new technology improves performance and scale and can lower TCO through simplied network design and operations. StreamScope eRM also eliminates the need for video monitoring-specic appliances. Because StreamScope eRMs can be integrated into existing Juniper routers, customers will be able to use deployed M and MX series platforms to deliver integrated video monitoring and analysis capabilities. And the offering builds on the technology of Triveni Digital. Video monitoring is an increasingly critical capability for cable operators and IPTV and wireless providers, as customer expectations for high-quality video entertainment continue to grow, said Manoj Leelanivas, SVP and GM of the Edge Aggregation Business Unit at Juniper. By increasing the scalability, performance and efciency of video monitoring and driving down TCO, StreamScope eRM raises the bar for video assurance solutions and is a powerful testament to the open innovation fostered by our Partner Solution Development Platform.

aborted attempts. Huegel said the infrastructure is in place for t-commerce, the technologies are in place and its something that consumers want now. SiBeam President and CEO John LeMoncheck spoke about his companys wireless technology that operates in the 60 GHz range, which is an unlicensed spectrum throughout the world. Customers who are buying thin-panel HDTVs are creating a market for wireless companies to send signals to those TVs without cables. LeMoncheck said that while his company can provide its technology via dongles and upgrades, the main focus is to be integrated into new set-top boxes and TVs.

free content out there, Britt noted, and, as he has pointed out in the past and repeated on the panel, free wins.
Nonetheless, the free stuff is mostly from the traditional networks that get most of their revenue from advertising, and whove been providing content over the air for free, anyway. And, yes, there are new sources of free content such as YouTube. Tykeson said the appointment-viewing model we grew up with is maturing and declining, and the on-demand model is appealing for the younger generation. How can we sustain terric entertainment if its free? she asked. There has to be some coming-around-the-bend to assure viable business models. The industry has to gure out a way to make sure people are willing to continue to pay for content. And it has to be a way that allows the industry to make a living out of it, Willner pointed out. If we cant, he said, its going to shut down one of this countrys biggest exports entertainment. Asked about consumption-based pricing, the panelists were in accord that subscribers should pay for what they use. Britt veried reports earlier this week that Time Warner Cable will be rolling out consumption caps in all of its markets.

Macrovision launches tru2way IPG
WASHINGTON Macrovision has launched its Passport tru2way solution and has added multi-room DVR capabilities to its Passport Echo 3.5 and i-Guide A28 IPGs. Macrovision has also launched its Connected Platform solution with tru2way support to make it easier for CEMs to deploy DLNA-, UPnP-, DTCP-IP- and tru2waycompliant networked set-tops and TVs for whole home access to recorded digital media. The companys Passport tru2way solution is a fully integrated IPG for tru2way-enabled devices. Meanwhile, with planned availability on Motorolas standardized MoCA-enabled STBs, Macrovisions multi-room DVR solutions will allow DVR-recorded content to be watched throughout the home network. DVRs have continued to gain traction in U.S. households, topping 31 million at the end of 2008, said Ian Olgeirson, senior analyst with SNL Kagan. Cable operators face an increasingly competitive environment and need to add multi-room DVRs in order to more economically satisfy demand for the time-shifting technology on additional screens in the household.
Harmonic debuts new encoder
SUNNYVALE, Calif. Harmonic has introduced its DiviCom Electra 8000, which it said is the worlds rst encoding and transcoding platform to support MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) and MPEG-2 codecs in both SD and HD formats. With the new encoder, Harmonic said cable operators can deliver up to four HD MPEG-2 services in one QAM. The Electra 8000s capability to decode and encode both MPEG-2 and AVC also enables operators to accommodate both existing and future architectures using a single hardware platform. For example, Harmonic said the Electra 8000 can be used to receive AVC content and re-encode in MPEG-2, supporting the growing trend toward primary distribution of content in AVC and HD formats. Service providers can also use the Electra 8000 to deploy SD MPEG-2.

RGB to demo technologies
WASHINGTON RGB Networks is demonstrating how its Broadcast Network Processor (BNP), Dynamic Bandwidth Manager (DBM) and Universal Scalable Modulator (USM) can work together to deliver a complete lineup of HD, SD and VOD programming with digital ad insertion and overlays. The BNP aggregates multiple HD and SD programs, transrates each for bandwidth efciency and picture quality, and inserts local ads and digital overlays. The DBM transrates VOD programs in real time. And the USM takes in the HD, SD and VOD programs output from the BNP and DBM and modulates them for delivery over the cable network.
Openet paving cables way to transaction-based model
WASHINGTON Openet, which cut its teeth handling a mind-boggling number of transactions daily for Verizon Wireless, AT&T, BT and other wireless carriers, has already got its foot in the door with two of the top-four U.S. MSOs and is using The Cable Show as its coming out party. Openet chief marketing ofcer Mike Manzo said its quiet work with its two MSO customers (demurely unnamed, of course) helped the vendor gather enough data to architect commercial products specically for the cable market. The new products, to be introduced in the coming months, include systems for audience and engagement measurement, convergent usage measurement and interactive services fulllment. The cable industry is based on subscription usage, but as MSOs look to expand and monetize their on-demand offerings, as they start offering more cross-platform services, and as they move into mobile services, they have to be ready and able to handle transaction-based usage. What Openet brings to the party is the ability to handle transaction volume no cable operator has ever dealt with before literally billions of transactions a day. Openet handles 15 billion transactions a day for Verizon alone, Manzo said. The Audience and Engagement Measurement system for the cable market provides the ability to measure subscriber activities across all video services, including linear and non-linear viewing data and clickstreams associated with iTV services. The Interactive Services Fulllment element allows operators to collect interaction information from EBIF and tru2way applications and forward the data to a fulllment server in order to respond to realtime subscriber requests. Targeted for high-speed data services, Openets Convergent Usage Measurement solution enables service providers to capture, collect and aggregate data and voice usage and distribute the data to downstream systems.
