Editorial

Dear Bicycle Retailer,
What's new? We are bombarded by this question every year at the Eurobike. Our response this year: Quite a lot.
We introduced the new VDO GP7, an innovative Bike GPS Navigator, already in June. What is so special about the GP7? The VDO GP7 provides routing and guiding in one appliance. What you've already known in a car since long, dynamic navigation and route calculation, now takes place in the outdoor area. Special vectorized topographic maps make it possible. Enter destination. the route is calculated. and off you go. Directions to turn and voice announcements point out the right way even in open terrain. With the VDO GP7's guiding function, you can retrace already cycled tracks. By our cooperation with Bike GPS, the great Alpine tours of this provider can be processed on the VDO GP7. The RichTrack format of the Bike GPS provides a detailed roadbook on the track with precise turning directions. The RichTrack format even provides details of the ground. Contact us for availability of GP7 for your country.

Series-A

We are launching a new Series-A in 2011. A new, fresh housing design and a bigger, more legible display are the external features of the new A. The new features are combined with the proven, easy operation and reliable function of the Series-A.

Series-X

The Series-X remains unchanged in the product range. High reliability and smooth function are the best proof of our continuous quality management. It is confirmed by a "GOOD" in a test by Stiftung Warentest, Germany's leading consumer safety group.

Series-Z

The Series-Z has performed even better. Top rating in technology. Among all the tested computers of the Z class, the Z3 PC-Link got the top rating in the technical test.

Series-HC/MC

MC 1.0 and HC 12.6 still remain in the range as low-priced entry level models with altitude measurement or heart rate measurement.

Environmental protection

Stiftung Warentest also confirms our good work in environmental protection. Top rating in the assessment of pollutants for the tested X2 and Z3 PC Link. As you can see, there are plenty of good news for 2011. We wish you every success with our product range! With kind regards

H.J. Noenen Management

SERIES-A

A VDO for any case

The SERIES-A

The models in the Series-A have been designed for cyclists of all age groups, hobby cyclists, those cycling on long trips, sporty holidays, weekend excursions and to and from work, but also for serious cyclists. For an entry-level price, even the cost-conscious sports and leisure cyclist can now get hold of the advanced technology and fine design from VDO.

Recommended use

Better readability
The new display is bigger. A new font design makes the numbers and letters clearly more readable. The display technology is also new. The green background enhances the contrast and makes the reading easier even under a bright sun.

Large display

The display on the Series-X is extra large. This has made it possible to increase the size of the digits for the speed and the other data. The text on the display has also been made easier to read. The time is permanently shown on the display. On the wireless models, the current cadence (option) is permanently displayed. The important details can thus be seen at a glance.

Wheel size setting using tyre size
On the Series-X the wheel size can either be selected from a tyre size table or, as previous, set in millimetres. This makes setting the wheel size more convenient.

Variable service intervals
Separate service intervals can be set for two bikes. Once the set number of kilometres or miles* is reached, the display shows that a bike service** is needed. This function can also be switched off. * **

New stopwatch functions

Time Trial Timer
Besides stopwatch, countdown, timer 1, timer 2, timer 1+2, the Series-X features a time trial timer and a lap timer. On the time trial timer the time trial distance is entered. After the start the timer works out the expected time required and shows the distance still to be cycled. The data is updated every 3 seconds. The lap timer saves the time, the distance cycled and the average for 30 laps. The laps can either be started manually or automatically after reaching a defined distance.

Universal mount

The Series-X comes with the familiar universal mount. The universal mount can either be fitted on the handlebar or the stem. The mount is fixed quickly and simply with cable ties.

Racy design

Taste can divide opinions. For the Series-X we asked the designer for racy lines and great curves. Decide for yourself. We think the Series-X has a good profile.

series-z

Trust is good. controlled performance is better

The SERIES-Z

In the Series-Z we bring you computer models with heart rate measurement, altitude measurement, cadence and PC analysis. The Series-Z is aimed at ambitious cyclists who wants to check their performance and also document and analyse it with the PC-Link models. All models in the Series-Z come with 3-channel, 2.4 GHz digital wireless technology for speed, heart rate and cadence. For the wireless protocol we rely on the established ANT+* protocol. This makes the models in the Series-Z compatible with products from other suppliers, which also use the ANT+* protocol. Innovative, top-class design makes the new Series-Z models into real head-turners. Besides the bike, heart rate, cadence and altitude functions, the Series-Z models also measure performance in WATT and calculate calorie consumption. The comprehensive PC evaluation program enables trips to be analysed in detail and allows individual training to be planned.

From biking to hiking

Hiking mode
All models can be switched from bike mode to hiking mode The Series-Z was indeed designed as a bike computer, but it can also be used for hiking, jogging, Nordic walking and other sports. The heart rate measurement is fully available in hiking mode. In the altitude measurement, the meters of uphill and downhill climbs are stored in the special hiking mode memory. Thus we are able to know the precise results while cycling or Nordic walking. For the hiking mode, the computer can be transformed into a sports watch with a well-adjustable wrist strap.

In the models Z1, Z3 and Z3 PC-Link, the wattage can be calculated. For this, the cadence must be installed. The calculation algorithm takes into account several adjustable influencing factors, such as Weight Rolling resistance (via tire type) Aerodynamic drag (via sitting position) Under the same conditions the watt display gives comparable watt values that can be used for an analysis of the training progress.

Abrasion test
Quality is based in production
Quality has to be produced. To do that successfully, quality controls are continually conducted during the entire production process. Printed circuit boards are checked, displays inspected and receiver chips must show that they can receive data. Only then are all the parts put together.

Pressure test

Full final inspection
At the end of production, a complete check on the function of each computer is made by our own quality inspection team. Wireless transmission, button function, software check, data download, rain test and climate chamber are just some of the stages in the final inspection.
Functional test before despatch
Only once this final inspection has been passed are the computers prepared for despatch. Before packing, another check is made on each appliance using an automatic test station.

General hint to read the following chapters: In the following you will often see this icon. Whenever you see this icon, use the UP/DOWN keys to nd the relevant menu option and accept it by pushing the M-key. 3. Initial operation, AC-(Auto clear)-button >>> P06 After installing the battery, your VDO computer brings up an English main menu. Select your language to begin with. a c TRIPDISTANCE / SETTINGS a c LANGUAGE / SELECT a c choose your language The computer then automatically returns to the main menu TRIPDISTANCE/SETTINGS (in your selected language).
Should your computer not function properly after installing the battery or you want to reset it to default values, push the AC-button on the rear of the housing. 4. Basic settings Basic settings are settings crucial to data measuring and operating the computer. Such as language, wheel size(s), clock. WATCH OUT: Any SET procedure must be completed (menu question ?SET OK? gets accepted by pushing M). Should a SET procedure not be completed, any data entered is not stored. 4.1 Language selection In case you want to change the language at any time, proceed as described under chapter 3.
4.2 Measuring and setting the wheel size(s) >>> P07 In order for your VDO computer to precisely calculate speed and distance, you have to measure the circumference of your wheels With an incorrect wheel size set, all related values like speed, trip distance, odometer etc. come out false. To make the use of your VDO computers possible on 2 bikes, i.e. Mountain Bike and Road Bike, you are able to set up 2 different wheel sizes. Measuring both wheel circumferences: step 1 Place the front wheel valve perpendicular to the ground step 2 Mark this spot on the ground for example with chalk step 3 Turn the wheel forward for one full circle until the valve is perpendicular to the ground again step 4 Also mark this spot. step 5 Measure the distance between the two spots (markings) This is your wheel size. step 6 Set-up your wheel size in your VDO computer as described below.
If you have selected the Metric system (KM) you have to enter your wheel size/s in millimeters. If you have selected English system (MI) you have to enter your wheel size/s in inches. TIP: Write down your wheel sizes on your VDO-User-Card for easy reference. The values listed in the chart are approximate. Depending on the tire brand, it is possible that these numbers deviate from your real tire circumference since height and tread pattern are likely to be different. Setting the wheel sizes : a c TRIPDISTANCE/SETTINGS a c WHEELSIZE/SET a c KMH-DISPLAY or MPH-DISPLAY to be selected <<actual wheel size 1 ashes>> a set wheel size 1 in [mm] or [in] (Press up/down key briey for 1 mm, keep pressing key for fast forward run) c ?SET OK? accept or return by pressing b and correct your entries. WHEELSIZE 1 / SET DONE pops up briey, to indicate data storage. Your computer now wants you to set wheel size 2.

If applicable, enter wheel size 2 as described above If you dont need to enter the second wheel size, hold the b key until the computer returns to main menu TRIPDISTANCE/SETTINGS. Watch out: Default settings for the wheel sizes are as follows: Bike 1 = 2155 mm and Bike 2 = 2000 mm. In case you dont set your individual wheel sizes, the computer works with default values. Readings for speed therefore are likely to deviate signicantly from the actual values.
