Energy saving technology and other benefits The new generation of Vivanco chargers is equipped with compact, low weight switched-mode power supplies. The power units do not just need up to 30% less power than standard power units with large transformers, but they are also so small that they can easily be integrated in the chargers. There is no longer any need to transport heavy additional power adapters. USB connections The Universal Serial Bus is today's standard connection between various devices and computers. Because this connection can be used to transfer not just data but also energy, many devices, such as MP3 players, PDAs, mobile phones, navigation devices etc., can be supplied with power by the computer. E.g. the integrated rechargeable batteries in a player are recharged when it is connected to a laptop. It is an obvious progression to also charge rechargeable batteries in chargers which can be connected to the computer via USB. This way, an MP3 player can be quickly re-powered, if necessary, using a laptop. Vivanco chargers which can be charged via USB, have a 5V USB power input. Sometimes though, a device which charges via USB is left without power and no computer is available. That's where mains adapters with a USB power output or chargers with and integrated USB charge adapter function can help. These devices output 5V when they are connected to the mains and not currently charging rechargeable batteries. They also have additional USB out sockets. The unique Vivanco CAR 3in1 Power Set also provides an emergency battery function, i.e. connected USB devices can be supplied with power from the rechargeable batteries inside the charger. Stabilised or non-stabilised?
Power adapters that do not provide stable regulated output voltage make voltage dependent on output current. A higher current drain causes lower output voltage. The electronics integrated into power adapters that regulate output ensure stabilised (stable) output voltage. Recommendation: Since almost all electrical appliances regulate their voltage internally, you can generally use a power adapter that does not provide regulated (stable) output voltage.

Linear or synchronised?

The highest level of audio pleasure or energy saving? Conventional, linear power units use thicker, heavier, more energy-consuming transformers for transmitting energy as the requirement increases, whilst synchronised, electronic switched-mode power units require only small transformers and light, space-saving electronics. Energy is transmitted at a high frequency and with very little loss. Devices which use this technology are known as "energy-saving" devices. Recommendation: Generally, you can use both linear and synchronised power unit. Synchronised power adapters should be preferred for economic and ecological reasons. They are also much lighter and automatically adapt to almost all mains voltages throughout the world (V, 50 60Hz. We do however recommend that purists use linear power units to supply audio devices as they emit less interference signals. Go Green! All switching power supplies are marked with the Go Green logo: Save more than 50% energy and protect the environment. Switching power supplies only draw higher power when a connected consumer uses energy. Linear power supplies not bearing this logo are often cheaper to buy but cost more during operation since they produce high heat losses and the user often pays for twice the energy his connected device needs.
