This would be a fine device if it was capable of formating hard drives without the need for a separate computer. A good on the road backup product if you are a hobby photographer. NOT as good a product for professional photographer. This is a great storage device for digital cameras! I put a 40GB Hard Drive in mine, and it works great! This device is easy to use.

I got this to replace my mini iPod which broke when I dropped it onto a tile floor. Before I went for holiday few months back, I bought a new 5 megapixel digital camera that comes with just 32 MB Compact Flash card.

4. Troubleshooting.

WARNING
Under no circumstances should you try to repair the system yourself, as this will Invalidate the warranty. Do not open the system as there is a risk of electronic shock. If a fault occurs, first check the points listed below before taking the system for repair. If you are unable to remedy a problem by following these hints, consult Your dealer or service center.
Problem While connected to the computer, the X's-drive Pro works great, but I cannot download files from the memory cards in the stand alone mode. Cause The disk or the memory cards are not formated to the FAT file systems. Solution To work in the stand-alone mode, both the disk and the memory cards must be formated to the FAT or FAT-32 file systems. Note: Win 2K/ Win XP can not support Format Disk for 32G above Hard Drive. Please back up the data in the memory card and run ScanDisk, ,Dsik Defragmenter or reformat the memory card. Under Windows, the 4 devices must be stopped by the Stop hardware utility Under MacOS, the mounted devices must be thrown to the bin Under Linux, the mounted devices must be unmounted by the unmount command. The driver must be installed before connecting the X's-drive Pro.
Why sometimes the data in memory card transferred into Hard Drive looks faulty on PC. When I disconnect the X'sdrive Pro from the computer , I get a message that I disconnected a device in an unsafe way.

There may be a chance of corrupt data or the memory card is damaged. The devices have not been stopped before disconnecting the X'sdrive Pro
Under Windows 98, the New hardware install wizard does not find a suitable driver in the CDROM
The X's-drive Pro has been connected before installing the driver
Problem Under Windows, when trying to access to the X'sDrive Pro's hard disk, Windows asks me to insert a disk into the drive (W98 states that the device is not ready) Under MacOS 8.6 / 9.x the disk is not detected, and I can only access to the SD/MMC/MS memory card slot When I connect or eject the X's-Drive Pro under MacOS X, the volume does not appear or disappear from the desktop I formated the disk by the MacOS X's Disk Utility, but it lasts very long in being mounted by either MacOS 9 or X, and Windows does not recognize the volume. Under MacOS X 10.0.x I have many problems with the disk, and I have even lost information When I insert the CDROM into the CDROM drive under Windows, nothing happens
Cause The hard disk device has been ejected
Solution The X's-Drive II must be disconnected and reconnected to the system Only the memory cards must be ejected before removing them out of their slot
The extension has not been installed

Install the extension

MacOS X issue
Move the mouse. Sometimes the FAT volumes do not appear or disappear until after the mouse is being moved.
The FAT-32 format made by MacOS X's Disk Utility is incorrect. Formating must be done under MacOS 9
MacOS 10.0.x does not adequately support FAT volumes. Upgrading to 10.1 or later is mandatory Run from the Explorer the Autorun.exe file located in the CD-ROM's root directory
The automatic execution of Autorun files from CDROM is not enabled in the system.
Problem Under Windows 2000 only one removable drive appears (corresponding to the SD/MMC/MS memory slot) Under Windows 98/2000, a red/yellow mark is shown in the Devices Manager next to the X's-Drive Pro. Under Windows there are 4 removable drives, but I cannot read/write I cannot stop the device under Windows XP
Cause The X's-Drive Pro has been connected before installing the driver
aSolution Install the driver at first and then update the X's-Drive's driver by the Devices Manager.
The driver has not been correctly installed
Reinstall the driver, or select "Update driver" in the drive's Properties window
The media is not formated
Format the disk and the memory cards
Windows XP issue: there is some open view of the X's-Drive Pro in My PC or in the Explorer Each removable drive icon disappears as soon as the corresponding device has been stopped

Close every open view of the X's-Drive Pro in My PC and in the Explorer, and stop the device afterwards To have all the drives visible again, the X's-Drive Pro must be disconnected and reconnected to the system
Under Windows, one or more of the X's-Drive Pro's removable drive icons has/have disappeared from My PC/Explorer When connecting the X's-Drive Pro under Linux, many input/output errors and READ CAPACITY errors with sns = 70 2, ASC = 3a, ASCQ = 0 are shown by the dmesg command
Nothing is wrong. This is only because the memory slot is empty at connecting time
First if all we have to re-compile the kernel with, in the SCSI options, the "scan all luns" checked. After a reboot, the Xdrive will appears associed with the following devices: /dev/sda, /dev/sdb and /dev/sdc are the card slots /dev/sdd is the internal harddisk.

Problem

aSolution Unlike mouting others hard disk wich require to specify a partition number, this is not applicable with the Xdrive, so to mount the Xdrive as/mnt/Xdrive (directory must be created before) we have to use the syntax mount/dev /sdd/mnt/Xdrive. In my case the system autodetect the vfat (fat32) filesystem. As ever with linux, users have to unmount the mounted card slots and/or the drive before disconnection the usb cable.
I want to format the partition under Linux, but I don't find the mkfs.msdos command I have formated the X's-Drive Pro under Windows, but I cannot mount the volume under Linux by the mount /dev/sdd1 command I cannot make a back-up larger than 4 GB, although my X's-Drive Pro has more than that free space
The package is not installed
Install the Dosutils package Alternately, the partition can be formated under Windows or MacOS 9 To mount a Superfloppy volume under Linux, a partition number must not be specified in the device name: mount/dev/sdd
A different volume format called Superfloppy (not including a partition) is made by Windows
FAT-32 file system limitation
The FAT-32 file system allows for files up to 4 GB in length. Split the back-up into blocks smaller than 4 GB
5. Frequently Asked Questions
Question What should I do if the X's-Drive Pro icon does not appear/disappear on the screen after inserting /extracting? For the X's-Drive Pro without Hard Disk, how easy can a 2.5 inches HD be installed? Answer Simply click the " view " menu and select " Refresh " or press " F5 " on the keyboard.

If you insert your own Hard drive into the X's drive, it will work if it has already been partitioned and formatted FAT. Your 2.5 inches Hard drive must be 9.5mm thick-a 12mm won't fit in. You cannot partition a HD via the Xs-drive connected on the USB port. You only can format the Hard Disk via the USB connection. Under MacOS, you can format by the Erase Disk option in the Finder's Special menu. The X's-Drive cannot be formated by the MacOS X's Disk Utility. Under Windows, you can format by the Format option in the drive's menu Under Linux, a partition must be created by fdisk, and then formated by mkfs.msdos. Because Windows 2000 can not format the new Hard Disk that doesn't have Partition Table, please format the Hard Disk on other operating system.
How to format the X's-Drive ?
I formated the Hard Disk under Windows 2000 but the PC still can not detec the Hard Disk? How many partitions can be made in the X's-Drive?
Under MacOS and Windows only ONE volume spanning all the disk space can be done. Should the disk be previously partitioned, every partition can be reformated, but the number or size of the partitions cannot be changed. Under Linux several partitions can be created by fdisk
Question Can I work with the X's-Drive under DOS or Windows NT, or booting Windows off a floppy disk, or booting Windows to the DOS symbol only? Can I work with the X's-Drive booting a system off a floppy disk or CDROM? When I connect the X's-Drive without the AC adapter to the USB port of my computer, it is powered automatically. Is the X'S-Drive powered by the USB port? I cannot transfer from my memory card to the X's-Drive at the end of the transfer, a ERROR READING icon is flashing. What is wrong? What is the purpose of the Reset button on the X's-Drive?
Answer As of today NO. DOS and Windows NT do not support USB. The only way to work with USB disks under systems not supporting USB, would be that the system BIOS could support USB disks.
As of today only Linux supports USB when booting off a floppy disk or CDROM. Linux microdistributions on CDROM are available from third-parties.
When the X's Drive is connected to your computer via USB, it won't be powered by it. Thus the batteries will be drained if you don't connect the AC adapter.
To fix this problem, you need to format your memory card or Hard Disk prior to it use with the X's-Drive. The memory card will work fine after.
In case that the X's-Drive II hangs, you can reset it via this button-note that the data on the Hard disk will not be affected.
Question My computer only has USB-1 ports available. Can the X's-Drive be connected? Can I format the X's-Drive to the NTFS/HFS/HFS+ /EXT2, etc, file systems? Can I share the X's-Drive among MacOS, Windows and Linux?

Answer The X's-Drive is an USB-2 device, but it does not matter. Both USB-1 and USB-2 devices can be connected to USB-1 ports, as they are detected and managed in the corresponding way. The files downloading function from the memory cards to the hard disk is compatible only with the FAT/FAT-32 file systems (MacOS calls it DOS format). Yes, as all of them are compatible with the FAT file systems. Formating can be done under any of them (except under MacOS X), and files can be shared among all of them. USB disks are supported under Linux from kernel 2.4.x. USB drivers are included in kernel 2.4.18 or later, and there are USB packages available to install under earlier 2.4.x versions.
How to work with the X'sDrive under Linux? Are drivers needed?

Hard Disk Assembly Chart
