WARNING

Always follow the basic precautions listed below to avoid the possibility of serious injury or even death from electrical shock, short-circuiting, damages, re or other hazards. These precautions include, but are not limited to, the following:

Do not open

Do not open the device or attempt to disassemble the internal parts or modify them in any way. The device contains no userserviceable parts. If it should appear to be malfunctioning, discontinue use immediately and have it inspected by qualied Yamaha service personnel.

Water warning

Do not expose the device to rain, use it near water or in damp or wet conditions, or place containers on it containing liquids which might spill into any openings.

CAUTION

Always follow the basic precautions listed below to avoid the possibility of physical injury to you or others, or damage to the device or other property. These precautions include, but are not limited to, the following:

Location

If you use a stand, check the stands specications and make sure that it is sturdy enough to support the weight of the speaker. You may need to limit the number of people around the placed stand, in order to avoid toppling the device or causing damage to the internal components. If you use the TS-80 and TS-90 speaker stands manufactured by Ultimate Systems (sold separately) to support the AX10/ AX12/AX15/AX12M/AX15M speaker models, be sure to keep the following cautions. Use the speaker stands with their legs fully opened. Place only one speaker on each speaker stand. Tighten fastening screws securely. Remove the speakers from the stands before moving the stands or adjusting their height. Add weight such as sand bags around the stand legs to prevent them from falling over. Use the stand at a maximum height of 140 cm. If you use a metal socket of the AX15W subwoofer to allow mounting of a satellite speaker, use a pole shorter than 90cm with an outer diameter of 35mm. When transporting or moving the device, always use two or more people. Before moving the device, remove all connected cables. Do not expose the device to excessive dust or vibrations, or extreme cold or heat (such as in direct sunlight, near a heater) to prevent the possibility of panel disguration or damage to the internal components. Do not place the device in an unstable position where it might accidentally fall over.

Connections

Before connecting the device to other devices, turn off the power for all devices. Before turning the power on or off for all devices, set all volume levels to minimum. Use only speaker cables for connecting speakers to the speaker jacks. Use of other types of cables may result in re. Be sure to observe the ampliers rated load impedance (see page 5), particularly when connecting speakers in parallel. Connecting an impedance load outside the ampliers rated range can damage the amplier.

Handling caution

Always turn AC power to the power amplier on last in any audio system to avoid speaker damage. When turning power off, the power amplier should be turned off rst for the same reason.

PRECAUTIONS

This product, when used in combination with amplication and/or additional loudspeakers, may be capable of producing sound levels that could cause permanent hearing loss. DO NOT operate at high volume levels or at a level that is uncomfortable. If you experience any discomfort or ringing in the ears, or suspect an hearing loss, you should consult an audiologist.

Poly Switch

All full-range loudspeakers are tted with a self-resetting poly switch that protects the high-frequency driver from damage caused by excessive power. If a loudspeaker cabinet loses high-frequency output, immediately remove power from the unit and wait for two to three minutes. They should allow the poly switch to reset. Re-apply power and check the performance of the high-frequency driver before continuing with the power reduced to a level that does not cause the poly switch to interrupt the signal. In any system using two or more speakers, be sure to match the connection polarities of all speakers to the amplier(s) e.g. always connect + to + and - to -. If the polarities are not properly matched the speakers will be driven out of phase and the sound will suffer. Use only Neutrik NL4FC plugs for connecting Speakon connectors. Yamaha cannot be held responsible for damage caused by improper use or modications to the device. * Illustrations in this manual are for explanatory purposes only, and may not match the actual appearance of the product during operation. * Company names and product names used in this Owners Manual are trademarks or registered trademarks of their respective owners.

To protect your speakers

When choosing a power amplier to use with your speakers, make sure that its power output matches the speakers power capacity (refer to the Specications on page 5). Even if the ampliers power output is lower than the speakers PGM (program) power capacity, the speakers may be damaged when clipping of a high input signal occurs. The following may cause damage to speakers: Feedback caused when using a microphone. Continuous high sound pressure level produced by electronic instruments. Continuous high-power output distorted signals. Popping noises caused by turning on equipment, or by connecting or disconnecting system components while the amplier is turned on.
Before Making Connections

I Phone Plug Wiring

Phone plugs for connection to the phone jack inputs should be wired as shown to the right. Be sure to use proper speaker cable NOT shielded instrument or line cable for all speaker connections.
I Neutrik NL4FC Plug Wiring
If you will be using the Neutrik connectors for speaker input, wire the plugs as shown to the right. Be sure to use proper speaker cable NOT shielded instrument or line cable for all speaker connections.
2 (NO USE) 1+ : HOT(+) 1 :COLD () Neutrik NL4FC connector 2+ (NO USE)
The subwoofer AX15W features four input/parallel connectorstwo 1/4 phone jacks and two Neutrik NL4MP connectors. Use either a phone jack or a Neutrik connector to receive input from your sound system/power amplier. One of the spare connectors can be used to parallel-connect an additional main speaker (keeping in mind the impedance considerations mentioned below).
I Impedance Considerations
When connecting speakers in parallel be sure to check the rated load impedance of the power amplier. Most power ampliers are capable of safely driving speakers with minimum impedance of 8 ohms or 4 ohms. A pair of parallelconnected 8-ohm speakers have a total impedance of 4 ohms. The AX10/AX12/AX15/AX12M/AX15M are 8-ohm speakers, and two of these can safely be paralleled on one output. Two or more speakers can be connected in parallel, however, if you are using a power amplier that can safely drive load impedances of 4 ohms or lower.

If the socket outlets in the home are not suitable for the plug supplied with this appliance, it should be cut off and an appropriate 3 pin plug fitted. For details, refer to the instructions described below. Note: The plug severed from the mains lead must be destroyed, as a plug with bared flexible cord is hazardous if engaged in a live socket outlet.
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR U.K. MODEL
IMPORTANT: The wire in the mains lead are coloured in accordance with the following code: Blue: NEUTRAL Brown: LIVE The colours of the wires in the mains lead of this apparatus may not correspond with the coloured markings identifying the terminals in your plug. Proceed as follows: the wire which is coloured BLUE must be connected to the terminal which is marked with the letter N or coloured BLACK. The wire which is coloured BROWN must be connected to the terminal which is marked with the letter L or coloured RED. Making sure that neither core is connected to the earth terminal of the three pin plug.
10. To prevent lightning damage, disconnect the AC power plug and 11. Grounding or polarization Precautions should be taken so that
the grounding or polarization of an appliance is not defeated.

12. AC outlet

Do not connect audio equipment to the AC outlet on the rear panel if that equipment requires more power than the outlet is rated to provide.
13. Voltage Selector (General Model only)
The voltage selector on the rear panel of this unit must be set for your local main voltage BEFORE plugging into the AC main supply. Voltages are 110/120/220/240V AC, 50/60 Hz.
The apparatus is not disconnected from the AC power source as long as it is connected to the wall outlet, even if the apparatus itself is turned off.

CONNECTIONS

Before attempting to make any connections to or from this unit, be sure to first switch OFF the power to this unit and to any other components to which connections are being made. q When making connections between this unit and other components, be sure all connections are made correctly, that is to say L (left) to L, R (right) to R, + to + and to. Also, refer to the owners manual for each component to be connected to this unit. * For a system connection with YAMAHA CDX-10, TX-10 and KX-10, connections can be made easily by making sure to connect the output (or input) terminals of each component to the same-numbered terminals of this unit.

CONNECTING SPEAKERS

Connect the SPEAKERS terminals to your speakers with wire of the proper gauge, cut as short as possible. If the connections are faulty, no sound will be heard from the speakers. Make sure that the polarity of the speaker wires is correct, that is, + and markings are observed. If these wires are reversed, the sound will be unnatural and will lack bass. Do not let the bare speaker wires touch each other and do not let them touch the metal parts of this unit as this could damage this unit and/or speakers. q One or two speaker systems can be connected to this unit. If you connect only one speaker system, connect it to either the SPEAKERS A or B terminals. q Use speakers with the specified impedance shown on the rear of this unit. How to Connect: Red: positive (+) Black: negative ()
Unscrew the knob. Insert the bare wire. 3
[Remove approx. 5mm (1/4) insulation from the speaker wires.] Tighten the knob and secure the wire.
ABOUT THE ACCESSORY TERMINALS

AC OUTLETS (SWITCHED)

Use these to connect the power cords from your components to this unit. The power to the SWITCHED outlets is controlled by this units POWER switch or the provided remote control transmitters POWER key. These outlets will supply power to any component whenever this unit is turned on. The maximum power (total power consumption of components) that can be connected to the SWITCHED AC OUTLETS is 100 watts.
PRE OUT/MAIN IN terminals
Removing the jumper pins enables this unit to independently perform the functions of a control amplifier and a power amplifier. These terminals are for connection of a signalprocessing system such as a graphic equalizer or sound processor. If a sound processor or other external unit is connected between these terminals, the VOLUME control of this unit can be used for overall adjustment of the level of sound. To connect such a unit, remove the jumper pins from the PRE OUT/MAIN IN terminals, connect the inputs of that unit to the PRE OUT terminals and its outputs to the MAIN IN terminals. For details, refer to the owners manual included with the unit to be connected.
GND terminal (For turntable use)
Connecting the ground wire of the turntable to this terminal will normally minimize hum, but in some cases better results may be obtained with the ground wire disconnected.

Notes If you will not use the PRE OUT/MAIN IN terminals, never remove the jumper pins from these terminals. If removed, no sound will be output from this unit. q If you will use this unit with an external unit connected between the PRE OUT and MAIN IN terminals, make sure that the PURE DIRECT switch on the front panel is turned off. q If you will use this unit as a power amplifier, connect the outputs of an external control amplifier etc. to this units MAIN IN terminals. In that case, this units controls will not function except the PHONES jack and the SPEAKERS switches, so use the controls on the external control amplifier to make volume adjustment etc.

Battery replacement

If you find that the remote control transmitter must be used closer to the main unit, the batteries are weak. Replace both batteries with new ones. Notes q Use only AA, R6, UM-3 batteries for replacement. q Be sure the polarities are correct. (See the illustration inside the battery compartment.) q Remove the batteries if the remote control transmitter will not be used for an extended period of time. q If batteries leak, dispose of them immediately. Avoid touching the leaked material or letting it come in contact with clothing, etc. Clean the battery compartment thoroughly before installing new batteries.
Notes q There should be no large obstacles between the remote control transmitter and the main unit. q If the remote control sensor is directly illuminated by strong lighting (especially an inverter type of fluorescent lamp etc.), it might cause the remote control transmitter not to work correctly. In this case, reposition the main unit to avoid direct lighting.

TROUBLESHOOTING

If the unit fails to operate normally, check the following points to determine whether the fault can be corrected by the simple measures suggested. If it cannot be corrected, or if the fault is not listed in the SYMPTOM column, disconnect the power cord and contact your authorized YAMAHA dealer or service center for help.
SYMPTOM The unit fails to turn on when the POWER switch is pressed. No sound. CAUSE Power cord is not plugged in or is not completely inserted. Incorrect output cord connections. Appropriate input source is not selected. Speaker connections are not secure. The sound suddenly goes off. Only one side speaker outputs the sound. The protection circuit has activated because of short circuit etc. Incorrect setting of the BALANCE control. Incorrect cord connections. There is a lack of bass, and no ambience. Sound hums. The + and wires are connected in reverse at the amplifier or speakers. Incorrect cord connections. REMEDY Firmly plug in the power cord. Connect the cords properly. If the problem persists, the cords may be defective. Select an appropriate input source with the INPUT selector. Secure the connections. Turning the unit off and then on will reset the protection circuit. Adjust it to the appropriate position. Connect the cords properly. If the problem persists, the cords may be defective. Connect the speaker wires in the correct phase (+ and ). Firmly connect the audio plugs. If the problem persists, the cords may be defective. Make the GND connection between the turntable and this unit. The PURE DIRECT switch must be switched OFF to use those controls. Change position of the main unit.
No connection from the turntable to the GND terminal. Using the BASS, TREBLE and BALANCE controls does not affect the tone. The remote control transmitter does not work. The distance or range within which the remote control transmitter can be used decreases. The PURE DIRECT switch is ON. Direct sunlight or lighting (of an inverter type of flourescent lamp etc.) is striking the remote control sensor of the main unit. The batteries of this remote control transmitter are too weak.
Replace the batteries with new ones.
