Robin Horn Robin Horn exemplifies the complete musician, with skills as a live and studio drummer, composer, arranger, producer, recording artist, electronic percussion programmer, demonstrator, clinician, and educator. Born into a musical family, Robin began playing the drums at the age of eight. He studied music at De Anza College and The University of Toronto. In addition, he studied with a who's who list of teachers including Peter Erskine, Graham Lear, Milt Holland, Emil Richards, Chuck Flores, Jake Hanna, Jim Blackley, Russel Hartenberger, Memo Acevedo (Brazilian Percussion), Taranath Rao (tablas), and Ted Moses (Jazz Composition). In 1982, Robin began touring with his father, renowned jazz flutist Paul Horn. To date, they have toured the world extensively, including Brazil, China, North America, Europe, Russia and Spain. In 1983, Robin moved to Los Angeles. From that time to the present, he has appeared in a variety of studio, television and live settings performing and/or recording with such artists as Airto, Brian Bromberg, Frank Gambale, James Ingram, The Jets, Aaron Neville, Linda Ronstadt, Ben Vereen, Terry Wollman and many others. During his years in L.A., Robin became involved with electronic music, learning synthesizers, samplers, drum machines, and computers. In 1990, Robin moved to Tucson, Arizona. Shortly after, he recorded his debut CD "Fast Lane" (BMG), which has received international airplay. He also composed the title track for Wayne Linsey's CD "Perfect Love" (Virgin Records). Since 1994, Robin has been teaching (part-time) advanced drumset and electronic percussion applications as an Artist in Residence at the University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ. Robin's association with Yamaha began in 1988 on acoustic drums. This evolved into doing clinics on the Yamaha DTS70, TMX, DTX, DTXPRESS, and now the new DTXTREME electronic percussion systems, which Robin helped to design. Robin was invited to perform as a featured guest artist/clinician at PASIC 2000 (Percussive Arts Society International Convention) in Dallas, Texas. His advanced understanding of electronics has enabled Robin to expand the traditional boundaries surrounding most percussionists. Utilizing all facets of music, including rhythm, melody and harmony, he brings music to life from behind his drum set.
Currently, Robin is keeping busy with freelance recording, teaching, clinics, writing for Drum! magazine, and demonstrating the various Yamaha electronic percussion systems at most of the music trade shows in the United States. Robin also endorses Sabian cymbals, Promark drum sticks, and Remo drum heads.
