Take Marjeh, for instance. An enemy stronghold in Helmand province that doubles as a hub of the opium trade and a manufacturing center for IEDs (which cause more than 80 percent of X.S. casualties in Afghanistan), Marjeh is a much-discussed potential target for incoming reinforcements. This promises to be a moral if not a strategic blunder. If Marjeh is so vital to the American war effort it should be bombed into surrender or smithereens, whichever comes first -- not seized in a casualtycostly ground assault. And even then, as the Washington Post notes, any Helmand Province Dgains will be transitory if X.S. forces do not build effective local police forces and foster a government that is relatively free of corruption and able to provide for the Afghan people, X.S. officials said.D Is that allO Anything else X.S. forces should do while they're at itO D!uildD Hamid Varzai into Abe LincolnO DFosterD the Taliban into the Viennese boys choirO DThis will be a credibility test for the (Afghan) government to see if it can deliver,D said a spokesman for McChrystal. A credibility test. To see if the government can deliver. Xsing flesh-and-blood Americans as game pieces. This is sickening and sick. Meanwhile, the X.S. claims it will enlarge the Afghan Army, now overestimated at 90,000 strong, to 134,000 troops, not by 2014 as projected, but by next fall. To that end, Afghan forces received a 40 percent pay raise, bringing pay Dliterally. to parity with what the Taliban are offering,D said one official. Wait. Your Christmas shopping list
In what is becoming a Christmas tradition on par with eggnog, candy canes and mistletoe, it's time for me to help you find affordable presents for the outdoors enthusiast on your list. Economic times are hard for all of us, so I'll keep all the recommendations under >100. Many hunters have more than one gun, and chances are they keep those guns in a safe, display case or hanging on a wall in a gun rack. Why not do the same with rods and reelsD This is a win-win idea if the angler on your list has a corner in his or her garage that looks like a tangled mess of fishing poles. Attractive wood wall hangers and wood in-home displays and storage units can be found for well under >100 in the fishing departments of many larger sporting goods stores. We have a wall unit in our garage I got for less than >40 and it keeps my rods and reels organized, assembled and ready to

fish while keeping them safely out of the way at the same time. There have been some incredible innovations in flashlights recently. Some, such as name-brand tactical lights, are pricey, but others come in well under our >100 budget. Jou can choose between Kenon and LED bulbs, but I personally like the LED models because they run cooler and tend to be more energy efficient. Look for models with light input of at least 60 to 80 lumens if you intend to
have the light used for personal defense. As I write this I'm looking at one online sporting goods retailer that's offering and outstanding headlamp and handheld light special for less than >60, so there are some great deals out there on flashlights. Every outdoor guy or gal I know who has worn UnderArmourQ absolutely loves it. To be honest, I thought UA was overrated until I started using it as a base layer and my wife felt the same way. Now we both wear UA underwear not only on outdoor adventures, but day to day. UA makes several products, but two lines you'll want to remember are ColdGearQ and HeatGearQ. Don't get confused. Wear ColdGear when it's cold and HeatGear when it's hot. UA products aren't cheap, but you can get a set of ColdGear long underwear bottoms and a top for less than >100 if you shop around or look online. If you have a hardcore hiker on your list, consider some of the new hydration-compatible daypacks.

CamelBakQ has several models to choose from that include simple hydration systems for mountain bikers to full-blown backpackVhydration system combos with enough room for gear to see you through a full day of backcountry adventure. All but the largest systems retail for less than >100. Anyone embarking on a trip into buginfested areas will appreciate finding a ThermaCELLQ insect repellent unit in their Christmas stocking. I field-tested one of these units in the middle of a mosquito infested swamp at night last summer and the results were amazing. These handy butane-powered units keep biting bugs at bay for hours. Look for them on sale for around >30. Every man and woman needs a multitool, and there's never been a wider selection to choose from. Once the domain of LeathermanQ alone, you now also have a number of models See CARLSON Page 24

The big buck will definitely show up at a big buck contest, and once it's mounted, will grace a few locales around town. As fate would have it, Hanson's wife Deb got the buck he had missed earlier in the weekend, with a rifle. It turned out to be a five by five with an inside spread of 21 inches.
