Convenient Features

Flexible installation options with supplied mounting brackets Weather resistant 5-way binding post speaker terminals Powder-coated aluminum speaker grilles Supplied rubber feet for desktop/bookshelf placement Wide range of applications for home theaters, small commercial spaces and public buildings Three models to meet all types of application requirements
High Quality and Durability Excellent Audio Performance Yamaha drew on its long experience as a manufacturer of top quality HiFi speaker systems to develop these three all-weather models. We were able to make them extremely durable while still maintaining audio performance up to Yamaha standards. The woofer uses a highly responsive cone and a fluid-cooled soft dome tweeter, both specially processed for water resistance. The internal structure has been carefully designed for optimal time alignment between the two units, providing proper sound imaging. A waveguide and front baffle ensure good sound dispersion characteristics. Tonal clarity in all frequency ranges is excellent, with very low distortion.
Versatile Applications Designed primarily for use as outdoor speakers, they can add to the fun of backyard parties, supply background music on patios and decks or be mounted in or near the garage. They can be used indoors or outdoors at public facilities, as well as inside shops. And of course, they can also serve as surround speakers in home theater installations. Professional Design Various Installation Possibilities The bracket that comes with each speaker can be adjusted in multiple ways, providing a wide variety of installation possibilities. On the wall, on the ceiling, on the floor, with either
end facing up, or even horizontally, with a 90 adjustment range. Virtually any way the customer wants to install them is possible.
Unique Cosmetic Design The NS-AW392, NS-AW592 and NS-AW992 have a unique, appealing design that sets them apart from other outdoor speakers, most of which are box-shaped. Even though they stand out on their own, once you install them you'll find they nicely match the exterior or interior decor.
New waterproof woofer and soft dome tweeter
All-Weather Construction With a plastic cabinet and specially processed woofer and tweeter, these speakers will perform reliably when mounted outdoors. They are water resistant, and are not affected by sunlight (UV rays) or high or low temperatures.

OWNERS MANUAL

CONSUMER PRECAUTIONS
Read these precautions carefully before installing your NS-IW280C speakers. Before you begin installation, read this owners manual completely and consult your local building codes. If you have any doubt, contact your dealer or a qualified audio/video installer. YAMAHA recommends installing the speaker only in two-by-four wood frame or similar construction. The instructions provided in this owners manual are intended specifically for this type of wall construction. When installing your NS-IW280C in-ceiling speakers, be aware of the product weight (See specification page) and the sturdiness of the material into which you are installing the speaker. Be aware of any concealed studs, electrical wiring or plumbing in the wall or ceiling into which you are installing the speakers. If you are not sure of a safe way to install these speakers, consult a professional installer or a building contractor. Never touch the woofer or tweeter units with your hands or expose them to excessive physical shock. If they are dented or bent, the sound will be distorted. Lower the power amplifier/receiver volume control before changing input sources. Never change input sources (for example, FM to CD) at high listening levels. Always turn the receiver/amplifier unit off when installing or removing any cables. Anytime you note distortion, reduce the volume control on your power amplifier/receiver to a lower setting. Never allow your power amplifier to be driven into clipping. Secure placement or installation is the owners responsibility. YAMAHA shall not be liable for any accident caused by improper placement or installation of speakers. WARNING: Installation shall be in accordance with the applicable section of the National Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA 70, and/or the National Fire Alarm Code, ANSI/NFPA 72, as applicable. The wiring method and compartment shall be such as not to interfere with the operation of the speaker.

TOOLS NEEDED

Sturdy wire (such as a coat hanger)

SPEAKER PLACEMENT
These speakers are not magnetically shielded. Avoid installing the speakers too close to your TV.

Stereo

For best stereo performance, install the left and right speakers at equal distance from the listening position. Each speaker should be separated by a distance of 610 ft.

Home Theater

Use these speakers for left and right surround channels. Surround speakers should ideally be placed behind the listening area, at least as far apart as the front speakers and up to 2 additional feet apart per side.

INSTALLATION

Before installation, check to ensure that the area you are installing the speaker is free of any ceiling joints, by tapping the ceiling or using a stud finder. If you wish to paint the speaker frame and grill, please refer to page 7 PAINTING THE SPEAKER FRAME AND GRILL before proceeding.
Position the cutout template where you are installing the speaker. Then trace around the template with a pencil.
Cut the ceiling along the outline you traced.
Drill a pilot hole in the center outline you traced.
Run high quality speaker cable from your receiver to your speakers. Leave a few extra feet of cable.
Insert the bent coat hanger wire into the hole. Then slowly rotate to check for any obstruction. If there is any obstruction, patch the hole and select another location.
Note: You can insulate the cavity by placing a sheet of fiberglass insulation around the speaker components to improve speaker performance.
Connect the speaker cable to the speaker and your receiver. Please refer to page 6, CONNECTIONS section for detailed instructions.
Note: You can swivel the tweeter to direct high frequency sounds precisely toward the listening position by gently pressing the outer edge of the tweeter mount.
Place the speaker into the ceiling and aim the woofer toward the primary listening area by rotating the unit itself. Loosen each mounting screw by turning it counterclockwise one complete turn. This will release the mounting clamp from its shipping position.
Attach the grill to the frame.

Glue strips

Tighten each of the four mounting screws evenly until the mounting clamp grips the ceiling finger tight. Now tighten each screw one additional turn only. This will secure the speaker firmly to the ceiling. Note: For secure grill attachment, application of the supplied glue strips is recommended. Recommended Glue Strip Location Note: We recommend using only hand tools as powered drivers may over-tighten the screws. Should you use a power screwdriver be certain to select a very low torque setting to prevent damage to the speaker or to the wallboard.

CONNECTIONS

Connect the push-type input terminals at the rear of the speakers to the speaker output terminals of the receiver. Connect the (+) terminals on the receiver and speakers using the corresponding side of the cable. Connect the () terminals on both components using the other side of the cable.

Receiver

Notes: Make sure that the bare wires are not touching each other as this could damage the speaker and receiver. Connect one speaker to the left terminals of your receiver, and another speaker to the right terminals, making sure not to reverse the polarity (+, ). If one speaker is connected with reversed polarity, the sound will be unnatural and lack bass.

How to connect

1 Remove the insulation coating at the extremity of each speaker cable by twisting the coating off. 2 Press and hold down the speaker terminal. 3 Insert the bare wire. 4 Release the terminal. Test the firmness of the connection by pulling lightly on the cable at the terminal.

When using a banana plug

1 Insert the banana plug into the top of the terminal as shown below:

PAINTING THE SPEAKER FRAME AND GRILL
The speaker frame and grill can be painted to match your room dcor. Use high quality spray paint and select a well ventilated area before proceeding.

Painting the frame

1 Remove the speaker from the ceiling if it is already installed. Also, remove the grill from the baffle. 2 Mask the speaker components and the baffle with the supplied paint protective cover. 3 Apply the paint to the frame.

Painting the grill

1 Carefully remove the grill from the speaker, if attached. 2 Apply the paint to the grill. Make sure that the grill holes remain free of paint. Clogging the holes with paint may diminish the sound quality.
