Yamaha Motor Corporation, U.S.A. posts this notice as a service to Yamaha customers and potential Yamaha customers. Yamaha Motor Corporation, U.S.A. has determined a defect relating to motor vehicle safety exists in all 2007 Phazer, Phazer FX, Phazer GT, Phazer Mountain Lite, and Venture Lite model snowmobiles. Affected Models All 2007 PZ50W, Phazer All 2007 PZ50FXW, Phazer FX All 2007 PZ50GTW, Phazer GT All 2007 PZ50MW, Phazer Mountain Lite All 2007 PZ50VTW, Venture Lite The reason for this recall: In affected snowmobiles, the clevis type pins used to prevent the steering idler arm nuts from falling off could dislodge. Without these clevis pins in place, the idler arm nuts could fall off if they become loose. If both nuts fall off, steering components could come apart, resulting in loss of steering control and a vehicle crash possibly resulting in injury or death. What Yamaha and your dealer will do: To correct this possible defect, Yamaha is initiating a Factory Modification Campaign in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Affected snowmobiles must have the steering idler arm bolts, nuts, and collars replaced, the bolts tightened to a new torque specification, and the clevis type pins replaced with cotter pins. There will be no charge to you for this procedure. What you should do now: Snowmobiles that are affected should not be operated until they are modified. Validation of Sensors of an Alaska Instrumented Vehicle - Duke Green, Aurelia Korthauer, Janine Way: Information available about tire-snow interaction is limited due to the variability of snow. In order to improve these interactions and manufacture a better tire, experimentations using sensors must be established initially. This senior design team focused on validating the sensors mounted onto a 2008 Jeep Commander, by comparing results from gathered data through testing to information found in literature. Wind Turbine - Ben Kellie, Patrick O'Callaghan, Jet Tasker, Tristan Kitchin: The UAF Wind Team is developing a wind turbine that utilizes an axial-flux permanent magnet generator in order to examine viability for rural Alaska. The design is based on the work of Hugh Piggott of Scoraig Wind Electric but modified to accommodate Alaskas wide range of seasonal weather conditions.
Snowmobile Engine Fuel Conversion - Michele Helkenn & Alvin Deighton: The focus of this project is modifying a stock recreational vehicle to run on flexible fuels, using a 2007 Yamaha Phazer Mountain Lite snowmobile. By using the basic model followed by all large vehicle manufacturing companies, the team has converted this snowmobile to give it the capability of retaining performance and efficiency while burning ethanol fuels for the purpose of reducing exhaust emissions. Concentric Heat Exchanger - Eric Lanser, Jonathan R. Michaud, Marcus P. Curley, John C. Phillips: Energy is becoming an increasingly important issue as concern for climate change grows, and energy prices soar. For home construction, the new top end standard in energy-efficiency is the creation of an air-tight home. However, an air tight house can cause health problems when the air trapped within becomes stagnant. Our team designed and built a concentric air-to-air heat exchanger that bridges the gap between an inexpensive and energy inefficient exhaust only system and an expensive but energy efficient HRV system. Iditarod Alcohol Stove - Cody Bell, Mitchell O'Bryant, Jacob Odegard, Sterling Rearden: Iditarod participants are required to have "one operational cooker and pot capable of boiling at least three (3) gallons of water at one time." Current designs leave room for improvement in many areas including fuel usage, boil time, weight, ease of use, and safety. Our team designed and constructed an operational alcohol stove competitive with current designs using lightweight materials and heat transfer engineering.
Liquid-Gas Emulsion - Nicholas Middelstadt, Michael B. Morris: Liquid-gas emulsion is an area relatively undeveloped in the microfluidic world. Emulsions using liquid-liquid currently are used in many areas of biology and chemistry for rapid reagent mixing and testing. Using soft-lithography a device capable of liquid-gas emulsion is fabricated and the relation of flow rates to droplet sizes is determined.
Multitouch UAF - J. Holbrook, K. Wendler & L. Anders: A large-scale multitouch screen has been built utilizing Diffused Surface Illumination. This screen provides a framework for studying multitouch interfaces such as those used with the Microsoft Surface or Perceptive Pixel touchscreens, particularly for scientific or engineering applications.
Magnus Rotor - Christopher J. Bender Jr, Dustin Ray, Ryan S Duffy: This experiment assessed the Magnus effect over different surface types in terms of roughness by adhering different grain sizes of sandpaper to a rotating cylinder. A wind tunnel was used for testing, fixed to a dynamometer for viewable results. Data was then filtered and plotted. Alteration of the surface type improved lift and reduced drag discernibly in this study.
