Taking Care of Your PortaTone
Your PortaTone will give you years of playing pleasure if you follow the simple rules given below: 1. Avoid placing the PortaTone in areas that are subject to excessive humidity or heat. Do not leave the instrument near heaters or in a car exposed to direct sunlight, for example. 2. Avoid locations in which the instrument is likely to be exposed to excessive dust or moisture. 3. Connections between the PortaTone and any other device must be made with both pieces of equipment turned OFF. 4. Do not subject the instrument to strong physical shocks, and avoid placing heavy objects on it. 5. Use a soft cloth, dry or slightly damp, for cleaning. Never use chemicals such as benzine or thinner. 6. Since the PortaTone contains digital circuitry, it may cause interference if placed to close to radio or television receivers. If this occurs, move the instrument further away from the affected equipment.
Using An Optional Power Adaptor
Plug the DC output cable from an optional PA-3, PA-4 or PA-40 Power Adaptor into the DC(9-12V)IN jack on the rear panel, then plug the adaptor into a convenient wall AC power socket.
Use ONLY a Yamaha PA-3, PA-4 or PA-40 Power Adaptor to power your instrument from the AC mains. Attempting to use other AC adaptors could result in serious damage to your PSR-19.
Setting Up & Removing the Music Stand
The PSR-19 is supplied with a music stand that can be attached to the instrument by inserting the two pegs extending from its lower edge into the correponding holes on the rear-panel of the instrument. To remove the music stand, remove the pegs from the holes while leaning the stand toward the keyboard.
Power Supply
Your PSR-19 will run either from optional batteries or an optional power adaptor. Follow the instructions below according to the power source you intend to use.
Using Batteries
Six 1.5V D size (SUM-1 or R-20) or equivalent batteries must first be installed in the battery compartment. 1. Open the battery compartment cover located on the instruments bottom panel. 2. Insert the six batteries, being careful to follow the polarity markings on the cabinet. 3. Replace the compartment cover, making sure that it locks firmly in place.
Using Headphones or an External Sound System
The Rear-panel HEADPHONES/AUX.OUT Jack
A standard pair of stereo headphones can be plugged in here for private practice or late-night playing. The internal stereo speaker system is automatically shut off when a pair of headphones is plugged into the HEADPHONES/ AUX.OUT jack. The HEADPHONES/AUX.OUT jack can also be used to deliver the output of the PSR-19 to a keyboard amplifier, stereo sound system, mixing console or tape recorder. Use the optional Yamaha connecting cord to connect the HEADPHONES/AUX.OUT jack to your sound system.
Caution: 1. When the batteries run down, replace them with a complete set of six new batteries. NEVER mix old and new batteries. 2. To prevent possible damage due to battery leakage, remove the batteries from the instrument if it is not to be used for an extended period of time.
Optional Accessories
s s s s s AC Power Adaptor (PA-3/PA-4/PA-40) Headphones (HPE-3/HPE-5) Stand (L-2/L-4) Bench (BC-6) Stereo Connection Cord (PSC-3)
Use this cord to connect your PSR-19 to a stereo hi-fi system. Converts stereo pin jacks to a stereo phone plug. * Some optional accessories may not be available in all areas.
s Stereo Conversion Plug (PCP-1)

What is MIDI?
MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) is a world-standard interface for communication between electronic musical instruments and music devices. When MIDI-equipped instruments are connected via a MIDI cable, it becomes possible to transfer performance and setting data between them for signicantly enhanced performance and production potential.
Transferring Performance Data To and From Another Instrument
By connecting the PSR-E323/YPT-320 to other MIDI devices or a computer, the performance data of the instrument can be used on those other MIDI devices or computer, and also the performance data from other MIDI devices and computer can be received and sounded with the PSRE323/YPT-320. A Yamaha UX16 or similar USB-MIDI interface (sold separately) will be necessary for MIDI connection between the PSR-E323/YPT-320 and a USB-equipped computer. Make sure to purchase a Yamaha UX16 or a quality USB-MIDI interface at a musical instrument store, computer store or electrical appliance store. If you use the UX16 interface, install the driver supplied with the interface on your computer.
Connect the PSR-E323/YPT-320 to external equipment only after turning off power for all devices. Then, turn on the power, rst to the PSR-E323/YPT-320, then to the connected external equipment. Reverse this order when you turn the power off.
MIDI cables (sold separately) must be used for connecting to MIDI devices. They can be bought at music stores, etc.
Preset Song data cannot be transmitted from the instrument by the Song Out function.
When the instrument is connected with another MIDI device, it transmits/receives performance data.

MIDI settings
These settings should be made when transmitting/receiving performance data to a connected MIDI device or computer.
PC Mode
The PC settings instantly recongure all important MIDI settings (as shown below). The selections are PC1, PC2 and OFF.
If External Clock is ON and no clock signal is being received from an external device, the Song, Style, and metronome functions will not start.
Determines whether Song data is transmitted (ON) via MIDI or not (OFF) during Song playback. *** Determines whether Style data is transmitted (ON) via MIDI or not (OFF) during Style playback. **** Determines whether keyboard performance data of the instrument is transmitted (ON) or not (OFF).
Remote Control of MIDI Devices
You can also use this instrument as a remote control device for the Digital Music Notebook application on your computer (via the MIDI connection) controlling playback, stop and transport functions from the panel. Remote control keys PSR-E323/YPT-320: To use the remote control functions, simultaneously hold down the lowest two keys on the keyboard (C1 and C#1) and press the appropriate key (shown below).
Transferring data between the PSRE323/YPT-320 and a computer
The PSR-E323/YPT-320 includes 102 preset Songs and 106 Styles, but you can load other Songs and Styles from your computer and use them in the same way as the preset Songs and Styles as long as the loaded Song is SMF format 0* or the loaded Style is SFF (Style File Format). Loaded Song data will be stored to Song numbers beginning with 108 and one of the loaded style/s can be registered as the 107th style. In order to perform the operations described in this section you will need to use a computer connected to the Internet to download the free Musicsoft Downloader application.
* The SMF (Standard MIDI File) format is one of the most common and widely compatible sequence formats used for storing sequence data. Most commercially available MIDI sequence data is provided in SMF Format 0.
