Snowmobiling 2010
In Grand Teton National Park, snowmobiling is allowed only on the frozen surface of General Information Jackson Lake to Best Available Technology (BAT) snowmobiles to provide access for ice fishing. (see reverse side for a list of approved snowmobile models) Any snowmobile that has been certified to meet Yellowstone BAT standards and is less than 10 years old with odometer mileage under 6000 is allowed in Grand Teton. In the John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Memorial Parkway the Grassy Lake Road is open to snowmobiles with no BAT requirements. There is no guided requirement on either Jackson Lake or the Grassy Lake Road. Grooming and travel on the Continental Divide Snowmobile Trail between Moran Junction and Flagg Ranch is discontinued. In Yellowstone National Park, snowmobilers must be part of a commercially guided snowmobile tour. Commerical guide services operate out of Jackson, WY and other Yellowstone gateway communities. Entrance fees are $20 for each snowmobile; or $12 for each visitor 16 and older entering by foot, ski, snowshoe, etc. This fee includes a 7-day entrance permit for both Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks. All snowmobiles in Yellowstone must meet 2010 Best Available Technology standards.

Regulations

A person operating a snowmobile must possess a valid motor vehicle operators license. No temporary or learners permits. Snowmobiles must be properly registered and display a valid registration from the United States or Canada. All snowmobiles must have a working headlight and a red taillight. Hydrocarbons: certified by EPA to a Family Emissions Limit (FEL) of 15 g/kW-hr or less. Carbon Monoxide: certified by EPA to a Family Emissions Limit (FEL) of 120 g/kW-hr or less. Air emission figures for carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons presented are either the Official Test Results (OTR) or the certified FEL. The Official Test Results are actual measured emissions. The FELs are not-to-exceed levels as certified by EPA. Society of Automotive Engineers testing procedures allow for a 2 dB tolerance over the sound level limit to provide for variations in test site, temperature gradients, wind velocity gradients, test equipment, and inherent differences in nominally identical vehicles. (It has been observed that under some test site conditions, variability in test results greater than 2 dB can be experienced.) Sound emission figures represent an average of Official Test Results. Yellowstone BAT certification for all 2004 year model snowmobiles will expire at the end of the 2009-2010 winter. Once approved, a snowmobile would generally be certified in Yellowstone as BAT for a period of six years. On Jackson Lake in Grand Teton, a snowmobile would be certified as BAT for six years or 6,000 miles, whichever is greater, not to exceed 10 years regardless of mileage (see below list for snowmobiles continue to be authorized for use on Jackson Lake). The 2004 Bombardier Ski-Doo Elite SE and the 2004-2005 Legend Sport GT V1000 must be equipped with BAT upgrade kits in order to meet BAT requirements. The upgrade kits lowers emissions levels by controlling the maximum throttle body opening and uses different software for the snowmobiles electronic control unit.
