Excellent sound and controls
The Silent Guitar utilizes a B-Band pickup system fitted beneath the instruments bridge. This high performance system delivers rich, full-bodied classic guitar tone and excellent response. Bass and treble tone controls mounted on the body for easy access give you total control over the guitars tone. Also, being a solid body instrument that uses no microphone, the Silent Guitar eliminates the worry of feedback when performing live with a sound system.
Silent design makes it perfect for home use or practice
Compared to a normal classic guitar the Silent Guitar acoustically produces only 1/100th the amount of sound energy and 1/10th the amount of sound volume (tested in-house). Such excellent silent characteristics make it great for playing anytime or anywhere.
Built-in DSP effect adds the richness of reverb
The Silent Guitar is equipped with a built-in DSP effects processor thats designed by Yamaha. This circuit offers two types of reverb that, when activated, envelopes the warm tone of the Silent Guitar with rich reverb that will give you and your System Application listeners the realistic impression that you are performing on the stage of a concert hall. Your Silent Guitar will give you years of reliable service if you follow the simple rules given below: I Location
Do not expose it to the following conditions to avoid deformation, discoloration, or more serious damage. Direct sunlight (e.g. near a window). High temperatures (e.g. near a heat source, outside, or in a car during the daytime). Excessive humidity. Excessive dust. Strong vibrations.

I Power Supply

Turn the power switch OFF when not in use. If you use an AC power adaptor, unplug the adaptor from the AC outlet if not to be used for an extended period of time. If you use an AC power adaptor, make sure that the AC outlet you are using is easily accessible. If some trouble or malfunction occurs, immediately turn off the power switch and unplug the adaptor from the outlet. This product is not disconnected from the AC power source as long as the adaptor is connected to the outlet, even if the power switch is turned off. Unplug the AC power adaptor during electric storms. Avoid plugging the AC power adaptor into the same AC outlet as appliances with high power consumption, such as electric heaters or ovens. Also avoid using multi-plug adaptors since these can result in reduced sound quality and possible damage.
I Turn Power OFF When Making Connections
To avoid damage to the Silent Guitar and other devices to which it is connected (a sound system, for example), turn the power switches of all related devices OFF prior to connecting or disconnecting audio cables.

I Handling and Transport

Never apply excessive force to the controls, connectors or other parts. Always unplug cables by gripping the plug firmly, not by pulling on the cable. Disconnect all cables before moving the unit. Physical shocks caused by dropping, bumping, or placing heavy objects on the unit can result in scratches and more serious damage.

I Cleaning

Clean the guitar body with a dry soft cloth. A slightly damp cloth may be used to remove stubborn grime and dirt. Never use cleaners such as alcohol or thinner.
I Electrical Interference
This unit contains electric circuitry and may cause interference if placed too close to radio or television receivers. If this occurs, move it further away from the affected equipment. YAMAHA is not responsible for damage caused by improper handling or operation.

Attaching the Frame
When shipped from the factory, the left frame is not attached to the Silent Guitars main body. Before using the instrument, please properly attach the left frame using the procedure described below.
Fully loosen [frame attachment screw 1] located in the area behind the 12th fret, and [frame attachment screw 2] located at the end of the Silent Guitars main body. Insert the lower rod of the left frame fully into the bracket hole on the Silent Guitars main body. Next, insert the upper rod fully into the bracket hole.
Make sure that the upper and lower ends of the left frame are not reversed. Do not place any excess force on the frames rods. The rods may become damaged.

q First, insert the lower rod into the main body. w Then, insert the upper rod.
After confirming that both rods of the left frame are fully inserted, turn the attachment screws clockwise and secure the left frame to the Silent Guitars main body.
When moving any movable parts, make sure that your fingers or hand do not become pinched in the parts. Do not tighten the attachment screws when the frame is removed. It will result in the damage of parts, which will cause problems when re-attaching the frame.

Attachment of the frame is now complete. To remove the frame, simply reverse the order of the procedure described above, removing the upper rod from tha main body before removing the lower rod.
After the frame is attached, make sure attachment screws 1 and 2 are tightened firmly. Using the instrument with the screws loose will result in rattle or other noise during performance. When transporting the instrument, please carry the instrument by its neck or main body. Holding the instrument by only its left or right frame will result in damage of the frame or the frames fixed parts.

I About the Strap Pin

The frame attachment screw can be used as a strap pin for a separately purchased guitar strap.
Make sure that the strap is firmly hooked onto the strap pin so the instrument does not drop during performance.

Tuning

Use a tuning meter, pitch pipe, tuning fork, piano, etc., and tune the open strings to the pitches shown below.
If the strings pitch is high, loosen the string until the strings pitch is slightly lower than the tuning pitch, then tune while raising the strings pitch.

Play the standard pitch lah (A3: 440Hz) on a tuning fork, etc., and tune the open 5th string to the same pitch. Changing Strings
As the strings get old, sound quality will gradually decrease, and it will become difficult to tune the instrument. Change the strings as soon as you think they are getting old. Make sure you purchase a set of nylon guitar strings. The Silent Guitar uses a string length of 650mm (25-9/16 inch).
The end of the strings are sharp and can cut fingers. Use caution when changing strings. When changing or adjusting strings, do not put your face close to the instrument. The string may suddenly break resulting in eye or other unexpected injuries.
Thread the string through the corresponding string hole on the bridge, then tie the string as shown in the illustration below. After tying the knot, pull both ends of the string to make the knot firm on the bridge.

Next, tie the strings to the pegs. Hold the guitar so the head is facing you and wind the strings onto the pegs as shown in the illustration below.

After all six strings are strung, go on to the Tuning (page 8) procedure and tune the guitar properly.

Power Supply

The Silent Guitar operates either on battery power or with an AC adaptor however, it will consume more power when the reverb function is in use. For that reason, we recommend that it be powered with the supplied AC power adaptor for normal use. Always turn the PHONES ON/OFF switch OFF before making AC power connections or replacing the battery. I Supplying AC Power
Plug the adaptors DC output cable into the Silent Guitars DC IN jack, making sure the plug is firmly inserted into the jack. Plug the AC adaptor into a convenient wall AC power socket.
Battery power is automatically disconnected when the AC adaptor is connected. When the AC adaptor is used, the batteries may leak. To prevent leakage we recommend that you remove the batteries from the instrument. When the AC adapter is used. When using an AC adaptor, make sure you use only one of the following recommended adaptors (Recommended Adaptors: PA-D09, PA-1E, PA-3C). The use of any other adaptor may result in damage to the instrument or cause fire, etc. Please use with caution.

I Installing the Battery

Be sure to use a 9-volt alkaline battery 6LR61. (not supplied)
When using a battery, please use an alkaline battery. Use of a manganese battery will result in an extremely shorter battery life depending upon the type of battery used.

Remove the battery compartment cover, located on the back side of the Silent Guitar, by sliding the tab labeled OPEN toward the head of the guitar. Attach the 9-volt battery 6LR61 to the battery snap, and place it in the battery case. Take careful note of the polarity markings (+/-) as shown in the illustration when connecting the battery. (Reversed polarity may damage the circuit.)

4. Close the battery compartment cover.
When battery power becomes low, the reverb will no longer operate, the lamp will not light and noise will be present. Replace the battery with a new alkaline battery as soon as possible. Always follow the +/ signs when inserting the battery. Improper insertion may result in fire. To prevent possible damage to the unit due to battery leakage and unnecessary power drain, remove the battery from the unit when it is not going to be used for an extended period of time.

Using the Controls

I Using the LINE OUT jack (Using with a guitar amplifier or powered speaker, etc.)
Use a standard phone plug cable to connect the Silent Guitars LINE OUT jack to the input jack on the guitar amplifier or powered speaker, etc. When the cables plug is inserted into the LINE OUT jack, power will be supplied to the Silent Guitar and the power lamp will light.
Before making any connections, make sure that the output volume on the guitar amplifier or powered speaker, etc., is turned down or its power is switched OFF. When the guitar is not being used, disconnect the cables plug to save battery.
Rotate the VOLUME knob while playing, and adjust the volume to a suitable level.
If the sound is distorted when playing vigorously, turn the VOLUME knob slightly to the left.
Rotate the BASS and TREBLE control knobs to adjust the sound quality. Rotate the BASS knob to the right to increase the low frequencies, and to the left to decrease the low frequencies. Rotate the TREBLE knob to the right to increase the high frequencies, and to the left to decrease the high frequencies. The REVERB function can be used for adding reverb to the guitars tone to produce the live acoustic characteristics experienced in a room or hall. Set the REVERB switch to its 1 position to add the type of reverb usually experienced in a room, or set the switch to its 2 position to add the type of reverb normally experienced in a hall.
When compared to the REVERB switchs REVERB 1 or REVERB 2 positions, the instrument consumes less power when the REVERB switch is in its OFF position. Some noise is produced when the position of the REVERB switch is changed. When the power is ON, the lamp lights.

I Using the stereo earphones (or stereo output to an external device)
When using the instrument with the supplied stereo earphones or a separately purchased pair of headphones, or when you want to send the instruments stereo output to an external device, use the headphones (PHONES) jack for connecting the earphones or external device.

Set the headphones ON/OFF switch, located on the right side of the control panel, to its ON position to supply power to the Silent Guitar. The power lamp will light. Insert the earphone plug into the headphone jack. When connecting the instrument to an external device, connect the external device to the PHONES jack using a cable with a stereo plug. The remaining procedures are the same as described above in the Using the LINE OUT jack sections steps 2 through 4.
When using a pair of headphones, do not operate at high volume levels for long periods of time. Doing so can lead to irreparable damage to your hearing. Do not disconnect or connect the plug when the headphones are placed over your ears.

When connecting the instrument to external audio equipment, check the jack size and make sure to use a plug size that corresponds to the jack being used, and properly connect the cable to the jack.

I AUX IN jack

The AUX IN jack can be used to connect an external stereo signal source to the Silent Guitar. Connecting the audio output of a CD player, cassette player, etc. to the instrument allows you to play along with the external audio source. The AUX IN jacks signal level can be controlled with the AUX IN level control.
I Output Jacks (LINE OUT Jack/Headphone Jack)
The LINE OUT jack can be connected to an external input jack on a device such as a guitar amplifier, powered speaker, mixing console, etc., using a separately purchased standard stereo (monaural) phone cable. This allows monitoring or recording of the Silent Guitars sound via an external device. Connecting the LINE OUT jack to the INPUT jack on an electronic tuner, allows tuning of the instrument in the same manner as other electronic instruments. When using the supplied stereo earphones, insert the earphone plug into the headphones jack (PHONES) and turn the headphone ON/OFF switch to its ON position. The LINE OUT jack is a monaural type jack while the headphones jack is stereo.

Before connecting the Silent Guitar to any external devices, make sure that the power of all related devices is turned OFF. Set the volume level of any external audio sources to the minimum level before connecting anything. High volume settings could cause damage to the equipment and your hearing. Be careful not to step on the cord. The cord may break, equipment may be damaged, and this may cause a substantial shock to your ears. The signal from the Silent Guitars output jacks must NEVER be returned to the AUX IN jack, either directly or through external equipment. Doing so will result in feedback which may cause damage to the internal electronics.

Using the Soft Case

When putting the Silent Guitar into the supplied soft case, remove the left frame from the Silent Guitar, and then place in the individual parts in the case as shown in the illustration below.
Put the left frame into the cases larger pocket. Put the power adaptor into the smaller pocket in the case and secure the cover using the Velcro tape. When laying the case down with the instrument packed inside, make sure that the case is placed with the guitars bridge side facing up.

Placing the instrument in the soft case does not guarantee against any damages to individual parts.
The soft case is designed for storing and transporting the instrument, and protecting it from dust, etc. Do not position the instrument with its bridge side facing down in the case, and do not cause any damage to the instrument by placing any objects on top of the case, hitting it, etc.
