Why Attend the Michigan Music Conference?
Look Forward To Practice!
You spend so much time practicing, you really should enjoy it. Thats why Yamaha created the SV-150 Silent Practice Plus violin. It feels, plays and sounds like an acoustic violin but its got some major advantages. The SV-150 comes with a music player/controller that can hold gigabytes of your favorite songs and performance pieces. Play along with them and listenin privacythrough headphones. You can slow down any song to learn it, or speed it up for a challenge. The SV-150s violin tone is rich and natural. Use the 24 included digital effects to sweeten it up and create any sound you want. Last but not least, the SV-150 packs a tuner and metronome in the controller; its everything you need in one package. Visit yamahastrings.com to learn more about the SV-150 and to find a dealer near you. Practice will never be dull again.
Save your favorite MP3, WAV, AAC and MIDI files on an SD disk, put it in the controller, then play along.
Adjust the tempo of songs by up to 25% without affecting pitch to practice at your own speed.

Summer 2010 Presidents Message
Larry Dittmar
To the membership of MASTA: I assume the presidency of this fine organization with considerable awe, a tad of trepidation and enormous respect for its tremendous stature in the field of string education. It is indeed very special to follow in the foot steps of our past presidents, each of whom contributed something significant to MASTAs stature. I am greatly honored to begin this task you have set me upon. First, a very big THANKS to Mark Kotchenruther for his very capable leadership these past two years. He has provided a thoughtful vision for our organization and guided us with great skill and wisdom. A tribute to his excellent leadership became focused as MASTA was honored royally at the National Conference in California. We welcome Dr. Diane Winder as President-elect; Linda Trotter as Secretary; Lynn Brosnan as Treasurer and Gabriel Villasurda as Member-at-large. They all bring special skills, experience and great energy to their elected positions and I look forward to working with them and the entire Executive Board. MASTA administers and sponsors many excellent programs that it is most important we maintain. Highlighting just two: 1. Dan Scott and his fine staff for our Summer String Camps; 2. Rick Dapprich for his award winning work as MASTA Notes Editor and Website Master. These are but two of our very creative/inventive board members who keep setting the bar higher and higher. Congratulations to all! A special saluteto our own Bob Phillips recently elected President-elect of ASTA. We also wish a Happy Retirement to Bob Culver, distinguished string educator at the U of M and long-time ASTA leader. Two of our excellent orchestra directors led their ensembles in concerts at Carnegie Hall this past June. Congrats to David Reed of Andover High School and Steven Reed of St. Joseph High School. Thats quite a way to retire Steve! During the latter part of my teaching career and now into retirement, I have been privileged to mentor many fine young teachers. My plans for the start of this presidency include continuing that mentoring, working toward solutions to school program loss, providing more activity/events for our studio teachers, especially at the Michigan Music Conference, improving our financial base and maintaining our many great programs and activities. W. Clement Stone, Interlochens former Board Chairman wrote a book about P.M.A. (Positive Mental Attitude) which he used quite successfully in his multi-million dollar business. We all could use this in our daily approach to whatever our work schedule happens to be. The year will be busy and we all have much we can do. A great friend and colleague Gerald Bartlett used to share this message when he talked about his favorite topic and his widow Helen sent a copy to me after his passing. Perhaps it will be a help to you. This is why I teach Music Not because I expect you to major in music. Not because I expect you to play or sing all your life. Not so you can relax or have fun. But - so you will be human so you will recognize beauty so you will be closer to God so you will have something to cling to so you will have more love, more compassion, more gentleness, more good . In short, more life. Of what value will it be to make a living unless you know how to live? Best wishes for a wonderful year! Larry Dittmar

Michigan Youth Arts, sponsor of the annual Michigan Youth Arts Festival, recognizes, supports and celebrates the artistic excellence of young artists in Michigan. As a statewide arts education association, Michigan Youth Arts serves as a collaborative of discipline-specific arts education organizations. Programming consists of the Michigan Youth Arts Festival, statewide arts education awards, advocacy, leadership roundtables, and funding programs for youth, schools and arts education professionals throughout Michigan. Learn more about or donate to MASTAs vigorous partner organization at www.michiganyoutharts.org. 48th Michigan Youth Arts Festival The Michigan Youth Arts Festival is a comprehensive arts spectacular, culminating a nine-month search for the finest artistic talent in Michigan high schools. More than 250,000 students, grades 9-12, from across the state are involved in the adjudication process that results in nearly 1,000 being invited to participate in the 48th annual three-day event, held this year May 13-15, 2010 on the campus of Western Michigan University. These exceptional students in the arts gathered to explore, celebrate and showcase their talent in multiple disciplines through showcases, concerts and workshops in any of the represented disciplines: Creative Writing, Dance, Film, Vocal music, Instrumental Music, visual art and theatre. The Festival was founded in 1963 as a talent screening of young musicians organized by Dr. Joseph E. Maddy, founder of the Interlochen Center for the Arts. The Nocturne Quartet, this years MASTA Honors String Quartet from St. Joseph High School, coached by Steve Reed, includes Brian Van Antwerp, violin, Paul Villa, violin, Tim Pow, viola, and Elan Gleiber, cello. All are members of the St. Joseph High School Chamber and Symphony Orchestras, as well as the Lake Michigan Youth Orchestra. The quartet formed Summer 2009, knowing they would only have a year together (Brian, Tim and Paul start college this September). In Fall 2009 the Nocturne was accepted into the Fischoff National Chamber Music Association Mentoring Project, thereby receiving coaching from Patty Kates of the Grand Rapids Symphony. They also had the opportunity to perform in a master class by Samuel Rhodes of the Julliard Quartet. The Nocturne also performed in June with their high school orchestra in Carnegie Hall.
The Nocturne Quartet
On Saturday of the Festival, the Nocturne presented their largest of 5 performances featuring Presto from Divertimento No. 1 in D Major, K. 136 by Mozart and String Quartet No. 8 in C Minor, Op. 110 by Shostakovich. Note that sophomore cellist Gleiber arranged several of the tunes heard during the Michigan Youth Arts Festival Teacher of the Year dinner. In addition, he is already planning membership of the Nocturne Quartet II! ArtServe Announces New Arts Education Toolkit An Important Advocacy Resource ArtServe is pleased to announce the release of its Arts Education Toolkit and Arts, Culture and Arts Education Resource Guide. Made possible by a grant from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the Kennedy Center National Partnerships Program, the toolkit was developed following months of planning, research and, most importantly, discussions with teachers and advocates from around the state, to determine what would serve as the best resource to inform, equip, engage and inspire arts education advocates to action. ArtServe Michigans Arts Education Toolkit is a resource to help you effectively take action on arts education issues at the national, state and, most importantly, local level. It contains information, guidance and resources applicable to the dynamics in Michigan, combined with information provided in the model Arts Education Advocacy Toolkit developed by the Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts Education Network in 2009. We hope that this resource will be helpful to you in gaining the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to work with others to urge awareness and support for arts education in Michigan schools. The Arts, Culture and Arts Education Resource Guide was developed to accompany the ArtServe Michigan Arts Education Toolkit. It serves as a handheld guide to arts education advocacy in Michigan. While ArtServe will be strategically mailing this to each of Michigans 549 school districts, 16 statewide arts education associations, and other stakeholders, it is important to spread the word toarts education advocates throughout the state. The toolkit and resource guide are available for download from http://www.artservemichigan.org/?q=node/26. If you would like hard copies of the materials that include additional arts education resources, please contact Mike Latvis at mike@artservemichigan.org or 248-379-5897. While ArtServe will attempt to mail as many copies as possible at no charge, there may be a small fee for shipping depending on quantities requested. Want to know more, or how to become involved? Another Great Year!!
Campre - always fun! Session II Campers Some MSU pride displayed at camp!
It was another fantastic year of fun, music-making, and Smores at the 2010 MASTA String Camps. Over 350 Students and staff from throughout the state (and 1 from Virginia this year) attended 3 sessions over 2 and a half weeks. The musical excellence and fabulous character of these students continues to inspire both campers and staff alike. The traditional 3-day camp, Session I, continues to be a wonderful 1st time experience for our younger students. Becky Bush and Carol Johnson directed our 2 orchestras in fabulous performances after just 3 days of rehearsals and sectionals.
Session II was a new 5-day long experience this year. This new format was a welcome addition to the MASTA Camp offerings as the camp had over 100 participants and impressed the staff with the high degree of musical achievement these students displayed throughout the session. Erin Hansen joined Becky Bush as music director for Fridays concert which included traditional orchestra tunes, rote tunes, and a rhythm and music theory demonstration. This new 5-day offering is certain to continue and add to MASTAs fabulous camp offerings.
Session III, formerly known as the Junior High String Camp, continues to be a highlight of many teenagers summers. Tony Krempa lead the two orchestras in moving and challenging performances at Saturdays concerts that left many parents shocked by what their children could do in 7 short days. The 30+ year tradition that began with Elizabeth Green continues to be a model for camp experiences throughout the country. Actually, several campers ask for a High School offering, and for this camp to be longer. Its great to have kids asking for more time with their instruments!

M A S T A CAMP STAFF - LIKE NO OTH E R !
For many years, the thing that has amazed me most about the MASTA String camps is the incredible group of people who come together to create this experience for our students. Year in and year out dozens of current and future teaching superstars call themselves staff members of the MASTA Camps. This year was no different.
Many of these people are now into doubledigit years of involvement with the camps with no end in sight of ending their tenures. Those of us who have worked in camps before know that they dont do it for the money. One told me this year that her and her husband were discussing camp and how it was a nancial issue for them to nd a sitter and be away from home for the week - her answer - I have to teach at MASTA for myself. My time at camp renews my teaching spirit. If you know any of the people listed to the right, please tell them thank you!

An Introduction to Suzuki Education Suzuki Association of the Americas
Led by SAA Teacher Trainer Geri Arnold January 20, 2011, 9am 4pm, Amway Grand Plaza Hotel, Grand Rapids Hosted by MASTA and the Michigan Music Conference
Every Child Can (ECC) is a six-hour introduction to Dr. Suzukis philosophy and its application to Suzuki education as created and implemented by the Suzuki Association of the Americas (SAA). Are you a skilled, well-trained musician who would like to teach your instrument and work with young children? Do you have a genuine affection for children and an interest in helping them develop as human beings through the study of music? Are you interested in working in a cooperative atmosphere with children, parents and colleagues? If so, you may be interested in investigating the Suzuki approach to music education. Many musicians who use the Suzuki Method have found that it provides a unique avenue for helping children and families as well as providing opportunities for their own growth as musicians, teachers, parents, and human beings. This six hour course is for parents, teachers, prospective teachers, and other interested people, and it provides an inspiring, in-depth look at the Suzuki approach to teaching and learning. For prospective teachers, ECC is the required rst course in the SAA teacher developmental program. Parents interested in Suzuki Method learn that this is more than a way of introducing music to their children; it is a pathway to understanding their children and helping them to become happy and responsible individuals. Musicians and teachers can discover effective ways to direct their teaching and nd a sense of personal fulllment as a result of embracing the Suzuki approach in bringing music to the lives of families and children. In addition to exploring the elements of the Suzuki approach and its far-reaching goals, it includes an introduction to learning styles, history of the development of Suzuki education, the role of parents, the importance of Suzuki pedagogical training and an overview of the SAAs role in supporting teachers and parents. Class size is limited to 30 participants. Tuition includes your registration costs for the MMC Conference held January 21-23, 2011.To secure your Registration contact the MMC ofce: Michigan Music Conference 7044 S.13th St. Oak Creek, WI 53154 Phone 414-908-4958 www.michiganmusicconference.org l.schabowski@MichiganMusicConference.org

Presidents Message
A very warm welcome to the 20th Anniversary of the Canadian Grand Masters Fiddling Competition. We have a wonderful show lined up for you to enjoy with great fiddlers from across Canada competing for the title of Canadian Grand Master, and, as our guest artist this year, we are pleased to present Don Reed backed by South Mountain, one of Canadas top country bands. Don and South Mountain were the guest artists at the very first CGM competition held at the Centrepointe theatre in September 1990, so it is fitting that they should be back for this special anniversary. In addition, during the evening program, I am certain that you will enjoy the four Junior Showcase fiddlers we have invited to perform for you. You will notice a change in the format of the competition this year thanks to the hard work of our Steering Committee. We hope that this change will encourage the competitors from across the country to feature the many distinct styles of fiddling that exist in Canada. Our thanks again to the management of Centrepointe Theatre and the Theatre Volunteer Company for the substantial contribution they make to ensure the success of this event, and a big thank you to the Executive and Board of Directors of the Canadian Grand Masters, all of them volunteers, who have worked very hard for the past year to make todays show possible. On behalf of the CGM organization I thank you sincerely for being here today in support of the preservation of Old Time Fiddling in Canada. Sincerely, Peer Norgaard, President Canadian Grand Masters Fiddling Association

Junior Showcase Contestants
Scherene Auchterlonie
(Courtenay, British Columbia)
Scherene, 17, was given a violin for Christmas when she was almost nine and has not stopped playing since. Over the years she has been inspired by many fantastic musicians, but the musician who inspired her most was Pierre Schryer. Scherene has attended many workshops and camps with many fiddlers from all over Canada and the world such as: Pierre Schryer, Shane Cook, Mark Sullivan, Andr Brunet, Trent Freeman, Gordon Stobbe, Patti Lamoureux, Ruaridh Campbell and Pete Clark. When asked how she feels about attending the CGM as a junior showcase her answer was simple It will be an honour to be in the presence of so many great musicians, and to be able to represent my Province on stage. Im also looking forward to jamming with all the musicians in attendance it is going to be a lot of fun! Scherene would like to thank everyone who has made this trip possible with their generous contributions to her travel fund. Thank you for helping me share the music.
Cassie Anne MacDonald (Halifax, Nova Scotia)
Cassie, 17, has been playing the fiddle since she was five and step dancing ever since she can remember. She has been teaching step dance since the age of fourteen for the Halifax Regional Recreation Department and is a member of Amethyst Highland Dance Step Troupe. She studied Classical violin with Yvonne DeRoller and Celtic fiddle with Kendra MacGillivray and Glen Graham. Since 2004 she has been studying with popular fiddler, Gordon Stobbe, whom she has accompanied at the Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival in 2007. Cassie plays fiddle, mandolin and bodhran and step dances in the Celtic group Finnan Haddie. She is a volunteer performer at many fundraising and charity events throughout Nova Scotia. She is a Grade 12 International Baccalaureate student at Citadel High in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and will begin studies at University of Kings College-Halifax in September. Cassie is very grateful to the CGM for inviting her to perform.
Kieran Poile (Whitehorse, Yukon Territory)
Over the years Kieran, now 14, has become an important contributor to the music scene up north, performing with various musical groups and recording on C.B.C. His love of the violin has been nurtured by some wonderful classical teachers (including Jenny Atkinson, Christine Doknjas, and Rachel Grantham), and by his many inspiring fiddle instructors from whom he has learned a vast repertoire of fiddle songs from every style across the country. In Whitehorse, Kieran has been performing for two years with his jazz/swing band, Come Eat a Cat`. Thanks to fiddler Keitha Clark, Kieran is currently learning traditional Yukon songs to share at the Junior Showcase. Allen Benjamin, a Vuntut Gwitchin fiddler from Old Crow, is a pioneer in this style, and he is excited about the chance to share these songs with those outside the Yukon. Kieran is thrilled to be playing for the CGM Junior Showcase and hopes that everyone has a great time!!
Emily Yarascavitch (Oshawa, Ontario)
Demonstrating a musical talent at a very young age, Emily has been travelling across Ontario competing since she was six years of age. Now 15, Emily contributes much of her success over the years to the top-notch, professional instruction she has been able to receive not only from her two main fiddle teachers, Mark Sullivan and Mathew Johnson, but also to such people as Shane Cook, Brian Hebert, Louis Schryer, Webb Acheson, Jacinthe Trudeau, Patti Lamoureux and Calvin Vollrath. Emily is presently working on the completion of her Grade 8 Royal Conservatory of Music Exam in Violin under the guidance of Laurie Mitchell. Emily is a strong supporter of the four, well-established Durham Old Time Fiddle Clubs that meet regularly in the area. The guidance, encouragement, and support that the members of these clubs have given her, especially piano player, Evelyn Stinson, and fiddler, Ray Brisson, cannot go unmentioned. Emilys interest in Old Time Fiddling has given her the great opportunity to develop a wide circle of close friendships with competitors of all ages and their families right across Canada, and she is very honoured to have been selected as one of the CGM Junior Showcase Performers for 2009!

Special Guest Artists: Don Reed & South Mountain!
Champion fiddler Don Reed, backed by South Mountain, will be Guest Artist at the 2009 Championship. Don was born in Sudbury, Ontario, is a 3-time North American Champion and is the first call session player for record producers throughout North America and Europe. Don is likely to be the man with the bow in hand on any of the fiddle parts you hear in todays recorded country music. South Mountain member Steve Piticco started playing guitar at age 11. As a result of his distinctive sound and style he has toured and recorded with an endless list of the whos who in country music. In addition, the Canadian Country Music Association has recognized his talents by awarding him Guitar player of the year and Instrumentalist of the year on numerous occasions. Other members that make up South Mountain are Kurk Bernard (bass guitar and vocals) and Jay Riehl (drums and vocals). Shortly after their debut record release, South Mountain had created sufficient impact to capture the Canadian Country Music Associations coveted Vista Rising Star Award honors as top new artist of 1991. The industry buzz, coupled with the groups instant success at radio, would indicate that the win was no surprise. South Mountain has held the title of, International Band of the Year in Europe beating out The Dixie Chicks, The Mavericks & Alabama. In 2005 South Mountain won the best Live Show beating out the likes of Shania Twain! Their last Euro-Tour had them playing in front of tens of thousands of people in Lithuania, Spain, Holland, Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium & Denmark. The band has been asked back in 2009 & 2010 to headline many of the festivals. South Mountain proudly waved the Canadian flag while in Europe & Scandinavia!
