want to thank all of you who attended the March breakfast and voted for me, it was an unexpected honor to be elected your president. Im not sure I can fill Dave Cowgills EEEs, but I am certainly going to try. Under Daves leadership, we doubled our membership, our finances took a turn for the better and we scheduled more social events. Dave left a legacy that the new officers will continue to build on. But before we start, however, we must know what you expect from the club.
From the informal poll taken by Scott Wasser at the March breakfast, it appears the major reason some of you are in the club is not for the rides but for the camaraderie. Although most of us love riding, its the fellowship with other bikers that keep us in the club. Based on this survey, Next Breakfast Our next breakfast will be at Damons in New well continue to Castle at 9 AM on Saturday, April 9 and well offer events that ride afterwards, weather permitting. See offer an opportunity for our significant below for a description of the ride. others and kids to attend. A concept started on Daves watch one I wish to expand. To that end, the team at left is starting to work on rides that also give us a chance to socialize. Robert Davis (a.k.a. Davis) put together a series of five Sunday trips to regional minor league baseball teams. The games are listed on our website and the first one is in Salisbury on April 17. I cannot think of a more unique way for a bunch of bikers to have a good time with their significant other or with a child.
Davis also arranged for us to get together at the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania over the weekend of May 6-8 for some sightseeing and marshmallows around the campfire. If you havent signed up yet, be sure to contact him as quickly as you can. If you dont camp - and I dont - there are plenty of motels in the area. Jay Schmittinger has also weighed in on club activities. Hell lead a four day ride through West By God Virginia over the Memorial Day weekend, and promises to do it again - but a little differently - over the July 4th weekend. If youve never been on one of Jays West Virginia adventures, then youve missed something to talk about for many years to come. West Virginia is arguably the best state to ride this side of Colorado, and Jay seems to know every twisty road in the state. Jay and Susan will also host a pool party again this year on June 25 at their lakeside estate near Smyrna and the details will be in the next newsletter. As some of you remember, last years party was well attended by members and their families and we all became better acquainted. Seems these relaxing social events are much more conducive to meeting and greeting than our monthly breakfasts. In addition to Jays pool party, our vice president, Dan Davis is looking into the possibility of a picnic at Killens Pond State Park toward the end of August. Hell be asking for your thoughts on this second picnic as the riding season progresses. Specifically, he would like to know if you will attend and what activities would you like to see at the picnic. For those of you who just want to ride and cant be bothered socializing and trying to figure out what pinky to lift when eating petit fours, Scott Wasser has again come to the rescue with his annual Ride Contest. There will be plenty of prizes for the winners in each of the many categories. I have my eye on winning first place for Most Miles Ridden in an East-West Direction on a Tuesday. In addition, we have a prize this year for anyone who understands the rules. Finally, yet just as importantly, is our web site which is easy to understand. If you havent seen it recently, Davis did a tremendous job of constructing a site crammed with useful information and yet easy to navigate. Our old site was hacked into in February and Davis spent many, many hours rebuilding it from the ground up. The result is a professional looking site thats an excellent resource for our members and an impressive portal to our club for the rest of the world. After Breakfast Ride
fter our April 9 breakfast, Paul Reburn will lead an approximately five hour ride to the Indian Steps Museum, southeast of York, PA. The winding country roads to and from the museum snake through the farmlands of Cecil, Harford, Lancaster and York counties and will take us through areas the club does not normally ride. Our first stop will be at Susquehannock State Park to take in the overlook, which provides a sweeping vista of the entire southern Susquehanna River basin including the
Conowingo reservoir and the Peach Bottom nuclear plant. Well also stop at Muddy Run, which is located along the Susquehanna and accessed via a great twisty road. Muddy Run is located along the railroad tracks where your club president ran freight trains when he was a locomotive engineer in the early 70s. From Muddy Run, well make one more stop at the historic Lock 12 near the Holtwood Dam along the Susquehanna and Tidewater canal, and then head off to the museum. See www.fieldtrip.com/pa/77553777.htm for a description of the museum and its importance. It may be a bit too early in the year for the museum to be open, but well tour the grounds if it isnt. On the way back, well cross the Susquehanna River at the Conowingo Dam and lunch at Wesleys Restaurant in Fair Hill, MD. Well be back in the Newark area around 3:00 pm and will have covered about 130 miles. For those of you coming up from outside the Wilmington/Newark area, dont forget that well be on daylight savings time, so you wont have to rush to get back home before dark. Last Call for MARS 2005 Dues ts that time of year again when both Uncle Sam and MARS ask for your money. If you havent already done so, please send a check for $10 to our treasurer, Paul Reburn at 1121 Mayflower Drive, Newark, DE 19711. Although the ten bucks is for the entire family, many members have opted to send ten dollars apiece for the husband and for the wife, thus enabling us to list each as separate members. Your dues help us offset the cost of our mid-winter banquet, the summer pool party (details in the next newsletter), prizes, gifts, postage and lots of other small stuff that adds up quickly. So please send your check as quickly as possible and allow us to continue operating your club in the manner to which youve become accustomed. April is Harley Davidson Appreciation Month Excerpted From the Harley Davidson Web Site enators Russell Feingold (D-Wi.) and Herb Kohl (D-Wi.) recently introduced a proclamation in the U.S. Senate making April Harley Davidson Appreciation Month. It states that the vision, foresight and pioneering spirit of William S. Harley and Arthur, William and Walter Davidson made the Harley Davidson Motor Company the major force in the worldwide motorcycle industry. and made their motorcycles the envy of other bikers everywhere. The proclamation goes on to say the Harley Davidsons brand is recognized as the international gold standard in customer loyalty. Company spokesman Harlan Davies asked at a recent press conference: When was the last time you saw a biker with Triumph or BMW tattooed on his arm? Further, he said, Harleys are what America is all about.
The resolution calls for riders of all marques to give a hearty wave and a smile to Harley Davidson riders whenever and wherever they see them, and not just this month but year round. A Health Update on One of Our Members By Jennifer Ward
t the March meeting, I announced that my husband, Geoff Ward, had just been diagnosed with early onset Parkinsons disease. Geoff currently has only a few symptoms of the disease: rigidity and slowness on his right side. Luckily, we caught this early. His doctor started him on medication that should help alleviate some of his symptoms. Here is some information about Parkinsons for those of you who are not familiar with the disease. What is Parkinsons? Its a chronic, progressive disorder of the central nervous system belonging to a group of conditions called motor system disorders. Parkinson's is the direct result of the loss of cells in a section of the brain called the substantia nigra. Those cells produce dopamine, a chemical messenger responsible for transmitting signals within the brain. Loss of dopamine causes critical nerve cells in the brain, or neurons, to fire out of control, leaving patients unable to direct or control their movement in a normal manner. What are the symptoms? Symptoms of Parkinson's, which often appear gradually yet with increasing severity, may include tremors or trembling; difficulty maintaining balance and gait; rigidity or stiffness of the limbs and trunk; and general slowness of movement (also called bradykinesia). Patients may also eventually have difficulty walking, talking or completing other simple tasks. Because Parkinson's has a wide range of early symptoms that are similar to other neurological conditions, diagnosis is often difficult unless the clinician has experience in the field. The course of Parkinson's varies substantially. Some patients have relatively few troublesome symptoms for many years, while others have especially severe cases that leave them with little or no mobility in just a few years. What causes Parkinsons? It is currently impossible to predict who will get Parkinson's disease or to prevent it from occurring. In general, both men and women are affected equally and symptoms first appear, on average, when a patient is older than 50. At least one million people in the United States are estimated to have Parkinson's; many of them, perhaps half, are thought to be undiagnosed. A subset of Parkinson's called young-onset Parkinson's affects those under age 40. Although the condition is clinically the same, treatment options may differ.
The exact role of heredity in Parkinson's disease is not clear. There are relatively few families in which known genetic mutations cause the disease. There are many more where the disease somehow "runs in the family." Most cases of Parkinson's are believed to result from a combination of genetic and environmental factors. What is the status of research into a cure? Scientists' understanding of how the brain works has greatly increased in recent years, leading many observers to believe that a cure for Parkinson's and similar neurodegenerative diseases may be imminent. Others are more cautious; pointing out that even the most promising therapies will require several years of clinical trials and other studies to ensure safety and effectiveness. There is little doubt, however, that increased research (which can only be achieved through increased funding, both public and private) will hasten the discovery of a cure or therapies that can halt the diseases' progression. It is impossible to estimate when that will happen. The most controversial research avenue currently being explored is based on so-called embryonic stem cells, which are undifferentiated cells derived from days-old embryos. Most of these embryos are the product of in vitro fertilization efforts. Researchers believe that they may be able to prompt these cells, which can theoretically be manipulated into a building block of any of the body's tissues, to replace those lost during the diseases' progression. Similarly, there is hope that so-called adult stem cells, which are harvested from bone marrow, may be manipulated to work the same way. Fewer ethical questions surround this sort of research, but some scientists believe that adult stem cells may be more difficult to work with than those from embryos. Either way, the scientific community is nearly unanimous in arguing that their research efforts would be severely hampered if they were not allowed to work on all forms of stem cells. Human studies of so-called neurotrophic factors are also now under way. In animal studies, this family of proteins revived dormant brain cells, causing them to produce dopamine and prompting dramatic improvement of symptoms. Some scientists are analyzing the potential role of genetic and environmental factors in causing Parkinson's. Significant progress in discovering what causes Parkinson's disease will open an entirely new vein of intensive research into curing the condition. What can you do to help? Let It Ride By Scott Wasser hen the dice are rolling their way at the craps table, a hot gambler is apt to say, Let it ride. Since we rolled sevens and elevens in our first annual Club Ride Contest, we decided to pick up the dice and roll em again. But not without a couple of changes. While the numbers indicate that last years contest was successful in getting members to participate about half of all our members made at least one club ride feedback suggests that making the competition a little keener might inspire even more participation. At our last MARs meeting, one member said her competitive spirit waned a month or two into the contest when it became obvious a few members were going to be impossible to beat. The discussion on how to avoid a repeat of that prompted some interesting suggestions. These ranged from adding contest categories to coming up with a new mileage calculation formula that would have required resurrecting Albert Einstein from the dead to compute the results. Since old Al isnt available, the clubs ride coordinator thats yours truly evaluated all the feedback, looked at last years results, and decided to make just a few simple changes. The complete rules are listed below, but the changes boil down to these: * Maximum miles credited per ride reduced from 500 to 250 miles. We dont want to discourage the overnight trips that were popular last season, but we also dont want to prevent members who simply cant get away from having a fair shot at winning a prize in the contest. * No contest miles credited unless at least two bikes ridden by club members complete a ride. Anyone who volunteers to lead a ride will get credit for leading the ride even if nobody else shows up and the ride is cancelled. At least one other bike must complete the ride for mileage to be awarded. This prevents club members from declaring his/her daily commute to work or weekly Wednesday night visits to Aunt Millies a club ride and accruing mileage.
* A new prize category has been added: Largest Ride Led. Since the purpose of the contest is to encourage participation, it was suggested that a grand prize be given to the ride leader who gets the largest turnout for a ride. We hope this will motivate members not only to lead rides, but also to recruit members to attend. It is also the one category that can be won on the very last ride, regardless of the standings. * The contest prizes have changed. Because of the service fee charged for gift cards and the limitations involved with using them, the suggestion that we pay the winners in cold, hard, cash has been adopted. Here are the rest of the contest basics. The complete rules will be posted online and handed out at the next club meeting: Every month, our newsletter and Web site will have a calendar listing OFFICIAL club rides, including the date, time, destination, ride leader and approximate mileage for each ride. The most up-to-date calendar will be on the Web, so check with the Ride Coordinator if you dont have access. Only rides posted in one of those calendars count toward the contest. To be posted as an official ride, leaders must submit their proposed ride verbally or in writing to the newsletter editor and Web master or calling or copying the ride coordinator. The contest begins with the April 9 club meeting and ends November 15, 2005. All you have to do to enter the competition is show up for a ride, sign in with the ride leader, and then initial next to your signature at the end of the ride. Ride leaders have the option of signing out participants who complete a ride if they determine it is more convenient than getting a signature. Everyone completing a ride will be credited with the official mileage as determined by the ride leaders odometer. You dont have to fill out anything else or tell anyone you want to join the contest. You dont have to keep track of your own mileage. Simply go on a club ride and you are automatically entered into the contest. Your mileage for that ride and every other club ride in which you participate will be counted and kept by the Ride Coordinator. Contest leaders will be listed each month in the newsletter along with the calendar of upcoming Official Club Rides. One of the coolest things about this contest is that the competition is divided into six different categories, giving you a chance to win one of nine prizes. The categories are: Most Club Miles Ridden Most Club Rides Attended Most Club Rides Led Most Club Miles as a Passenger Most Club Rides as a Passenger Largest Ride Led
First- and second-place prizes will be awarded in the first three categories. Only firstplace prizes will be awarded in the Passenger and Largest Ride categories. All prizes will be in cash, but the prize amount may vary by category and place. In order to qualify as an official club ride, a leader must provide the following information for the calendar:
Ride date Starting time Starting location Ending location (one-way or roundtrip) General destination or route Approximate mileage Contact information (e-mail or phone number) for the leader
A catchy ride title (such as Toms Tumultuous Trip) and brief description of the ride (A fast-paced ride on some winding back roads in southeastern Pennsylvania) are encouraged. Leaders also are encouraged to post rides at least seven days in advance. Suggested rides may not be accepted for purposes of this contest if the Ride Coordinator determines that the ride was not scheduled far enough in advance, or the destination is inappropriate. Such decisions will be at the sole discretion of the Ride Coordinator, who is ineligible for the contest. In addition to picking a ride route and leading the group, ride leaders also will be responsible for determining the official mileage of a ride, obtaining the signatures and initials of ride participants, and submitting the Official Ride Forms to the Ride Coordinator. Blank ride forms will be available on our web site and at club meetings. Completed forms should be mailed within a week of the ride to: Scott Wasser 104 E. Minglewood Dr. Middletown, DE 19709 If a COMPLETED ride sheet is not received within 10 days of a ride, the leader may not get credit for the ride and/or the mileage may not be awarded at the Ride Coordinators discretion. Thats it for the basics. Please be sure to check the complete rules when they are posted online or distributed at the meeting. They will cover mind-numbing topics (and you thought what you read so far was tough to digest) such as tiebreakers. Bear in mind that even after distribution, the rules and regulations of this competition are subject to change at the Ride Coordinators discretion to maintain the spirit and intent of the contest. Thats called the protect youre butt clause, and the Ride Coordinator will consult with the Executive Committee before making changes or decisions affecting the contest.
(While on the subject of ride competitions, congratulations to Dean Smith for topping all the Delaware members in the recently completed BMWMOA ride contest. Dean rode 12,691 miles on his 02 R1150RT during the six months of the contest, coming in far ahead of the second place finisher. Way to go Dean! Ed.) Retiree Rides By Dan Davis everal of us who are no longer employed would like to begin having rides during the week. These would not be part of the MARS Ride Contest and would be held whenever at least two of us are available to ride. The planning for these jaunts would be informal, low-key, and probably at the last minute. There will be no need for a ride leader since we only seem to know where we're going when we get there. So far, our small group includes Ed Lombardi, Paul Reburn and me, but we'd be happy to include others. You don't even need to be retired to join us - call in sick, take a vacation day, or just forget to go to work. Many Motorheads (Mostly MARS Members) Make Maiden Mid-March Motorcycle Maintenance Madness Memorable
n Saturday, March 19, Robert Davis hosted MARS first annual Maintenance Day, and it was a runaway success. Almost one dozen bikers showed up at Davis house in Newark, clogging both his driveway and the street. Members came in from Felton, Lewes, the Trenton area and West Chester. Most were interested in oil changes, but valves were also adjusted and some learned what was under all that plastic on their bikes. Several members came just out of curiosity to see what others were doing and maybe to learn a little bit more about their scooters.
Davis and Cynthia were the perfect hosts. In addition to providing motor oil, tools and miscellaneous hardware, they put out sandwiches, chips, brownies, coffee and home brewed beer for the group. Many of us met members we havent seen in a while and, as is normal when a group of bikers get together, we discussed the pros and cons of various BMWs, ABS and the price of new bikes. It was also a great opportunity to discuss future rides.
The most important event of the day, however, was fixing the kickstand on a little neighbor girls bicycle. She saw us working on two-wheeled vehicles and took the opportunity to have hers worked on! Escape from Behind the Helmet Marjorie Postell enjoy the feel of the warm sun, the smells of spring, a warm breeze and the freedom one experiences while riding a motorcycle. I have always ridden on the back of the motorcycle and enjoyed the ride as passenger. Recently, however, I had been wondering what it would be like to be riding up front, controlling the motorcycle. With the support of my husband, Tom, I attended and passed the three-day Novice Rider Course offered last October by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation. I then had acquired the knowledge, safety skills, and license needed to operate a motorcycle, but had no bike. My husband was now on a mission: he had to find a safe, small, and easy to handle bike. It took several months, but now I am the proud owner of a 2003 Yamaha Virago XV250 V-Twin with only 300 miles; its perfect for me to learn the finer details of riding, and my husband is a fantastic mentor! He is showing me different pavement surfaces, curves and the feeling of going over 25 miles per hour. In the safety course, we learned skills in a parking lot, so experience with handling at speed was not something I gained! I have logged 50 miles on it so far, including two short after-work rides and a commute to the office, but I am looking forward to putting many more miles on MY bike as warmer weather arrives. For all of those passengers who are toying with the idea of getting out from behind the HelmetJUST DO IT! As someone more profound than I once said, If you aint the lead dog, the scenery never changes! Get out there and change the view; enjoy new scenery firsthand, up front! Challenge the road and yourself!

ISO-BOARDS FOR DRIVER OR PASSENGER
Finely chromed ISO-Boards, with cushy, full-length ISO rubber inserts for great looks and unbeatable comfort Include a cast bracket to connect the ISO-Board to the slip-resistant splined adapter Require adapters to complete installation (sold separately, see below) Bike-specific adapters are for use with OEM peg mounts, Kryakyn splined adapter mounts PART NO. 49-4441 are for use with previously installed Kryakyn female footpeg mounts Dimensions: 9 x 4 1/2 Sold in pairs NOTE: Placing these footboards on mounts intended for footpegs may prohibit them from folding up in the same manner as the stock peg. While the board may be rotated on the mount for a comfortable foot position, some angles may cause the board to contact other components on the bike before the board is folded up completely. Also, if the board is positioned so it will fold up as stock, the trailing end of the board may be in a position that could limit cornering clearance. Before ordering, be aware of components on the bike that may interfere with the placement of the footboards.
