|This subwoofer sounds amazing hooked up to our home theater system. The subwoofer was purchased specifically to fit inside a cabinet. Great sound. Great sound. Not much to adjust. Has off & on switch and a volume knob. Sounds good with Denon Home Theater System.|

Slim Design The YST-FSW100 has a slim, elegant design that will perfectly match thinline home theater components and plasma monitors or flat-screen TVs. Advanced YST II for Awesome Deep Bass Yamaha's newly developed Advanced YST II (Yamaha Active Servo Technology II) combines negative-impedance and constantcurrent principles to drive the speaker cone with even tighter control than previously. Using Advanced Negative Impedance Converter (ANIC) circuits, this system dynamically optimizes effective speaker impedance to maintain excellent linearity. This means more stable and accurate low range response, not to mention higher sound pressure levels, for more natural and energetic bass reproduction.
New Half Pipe Port The subwoofer also employs a new design feature called the Half Pipe Port, which further smoothes bass response and minimizes extraneous noise. Large (16cm; 6.5) Driver with Magnetic Shielding The powerful, multi-range driver is exceptionally large (16cm; 6.5) for this class of subwoofer. Magnetic shielding means there is no distortion-causing interference when the speaker is placed near a TV or other monitor. Environmentally Friendly Internal parts and circuit boards do not contain lead, which is often used in other subwoofer brands, and is harmful to the environment.
Effect of New Half Pipe Port
Advanced YST produces rich bass sound, and the addition of a Linear Port reduces extraneous noise for even higher quality.
A semicircular Half Pipe Port provides the benefits of full 180 dispersion when placed against a wall, compact design and minimal extraneous noise for high sound quality.
Advanced YST Concept
The effectiveness of Advanced YST (Yamaha Active Servo Technology) is based upon two principles: the Helmholtz Resonator and negativeimpedance drive. Active Servo Processing speakers reproduce the bass frequencies through an air woofer, which is a port or opening in the speaker cabinet. This port is used instead of, and performs the functions of, a conventional woofer. Low amplitude signals inside the cabinet can, due to the Helmholtz Resonance principle, be output from this port as high amplitude waves if the design is such that the size of the port and the volume of the cabinet are in a certain proportion. In addition, the wave amplitudes inside the cabinet must be precise and of sufficient power, in order to overcome the load presented by the air within the cabinet. This is accomplished by employing an amplifier that is capable of supplying special signals. If the electrical resistance of the voice coil could be reduced to zero, the movement of the speaker unit would become linear with respect to signal voltage. To achieve this, a special negative-impedance output drive amplifier is used, so the impedances cancel out and become zero. By employing negative-impedance drive circuits, the amplifier is able to generate precise, low-amplitude low frequency waves with superior damping characteristics. These waves are then radiated from the cabinet opening as high amplitude signals. This amplifier/speaker combination is capable of reproducing an extremely wide range of frequencies with excellent sound quality and low distortion. The Advanced YST takes this concept a stop further by adopting Advanced Negative Impedance Converter (ANIC) circuits. These circuits allow the converter to dynamically vary in order to select the optimum values for speaker impedance variation. With these new circuits, Advanced Yamaha Active Servo Technology provides more stable performance and higher sound pressure levels than the former system, resulting in more natural and energetic bass reproduction.

Do not attempt to clean this unit with chemical solvents as this might damage the finish. Use a clean, dry cloth. Be sure to read the TROUBLESHOOTING section regarding common operating errors before concluding that the unit is faulty. Install this unit near the wall outlet and where the AC power plug can be reached easily. Secure placement or installation is the owners responsibility. This subwoofer system employs Advanced Yamaha Active Servo Technology II which Yamaha has developed for reproducting higher quality super-bass sound. (Refer to page 6 for details on Advanced Yamaha Active Servo Technology II) This super bass sound adds a more realistic, theater-in-the-home effect to your stereo system. The slim design matches the interior of your home.

Positioning the subwoofer
It is recommended to place the subwoofer on the outside of either the right or the left front speaker. (See g. A.) The placement shown in g. B is also possible, however, if the subwoofer system is placed directly facing the wall, the bass effect may die because the sound from it and the sound reected by the wall may cancel out each other. To prevent this from happening, face the subwoofer system at an angle as shown in g. A. Note: There may be a case that you cannot obtain enough super-bass sounds from the subwoofer when listening in the center of the room. This is because standing waves have been developed between two parallel walls and they cancel the bass sounds. In such a case, face the subwoofer obliquely to the wall. It also may be necessary to break up the parallel surfaces by placing bookshelves etc. along the walls.

The system connection
( U.S and CANADA model only ) This unit has a system connection jack. Use the supplied system connector cable when connecting a YAMAHA component equipped with a system connector jack. When connected, the power mode (ON/OFF) of this unit can be controlled by the power button of the YAMAHA component. During this time, set the Power button of this unit to OFF. The Power of this unit can be turned on even when the power switch is set to OFF. Note: When the Power switch of this unit is set to ON, the connected component will not control the Power mode of this unit, even though they are connected via a system connection. The power mode of this unit will always be ON.
Connecting components and the subwoofer to AC power
After you complete a subwoofer connection, plug the amplier, TV or other audio/video component, and the subwoofer into an AC outlet of appropriate voltage.

Pre-adjusting the subwoofer volume
Before you use the subwoofer, rst adjust the volume balance between the subwoofer and the front speakers by following the procedure below.
1. Set the VOLUME control to minimum (0). 2. Turn on the power to all other components. 3. Press the Power switch to the ON position.
Turn on the power switch of the connected component When the subwoofer is connected using system connection.
4. Play a source that contains low-frequency
sounds. Adjust the ampliers volume control to the desired listening level.
5. Increase the volume gradually to adjust the
volume balance between the subwoofer and the front speakers. To enjoy natural bass sound, keep the subwoofer volume at a level where it is barely distinguishable from other speakers.
6. Adjust the volume of the entire sound system
using the ampliers volume control.
1 POWER indicator
Lights up GREEN when the POWER switch (2) is turned ON. When the subwoofer is connected using system connection, light up green by turning on the switch of the connected component. ( The System connection: See page 4 for more details.)
Note: It is recommended to set the VOLUME control about in the middle position when using in a multi channel home theater system.
2 Power switch
Press this switch to the ON position to turn on the power to the subwoofer. When the power of the subwoofer is on, the power indicator (1) on the top panel lights up green. Press this switch again to set it to the OFF position to turn off the power of the subwoofer.
3 VOLUME control
Adjusts the volume level. Turn the control clockwise to increase the volume, and counterclockwise to decrease the volume.
4 INPUT terminal
Input terminal for line level signals from the amplier.
Advanced Yamaha Active Servo Technology II
In 1998, Yamaha brought to the marketplace speaker systems utilizing YST ( Yamaha Active Servo Technology ) to give powerful, high quality bass reproduction. This technique uses a direct connection between the amplier and speaker, allowing accurate signal transmission and precise speaker control. As this technology uses speaker units controlled by the negative impedance drive of the amplier and resonance generated between the speaker cabinet volume and port, it creates more resonant energy (the air woofer concept) than the standard bass reex method. This allows for bass reproduction from much smaller cabinets than was previously possible. Yamahas newly developed Advanced YST II adds many renements to Yamaha Active Servo Technology, allowing better control of the forces driving the amplier and speaker. From the ampliers point of view, the speaker impedance changes depending on the sound frequency. Yamaha developed a new circuit design combining negative-impedance and constant-current drives, which provides a more stable performance and clear bass reproduction without any murkiness.

Refer to the chart below if the unit does not function properly. If the problem you are experiencing is not listed, or if the instructions fail to help you resolve the problem, disconnect the power cord and contact your authorized Yamaha dealer or service center.
Power is not supplied even though the POWER switch is set to the ON position. No sound.
Cause The power plug is not securely connected. The VOLUME control is set to 0. A subwoofer cable is not connected securely.
Remedy Turn the power switch OFF, then connect the power plug securely. Turn the VOLUME control to the right (clockwise). Connect a subwoofer cable securely.
Sound level is too low.
You are playing a sound source that Play a sound source that includes includes inadequate bass frequencies. more bass frequencies. The sound level has been diminished by standing waves. Reposition the subwoofer, or break up the parallel wall surface by placing bookshelves or other large objects along the wall. Turn up the volume. Check the speaker mode setting on the component.
The input signal is too small. No signal from the subwoofer output terminal of the component.
