Important Safety Information
It is most important that this instruction book should be retained with the appliance for future reference. Should the appliance be sold or transferred to another owner, or should you move house and leave the appliance, always ensure that the book is supplied with the appliance in order that the new owner can get to know the functioning of the appliance and the relevant warnings. These warnings have been provided in the interest of safety. You MUST read them carefully before installing or using the appliance.

Installation

This appliance is heavy. Care should be taken when moving it. It is dangerous to alter the specifications or attempt to modify this product in any way. All packing and transit bolts must be removed before use. Serious damage can occur to the product and to property if this is not adhered to. See relevant section in instructions. Any plumbing work required to install this appliance should be carried out by a qualified plumber or competent person. Any electrical work required to install this appliance should be carried out by a qualified electrician or competent person. Care must be taken to ensure that the appliance does not stand on the electrical supply cable. If the machine is situated on a carpeted floor, please adjust the feet in order to allow air to circulate freely.

Child Safety

This appliance is designed to be operated by adults. Children should not be allowed to tamper with the controls or play with the product. Pets and children have been known to climb into washer-dryers. Please check your drum before use. The glass door becomes very hot during the washing and drying cycle. Keep children away from the vicinity of the appliance whilst it is in operation. Keep all packaging well away from children. Keep all detergents in a safe place out of childrens reach.
Always unplug the appliance and turn off the water supply after use. Do not overload the appliance. See relevant section in the instruction book. Only wash and dry fabrics which are designed to be machine washed and dried. If in doubt, consult the care label on the clothes. Before washing, ensure that all pockets are empty and buttons and zips are fastened. Avoid washing 2
frayed or torn articles and treat stains such as paint, ink, rust, and grass before washing. Underwired bras must NOT be machine washed. Any objects such as coins, safety pins, nails, screws, stones or any other hard, sharp material can cause extensive damage and must not be placed into the machine. Garments which have been in contact with volatile petroleum products should not be machine washed. If volatile cleaning fluids are used, care should be taken to ensure that the fluid is removed from the garment before placing in the machine. Wash small items such as socks, laces, washable belts etc in a washing bag or pillow case as it is possible for such items to slip down between the tub and the inner drum. Only use the advised quantities of fabric softener. Damage to the fabric can ensue if you over-fill. Refer to the manufacturers recommendations of quantities. As some duvets and eiderdowns should be washed/dried in large commercial machines because of their bulk, please check with the manufacturer of the item before washing in a domestic machine. The users should always check that they have not left their gas lighters (disposable or otherwise) in their clothing. Never tumble dry items that have had contact with chemicals such as dry cleaning fluid.These are of a volatile nature and could cause an explosion. Only tumble dry items which have been washed in water or require airing. Plastic detergent dispensers should not remain in the drum during the drying cycle, as the plastic used is not designed to withstand the heat. If you wish to wash-through-to-dry you should use the conventional detergent dispenser drawer. Leave the porthole door slightly ajar between washes to preserve the door seal. Under no circumstances should you attempt to repair the machine yourself. Repairs carried out by inexperienced persons may cause injury or serious malfunctioning. Contact your local Service Force Centre. Always insist on genuine spare parts.

Your New Washer-Dryer

This new machine, which is fitted with the New Jet System, meets all modern requirements for effective treatment of laundry with low water, energy and detergent consumption.
The special wool programme with its new delicate wash system treats your woollens with extreme care. The balance control device ensures that the machine remains stable when spinning. Automatic cooling of the wash water to 60C before draining, with the 95C programme. This reduces thermal shock to fabrics, helping to prevent creasing. The two drying programmes will give your wash that soft, relaxed feel whatever the weather.

1 Programme selector dial
The selector is divided into 5 sections: Cottons Synthetics Delicates Wool Special programmes Off = Reset programme/Swichting the machine off

2 Spin Speed button

Press this button repeatedly to change the spin speed, if you want your laundry to be spun at a speed different from the one proposed by the machine. The relevant light will light up. The following speeds are available for the different fabrics. Cotton, linen: 700/900/1200 max 1400 r.p.m. (ZWD 1480 W) or max 1600 r.p.m. (ZWD 1680 W) Synthetics and wool: 700 max 900 r.p.m. Delicates: 700 r.p.m. Rinse Hold : when you choose this option, the machine will not drain the water of the last rinse, so as not to crease the laundry. At the end of the cycle, the Start/Pause button light will flash, to indicate that the water must be drained and a static zero will appear on the display. To complete the cycle, choose one of the following options: Select programme Drain: The water is emptied out without spinning. Attention! Before selecting programme Drain the selector dial has to be positioned on Off (cancelling). Depress Start/Pause button : after emptying, the machine performs the spin cycle corresponding to the type of fabric previously selected. Select the spin speed by means of the relevant button and then depress the Start/Pause button. The Rinse Hold option cannot be selected for the automatic WASHING & DRYING programme.
Position E corresponds to the ENERGY SAVING programme and position to cold wash. Turn the dial clockwise or anticlockwise to select the required wash and drying programme. Before setting the dial to any position ensure that the machine is switched off. At the end of the programme the selector dial must be turned to position Off.

Programme Option buttons

Depending on the programme, different functions can be combined. These must be selected after choosing the desired programme and before depressing the Start/Pause button. When these buttons are pressed, the corresponding pilot lights come on. When they are pressed again, the pilot lights go out. If an incorrect option is selected, the corresponding pilot light flashes for about 2 seconds and the message Err is displayed. 6

3 Prewash button

With this option the machine performs a prewash cycle at 30C max. The prewash cycle ends with a short spin at 650 r.p.m. in programmes for Cottons and Synthetics, and with emptying of the water for Delicates. This option is not available with the wool programme. For use when washing heavily soiled laundry.

For COTTON you can select a drying time from 10 minutes to 130 minutes. For SYNTHETICS you can select a time from 10 minutes to 100 minutes.

8 Delay Start button

This button makes it possible to delay the starting of the programme by up to 24 hours. The delay you have selected is shown on the display for about 3 seconds; afterwards, the duration of the programme reappears. You must select this option after you have set the programme and before you press the Start/Pause button. The time value shown on the display will decrease by one unit every hour. You can change the delay time at any moment, before you press the Start/Pause button. If you have already pressed the Start/Pause button, and you wish to change or cancel the delay time, proceed as follows: set the machine to PAUSE by pressing the Start/Pause button; press the Delay Start button until the display shows the desired delay time or press the Delay Start button once, to erase the delay time. The display will indicate 0 h. press the Start/Pause button again. Important! The door will be locked throughout the delay time. If you need to open the door, you must first set the machine to PAUSE by pressing the Start/Pause button. After you have closed the door, press the Start/Pause button again.

AA button

This option can be selected for cottons lightly or normally soiled with a temperature of 40C or higher and for synthetics lightly or normally soiled with a temperature of 50C or higher. If you select 60C together with option 40 AA on cottons programmes, the machine will prolong the time in the washing phase and the washing temperature will be reduced: this will allow an AA class in energy efficiency and washing performance to be achieved. If you select 95C, 60C, 50C or 40C and press the 40 AA button, the washing temperature will be reduced and the washing time will be prolonged. Important ! If you select the programme E60 (cottons) the pilot light corresponding to the 40AA option light up automatically.

5 Super Rinse button

Can be used with all programmes except the wool programme. The machine performs 4 rinses instead of 3. This option is recommended for people who are allergic to detergents and in areas where the water is very soft.

6 Auto Dry button

This button allows you to choose the required degree of drying for cottons and synthetics: - Extra dry (only for cottons) - Store dry (cottons and synthetics) - Iron dry (only for cottons) The drying time is automatically adjusted by the machine: the laundry will be dried to the selected degree of dryness.

9 Start/Pause button

This button has three functions: Start: after you have selected the desired programme and options, press this button to start the machine. The light above the button will stop flashing and remain lit. If you have selected a delay start by means of button 8, the countdown will begin and will be shown on the display. Pause: when you press this button again, the programme in progress is interrupted. The light above the button will start flashing. To restart the programme, press the button again. 7

7 Drying Time button

If you wish to carry out a timed programme instead of an electronic programme push the button until the drying time you want appears in the display according to the fabrics (cotton or synthetics) you have to dry.
Draining of water: by depressing the Start/Pause buttont the water of programme Soak is emptied out and the water of the last rinse on programmes with Rinse Hold option is emptied out and the laundry is spun. Important! You must set the washing machine to PAUSE before you make any change in the programme in progress.
After starting the programme, the remaining time is updated every minute. Delay start, a time value indicated in hours and selected by means of the relevant button.

10 Display

The following pieces of information are shown on the display: Duration of washing programme in hours and minutes, after you have selected a programme (for example 2.05). The delay time is displayed for 3 seconds, then the duration of the selected programme reappears. After you have pressed the Start/Pause button, the countdown begins, and the delay time value decreases by one unit every hour. You can delay the start of the selected programme by up to 24 hours in one hour intervals. An incorrect option selection has been made: this is indicated by the message Err when a function incompatible with the current programme is selected.

Some stains such as fruit, wine, grass, rust etc. are difficult to remove and should be treated before washing with specific products, which can be found in most household shops. In some cases it may help to soak the stain before washing with a special presoak product or biological detergent. If you have used the machine to wash, rinse or spin only non-colour fast garments, there may be dye left in the sump. To ensure any subsequent wash is not contaminated with the dye, select and carry out a rinse and spin programme, without any garments, to ensure that any dye is removed from the sump. Do not leave the damp laundry load in a heap too long before drying. Avoid drying dark clothes with light coloured fluffy items such as towels as these can attract the fluff. If you overdry the laundry, besides wasting energy, any subsequent ironing may become more difficult because the fabric could be heavily crumpled. Remove the laundry when the appliance has finished drying. To avoid a static charge when drying is completed, use either a fabric softener when you are washing the laundry or a fabric conditioner specifically for tumble dryers. Particularly delicate items such as synthetic curtains, woollen and silk, garments with metal inserts, nylon stockings, bulky garments such as anoraks, bedcovers, quilts, sleeping bags and duvets must not be machine dried. Garments padded with foam-rubber or materials similar to foam-rubber must not be machine dried; they represent a fire hazard. Also, fabrics containing residues of setting lotions or hair sprays, nail solvents or similar solutions must not be machine dried in order to avoid the formation of harmful vapours. For drying, follow the indications given on the manufacturers labels. May be tumble dried Drying at high temperature Drying at reduced temperature Do not tumble dry Important: As a dryer, the machine works on the condensation principle. Therefore, the water tap must be open and the drain hose must drain water into a sink or into the drain pipe, even during the drying cycle.

Which detergent?.

To ensure you obtain the best wash results from your appliance, it is important to use the right detergent in your everyday wash, and only detergents recommended for use in automatic machines. To maintain the appearance of your clothes and household textiles and to make them last longer you should use different types of detergent for different washes, whether for whites, colours or delicates.

And in which form?

Not only are there different types of detergent, but they are also available in different forms. Whether you chose a powder or liquid in traditional or compact form is your own personal choice.

TRADITIONAL POWDERS

Pour the powder directly into the dispenser drawer. Do not sprinkle powder onto clothes in the machine drum.

WHITES

We recommend the Ariel product range which is biological and designed to provide excellent cleaning and stain removal even at low temperatures.

TRADITIONAL LIQUIDS

Liquid can be placed in the main wash compartment of the detergent drawer marked with the symbol , start the machine immediately upon placing the detergent in the dispenser drawer. Alternatively the detergent is measured into the specially designed dosing device* which should be placed on top of the laundry, and at the back of the machine drum.

NON BIOLOGICAL

If you prefer to use a non biological detergent, which does not contain enzymes we recommend Fairy. Fairy provides good cleaning and stain removal.
COMPACT POWDERS AND LIQUIDS
Compact detergents (or concentrates as they are also known) are available in liquid or powder form, and generally require a smaller dosage. Follow the manufacturers instructions to ensure the most economical usage. Pour the detergent directly into the dispenser drawer, or alternatively measure the detergent into the specially designed dosing device* which should be placed on top of the laundry, and at the back of the machine drum. * If you use a dosing device in a washer dryer, please ensure the dosing device/ball is removed before carrying out a drying programme.

COLOUREDS

For coloured items you should use a detergent which is designed to clean while maintaining the original colour. Ariel Color does not contain bleach and therefore helps to preserve colours.

DELICATE ITEMS

When washing delicates such as woollens, you should use a product which is specially designed to care for fine fabrics. Dreft Automatic is suitable for woollens and other delicates.

FABRIC CONDITIONERS

These are ideal for improving softness, and also reduce static cling on synthetics and make ironing easier. They are available in two types: For example Lenor liquid fabric softener, for use in the washing machine/washer dryer. The liquid fabric softener should be poured into the compartment marked with the symbol. Follow the manufacturers dosage instructions and never exceed the MAX level. Bounce conditioning sheets for use in a tumble dryer. We recommend the conditioning sheets are pinned (using a safety pin) to an article of laundry and placed in the tumble dryer. 14

Descaling

The water we use normally contains lime. It is a good idea to periodically use a water softening powder in the machine. Do this separately from any laundry washing, and according to the softening powder manufacturer's instructions. This will help to prevent the formation of lime deposits.

Cleaning the drawer recess
Having removed the drawer, use a small brush to clean the recess, ensuring that all washing powder residue is removed from the upper and lower part of the recess. Replace the drawer and run the rinse programme without any clothes in the drum.

After each wash

Leave the door open for a while. This helps to prevent mould and stagnant smells forming inside the appliance. Keeping the door open after a wash will also help to preserve the door seal.

Maintenance Wash

With the use of low temperature washes it is possible to get a build up of residues inside the drum. We recommend that a maintenance wash be performed on a regular basis. To run a maintenance wash: The drum should be empty of laundry. Select the hottest cotton wash programme. Use a normal measure of detergent, must be a powder (such as Ariel Futur).

Cleaning the pump

The pump should be inspected if the machine does not empty and/or spin the machine makes an unusual noise during draining due to objects such as safety pins, coins etc. blocking the pump. Proceed as follows: Disconnect the appliance. If necessary wait until the water has cooled down. Open the pump door.

External cleaning

Clean the exterior cabinet of the appliance with soap and water only, and then dry thoroughly.
Cleaning the dispenser drawer
The washing powder and additive dispenser drawer should be cleaned regularly. Remove the drawer by pressing the catch downwards and by pulling it out. Flush it out under a tap, to remove any traces of accumulated powder. To aid cleaning, the top part of the additive compartment should be removed.
Place a container close to the pump to collect any spillage. Pull out the emergency emptying hose, place it in the container and remove its cap.

Symptom

The machine does not start

Possible causes

The door has not been closed. (E40) The plug is not properly inserted in the power socket. There is no supply at the socket. The main fuse or the fuse in the plug has blown. The Start/Pause button has not been depressed. The Delay Start option has been selected. The water tap is closed. (E10) The filter in the inlet hose is blocked. (E10) The inlet hose may be squashed or kinked. (E10) The door has not been closed. (E40) The end of the drain hose is too low. The end of the drain hose is submerged in water. There is no vent in the end of the drain hose. The drain hose may be squashed or kinked. (E20) The Rinse Hold option has been selected. The drain pump may be blocked (E20) The drain hose extension, if fitted, is not correct. Follow the instructions for connecting to the waste. The drainage system pipes are blocked. The wash load is unbalanced: redistribute the clothes inside the drum to allow the machine to spin. Too much detergent or unsuitable detergent has been used (creates too much foam). Check whether there are any leaks from the inlet hose fittings. It is not always easy to see this as the water runs down the hose; check to see if it is damp. The drain hose may be damaged or not securely positioned. The detergent dispenser drawer or recess is clogged. The drainage system pipes are blocked. The cap on the emergency emptying hose has not been replaced after cleaning the pump. Too little detergent or unsuitable detergent has been used. An insufficient amount of detergent leaves the laundry looking grey and causes lime scale to form. Stubborn stains have not been treated prior to washing The correct wash programme/temperature has not been selected. Too much laundry has been placed in the drum. 21

The internal packing has not been removed. The machine is in contact with the wall or furniture. The machine is not level and stable (check diagonally). The washing load is badly distributed in the drum. Maybe there is very little laundry in the drum. The water level is above the bottom edge of the door. The machine is heating the water or drying the clothes. The drum is turning. The electronic balance control device has cut in because the laundry is not evenly distributed in the drum. The laundry is redistributed by reverse rotation of the drum. This may happen several times before the unbalance disappears and normal spinning can resume. If, after a few minutes, the laundry is still not evenly distributed in the drum, the machine will spin at a lower spin or will not spin. In this case, redistribute the load manually and select the spin programme. The machine is fitted with a type of motor which makes an unusual noise compared with other traditional motors. This new motor ensures a softer start and more even distribution of the laundry in the drum when spinning, as well as increased stability of the machine. Machines based on modern technology operate very economically using very little water without affecting performance. The drying time or degree of drying has not been selected The water tap is not turned on (E10) The drain pump is clogged (E20) The machine is overloaded The selected drying time or degree of dryness was not suitable for the laundry.

Unpacking

All transit bolts and packing must be removed before using the appliance. You are advised to keep all the packaging for re-use in case the machine is to be transported again. Using a spanner unscrew and remove the two rear bottom screws. Slide out the two plastic pins. Lay the machine gently on its back, making sure that the hoses are not squashed.
Fill all the holes with the plastic plugs supplied with the instruction booklet.
Important ! You are advised to keep all the packaging for re-use in case the machine is to be transported again. In case of moving out the same precautions as per paragraph The dangers of freezing must be taken i.e. the residual water in the hoses must be pumped out.

Positioning

Install the machine on a flat hard floor. Make sure that air circulation around the machine is not impeded by carpets, rugs etc. Check that the machine does not touch the wall or other kitchen units. Never place cardboard, wood or similar materials under the machine to compensate for any unevenness in the floor. Your new washing machine has been designed to be permanently plumbed in to your homes water supply and drainage system. However, if this is not possible, it may be connected to a suitable existing tap with the drain hose discharging into a sink. The appliance has an inlet hose, with female 3/4 BSP thread connector. If this connection is not compatible with the plumbing of the existing installation, a variety of connectors are available from good hardware stores and plumbers merchants to suit most domestic plumbing. Any alteration to your existing plumbing must be carried out by a competent person, or qualified plumber.

Push the drain hose onto the spigot and secure with a clip if required, ensure a loop is formed in the drain hose (see diagram) to prevent waste from the sink entering the washing machine.

Special conditions

If the floor is carpeted or covered with crumbly or soft material, insert a rigid support base under the feet to prevent noise, vibration or displacement. The base should protrude a few centimetres beyond the edges of the machine. Warning The machine should NOT be placed on deep pile carpeting. Note Please ensure that when the appliance is installed it is easily accessible for the engineer in the event of a breakdown.
The drain hose may be extended to a maximum of 4 metres. An additional drain hose and joining piece is available from your local Service Force Centre. The joining piece must have an internal diameter of 18mm.
Before connecting up the machine to new pipework or to pipework that has not been used for some time, run off a reasonable amount of water to flush out any debris that may have collected in the pipes.
Washing machines and dishwashers should be connected to the FOUL drainage system, the water will then be taken to a sewage works for treatment before being discharged safely into a river. It is essential that these appliances are not connected to the surface water drainage system as this water is discharged directly into a river or stream and may cause pollution. If you require any further advice please contact your local water authority.

Levelling

Level the washing machine by raising or lowering the feet. The feet may be tight to adjust as they incorporate a self locking nut, but the machine MUST be level and stable (check diagonally).

SHOWER

Any necessary adjustment can be made with a spanner. Accurate levelling prevents vibration, noise and displacement of the machine during operation. Some vibration is inevitable, especially if mounted on a wooden floor. Sprung wooden floors are particularly susceptible to vibration. For advice, consult a builder. If possible, always place the machine on a solid floor.

UNTREATED DISCHARGE

Electrical connection

Any electrical work required to install this appliance should be carried out by a qualified electrician or competent person. WARNING: THIS APPLIANCE MUST BE EARTHED. The manufacturer declines any liability should this safety measure not be observed. Before switching on, make sure the electricity supply voltage is the same as that indicated on the appliances rating plate. The rating plate is located at the top of the rim of the open door.
The wire coloured brown must be connected to the terminal marked L or coloured red. Upon completion there must be no cut, or stray strands of wire present and the cord clamp must be secure over the outer sheath. WARNING: A cut off plug inserted into a 13 amp socket is a serious safety (shock) hazard. Ensure that the cut off plug is disposed of safely. Should the appliance power supply cable need to be replaced, this should be carried out by our Service Force Centre. Note When the appliance is installed the power supply cable must be accessible.

Permanent connection

In the case of permanent connection it is necessary that you install a double pole switch between the appliance and the electricity supply (mains), with a minimum gap of 3mm between the switch contacts and of a type suitable for the required load in compliance with the current electrical regulations. The switch must not break the yellow and green earth cable at any point.
The appliance is supplied with a 13amp plug fitted. In the event of having to change the fuse in the plug supplied, a 13amp ASTA approved (BS1363/A) fuse must be used. Should the plug need to be replaced for any reason, proceed as described below. The wires in the mains lead are coloured in accordance with the following code: Green and Yellow - Earth Blue - Neutral Brown - Live

The wire coloured green and yellow must be connected to the terminal marked with the letter E or by the earth symbol or coloured green and yellow. The wire coloured blue must be connected to the terminal marked N or coloured black.
