WARNING Before proceeding with the installation of Windows 7 Professional, you should back up all personal data, such as files and images. If it is not backed up, your personal data will be lost.
You need the following items to help you install Windows: A supported HP business notebook PC model High-speed Internet access
Windows OS recovery media provided by HP Media from an alternate source may require a product ID (PID) 1 HP Driver Recovery DVD for your model or HP SoftPaq Download Manager
Important Make sure you have the latest compatible versions of drivers and enhancements shown in tables 1 and 2. In addition, you must have a Microsoft operating system license for each system on which you install Windows 7 Professional.
Note You can also download HP drivers and utilities including the most current BIOS for supported notebook PC models from the HP website.
Installing the OS, drivers, and enhancements
This section provides guidelines for users performing a clean installation of Windows 7 Professional on a supported HP business notebook PC.
Important Follow the installation instructions in the order provided. Failure to complete these steps in the proper order can result in an unsuccessful or unstable installation. This section provides guidelines for users who perform a clean installation of Microsoft Windows.
1. Update to the latest BIOS version. 2. Change the boot order in F10 Setup so that the optical drive is the first boot device. 3. Boot with the Windows OS recovery disc provided by HP; follow the on-screen instructions for
installation. OS recovery media from HP do not require a product ID or key for installation on a supported current HP business notebook PC. Legacy models will require a valid product ID. Retain the HP_TOOLS partition to provide support for HP QuickLook 2, the F10 Setup graphical user interface, and HP diagnostics on current models. For more information, refer to the white paper, HP Business Notebook Computer EFI Guidelines.
4. If necessary, install the appropriate communications driver from the HP website, or, if available,
the Driver Recovery DVD and configure your Internet connection.
5. Install critical and other Microsoft patches from www.microsoft.com/windowsupdate. Reboot the
system after the patches have been installed.
6. Install the drivers and enhancements listed using HP SoftPaq Download Manager (available from
www.hp.com/go/sdm); alternatively, you can download individual SoftPaqs from the HP website. For more information, refer to Appendix A: Using HP SoftPaq Download Manager.

An updated version of HP ProtectTools can be installed once installation of Windows 7 is completed.
Appendix C: Windows XP Mode and Windows Virtual PC
Windows XP Mode is a new feature supported in Windows 7 Professional and Windows 7 Ultimate. Windows XP Mode allows a virtual machine running Windows XP Professional to be accessed from within Windows 7. Users can install legacy applications in the Windows XP Mode environment for greater compatibility and convenience. These applications can be launched directly from Windows 7. Microsoft Windows XP Mode requires a processor capable of hardware virtualization with the feature enabled. HP recommends that virtualization technology remained disabled unless specialized applications are being used in order to reduce potential security risks. Enabling Virtualization Technology in BIOS Setup and XP Mode Installation: 1. Restart the computer, then press F10 to enter BIOS Setup while the Press the Esc key for Startup Menu message is displayed in the lower left corner of the screen. 2. Enable the Virtualization Technology setting listed in the Device Configuration section of the System Configuration tab. a. If this option is not available, your CPU does not support virtualization technology 3. Exit and save changes.
Installing Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP Mode Installation: 1. Go to the Microsoft website at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/. 2. Click on Get Windows XP Mode and Windows Virtual PC now. 3. Follow the on-screen instructions to download and install Windows XP Mode. 4. After installation is complete, reboot the system. 5. Click on All Programs>Windows Virtual PC>Windows XP Mode. 6. Follow the on-screen instructions to configure Windows XP Mode. 7. Within the Windows XP Mode environment, install desired applications. a. Applications installed in the Windows 7 environment will not be accessible in the Windows XP Mode environment b. As with any OS installation, antivirus software and regular OS updates are highly recommended For additional information on Windows XP Mode, go to the Microsoft website at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/.
Appendix D: Q & A
Q. A. How do I know if my CPU supports virtualization technology? Many processors from Intel and AMD support virtualization technology, including: AMD Turion X2 AMD Turion II AMD Athlon X2 Intel Core 2 Extreme Processor QX9300 Intel Core2 Extreme Processor X9100 Intel Core2 Duo Processor T9900 Intel Core2 Duo Processor T9800 Intel Core2 Duo Processor T9600 Intel Core2 Duo Processor T9550 Intel Core2 Duo Processor T9400 Intel Core2 Duo Processor P9500 Intel Core2 Duo Processor P8800 Intel Core2 Duo Processor P8700 Intel Core2 Duo Processor P8600 Intel Core2 Duo Processor P8400 Intel Core 2 Duo LV Processor SL9300 Intel Core 2 Duo LV Processor SL9400 Intel Core 2 Duo LV Processor SL9600 Intel Core 2 Duo ULV Processor SU9300 Intel Core 2 Duo ULV Processor SU9400 If your processor does not appear on this list, a utility to test for hardware virtualization technology support is available from Microsoft at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/. Why should I install anti-virus software in XP Mode? XP Mode is a virtualized PC environment within Windows 7 and is susceptible to viruses and other threats. This environment should also be maintained with updates and patches. Why is virtualization technology disabled by default? Virtualization technology is disabled in F10 Setup to reduce potential security threats. This should only be enabled when used with applications which require hardware virtualization.
