Goals of the Open Source Browser

1. True Web access

Allow users to access all Web pages on the Internet and Intranets, not just mobile operators walled gardens. Our earlier user studies show Web browsing is still too difficult for the average user.
2. Solve usability problems of browsing on a mobile phones
3. Bring down costs and effort for developing and licensing browser software for Nokia

Browse anytime, anywhere. Users want access to their favorite sites. Not everyone has access to a PC or wants to use one. Break the dead-lock: little mobile friendly content -- few users
By taking mobile users to the True Web we create the necessary incentive for content providers to start to test their Web site with mobile phones and to adapt their service for mobile usage.

Web Site Compatibility

A browser on a mobile phone needs to support the same content as desktop browsers. Support all the standard and de-facto usage of Web technologies.

We solved the hardest part of Web site compatibility by adopting an Open Source engine for desktop browsers: WebCore and JavaScriptCore Benefits:
Clean design. Acceptable RAM and ROM footprint for S60 phones. Good performance. Web site compliance. Active, open community. LGPL license.
Intra-page navigation and interaction
Make it easy and quick to find content on a page. Make text readable, without horizontal scrolling. Avoid modes (e.g. zooming mode & scrolling mode), too complex for users. Make content designed for mouse interaction work, such as Javascript menus. Manage with five-way cursor keys, minimize use of options menu, do not count on users learning short cut keys. Intuitive to use, do not require reading the user manual.

Any changes to the layout might break a page.
E.g. time tables, maps, Javascript menus and other DHTML.

Mini Map Method

Mini Map thumbnail overview
provides overview while scrolling. thumbnail image layered semitransparent on top of main view. shows position of the view port. users find this feature easily because it activates automatically.

full screen overview. allows user to change the position of the view port. manual activation, user needs to find this feature.

Virtual Pointer

Combines the benefits of mouse pointer and focus navigation.
Javascript menus and other DHTML can only reliably work with a free moving cursor because the browser needs to produce the expected Javascript events. Hand held operation of focus navigation is reliable.
Our virtual pointer moves with adaptive speed, but still allows to reach all positions on the Web page.

Usability Test Results

Tested features:
Intended Page Layout, Narrow Text Column, Mini Map thumbnail, Text Search.
20 users, duration 2 weeks, diverse, non-technical persons, in Finland.
Group 1: tested Mini Map in first week, Narrow Layout in second week. Group 2: opposite order.

Result:

Strong preference for Mini Map method. 12 users have extreme preference. 2 users preferred Narrow Layout, both learned to use it first.

Products with the Open Source Browser for S60
All Nokia S60 3rd edition phones include the Open Source Browser as an add-on browser. Some of these are in the shops already.

Plans for The Future

Open Source Plans
We have released our changes to WebCore and WebKit already. We will also release S60 WebKit, a developer UI, and all tools needed for developers to built their own browser for S60 phones.
Plans for next product releases
Open Source Browser becomes the default browser on S60, WML support. Further improved usability. Mobile operator requirements.

Installation

Make sure that the synchronization utility (PC Suite) for smartphone connection with PC is installed on your PC. You can find this program on CD that is supplied with your smartphone. It is necessary to install the following components: 1. SlovoEd dictionary engine; 2. One or more dictionary databases you want to use; 3. You can also install one or more sound modules. There are two ways of SlovoEd dictionary installation.
Installation from the desktop computer
To install the SlovoEd dictionary engine, dictionaries databases and sound modules, please do the following: 1. 2. Establish connection between your smartphone and desktop computer, using Bluetooth, Infrared port or cable.
Unpack zip-package on the desktop computer. In folder Program you will find the installation files (the dictionary engine, dictionary databases and sound modules). Do the following for each installation file: - run installation file by double click; - follow the installer instructions. 3. When installation is finished the SlovoEd icon should appear in the list of smartphones applications.
Installation from the device
To install the SlovoEd dictionary engine, dictionaries databases and sound modules, please do the following: 1. Unpack zip-package on the desktop computer. In folder Program you will find the installation files. 2. Copy the installation files to your smartphone (using Bluetooth, Infrared port or by some other method). 3. Do the following for each installation file: - run installation file by joystick or choose Options>Open in smartphones menu; - follow the installer instructions. 4. When installation is finished the SlovoEd icon should appear in the list of smartphones applications.

Uninstallation

You can remove dictionary database, sound module files and SlovoEd dictionary engine separately. When you remove one of the dictionary databases you can continue using SlovoEd with other dictionary databases. You should have installed at least one dictionary database to use program. To completely uninstall the program from the smartphone you need to remove all components: SlovoEd dictionary engine, all dictionary databases and sound modules. The dictionary engine is necessary for the SlovoEd usage. Do not delete it needlessly. Please refer to smartphones user manual for exact Uninstallation procedure.

Demo-version limitations and registration
The more you use an unregistered dictionary, the more you get the registration reminder message instead of translation. In case of sound module you will hear beeping instead of correct pronunciation. You have enter the registration code to get rid of these limitations. You will get this code by e-mail after purchasing. Each dictionary database and sound module should be registered by its own registration code. Please be accurate when you type the registration code: do not mix up zero with letter O, you should not enter any unnecessary spaces in the input field.
