Top-quality X-Y Stereo Microphone
The built-in X-Y stereo microphone assembly include two directional microphones mounted at a 90 angle to each other. While providing extremely wide coverage, this system delivers astonishingly natural stereo imaging with smooth, uniform response from full left to full right, without the level variations and phase anomalies that plague common stereo microphones. The microphones themselves are constructed of parts and materials that were carefully selected to deliver optimal recording precision and clarity without compromise. To further maximize the microphone assemblys performance it is mounted outside the POCKETRACK CX casing in a solid shock-resistant die-cast aluminum frame.

Advanced Recording Capability In Your Pocket
There are so many compelling reasons to record band rehearsals or music lessons for later review that a portable recorder is an essential item. Recording conferences and meetings has become a matter of course too. Naturally, the smaller and lighter that recorder is, while delivering top-class sound quality, the better. Weighing only 1.7 ounces (49 grams) complete with battery, the Yamaha POCKETRAK 2G Pocket Recorder is an unbeatable choice. Its only a half-inch (13 millimeters) thick and will slip unobtrusively into a shirt pocket. But this diminutive, lightweight package contains a large 2-gigabyte memory plus advanced digital audio technology that lets you record and play back with outstanding quality. In addition to a CD-quality linear PCM recording mode that lets you record up to 3 hours of music, there are a number of MP3 modes that provide significantly longer recording times. The supplied long-lasting rechargeable battery can keep the POCKETRAK 2G running for up to 19 hours continuously when recording in MP3 mode. Slide out the built-in USB connecter and connect the POCKETRAK directly to your computer to transfer files back and forth, and use the bundled CUBASE AI digital audio workstation software to edit and enhance your recordings with pro-level control. If sound is important to you, theres simply no reason not have a Yamaha POCKETRAK 2G Pocket recorder with you at all times.
High-sensitivity Tilt-up Microphone
In addition to superior basic performance, the built-in stereo microphone can be tilted upward when the POCKETRAK 2G is placed on a desk or table to minimize sound degradation due to reflection from the surface as well as pickup of mechanically transmitted noise. This high-performance microphone delivers excellent sound quality and signal-to-noise performance in a variety of recording situations.

For maximum quality when recording music youll want to set the record level manually. In manual mode the record level can be adjusted in 31 steps (0-30), and the POCKETRAK 2G has level meters and a peak indicator that make setting optimum levels quick and easy. For speech you can let the POCKETRAK 2G set the record level for you automatically by simply switching the ALC (Automatic Level Control) function ON. When ALC is ON the POCKETRAK 2G will automatically maintain the best recording level for maximum clarity and intelligibility.
Long-lasting Rechargeable Battery
The POCKETRAK 2G comes supplied with an advanced Sanyo eneloop rechargeable battery that can power the unit for up to 19 hours of continuous MP3 recording. To recharge the battery simply plug the POCKETRAK 2G directly into a USB port on your computer. Thanks to advanced Sanyo technology the eneloop battery can be recharged up to 1,000 times, and does not suffer from the self-discharge problems of similar batteries so it will be ready for use at any time. You can also use a standard alkaline battery to power the POCKETRAK 2G, but the supplied eneloop battery is probably the only battery youll ever need. Details about Sanyo eneloop technology and trademark information can be found at:
Direct USB 2.0 Computer Connection
To transfer files to or from your computer and/or charge the battery, slide out the built-in USB connector and connect the POCKETRAK 2G directly to a USB port. To remove the card, open the slot cover and push in the card gently. The card will be ejected slightly. Pull out the card carefully.
About the microSD card
If you plan to use any card other than the included microSD card, use a 512MB 2GB microSD card or a 4GB microSDHC card (these cards are compatible as of July 2008). However, some cards (depending on the manufacturer or type of card) may not work with the recorder. For more information on microSD cards, please visit the following Yamaha website: http://www.yamahasynth.com/
Before using the microSD card Make sure that you insert the microSD card in the recorder correctly. Otherwise, the recorder will not record or play. Do not apply too much force when you insert or remove the microSD card. Otherwise, you might injure your hand or nger or damage the card. If you insert the microSD card in the wrong orientation or upside down, the microSD card and/or the card slot may be damaged. If the recorder does not recognize the installed microSD card when the power to the unit is turned on, rst turn off the power, remove the card, insert the card correctly, then turn the power on. Do not install or remove the microSD card while the power to the unit is on. Otherwise, the data on the microSD card may be damaged. Do not touch the terminal on the microSD card or expose the card to water or dirt. Do not try to bend, fold or place a heavy object on the microSD card. Do not use or keep the microSD card in a location subject to static electricity or electric noise. Do not place the microSD card in the vicinity of corrosive chemicals or corrosive gas. Otherwise, the card may malfunction or data on the card may be lost. Never place the microSD card within reach of small children. A child may swallow the card accidentally. If you discard the microSD card without precautions, important or personal data that remains on the card may become accessible to unauthorized individuals. To avoid this risk, erase all data on the card, destroy the card physically, then discard it.

Recording
Before recording
The POCKETRAK CX enables you to optimize your recordings by setting the Recording mode, ALC (Auto Level Control) function, microphone sensitivity, High Pass (Low Cut) lter and other functions. This section explains Recording mode and the ALC function. Please refer to the Reference Manual for information on the other functions.
About Recording mode
The POCKETRAK CX records audio in the MP3 or PCM (WAV) format. As a rule of thumb, select PCM 44.1kHz (better sound quality) for Recording mode to record a musical performance. Select MP3 128kbps (smaller data size) to record musical practice sessions or conference meetings. Recording mode and application examples

the MIC LEVEL (recording level). Adjust the recording level while playing music, speaking, etc.
Hint: Setting the recording peak limiter When the recording peak limiter is set to ON, the recorder reduces sound distortion by automatically adjusting excessive peaks. It is recommended that you set the limiter to ON when you are recording audio. To set the recording peak limiter to ON, press and hold down the [MENU/ENTER] button for at least two seconds to access [REC MENU], then select ON for [REC LIMITER]. The peak limiter is available only when the ALC is set to OFF. Note: If an appropriate recording level cannot be achieved even if you raise the level to 40, slide the [MIC SENS] switch to [HIGH].
