Special Pointers for Using Mamiya Universal
Refer to the following pages for further details.
The 100 mm f/3.5 lens is a retracting type. When the lens has been retracted, focusing cannot be effected although the two images on the rangefinder coincide.
When taking photographs with the vertical format camera position, on a tripod, use a tripod adapter on the hand grip socket for vertical format photography.

Be sure to cock the shutter before keeping the shutter open with the press focus lever. Disengage the lever lock button and turn the lever in the same direction as the shutter cock; then the shutter will remain open. By pushing the lever back to its original position, the shutter will close.
When using the roll film holder for Mamiya RB or the various film holders and adapters for the 2 1/4 x 3 1/4 Graflok back, made by GRAFLEX , Inc., use the G adapter instead of the M adapter.

Main Features
The Mamiya Universal, the same unique breed as the Mamiya Press used by professional photographers both at home and abroad, is a large 6 x9 film format camera with the functional features listed below. It offers the distinct advantage of its large film size not only for general photography, but also for news photography, commercial work, and scientific application. * Large film size presents sharp, fine rendition of every detail. * Variety of interchangeable lenses ranging from 50 mm wide angle to 250 mm telephoto. * Quick interchangeability of lenses with bayonet ring mounting. * Accurate focusing through coupled rangefinder. * Finder with bright, easy-to-see brilliant frame, featuring automatic parallax compensation. * Further accurate focusing through ground glass focusing screen possible. * Quick photography with roll film holder (lever winding system). Available in 6 x 9 and 6 x 7 format for both 120 and 220 films. * Roll film holder K enables photography in 6 x 9, 6 x 6, or 6 x 4.5 format. * Also accepts dry plates and cut films, providing for single shots with these films. * Extreme close-up photography through using spacer set and/or extension rings. * Use of Polaroid Land pack film holder offers instant photographic prints in 3 X 4 inch format. * The G adapter enables using the roll film holder and various film holders for Mamiya RB, in addition to the film holders of 2 x 3 Graflok back made by Graflex, Inc. * Easy-to-grasp hand grip with cable release for added versatility. * Many other accessories available for any type of photography.
By rotating the bayonet ring counter clockwise until it stops, the red dot of the lens coupling mark on the bayonet ring comes to the top, and the dust cap on the front of the camera body can be removed. At this position of the bayonet ring, insert the lens, matching the red mark on the lens to the red mark on the bayonet ring. Then turn the bayonet ring clockwise, locking the lens in place. Detaching the lens is done in a reverse order to that described above.
PRECAUTION !
Do not touch the pin (9) on the camera body used to couple the lens to the rangefinder. If the lens is changed while a loaded film holder is attached to the camera, be sure to insert a dark slide into the holder.
When using the 100mm f/3.5 standard lens, the lens-shutter assembly must be pulled out from its retracted position before taking general photographs. Grip the lens-shutter assembly firmly, turn it slightly counterclockwise, and pull it out; then, turn it clockwise (in the arrow direction) and secure it in place. If the lens-shutter assembly is left in its retracted position, the coupled rangefinder will not function even when the two images coincide and form a single image. Although the lens is not used for normal photography with the lensshutter assembly in its retracted position, the lens is designed to allow its lens-shutter assembly to remain retracted so that it can be used even when extension rings are used. Also lens retraction is necessary, when using this lens with another camera whose back mount can be extended, when taking a picture with the back mount tilted.
Attaching the Hand Grip
Stabilizing Plate
To attach the hand grip, insert the hand grip into the grip socket (8) of the camera body, and firmly turn the hand grip lock ring (12). Screw the end of the cable release (15) extending from the hand grip into the release socket (25) of the lens-shutter assembly. While dismounting a lens, hang the cable release on the cable release holder (11).
Pull out the stabilizing plate (7) on the bottom of the camera body when resting the camera on a desk, table, or other surface.
M Adapter
Before attaching the back, confirm that both side locking slides (5) are kept at their lowest position. If not, push down the locking slide while pushing in the lock button (5). Align the red point on the M adapter, G adapter, or Polaroid Land camera back (Polaroid Land pack film holder and focusing hood model P) with the red point on the camera body, inserting both sides of the protruded portions to the indented portions on the camera body. Securely push up the locking slide on both sides. While pushing up the slide, the lock button will spring out automatically. The lock button functions to prevent the back from being detached unexpectedly from the camera body. Secure both sides of the back by using the locking slides (5). Do not raise the camera by holding the back in a condition that only one side is secured. To remove the back, depress both side locking slides (5) while the lock buttons (5) are pushed in.
When installing the M adapter on the camera back, the roll film holder for Mamiya Press, focusing screen holder, and so on can be used. To attach the above-mentioned accessories to the adapter, keep the flattened edges of the two locking knobs of the M adapter parallel with the bottom line of the picture format, insert the top of the holder in the upper groove, and push in the bottom: then rotate the two knobs 90 degrees either to the right or left.
G Adapter
Polaroid Land Camera Back
When the G adapter is attached instead of the M adapter, the roll film holder for Mamiya RB can be used. Furthermore, the roll film holder and the focusing panel made by GRAFLEX, Inc., and accessories for the GRAFLOK back can be employed.
Remove the camera back adapter and attach the Polaroid Land camera back directly to the camera body. The Polaroid Land pack film holder and the focusing hood model P are available. With the Polaroid Land pack film holder, use a Polaroid a-exposure, 3 x 4 inch Land film pack. For color photography, use Polaroid Polacolor film type 108 or 668, for black-and-white photography, use Polaroid Land film type 107, 665 or 667 By attaching the focusing hood model P, direct focusing through the ground glass focusing screen of 3 x 4 inch format (ef-
fective picture size of 2 7/8 x 3 3/4 inch, 73mm x 95mm) becomes possible. On the ground glass focusing screen are 6 x 9 and 6 x 7 format indicating lines.
NOTE :
The back attaching system used on this camera is exclusive with Mamiya; thus, do not attempt to use other Polaroid Land camera backs.
Operating the Viewfinder
Selecting Brilliant Frame in the Viewfinder \ Focusing with Coupled Rangefinder
Within the small circle in the center of the viewfinder field two images of the subject are visible. Turn the focusing ring so that these two images coincide. When focusing, coincide the double images at the center of the circle. Looking through the center of the eyepiece is also a key point in accurate focusing. When turning the focusing ring of the lens barrel, be careful not to turn the bayonet ring of the camera body. When the lens-shutter assembly is in a retracted position, or when extension rings are used, the rangefinder will not function even though the double images coincide.
The viewfinder field frame, indicating the field for 6 x 9 and 6 x 7 formats, is adjustable for 100mm, 150mm and 250mm focal length lenses. By sliding over the slide button (28), adjust the number in the indicator window (27) to match the focal length of the using lens. When using the 50mm or 75mm lens, attach the exclusive optical viewfinder of each lens to the accessory shoe on the camera body.
Parallax
Brilliant frames in the viewfinder for 100 mm, 150mm and 250mm lenses are coupled with the rangefinder to automatically correct parallax.
Areas of Viewfinder Field to be Composed
When using Roll Film Holder
When composing the 6 x 9 or 6 x 7 format with the viewfinder frame, employ inside edges of the frame for subjects at close distance; use the outer edges of the frame for subjects further away.
For close range
Distance Range Composed by Brilliant Frame
Focal length of lens 100mm :;;; 150mm
250mm f/5
The 250mm f/5 lens interlocks with the rangefinder from distances of 20 ft (7m) to CO (infinity). When photographing with the 6 x 6 format or 6 x 4.5 format by employing the roll film holder model K, use the attached finder mask. See page 24 for details.
For close ranges, use inside edges of frame 3.5ft to approx. 6ft (2m) (1m) 6ft. to approx. 9ft. (2m) (3m)
For distances further away, use outside edges of frame approx. 6ft. to infinity (2m) approx. 9ft. to infinity (3m) approx. 12ft. to infinity (4m)

Areas of Viewfinder Field to be Composed (cont.)
When Using Polaroid Land Pack 50mm Lens
Attach the optical viewfinder for 50mm lens on the accessory shoe. To correct parallax, turn the knob at the back of the viewfinder and select the same distance scale shown on the dial as the focused distance to subject.
Deciding the Field Composition
Since the Polaroid film pack photographs a wider area than does the viewfinder field frame of the 6 x 9 cm format, compensate the field composition in the following manner, depending on the focal length of the lens to be used. For accurate field composition, use the focusing hood model P. Also, the optical viewfinder model P for 75mm, 100mm and 127mm lenses is available to ensure accurate field of view. The 75mm and 127mm focal length lenses are designed to cover the entire picture area of the Polaroid film pack (3 x 4 ) inch format). However, since other ordinary Mamiya Press lenses are designed for the 6 x 9 cm format, if these lenses are used with the Polaroid film pack, the four corners of the format may be slightly darkened.
75mm Lens
Attach the optical viewfinder for 75mm lens to the accessory shoe. To correct parallax, turn the knob at the back of the viewfinder and select the same distance scale shown on the dial as the focused distance to subject. (The brilliant frame of 3 x 4 inch format indicates the field of view when photographing with the Polaroid Land pack film holder). Attach a finder mask to the viewfinder window of the camera body. For correcting parallax, select the brilliant frame of the viewfinder for 250mm lens, moving your eye about until the brilliant frame is centered in the viewfinder field.
127mm Lens
Film Holder
With the 100 mm lens :
Use the viewfinder entire area. In this case, the actual picture area covers a slightly wider field.
With the 75mm lens:
Use the brilliant frame for 3 x 4 format in the optical viewfinder for 75mm lens.
With the 127mm lens:
By observing the camera viewfinder, determine the field of view by using the 6 x 7 format brilliant frame for 100 mm lens as a guide.
With the 150mm lens: With the 50mm lens:
Attach the optical viewfinder for 50 mm lens on the accessory shoe and observe the viewfinder entire area. Determine the field of view by covering the viewfinder mask for 3 x 4 format on the camera finder window,
With the 250mm lens:
Determine the field of view by inserting the mask for 250mm lens in the finder mask for 150mm lens.

Shutter Operation
Press Focus Operation
Cock the shutter by moving the shutter cocking lever (19). Screw the end of the cable release which extends from the hand grip into the cable release socket (25). To release the shutter, press the shutter release trigger of the hand grip with the left forefinger. Also, the shutter can be released by tripping the shutter release lever (23).
When focusing through the ground glass, keep the shutter open by the following method. 1. Cock the shutter, regardless of the shutter speed setting.
By pushing the press focus lever back to its original position, the shutter will close. There is no need to reset the shutter.
PRECAUTION :
Be sure to operate the press focus lever AFTER cocking the shutter. While the shutter is kept opened, the shutter cannot be released with the shutter release button. Applying an excessive force to the release button may cause shutter damage. When the press focus lever is not used, be sure to engage the lock button to prevent inadvertently moving the lever.
2. Disengage the lock button by thoroughly pushing it to the camera body side and turn the press focus lever in the shutter cock direction; then the shutter will remain open.

Prior to Loading Roll Film
Set the automatic film wind stop device for the film to be used (120 or 220). Turn the counter change-over knob (R-4) either to the right or left until the figure appearing in the film indicator window (R-5) corresponds to that of the film to be used (120 or 220). Open the back cover By pulling out the back cover latch while pressing the back cover to the holder, the back cover can be opened. Make sure that the correct side of the pressure plate corresponds to the film used. One side of the pressure plate (R-14) is for No. 120 roll film and the other side IS for No. 220. The figure 120 or 220 is indicated on the window of the pressure plate. Reverse the pressure plate if it does not match the film
Removing the Pressure Plate:
Remove the plate by pushing its right side to the left, pulling it out from the plate catch (R-15).
R-4 R-3
Reattaching the plate :
While aligning the upper and lower edges of the plate with the flange, insert the groove into the plate catch (R-13) on the left, then hook the plate catch (R-15) on the right while pushing it slightly to the left Always ascertain that the correct side of the pressure plate corresponds to the film used. Use the convenient film sensitivity reminder dial (R-3) as a memo of film speed in the holder, turning the dial corresponding to the loaded film speed to the red mark.
Loading Roll Film
Avoid direct sunlight while loading or unloading film. Do it in the shade. Pull out the spool change knob (R-10) and place an empty spool into the spool chamber (R-12), Pull out the other spool change knob (R-10) and place a roll film into the film chamber (R-8). By turning the spool change knob either to the right or left after pulling it out, the knob will remain projected. By turning back the knob, the knob will snap back to its original retracted position. The memo clip at the holder back cover can accommodate a film box lid or a blank paper pad for memorandum.
Photographing
Draw out the end of the leader paper of the film, inserting the tip into the slit of the take-up spool. If the spool is not in the proper position or the leader paper of the film is not correctly inserted into the take-up spool slit, film winding cannot be operated properly or smoothly. Wind the film advance lever (R-1) gradually until the start mark on the leader paper aligns with the start marks (R-11) on the holder. Close the back cover and push in the back cover latch, keeping the back cover pressed to the holder. When the back cover is closed, the start marks will be slightly separated; however, this implies no bad effect whatsoever. As the film advance lever is carefully wound, figure 1 appears in the film counter window and the lever stops winding. Even before figure 1 appears in the film counter window, a heavy drag may be felt; however, continue winding until the lever actually stops. Now the first film frame is ready to be exposed Attach the loaded roll film holder to the camera body. Pull out the dark slide (R-6); now, start taking photographs,
Focusing Hood
Attach the holder to the camera body, pull out the dark slide, and start to photograph. After each exposure, open the back window, and turn the film advance knob until the next figure appears in the window. When removing the holder from the camera or changing the lens while the film is loaded, be sure to insert the dark slide.
Viewfinder Field for Photographing in 6 x 6 or 6 x 4.5 Format. Attach a finder mask for 100 mm lens to the viewfinder window of the camera body (this mask is for 6 x 6 format). For photographing in 6 x 4.5 format, insert the mask for 6 x 4.5 format into the back of the 6 x 6 format mask. To attach the mask to the camera body, raise the flat spring attached in front of the mask by holding it with the thumb and forefinger, and apply the mask to the top cover front frame and releasing the raised flat spring. To correct parallax, select the brilliant frame for 250mm lens, moving the eye around while looking into the viewfinder until the brilliant frame is centered in the entire viewfinder field.
For accurate focusing or for confirming the depth of field, use the focusing hood. A Fresnel lens is used with this focusing hood to make the whole image brighter and easier to focus.
Polaroid Land Pack Film Holder

Accessories for Polaroid Land Pack Film Holder
Focusing Hood Model P Optical Viewfinder Model P
for 75mm, 100mm, and 127mm Lenses 7
Format gauge
This focusing hood has the same size format as the Polaroid Land film pack. The focusing screen has a Fresnel lens, offering a bright, sharp image on the screen. Use this focusing hood to confirm accurate focus or the actual picture format. Since this focusing screen has indicating lines for 6 x 9 and 6 x 7 formats, it can be used as a focusing screen for composing with the roll film holder. The hood can be separated from the focusing screen panel, by sliding the locking slides on both upper and lower edges.
This optical viewfinder is especially designed for 75mm, 100mm and 127mm lenses to permit observing an accurate field of view when taklng pictures with the Polarold Land film pack; series 100 or 660 (3 x 4 inch). By attaching the viewfinder to the accessory shoe, and looking through the viewfinder eyepiece, the field of view corresponding to the lens used can be determined. To compensate for parallax, turn the knob on the back of the viewfinder, and set the focused distance to subject.
As a preparatory test when taking an important photograph, make a trial exposure with the Polaroid film pack to confirm lighting and composition of the actual object; then photograph the final picture on roll film and so on. Employing this procedure, unexpected failures can be prevented. In these cases, when placing this format gauge on the photographed subject, composition when photographing with a 6x9 format or 6 x 7 format can be ascertained in advance. Since four corners of the outline indicating the respective size are perforated, the picture can be cut and checked after being marked through these holes.
Focusing Screen Holder
Focusing.*
screen screen
release lever To focus with the ground glass image, keep the shutter open and the lens at its fullest aperture, focusing by rotating the focusing ring. (When keeping the shutter open, follow the instructions on Page 16.) Depth of field can be observed on the ground glass screen through stopping down the diaphragm by turning the aperture control lever. Full size of the focusing ground glass is for 6 x 9cm format, the light vertical lines indicating the 6 x 7cm format. After focusing, press the focusing screen release lever to permit the screen to retract, and insert the cut film/plate holder from one side of the focusing screen holder To remove the film holder, press the focusing screen release lever with your left hand, hold the film holder and draw it out by pulling it toward you. Be sure to close the shutter before attaching the film holder. Pull out the dark slide before photographing. Insert the dark slide before removing the film holder.
Immediately after focusing with the focusing screen, a cut film/plate holder can be inserted from one side of the focusing screen holder.
How to Open the Back Cover
By moving the back cover catch button at the bottom of the back cover in the direction of the arrow, the back cover will open. With the opening angle adjustment slide kept UP, the back cover will open horizontally; and with the opening angle adjustment slide kept DOWN, the cover will open upward.
Right-angle and Magnifying Focusing Backs
Right-angle focusing back
r 7 Eyecup
Focusing screen - release lever
This device enables observing the image on the ground glass from the rightangle direction against the optical axis. The right-angle magnifier can be very simply turned upward or sideward, facilitating focusing from any camera angle.
Attaching and Detaching the Right-angle Magnifier Magnifying focusing back
This back is provided with an eye-level, totally enclosed box instead of the right-angle magnifier of the right-angle focusing back. Precise focusing is possible by directly observing the image on the ground glass focusing screen through the eyepiece magnifier. The right-angle magnifier can be removed by swinging it around the bottom of the housing while depressing the button of the right-angle magnifier. To attach the right-angle magnifier, match the projections at the bottom of the magnifier to the holes of the holder, and press in the upper part. When attaching the magnifier, the button does not need to be pressed. The right-angle magnifier can be attached for up, down, right, and left directions. Merely attach it in the direction necessary for the camera angle employed. When looking from above or below, the image assumes the correct right-side-up position, but the right and left will be reversed. When looking from the side, right and left are correct but the image will be upside down.
Since a Fresnel lens is used on both focusing backs, the entire ground glass is very bright, and focusing can be easily accomplished because extraneous light is blocked out. The ground glass has light lines which indicate a 6 x 7 format. After focusing, insert a cut film/plate holder as well as the focusing screen holder for photographing.
Precaution
When using many extension rings for photographing in the 6 x 9cm format, certain lenses may produce pictures with darker corners. By stopping down the aperture while looking into the focusing screen, how much darker the corners appear can be observed, The 75mm f/5.6 and 250mm f/5 lenses cannot be mounted with extension rings.
Maximum Close-up Photographing Table
Use a set of five extension rings in various combinations between the lens-shutter assembly and the camera body for close-up photography.
Spacer Set
Polaroid Land Pack Film Holder A spacer is a device for close-up photography by extending the camera back by installing a spacer between the camera back and the film holder. Since two types (No. 1 spacer and No. 2 spacer) are combined as one set, the photographing range can be varied by changing the combination or the lens to be used. Extreme close-up photography can be achieved by combining with the extension rings. The Polaroid Land pack film holder can When be directly installed on the spacer. using an M-adapter or G-adapter, photography through all holders installable on these adapters can be achieved.

0 Features of Mamiya RB67 Pro-S
The Mamiya RB67 Pro-S is a unique, high-grade, 6 x 7cm lens-shutter type, single-lens reflex camera developed to offer excellent picture quality and easy handling. Mamiya feels confident that the extensive versatility and capabilities of the Pro-S will meet and satisfy the requirements of all photographers.
1. Rational 6 x 7cm format
Since the 6 x 7cm format covers an area 4.5 times the m m format, excellent picture quality is obtainable. Especially, it demonstrates superb results in color photography. The ratio between the length and width of 6 x 7cm formats is almost the same as that of large photographic paper, permitting economical enlargements without cropping. When designing a magazine layout, a sufficient blank space is reserved for headlines and explanatory notes, s o that the entire picture format can be fully utilized.
2. Single-lens reflex camera offering a bright, large finder image
Since parallax-free focusing in the outstanding feature of the single-lens reflex camera, speedy camera operation is possible through brilliant, precise 6 x 7cm picture composition.
3. Excellent Mamiya Sekor lenses
Mamiya Sekor lenses boast excellent image rendition and color balance. Various types ranging from wide-angle lenses to telephoto lenses are available.
These lenses are rationally grouped in series, whereby those exactly adaptable to ones particular photographing objectives are optionally selectable with ease.
6. Vertical or horizontal picture format quickly changed over with the revolving adapter
A revolving adapter is provided as a standard outfit, whereby the vertical or horizontal picture format is promptly selected by turning the camera body back by 90. without changing the camera position. This is especially convenient when the camera is mounted on a tripod.
4. Lens-shutter system suitable for electronic flash photography
By adopting the lens-shutter system, electronic flash is synchronized with all shutter speeds, making it possible to produce highly impressive photographs.
7. Finder format index interlocked with revolving adapter
When the revolving adapter is turned up to 90, horizontal format picture index red lines appear (or disappear), presenting proper picture composition.
5. Double-exposure prevention and multiexposure devices
An interlocking device for double-exposure prevention is incorporated in the Pro-S roll film holder. Since this device is interlocked with the Pro-S body mechanism, the shutter cannot be released unless the film is advanced. Also, film advance for the next exposure is impossible unless the shutter is released. When the shutter is released, the film wind-stop is automatically released. Multiple exposure photography is available simply by switching a lever.
8. Excellent film flatness ensured by Pro-S roll film holder
Various tests have been applied to the Pro-S roll film holder to stabilize film flatness. As a result, film flatness has been further improved.
9. Camera back adapter changeable according to photographing objectives
By changing the back adapter, depending on your photographic objective, the range of film applications can be widened to include 120 and 220 roll films, dry plates, cut films,
and 70mm film. The film holders and back adapters are very easily exchanged.
on the photographing objectives, a checker, a rangefinder spot, a microprism, and a cross-hair can be selected at your option.
10. Unique mirror shockless mechanism
By adopting a unique centrifuged friction governor system, the mirror functions smoothly without sensing shocks. Mirror shock, constituting the most important problem involved in large, singlelens reflex cameras, has been solved.
12. Excellent heat- and cold-resistant capacity
Camera component parts are capable of demonstrating their functions within a wide temperature range from approximately 120F to - 5OF (5OOC to - 2OOC). The lens-shutter maintains accurate function, even in severe cold, and shutter speed deviation is negligible. Its resistivity to coldness is superb. Although the camera operating unit grows sluggish at or below 15OF (-loo C), it is sufficiently capable of operating the camera until the temperature drops to approximately - 50 F (-ZOO C).
11. Large variety of finders
A big selection of finders conforming to your photographic objective are available. They include a CdS finder (appropriate exposure obtainable with Through-the-lens measuring system), a Prism finder (subjects can be seen as an erect image), a CdS prism finder (former two types of finders are combined). a Magnifying hood (easily visible and bright), a Dual magnifying hood (performs precision focusing by speedily changing the magnifier of high magnification), and a Universal sportsfinder (permits focusing on the focusing screen after it has been installed). The focusing screens are also easily exchangeable. Depending
13. Mirror-up photography (independent mirror release) possible
When sharp pictures are demanded, the mirror-up mechanism plays a big role. When taking a picture unhurriedly with the camera mounted on a tripod. or when photographing at slow shutter speeds or using a telephoto lens, the mirror-up operation merit is highly effective.
Shutter cocking pin
When cocklng the shutter with a finger, turn the cocking pin up to the red dot.
q Attaching and Removing the Lens
Attaching the Lens
After cocking the camera body mirror and the lens shutter, mount the lens on the camera body. Cocking the Mirror of Camera body 1. Remove the front body cap from the camera body. 2. Be sure that the mirror (3) is in the cocked, down position in the camera body, shielding the camera film plane from exposure to light. If the mirror is up, cock the mirror by fully pushing down the shutter cocking lever (1) toward the front of the camera.
Cocking the Lens Shutter
1. Remove the rear cap of the lens. 2. Cock the lens shutter. Firmly turn the shutter cocking pins (56) with your fingers. to the red dots (A) of the cocking position marks. Now the shutter blades are open. * When removing your fingers from the pins, the cocking pins will turn back to the green
1. Turn the bayonet ring (11) counterclockwise, and align the red dot on the bayonet ring with the triangular mark at the center. 2. Mount the lens, keeping the triangular mark aligned with the lens mounting mark (10); then firmly twist the bayonet ring clockwise. Now, the camera and lens have been set.
dots(B). * If the cocking pins are not fully turned to
the red dots (A), the shutter will not be completely cocked. * After removing the lens from the camera body, the shutter is always cocked.
NOTE: If the camera is placed with its back facing downward when attaching or removing the lens, without mounting the rear body cap or the film holder, the coupling mechanism may be damaged. Always pay attention to this caution.
l Shutter Cocking
Shutter Release Button
l Disengaging the release lock of the shutter release button
Removing the Lens
Remove the lens while the mirror and the shutter are cocked. Turn the bayonet ring (11) counterclockwise, aligning its red dot with the lens mounting mark (10) on the body, and remove the lens. r If the mirror and the shutter are not cocked in this instance, the lens cannot be removed, because turning the bayonet ring will be intercepted by action of the safety interlock mechanism.
P r e s s d o w n t h e shutter cocking lever (1). The shutter in the mounted lens and the mirror in the camera body are cocked simultaneously. The lever will return to its original position by self-action. * When shutter cocking is not completed, the shutter cocking lever will not return to its original position. * Once the shutter is cocked, the cocking lever will not move until the shutter is released by pushing the shutter release button. Therefore, when the cocking lever will not move. you know the shutter is cocked.
This safety mechanism is designed to prevent accidental release of the shutter while carrying the camera in its case. When the shutter release lock ring (6) is turned and the index mark is aligned with the white dot (A) on the body, the shutter release button (7) can be pressed. When the index mark is aligned with the orange dot (B), the shutter release button cannot be pressed. l Releasing the shutter When the shutter release button is pressed, the mirror is pushed up and the shutter is released. * If the mirror is not cocked, the shutter release button cannot be depressed. * The socket inside the shutter release button is threaded so that a cable release or a self-timer can be easily attached.
0 Operation of Focusing Hood
0 Raising the focusing hood
By raising the back side of the hood, the entire focusing hood will automatically spring into position.
Raising the magnifi-
By sliding the magnifier setting lever (19) to the left, the magnifier will automatically pop up.
0 Folding the focusing hood
With the magnifier in its closed position, fold down the front and back panels of the focusing hood, whereby the entire focusing hood is collapsi ble.
0 Folding the magnifier
By pressing down the base plate of the magnifier, the magnifier will hook in place.
Changing the Picture Format to Horizontal or Vertical
Operating the revolving adapter
Viewfield of horizontal or vertical format
When the horizontal format mark of the revolving adapter is facing upward, a horizontal format will result. To compose a vertical photograph. turn the revolving adapter clockwise until it stops. To change from vertical to horizontal, turn the revolving adapter counterclockwise. In either case, be sure to turn the adapter a full 90 until it clicks and stops. If the adapter is stopped midway, the shutter release button cannot be pressed. * Do NOT turn the revolving adapter while the shutter release button is being pressed. Especially, when a cable release or a selftimer is used, and adjustment of the release tip is improper, the shutter release button will remain depressed after the shutter is released. Always pay attention to this fact.
Horizontal picture format When the revolving adapter is positioned at the horizontal format, red lines appear on the ground glass focusing screen to indicate a horizontal picture format. Compose the picture within the red lines.
Vertical picture format When the revolving adapter is positioned in the vertical format, the red lines disappear. Compose the picture within the broken lines on both sides.
0 Attaching and Detaching the Roll Film Holder
Removing the rear body cap
Attaching the roll film holder
By moving the slide locks (29) on both sides fully to the left, the cap can be removed. * Never push the light baffle (26) on the camera back after removing the rear body cap. If the light baffle is pushed by force, it will cause light leakage or a malfunction.
1. Before attaching the holder, confirm that the upper and lower side slide locks (29) are on the left end of the indented portion when viewed from behind the camera body. NOTE: Should either slide lock be moved to the right while nothing is attached to the revolving adapter, the slide lock release lever (31) will engage and the slide lock will not move. II this happens, press the release lever (31) and return the slide lock to the open position.
2. Attach the roll film holder and slide both slide locks firmly in the direction of the arrow mark. (; If the slide lock of the revolving adapter is not pushed fully in or out, the shutter will not be released because of the shutter locking safety device. Always operate the slide lock securely. * If closing the lower slide lock is neglected, the safety device of the Pro-S holder will prevent the dark slide from being removed. * If the dark slide is completely inserted, or if the film is not loaded, the shutter release button cannot be pressed, leading to picture-taking failure.
Detaching the roll film holder
1. Insert a dark slide in the roll film holder. Two white lines on the side of the holder indicate the position of the inserting slit. 2. Remove the roll film holder by sliding both slide locks (29) in the opposite direction to the arrow mark on the slide lock. * If the dark slide is not inserted, the slide lock will be locked by the safety device, and the roll film holder cannot be detached. * When a dark slide is completely inserted, the slide lock release lever (31) is automatically disengaged, and the slide locks can be slid without pressing the release levers.
NOTE: Since a coupling device for double-exposure prevention is adapted for the Pro-S roll film holder, the shutter cannot be released if the film is not loaded.
When desiring to release the shutter without loading the film.
In this instance, the shutter can be released by sliding the multiexposure lever of the roll film holder to the front, and by setting the shutter cocking lever and pulling out the dark slide. + When the dark slide is completely inserted, the shutter release button cannot be pressed. Therefore, either remove the dark slide or draw it outward to a position where the entire triangular hole in the top center of the dark slide becomes visible. * Either operation of the multiexposure lever or the shutter cocking can be initially conducted.
Either film advancing or shutter cocking can initially conducted. However, the recommended sequence of these steps to be customarily observed is: (1) film advancing, (2) shutter cocking, and finally (3) shutter releasing.
0 Multiple Exposure Photography 0 When desiring to wind up to the end of film while unexposed film
remains in the holder.
When the film advance lever is continuously wound, with the film wind-stop release lever (42) pushed to the left, the film can be reeled up completely to its end, even though picture taking is still in progress and a film remains unexposed.
Storing the dark slide
W h e n t h e multiexposure lever of the roll film holder is moved forward, the coupling pin for double-exposure prevention is disengaged, and whenever the shutter cocking lever is set, shutter releasing can be repeated without limit. * The multiexposure lever can be changed over before or after shutter cocking, and also before or after shutter releasing for the first multiple exposure photograph. * When taking multiple exposure pictures is finished, never fail to return the multiexposure lever to its original position; otherwise, failure in taking subsequent multiple exposure pictures will occur. l
While progressing with photography, the dark slide of the roll film holder can be stored by inserting it into the camera body side.
Cl Setting the Shutter Speed and the Aperture
Setting the Shutter speed
0 Setting the aperture
Align the desired aperture value with the red dot on the center of the lens barrel. * Adopted for the aperture is a fully automatic diaphragm which stops down during shutter operation. * The aperture can be set at full and half click stops.
l Time Operation 1. By setting the shutter speed scale on T (time) and releasing the shutter, the shutter will remain open for an extended time exposure. 2. To close the shutter, turn the shutter speed ring toward the 1 sec. mark or press down the shutter cocking lever about 30? * Do not move the shutter cocking lever until just before closing the shutter. * When the shutter is closed by the shutter cocking lever, the light baffle in the camera body drops slightly lower; however, since it is an extended time exposure, fogging over the actual exposure does not occur. * When the shutter is closed by the shutter cocking lever, the lever is locked by the reverse motion stopper and does not return to its original position. When the shutter is cocked by further depressing the lever, the lever returns to its original position.
l Attaching and detaching the auto extension tubes Attaching and detaching the auto extension tubes is accomplished in the same manner as with the lens. When initially mounting a lens to the extension tube, cock both the lens and the tube. * The auto extension tubes couple with the automatic diaphragm of the lenses. NOTES 1. For exposure compensation, refer to the following table. Reading of the exposure compensation scale differs from that when not utilizing extension tubes. 2. For close-up photography, we recommend independent mirror-releasing prior to each actual photograph. This omits or minimizes any residual camera body movement due to mirror action.
3. When photographing through the extension tubes, use as small an aperture as possible. 4. When photographing in the 6 x 7 size, if the 127mm lens is used, minimal or no corner vignetting will occur, however, when using lenses other than the 127mm lens with two extension tubes (No. 1 and No. 2), the possibility of some vignetting in the four corners of the picture may occur. When using only one extension tube, no vignetting will occur with any lens. 5. When photographing with the Polaroid Land film pack, corner vignetting increases due to the larger picture size, however a 6 x 7cm portion in the center of the photo will be essentially clear of vignetting. 6. Use only one auto extension tube No. 1 for the 65mm lens.
0 Flash Photography

b M-X selection
Determining the aperture
The aperture setting for flash photography is determined by dividing the guide number of the bulb or the electronic flash unit by the distance.
(Guide number] 56 -(Aperture setting] 8 (Distance to subject) 7
Connect the cord of the flash unit to the synchroflash terminal (46).
Flash Synchronization Table
The M-X selecting lever is internally locked to prevent unintentional switching of the mode. When switching the M-X selector, move the lever to the right or left, until it reaches the end while pressing the lever against the lens barrel. The letter X or M, which indicates the contact type, should appear in the window. * When employing electronic flash, set the M-X selector to X to synchronize flash at any shutter speed. t When M-class flash bulbs are used, set the M-X selector to M to synchronize at any shutter speed. * When F-class flash bulbs are used, set the selector to X and photograph at 1/60 sec. or a slower shutter speed.
0 Mirror-up Photography (Independent Mirror Release)
l Photographing 1. On pressing the shutter release b u t t o n, the mirror and the light baffle will snap up, but the shutter will not be released. 2. R e l e a s e t h e s h u t t e r w i t h t h e c a b l e release. (When you do not have a cable release, simply return the mirror release Operating knob to the original position to release the shutter.) 3. By pulling out the knob and turning it counterclockwise, the mirror-up mechanism can be disengaged. * Even when picture-taking is switched to mirror-up photography, the mirror is set at each shutter cocking. Accordingly, it is possible to confirm the image on the finder screen prior to taking each picture. d For this type of photography, an ideal forked mirror-up cable release is available as an optional accessory. NOTE: Unless the mirror release operating knob is returned, the camera will remain set for mirror-up photography. In this case, the film will not be exposed even when the shutter release button is pressed.
In mirror-up photography, previously release the mirror and operate only the lens shutter at the moment of taking the photograph. This mirror-up photography is recommended When a tripod is employed and the shutter is released at slow speed, when taking close-up photos, or when using a telephoto lens, where avoidance of even a negligible shock is desired, or when curtailment of even a negligible time lag between pressing the shutter release button and the shutter opening is desired
l Preparations 1. Pull out the independent mirror release operating knob (50) and turn it clockwise, and align the red dot on the knob with the MIRROR UP indication dot. 2. Screw a cable release into the female
screw socket in the knob center. 3. By fully pressing down the shutter cock. ing lever, cock the shutter and the mirror. The sequence of foregoing procedures 1, 2, and 3 can be optionally altered.

This lens hood can be used commonly for the 90mm, 127mm. 180mm. and 250mm lenses. 1. Screw the attachment ring into the front of the Ions mount. 2. Pull the folded rubber hood straight out. using it as the hood for the 127mm. 180mm. and 250mm lenses. 3. For the 90mm lens, fold the hood back halfway To fold the hood, pull it straight out, place the hood on a flat surface, and push down from the top to easily fold the lens hood You can also leave the hood on the lens for portability by pushing back and turning out the hood while it is attached to the lens. A filter can be screwed in between the lens and the hood, or in front of the lens hood.
While holding both sides of the strap attaching metal, slide the attaching metal toward the hanging direction, after fitting and pressing the round hole o n the metal back side to the lug for strap on the camera body.
Note: Always attach and use the strap so that it and the strap attaching metal are straight. When changing the strap hanging direction, always reattach the strap. * If the strap attaching metal is connected to the accessory shoe side in reverse, detaching will be difficult.
Detaching
Holding the camera by the strap
Three hanging positions
Depending on the attached position of the strap, there are three hanging positions for the strap as illustrated in the photos. Since the strap attaching lug is not rotary, the strap will never become twisted.
T O detach the strap, slide the a t t a c h i n g m e t a l in r e v e r s e direction to attaching, while slightly raising the leaf spring on the attaching metal with a finger tip.
After adjusting the length of the carrying strap, pass your left hand through the strap, and while stretching the strap down from your neck, hold the camera with your left hand. The camera can be held lightly, easily, and securely in this manner.

While holding both side panels of the focusing hood to prevent lowering of the magnifier base plate, turn the magnifier counterclockwise, and at the point where the white dot on the magnifier becomes aligned with the while dot on the base plate, remove the magnifier. After aligning the magnifier white dot with the base plate white dot, mount another magnifier by turning it clockwise. * In addition to the standard (-1.3) diopter lens, available are +1, 0, -1, - 2, and -3 diopter lenses (six in total].
While pressing the focusing hood latch (9), slide the nameplate (8) to the right as viewed from the front, and remove the focusing hood while slightly raising its front portion.
Insert the two prongs (21) on the back of the hood into the slots on the camera body, and while pressing the hood front portion toward the camera body, return the nameplate to Its original position. The latch will pop out and the hood will be locked automatically.
Cl Focusing Screen
q Revolving Adapter
Five types of easily exchangeable focusing screens are available to meet various photographing applications. 0 Attaching and detaching First remove the focusing hood, then take out the focusing screen while holding both sides. To attach it, hold each side and insert the focusing screen into the top of the camera body and press down lightly. NOTE: When the focusing screen has been detached, do not touch the picture format indicating red dot on the side of the camera body.
To detach the revolving adapter, pull out and down on the R-lock lever (28) at the bottom of the camera body. To attach the revolving adapter to the camera body, face the white index dot on the adapter toward the top of the camera body, and fully push the R-lock lever up, while firmly pressing the adapter toward the camera body.
I When attaching the revolving adapter, press it firmly so that it is attached tightly and never comes loose. If the adapter is attached somewhat loosely, it will cause light leakage. x: The revolving adapter of the Pro-S is not applicable to the former RB67. * Since the revolving adapter for the former RB67 has no interlocking mechanisms (such as a double-exposure preventive device, a horizontal picture format marking device, and a safety device f o r p r e v e n t i n g t h e shutter from releasing when the dark slide is i n s e r t e d ). d o n o t e m p l o y it w i t h t h e Pro-S bbdy.
When desiring to pull out the dark slide of the roll film holder which has been removed from the body
Releasing the lens shutter which has been removed from the body
Shutter testing when the film is loaded
When the roll film holder for the Pro-S is removed from the body, the safety device prevents its dark slide from being pulled out carelessly or accidentally. However, if you desire to pull it out, it can be pulled out by using your fingernail tip to press the dark slide lock release lever (40) on the bottom of the outer cassette.
It is advisable to release the shutter when the lens is not to be used for a long period. To release a lens shutter which is removed from the camera body, turn the cocking pins (56) clockwise, while pressing the shutter lock pin (55) with a finger. The cocking pins should be turned all the way; do NOT leave the pins turned only halfway.
When the shutter is cocked, the dark slide is slightly pulled out (approx. 1/4 in.) and the shutter release button is pressed, the shutter can be released without exposing the film in the roll film holder to light. This operation can be utilized for shutter testing prior to photographing. * When pulling out the dark slide. stop pulling at a point where the entire triangular hole on the dark slide becomes visible. If the shutter is released when the dark slide is pulled out beyond that hole, the film will be exposed to light. * When the shutter is released, a red mark appears on the exposure counter. * When taking the first photograph subsequent to this test, cock the shutter in the multiexposure condition, and pull out the dark slide. For taking pictures following the first one, restore the multiexposure lever to its normal position and continue photographing.
When the lens is installed on the camera while the mirror and the shutter are not set.
Lens installation is possible even if the mirror and/or the shutter are/is not set; however, operation shown in the table must be followed to obtain a normal set condition. In this case, do not pull out the dark slide of the film holder until the camera is set to a normal condition. However, when the shutter release button is necessarily pressed with the roll film holder attached, as shown in 1 of the table, move the multiexposure lever forward and slightly pull out the dark slide, and then press the shutter release button.
