lthough a big screen does not always guarantee performance, this Toshiba delivers in spades. For starters, the SD-P2600 features the most attractive styling of the bunch. An angular base is contoured to fit black speaker panels, which flank the units expansive display. Be aware that this design does add width. The SD-P2600 easily had the most impressive picture quality of the models reviewed here. Thanks to its higher resolution, active matrix TFT, DVD playback is crisp and colorful. Universals WARNING screen at the start of Hulk was rock solid, and text was perfectly legible. The same could not be said for any other unit in this roundup. Film scenes exhibited no visible shimmer and motion artifacts were practically nonexistent. Automatic 4:3/16:9 sensing is a unique and welcome feature. Much like its video performance, sound from the SD-P2600 is among the best of the
bunch. Every portable sounds tinny and thin (some more than others); this unit (and the Sharper Image PEC) offers the least compromise if youre not wearing headphones. Its a bit expensive, but oh, so worth it.

porting a seven-inch display, the SDP1400 is the smaller of the two Toshiba models. Thankfully, its price is also smaller. The SD-P1400 holds the distinction of being the only unit I reviewed that was not entirely silver. The interior of the unit is solid black, which makes for fewer distracting reflections during night viewing. Picture quality on the SD-P1400 was average. Some shimmer and stair-stepping artifacts were visible during the early chapters of Hulk, but color saturation and brightness were both acceptable. Sound quality was slightly above average for the group, but youll want to take advantage of the units dual headphone jacks. Though it doesnt say so in the manual, I was able to play a DVD+R disc with the SDP1400. Oddly enough, I couldnt do this with the pricier SD-P2600. The graphical menu in-
terface was above average and well laid-out. Ergonomics were generally excellent, although I found Rew/FF to be a bit frustrating when not using the remote. Though only offering average performance, the SD-P1400 is a stylish alternative with an attractive price tag.
