In 1964, several engineers and middle managers at a Japanese industrial company believed that they could redesign the industrial serger they were currently manufacturing to be smaller and lighter. Their company rejected the concept, but the team was so committed to their idea that they quit their job and formed their own company. Evolve Serger Lace Bonnet

Baby Lock Project: Evolve Serger Lace Bonnet Page 1 of 5
Serger Lace construction: 1. Cut two pieces of Dissolve-Away Mesh and one piece of bridal tulle 8 X 16. 2. Make a sandwich with the bridal tulle between the two layers of wash away, using temporary spray adhesive to keep the tulle from shifting. 3. Decide on the grid design for your bonnet. Using a ruler, mark the lines of your grid on the top layer of wash away with a water soluble pen. Use diamonds or squares because straight lines will work better than curves. Draw your grid with about 2 in between each guide line.
4. Thread your Baby Lock Evolve with Maxi-lock serger thread in the needle and YLI jeans stitch thread in the chain looper. Use the C3 needle on the Evolve for more space between your stitching lines. Start with the machine settings on a stitch length of 2 and the chain looper tension on about the 6th dashed line. The needle tension should be on 5. Start with these settings and adjust if necessary. 5. Starting in roughly the middle of the tulle sandwich, use one of the drawn lines as your stitching line. You will need to roll the fabric up on the end so that it will feed easier through the opening in the serger. After stitching your first chain stitch, use the left hand edge of your presser foot to line up each consecutive stitching line and stitch the whole width of the fabric. Your stitching lines will be approximately inch apart. If you want more space between the lines, you will need to draw all the lines to stitch on top of. Once you have gone completely to one side, turn the fabric around and finish to the other edge. After stitching all lines in that direction, stitch the grid going the other direction so you will create a stitched grid. You may need to use the extra lines that you drew to straighten your lines up as you go along. The right side of the lace will be the needle thread side. Do not wash it out yet. Wait until you are completely finished with the bonnet. 6. Trim down your completed serger lace rectangle to 6 x 14, cleaning off all the rough edges. Bonnet construction: 1. Set up your Evolve for a 4 thread overlock with a stitch length of 4, stitch width on M and the differential feed on 2 for ruffling the brim of the bonnet. Cut a piece of batiste 2 X 28 inches and stitch along one edge. Do not pull the gathers up yet. 2. Change your Evolve to a 3 thread rolled hem with a stitch length of 2R, stitch width on M and stitch selector on D. Using the lace applicator foot, apply the lace to the lower edge of the batiste leaving a couple of inches of the lace hanging over the edge of both ends for mitering the corners.

3. Using the 3 thread rolled hem setting, apply the entredeaux to one long side of the serger lace right sides together. Pull the needle threads on the gathered side of the ruffle and match it to the length of the bonnet and entredeaux. Sew it to the opposite side, right sides together.
4. For the side pieces of edging lace, you will need it several inches longer than the bonnet and ruffle for mitering the corners. Attach it to edges with the 3 thread rolled hem, right sides together, stopping at the corner edge of the ruffle where it meets the edging lace.
5. To miter the corners of the ruffle, fold the ruffle and match the lace on top of each other right sides together to form a corner. You will then trim away the lace diagonally about from where the seam line will be. Now starting from the fabric corner of the ruffle, serge the rolled hem from the inside to outside corner, mitering the corners. Apply fray block to the ends of the rolled hems and clip off the excess.

6. Cut a piece of batiste 2 X 17 long for the casing along the back of the bonnet. Fold the piece of fabric in half so it measures 1 X17. With your serger set up for a 4 thread overlock with your stitch width set on M to achieve a seam, serge this casing raw edges together to the right side of the bonnet at the back edge. Turn the ends to the inside to have a finished edge on the edges and turn the folded edge of casing to the bottom. Now use your Baby Lock sewing machine to attach the folded edge of the casing to the bonnet by stitching in the ditch. The construction is now complete, so you can wash out the water soluble stabilizer.
7. With a large eyed needle, run the ribbon for the ties through the casing and in the middle of the casing; sew a short stitch to tack down the ribbon so it cant be pulled out. Attach the tie ribbon to the front of the bonnet for the under the neck ties and you are done. Pull the ribbon at the back of the bonnet to fit.
