Design the Front Cover
Create the Buttonhole Band
Touch the Module Icon to go into sewing Attach any 9mm Foot Select the Buttonhole Menu and Buttonhole #51 Set the Slit Width to 1.0 and press the Check to confirm Set the Width of the Buttonhole to 5.0 Set the Length of Buttonhole to maximum (27/29 mm) and press Check to confirm Touch the Module Icon to return to embroidery Select New Motif > My Designs Folder and select the Buttonhole Select the Oval Hoop Select the Rescale Motif Width and Length icon and only adjust the length to 40mm (the Stitch Length knob will read 136%) Rotate 90 Select Endless Embroidery Adjust the Stitch Width Knob for 8 repeats Adjust the Stitch Length Knob to space the buttonholes 18mm apart Deactivate the reference marks and confirm (green check) Rotate 90 so the band is horizontal The width of the band should measure 164-168mm adjust the Rescale Motif Width and Length icon if necessary using the Stitch Width knob Duplicate and move away from first row of stitches Delete each buttonhole of the first row Save the Design.
Create the Quilt Motif
Select New Motif > My Designs Folder Diane Gaudynski Design #12 Select the Jumbo Hoop Duplicate and mirror image left/right Touch the move motif 2 times to center Move the second design 1182 to the left (Move design so the stems and centers intersect) Touch the Retrieve Icon to select all objects and press the Move Motif to Center With both objects selected, Rescale to 80% (approximately 200mm in width) Duplicate and delete the original quilt motif Save the design.

Create Imported Stitch Border
Touch the Module Icon to go into sewing Select the Decorative Stitch Menu and Menu #801 Select Stitch #819 Set Pattern Repeat to 4 Touch the module icon to go to embroidery Select New Motif > My Designs Folder and select the Imported Stitch Select the Jumbo Hoop Rotate 270 Duplicate and Center Design Mirror Image top/bottom and move so baselines almost touch (-255) Select all and duplicate Delete the first string of motifs Save the design.
Putting it all Together
Select New Motif > My Designs Folder and select the Buttonhole Band Add the Quilt Pattern and move above the buttonhole band Add the Imported Stitch border and move below the buttonhole band Duplicate the stitch border and center Move the band below the first band.
Select the Add Icon and Alphabet Menu Add 2 initials from the King Charles Alphabet 1 in lower case Position in the center of the quilt pattern Add the word designs from the King Charles Alphabet 1 in lower case Activate Word Art and adjust the spacing to 55 using the stitch width knob and arc the lettering so the lettering sits on the curve of the quilt design (adjust Stitch Length knob to 100) Rotate 10% if necessary to balance the word.

Create Color Stop for the Buttonholes
As is, the stitches and the buttonholes are the same color on screen. They will be stitched with different thread colors. To change a screen color and force a color stop, use the color bar. When colors are later resequenced, the buttonholes and stitch border will be able to be sewn with different colors. Select the Retrieve Icon to select all of the design (and see the buttonhole color is the same as the stitch band) Select retrieve until only the Buttonhole band is active Touch the Thread Spool (Color Number) icon Touch the color bar and scroll to select a color not already in the design combination such as dark pewter #132 Press the Color Bar Right Scroll Arrow to advance to the next buttonhole and select dark pewter Continue until all the colors of the buttonholes are changed Close the Color Number icon by touching the spool Save the Design, it is ready to be embroidered.
Embroidering the Front Cover
Hoop 1 layer of stabilizer, batting and Gray Fabric Attach Hoop to Machine Activate the basting box around the design Size 80/90 Jeans needle Slide on Table attached Thread the machine during embroidery as follows: Use Black thead top and bobbin for Buttonholes (optionaluse 30wt thread for the needle for a heavier fill for the buttonholes). 60wt black thread in the bobbin. Red Cotton 30 wt needle and red 60wt bobbin for the quilt designs and the imported stitch border Black Isacord and black 60wt bobbin thread for the lettering Activate the Resequence Icon to change the number of color changes from 17 to 5 Remove from Hoop and trim 1/2 around the basting box Cut the buttonholes open with the buttonhole cutter and block.
BERNINA 830 Jumbo Hoop
The newest BERNINA hoop is made for extra-large embroidery designs, large design combinations and borders. The new opening and closing mechanism makes it so easy to hoop the fabric. The maximum embroidery area is 40 x 26 cm. It can be totally used without rotating the hoop. This large hoop is especially made for the BERNINA 830.

Sewing the Back Cover
Cut black fabric, batting and stabilizer the same size as the trimmed front piece Seam front and back at spine with a 1/2 seam using the BERNINA Dual Feed with Foot #1D Thread the ribbon through the buttonholes Stitch the Ribbon to the back using the BERNINA Dual Feed Foot #1D and the Straight Stitch.
Align Foot #1D Center Mark to the edge of the ribbon and select stitch #657 and stitch from the spine out stopping 1 1/2 from edge. Activate Auto Secure as you approach the stopping point. Mirror Image the stitch and sew the opposite side from spine to edge Select Stitch #672 and stitch guiding the edge of the foot to the edge of the ribbon and mirror imaging the stitch for the second side. Select Stitch #676 Stitch down the center of ribbon.
Bobbin Play with the BERNINA Stitch Regulator
Machine Setup Consult the on-board Tutorial > Techniques > Bobbin play for on-screen guidance. Remove bobbin and set aside Wind an empty Bobbin with heavy thread Adjust the bobbin tension using the multifunction tool When the bobbin case is out, hold the case and rotate the hand wheel until the post has enough space around it to be adjusted with the tool Place the tool on the post and move the post 2 clicks to the left to loosen Close the bobbin door to allow the bobbin case to reset its position and open the door to insert the bobbin Thread the heavy thread through the slit and toward the cutter to properly seat itself, but do not cut on the cutter Leave a 2-3 thread tail and close the door

Thread machine with Isacord or PolySheen in a color that matches the heavy decorative thread in the bobbin Attach the BERNINA Stitch Regulator and plug it in Select straight stitch and sew in the open area below the ribbon (optionalcover the back except for the ribbon) Place your work pretty side to the feed dogs Use the hand wheel to bring the thread tail up Select the mode you are most comfortable with and fill in the area below the decorative stitching rows Use the Start/Stop button on the head frame as well as the foot control When finished, return machine to original settings.
Finishing the Book Cover
Trim and square edges Cut Lining and flap pockets Press each flap pocket in half Lay book cover face up, lay flaps on top with the fold of the flap facing the book spine, and lay the lining face down. Attach BERNINA Dual Feed Foot #37D and the engage the BERNINA Dual Feed and stitch around the cover leaving an opening to turn
Trim corners and Turn Edgestitch with BERNINA Dual Feed Foot #10D and an altered needle position all the way around and while closing the gap Insert the Composition Book and tie the ribbon ENJOY!

Design the Banner Embroidery

Steps to create Snowflake #1 - Embroidery

Putting the Design Elements Together Lettering

Add Embroidery Motifs
Add Motif >Designs Folder >Louisa Meyer Design #30 Mirror Horizontalside/side Move motif to lower left in hoop and nestle lettering above the snowflake to the right of the S scroll. Add Snowflake #1 and move the left of LO lettering Rotate 31 Add Snowflake #2 and move to right of ELC lettering Rotate 18 Add Snowflake #3 and move to right of M lettering Rotate 15.

Import Stitches to Embroidery
Touch the Module Icon to go into sewing Select the Decorative Stitch Menu and Menu #101 Select stitch #170 Touch the module icon to go to embroidery Add New Motif from My Designs Folder select stitch #170 Resize to 170% Move above Snowflake #1 Duplicate and move into position create 6 duplicates. Position tiny snowflakes with consideration of stitching order.
Thread Changes of Snowflake Spokes
As is, the stitches or spokes of each snowflake are different colors onscreen and the same color can be seen in all three snowflakes. To change a screen color so the all are the same use the color bar. When colors are later re-sequenced, the snowflakes will be able to be sewn easily with one color.
Select the Retrieve Icon to select all of the design (and see the snowflake colors) Select retrieve until only the first spoke of Snowflake #1 is active Touch the Thread Spool (Color Number) icon Touch the color bar and scroll to select a color not already in the design combination such as Ice Cap #3650 Press the Color Bar Right Scroll Arrow to advance to the next spoke and select Ice Cap #3650 Continue until all the colors of the three snowflakes spokes are changed Close the Color Number icon by touching the spool Save the Design, it is ready to be embroidered.
Embroidering the Banner Front
Size 80/90 Jeans needle Slide on Table attached Thread the machine during embroidery as follows: Use Isacord thread top and 60wt bobbin thread in the bobbin. Hoop 1 layer of stabilizer, batting and Blue Fabric Attach Hoop to Machine Activate the Re-sequence Icon to change the number of color changes from 57 to 5 Stitch design Remove from Hoop and trim and size to 14 x 21.

Sewing It All Together Fabric Accent Strip
Attach using the BERNINA Dual Feed Foot #1D move the needle position 3 places to the right of center. Place the 2 1/2 wide accent fabric strip at top of banner with one raw edge even with top edge. Straight stitch fabric strip to banner, guiding the toe of the presser foot along other long raw edge.
Thread machine with Isacord thread to match the ribbon. Attach Dual Feed Edgestitch Foot #10D. Position ribbon over the raw edge of accent strip. Align the center guide of the foot to the edge of the ribbon, move the needle 2 positions to the left of center. Using a straight stitch, edgestitch on both sides of ribbon. Repeat for second piece of ribbon, place 1 1/2 from the lower edge of banner.
Decorative Sideways Motion Stitch
Attach 40C Sideways Motion Foot Thread machine with Isacord #3962 pale blue Select Stitch #1045 Use the Start/Stop button to begin stitching down the center of ribbon guiding the fabric but allowing the machine do move fabric in a sideway motion to form stitch.
Stitching Front to Back
Attach #57D Dual Feed Patchwork Foot Layer front and back RST, stitch around the entire rectangle using the guide of the foot to sew 1/4 seam allowance.
Quick Finishing Trick
Make a 4 slit in the middle of the backing only Trim the corners and carefully turn ride sides out Press edges. To close the slit opening ,cut a strip of fusible web a little longer than the length of the opening and 3/4 wide. Place strip inside opening, paper side up, align placement with opening. Press. Peel off the paper, position fabric over slit and press to adhere all the layers and close the opening.

Embroider Buttonholes for Dowel Carriers
Hoop a piece of UltraClean and Tear stabilizer in large oval hoop and spray with temporary spray adhesive. Fold banner in half lengthwise to locate the center. Position top of banner hoop Switch to embroidery and open the saved buttonhole band motif. Attach #26 Embroidery Foot Attach the hoop to machine Use Absolute Check to check placement of buttonholes and move as needed Select the basting box around the perimeter of the design and embroider Remove from hoop and tear away excess stabilizer and cut open buttonholes.
Edgestitch with BERNINA Dual Feed Foot #10D and an altered needle position all the way around the perimeter of the banner. Attach Fringe Trim to the bottom of the banner below the embellished ribbon. Position the ribbon and the fringe on either side of the center guide of the #10D Edgestitch foot. Move needle position 3 to the right of center. Stitch, turn the fringe trim ends to the back at the beginning and ending of the stitching. Enjoy!
