| Great phone, comes in for a lot of unnecessary stick. I think this phone comes in for a lot of unnecessary stick. Disappointing product, Beware! A good looking, if excessively weighty handset. My main complaints are the irritatingly illogical. | |

Emergency calls
About emergency calls
If you are outside of a wireless coverage area and the SOS wireless coverage indicator appears, you can only call emergency numbers. Your BlackBerry device is designed to allow emergency calls even when your device is locked. Depending on your device model and the wireless network that your device is connected to, your device is also designed to allow emergency calls when the SIM card is not inserted. If the connection to the wireless network is turned off when you initiate an emergency call, your device is designed to connect to the wireless network automatically. You can only make emergency calls by typing official emergency access numbers (for example, 911 or 112). Note: You should not rely on any wireless device for essential communications, including medical emergencies. Emergency numbers may vary by location and emergency calls may be blocked or impeded by network, environmental, or interference issues.
About Emergency Callback Mode
If your BlackBerry device is connected to a CDMA network, when you end an emergency call, your device enters Emergency Callback Mode. This mode enables the operator to call you back or determine your approximate location. Depending on your wireless service provider, Emergency Callback Mode is active for five minutes or is canceled when you make a non-emergency call. In Emergency Callback Mode, you cannot send and receive messages or browse web pages. Your device exits Emergency Callback Mode at any time if you make a non-emergency call.

If your device does not have an internal GPS receiver or your wireless service provider does not support location-based services and you want to use GPS technology, you can pair your BlackBerry device with a Bluetooth enabled GPS receiver. For more information, contact your wireless service provider. If your device is connected to a CDMA network and you make an emergency call or your device is in Emergency Callback Mode, an emergency operator might be able to use GPS technology to estimate your location. Specific absorption rate data
THIS WIRELESS DEVICE MODEL MEETS GOVERNMENT REQUIREMENTS FOR EXPOSURE TO RADIO WAVES WHEN USED AS DIRECTED IN THIS SECTION. The BlackBerry device is a radio transmitter and receiver. It is designed and manufactured not to exceed the emission limits for exposure to radio frequency (RF) energy set by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) of the U.S. Government, Industry Canada of the Canadian Government (IC), and recommended by The Council of the European Union when used as directed in the previous section. These limits are part of
comprehensive guidelines and establish permitted levels of RF energy for the general population. The guidelines are based on standards that were developed by independent scientific organizations through periodic and thorough evaluation of scientific studies. The exposure standard for wireless devices employs a unit of measurement known as the Specific Absorption Rate, or SAR. The SAR limit set by the FCC/IC is 1.6W/kg*. The SAR limit recommended by The Council of the European Union is 2.0W/kg**. Tests for SAR are conducted using standard operating positions specified by the FCC/IC with the device transmitting at its highest certified power level in all tested frequency bands. Although the SAR is determined at the highest certified power level, the actual SAR level of the device while operating can be well below the maximum value. This is because the device is designed to operate at multiple power levels so as to use only the power required to reach the network. In general, the closer you are to a wireless base station antenna, the lower the power output. Before a wireless device model is available for sale to the public, it must be tested and certified to the FCC, IC, and The Council of the European Union that it does not exceed the limit established by the government-adopted requirement for safe exposure under the recommendations of the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP). The tests are performed in positions and locations (for example, at the ear and worn on the body) as required by the FCC, IC, and The Council of the European Union for each model. The highest SAR value for your BlackBerry device model when tested for use at the ear is outlined as follows:
Device BlackBerry Stormsmartphone BlackBerry Stormsmartphone
SAR (W/kg) for 1g 0.97 1.01
SAR (W/kg) for 10g 1.02 0.92
The highest reported SAR value for this BlackBerry device when clipped on a belt, in a Research In Motion approved holster equipped with an integrated belt clip, is outlined below. Carrying solutions, including RIM approved carrying solutions and carrying solutions not approved by RIM, that do not come equipped with an
integrated belt clip SHOULD NOT be worn or carried on the body. For more information regarding the wearing or carrying of this BlackBerry device without using a RIM approved carrying solution equipped with an integrated belt clip, see the holster information in the "Additional safety guidelines" section of this document.
SAR (W/kg) for 1g 0.60 0.63
SAR (W/kg) for 10g 0.53 0.45
Body-worn measurements differ among wireless device and phone models, depending upon available accessories and FCC, IC, and The Council of the European Union requirements. The FCC has granted an Equipment Authorization for this wireless device model with all reported SAR levels evaluated as in compliance with the FCC RF emission guidelines when the BlackBerry device is used as directed in this section. SAR information on this wireless device model is on file with the FCC and can be found under the Display Grant section of www.fcc.gov/oet/ea after searching for the FCC ID for your device listed below. Additional information on SAR can be found on the CTIA - The Wireless Association web site at www.ctia.org. In Japan, additional information on SAR can be found on the Association of Radio Industries and Businesses (ARIB) web site at www.arib-emf.org/index.html, or on the Telecommunications Bureau of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) web site at www.tele.soumu.go.jp/e/index.htm.

* In the United States and Canada, the SAR limit for mobile devices used by the public is 1.6 watts/kg (W/kg) averaged over 1 g of tissue for the body or head (4.0 W/kg averaged over 10 g of tissue for the extremities hands, wrists, ankles, and feet). ** In Europe, the SAR limit for mobile devices used by the public is 2.0 watts/kg (W/kg) averaged over 10 g of tissue for the body or head (4.0 W/kg averaged over 10 g of tissue for the extremities - hands, wrists, ankles, and feet). Studies suggest that the standard incorporates a substantial margin of safety to give additional protection for the public and to account for any variations in measurements. The long-term characteristics or the possible physiological effects of Radio Frequency Electromagnetic fields have not been evaluated by Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL).

US Information Concerning the Federal Communications Commission ("FCC") Requirements for Hearing Aid Compatibility with Wireless Devices
When wireless devices are used near hearing devices (such as hearing aids and cochlear implants), users may detect a buzzing, humming, or whining noise. Some hearing devices are more immune than others to this interference, and wireless devices also vary in the amount of interference that they generate. The wireless telephone industry has developed ratings to assist hearing device users in finding wireless devices that may be compatible with their hearing devices. Not all wireless devices have been rated. Wireless devices that are rated will have the rating displayed on the box together with other relevant approval markings. The ratings are not guarantees. Results will vary depending on the user's hearing device and hearing loss. If your hearing device is vulnerable to interference, you may not be able to use a rated wireless device successfully. Consulting with your hearing health professional and testing the wireless device with your hearing device is the best way to evaluate it for your personal needs. This BlackBerry device has been tested and rated for use with hearing aids for some of the wireless technologies that the BlackBerry device uses. However, other wireless technologies may be used in this BlackBerry device that have not been tested for use with hearing aids. It is important to try the different features of your
BlackBerry device thoroughly and in different locations to determine if you hear any interfering noise when using this BlackBerry device with your hearing aid or cochlear implant. Consult your wireless service provider about its return and exchange policies and for information about hearing aid compatibility. How the ratings work M-Ratings: Wireless devices rated M3 or M4 meet FCC requirements and are likely to generate less interference to hearing devices than wireless devices that are not labeled. M4 is the better or higher of the two ratings. T-Ratings: Wireless devices rated T3 or T4 meet FCC requirements and are likely to be more usable with a hearing device's telecoil ("T Switch" or "Telephone Switch") than unrated wireless devices. T4 is the better or higher of the two ratings. (Note that not all hearing devices have telecoils in them.) Hearing devices may also be measured for immunity to this type of interference. Your hearing device manufacturer or hearing health professional may help you find results for your hearing device. The more immune your hearing aid is, the less likely you are to experience interference noise from wireless devices. For more information about the actions that the FCC has taken with regard to hearing aid compatibility with wireless devices and other steps that the FCC has taken to ensure that individuals with disabilities have access to telecommunications services, visit www.fcc.gov/cgb/dro.
