Introduction
1. Introduction
You can use the Nokia Bluetooth Headset BH-501 to listen to music with your compatible music player and make and answer calls with your compatible mobile phone. The music player can be the music player feature of your phone or a separate music playing device. Read this user guide carefully before using the headset. Also read the user guide for your phone, which provides important safety and maintenance information, and the user guide for your music playing device. Keep the headset out of reach of small children.
Bluetooth wireless technology
The headset can be connected to a compatible mobile phone or music player that supports Bluetooth wireless technology. This technology makes it possible to connect compatible communication devices without cables. In a Bluetooth connection, the headset and the other device should be within 10 meters (30 feet) of each other. Connections can be subject to interference from obstructions, such as walls, or other electronic devices. This headset is compliant with Bluetooth Specification 1.2 supporting the following profiles: Headset Profile 1.1, Handsfree Profile 1.0, and Advanced Audio Distribution Profile 1.0. Check with the manufacturers of other devices to determine their compatibility with this device. There may be restrictions on using Bluetooth technology in some locations. Check with your local authorities or service provider.
Get started
2. Get started
The headset contains the following parts: Volume down key (1) Volume up key (2) Charger socket (3) Indicator light (4) Microphone (5) Multifunction key (6)
Before using the headset, you must charge the battery and pair the headset with a compatible phone. If your phone does not have a music player feature, you also need to pair the headset with your music player.
Note: Parts of the headset are magnetic. Metallic materials may be attracted to the headset. Do not place credit cards or other magnetic storage media near the headset, because information stored on them may be erased.
Chargers
Check the model number of any charger before use with this device. The headset is intended for use with the AC-3, AC-4, and DC-4 chargers. Warning: Use only chargers approved by Nokia for use with this particular enhancement. The use of any other types may invalidate any approval or warranty, and may be dangerous. For availability of approved enhancements, please check with your dealer. When you disconnect the power cord of any enhancement, grasp and pull the plug, not the cord.
Charge the battery
This headset has an internal, nonremovable, rechargeable battery. Do not attempt to remove the battery from the device as you may damage the headset. 5
1. Connect the charger to a wall outlet. 2. Connect the charger cable to the headset. The indicator light is red during charging. If the indicator light is not red, check the charger connection. If charging does not start, disconnect the charger, plug it in again, and retry. Charging the battery fully may take up to 3 hours. When the battery is fully charged, the indicator light turns blue. 3. Disconnect the charger from the headset and wall outlet. The fully charged battery has power for up to 7.5 hours of talk-time and music playing time, and up to 150 hours of standby time. However, the times may vary when used with different mobile phones or other compatible Bluetooth devices, usage settings, usage styles, and environments. When battery power is low, the headset beeps each minute, and the indicator light flashes red. Recharge the battery.
Switch the headset on or off
To switch on, press and hold the multifunction key until you hear a beep and the indicator light starts to flash blue. To connect the headset to the paired phone or music player that you have last used with it, press the multifunction key. For more information, see Reconnect the headset, p. 8. To switch off, press and hold the multifunction key until you hear a long beep.
Pair the headset
Pair with a phone with music player feature
If your phone has a compatible music player feature, you can use the headset to make and answer calls and listen to music from the phone. 6
1. Switch on your phone. 2. Ensure that the headset is off. If it is on, switch it off. 3. Press and hold the multifunction key until the indicator light alternately flashes blue and red. 4. Activate the Bluetooth feature on the phone, and set the phone to search for Bluetooth devices. See the user guide of your phone for instructions. 5. Select the headset (Nokia BH-501) from the list of found devices. 6. Your phone should ask for a Bluetooth passcode. Enter the passcode (0000) on your phone. In some phones you may need to make the Bluetooth connection separately after pairing. You only need to pair the headset with your phone once. If the pairing is successful and the headset is connected with your phone, the indicator light of the headset flashes blue slowly.
Pair with a phone and a music player
If your phone does not have a compatible music player feature, you can separately pair the headset with your phone and a compatible music player. After pairing and connecting the headset with your phone, do as follows: 1. Switch off the headset. 2. Switch on the music player. 3. Press and hold the multifunction key until the indicator light alternately flashes blue and red. 4. Follow the pairing instructions in the user guide for your music player. When the music player asks for a device to pair, select Nokia BH-501 from the list. If you are asked for a Bluetooth passcode, enter 0000 on the music player. If your music player does not have a keypad, the device may use the Bluetooth passcode 0000 by default. If this is not the case, see the user guide of your music player to change the default Bluetooth passcode to 0000.
If the pairing is successful and the headset is connected with your music player, the indicator light of the headset flashes blue slowly. To connect the headset also to your phone, make the connection from your phone as described in its user guide.
Disconnect the headset
To disconnect the headset from your phone or music player, switch off the headset, or follow the instructions in the user guide for your phone or music player. You do not need to delete the pairing with the headset to disconnect it.
Reconnect the headset
You can pair the headset with up to ten phones and music players in total but connect it to only one device at a time. To connect the headset to the paired phone or music player that you have last used with it, switch on the headset and press the multifunction key. To connect the headset to some other paired phone or music player, follow the instructions in the user guide for the phone or music player. If you have a Nokia phone, you can set it to connect with the headset automatically when the headset is switched on. On your Nokia phone, change your paired device settings in the Bluetooth menu.
Basic use
3. Basic use
Place the headset over the ears
Lower the headband behind your head. Place the headset over your ears so that the speaker pads fit comfortably.
Warning: When using the headset your ability to hear outside sounds may be affected. Do not use the headset where it can endanger your safety.
Adjust the volume
Press the volume up key to increase or the volume down key to decrease the volume during a call or while listening to music.
Call handling
To make a call when the headset is connected to the phone, use your phone in the normal way. If your phone supports last number redialing with this device, press the multifunction key twice briefly while no call is in progress. If your phone supports voice dialing with this device, press the multifunction key when no call is in progress, and proceed as instructed in the user guide of your phone. To answer a call, press the multifunction key, or use the phone keys. To reject the call, press and hold either volume key until the headset beeps twice. To end a call, press the multifunction key, or use the phone keys. To switch the call from the headset to the phone, press and hold either volume key. To switch the call back from the phone to the headset, press the multifunction key, or use the respective function in your phone.
Listen to music
To listen to music, the headset must be connected to a phone that has a compatible music player feature or to a separate music player. When the headset is connected to a phone but not to a music player, the headset can only be used to make and answer calls if the phone does not have a compatible music player feature. The available music functions depend on your music player. If you answer or make a call while listening to the music player, the music pauses until you end the call. To start and control the music playback, use the keys in your music player. For details, see the user guide for your music player.
Warning: Listen to music at a moderate level. Continuous exposure to high volume may damage your hearing.
Clear the settings
To clear the pairing and volume settings, switch off the headset, and press and hold either volume key until the indicator light starts to alternately flash blue and red. Press and hold the volume key until the headset beeps twice. Recharge the headset for a few seconds.
Battery information
4. Battery information
Your device is powered by a rechargeable battery. The battery can be charged and discharged hundreds of times, but it will eventually wear out. Recharge your battery only with Nokia approved chargers designated for this device. Unplug the charger from the electrical plug and the device when not in use. Do not leave the device connected to a charger, since overcharging may shorten the battery lifetime. If left unused, a fully charged battery will lose its charge over time. Use the battery only for its intended purpose. Never use any charger or battery that is damaged. Leaving the device in hot or cold places, such as in a closed car in summer or winter conditions, will reduce the capacity and lifetime of the battery. Always try to keep the battery between 15C and 25C (59F and 77F). A device with a hot or cold battery may not work temporarily, even when the battery is fully charged. Battery performance is particularly limited in temperatures well below freezing. Do not dispose of batteries in a fire as they may explode. Batteries may also explode if damaged. Dispose of batteries according to local regulations. Please recycle when possible. Do not dispose as household waste.
Care and maintenance
Your device is a product of superior design and craftsmanship and should be treated with care. The suggestions below will help you protect your warranty coverage. Keep all accessories and enhancements out of the reach of small children. Keep the device dry. Precipitation, humidity and all types of liquids or moisture can contain minerals that will corrode electronic circuits. If your device does get wet, allow the device to dry completely. Do not attempt to remove the battery from the device. Nokia recommends to take it to the nearest authorized service facility for replacement of the battery. Do not use or store the device in dusty, dirty areas. Its moving parts and electronic components can be damaged. Do not store the device in hot areas. High temperatures can shorten the life of electronic devices, damage batteries, and warp or melt certain plastics. Do not store the device in cold areas. When the device returns to its normal temperature, moisture can form inside the device and damage electronic circuit boards. Do not attempt to open the device other than as instructed in this guide. Do not drop, knock, or shake the device. Rough handling can break internal circuit boards and fine mechanics. Do not use harsh chemicals, cleaning solvents, or strong detergents to clean the device. Do not paint the device. Paint can clog the moving parts and prevent proper operation. Use chargers indoors. All of the above suggestions apply equally to your device, battery, charger, or any enhancement. If any device is not working properly, take it to the nearest authorized service facility for service.

Nokia BH-501 Bluetooth Headset - Modern and Attractive
Just the thing to accompany both his and her mobile phone
Nokia has been leading the mobile phones' market for years, so it's no wonder that they've also decided to tackle the field of accessories. So, in order to extend the level of functionality provided by mobile phones and to convince users of their devotion to communication, the company has released several headsets designed to provide users with a more pleasant communications experience, including here the BH-501 Bluetooth headset. Design [HESAYS]The Nokia BH-501 has a very modern, silver + white or silver + black design, with sleek lines for dynamic users. The headphones hang around the back of the neck and are sustained by the wearers' ears. Overall, the headphones look nice, given the lack of flimsy wires. The foldable design translates into easier storage when traveling.[/HESAYS] [SHESAYS]When it comes to design, Nokia is not recommended as the best for no reason. This way, over the years, its products have almost constantly displayed a modern design (albeit not always a particularly attractive one), which mixes elegance and functionality in a more than harmonious manner. And the BH-501 is no exception from that unwritten rule. Sleek and subtle, the headset comes in a silver finish, with white or black details, with delicate and ergonomic lines, not to mention a very practical, foldable design. [/SHESAYS] Features [HESAYS]As far as compact headphones go, the device isn't that rich, feature-wise. It uses a Bluetooth 1.2 transmitter/emitter in order to communicate with mobile phones or A2DP enabled MP3 players. The interesting feature for mobile users is that they don't have to look like cyborgs anymore by wearing a mono Bluetooth headset. The headphones come with an integrated microphone and when faced with an incoming call, they will switch to the headset profile, allowing users to take the call by only pressing a button.[/HESAYS] [SHESAYS]This headset is compatible with mobile phones, MP3 players, PDAs or PCs. They provide high-quality sound to their users, according to the manufacturer, allowing them to enjoy their favorite tunes and also take calls easily, thanks to the buttons built into the headset. Also, just as the name implies, they offer users Bluetooth connectivity, operating up to ten meters away from the device.[/SHESAYS] Performance [HESAYS]If used continuously, the headphones provide 11 hours of talk and music playback. So, considering you get up in the morning and use them all day long, you should get by the day without any problems. At the end of the day, just plug them in for charging: 4 hours should be enough for a complete charge so you can start again the next day. Sound is not better, nor worse than a standard wired set, but quality is in the "ear of the listener", so don't take my word for it.[/HESAYS] [SHESAYS]The headset sports a 260 mAh Li-Polymer battery, which grants it up to 11 hours of talk time and up to 150 hours of standby time. If its juice runs dry, you will have to

wait about four hours for the battery to charge completely. Measuring 140 x 115 x 50 mm and weighing only 68 grams, you will tend to forget that you even have the BH-501 on![/SHESAYS] User Friendly [HESAYS]Most users should have no problem pairing their BH-501 with a mobile phone. Just activate Bluetooth on the phone and start up the headphones. They should be detected by the phone and pairing should be at a button away. It doesn't get easier than that. The phone and headphones will automatically switch between stereo and headset profiles.[/HESAYS] [SHESAYS]This is not exactly the most complex Bluetooth headset out there, but, just in case there are still people who didn't have the chance to get acquainted with this technology, the BH-501 comes with a complete user guide, so that everyone can work their way around this beautiful headset.[/SHESAYS] Value for money [HESAYS]Nokia accessories are usually expensive, but these headphones come at more than a reasonable price. Costing a bit over $60 they provide users with handsfree communication and wireless freedom. As I am a big fan of wireless devices, I truly appreciate the BH-501 headphones for their great functionality. [/HESAYS] [SHESAYS]The BH-501 sells for about 60 US dollars, a pretty fair sum, for such a product. Taking into account its design, features and specifications, I would say that the manufacturers have evaluated this item correctly, and you'll be very happy you paid this money once you get the headset.[/SHESAYS] Cool factor [HESAYS]In my opinion headphones always had somewhat of a cool factor (that is if users knew how to wear them). And since I don't think wires ever played a big role in the coolness factor, in the end, I'd vouch for the BH-501 any day. Besides, Nokia always has a thing for designing modern looking accessories.[/HESAYS] [SHESAYS]The features that the BH-501 sports make it a "good catch", so does the price, but I think it's really the design that tops the expectations, making this headset a cool item in its range. It's fashionable, elegant and stylish, not to mention the fact that it does its job the way it's supposed to, so, I would say that it makes a really good investment.[/SHESAYS]
