Exploring the FP-7

2. INCREDIBLY USEFUL FEATURES a. No tuning maintenance required offers two outstanding benefits: i. Its ALWAYS in tune. ii. It requires NO periodic maintenance. (NO maintenance cost) b. Transposition You play a piece in any key, and hear it any key you select c. Transpose button is on the LEFT end of the panel. [OM page 52] 3. UNDERSTANDING THE DISPLAY a. Located in the center of the panel is a display that allows you to control many parameters of the instrument. As you press the various buttons on the panel the display will provide information for you regarding the selected button b. Located to the right of the display are three (3) buttons that work together with the display: c. The first button to the right is called DISPLAY. Pressing this button allows you to cycle through the various screens to view information about: i. When the button is CLEAR (no illumination). Using the -/+ buttons to the right of the display allows you to change the selected tone. ii. When the button is GREEN, the screen displays SONG information (song number, etc.) iii. When the DISPLAY button is RED, the screen displays SESSION PARTNER information (chosen rhythm style, etc.) iv. When the button is ORANGE, the screen displays TEMPO information, and the /+ buttons to the right are used to adjust the TEMPO. d. Once you have selected the desired display window you move the cursor within the window by pressing and holding the DISPLAY button, and while holding the DISPLAY button down using the -/+ keys to select the parameter you wish to change, e. Once you have selected the parameter to change, simply use the -/+ buttons to change the value.

4. CHOOSING TONES (voices, sounds) [OM page 35] a. The importance of exploring the tonal resources b. Push a tone group button (located just to RIGHT of the display). c. You may use the -/+ buttons to the RIGHT of the display to scroll through the sounds. Each tone is identified by both name and a number, the display shows the number of the currently selected tone at the top left side of the display. d. A complete list of tones begins on page 158 of the owners manual. e. For those interested, Drum MAPS begin on page 160 of the owners manual. 5. Using sounds together DUAL PLAY (this enables you to play two tones at the same time across the entire keyboard and is also referred to as layering.) [OM page 41] a. Press and hold the tone button of one of the desired sounds, then press the tone button of the other desired sound. b. NOTE: Of the two selected tone buttons, the one you pressed first is called UPPER TONE and the one you pressed second is called LOWER TONE. c. To change the UPPER TONE, use the -/+ buttons. d. To change the LOWER TONE, hold down the tone button for the LOWER TONE and while holding the button down use the -/+ buttons to change its selected tone. e. NOTE: You may change the volume balance of the UPPER and LOWER tones. i. Use the BALANCE knob on the left end of the panel. ii. Turning the knob toward the left increases the volume of the LOWER tone. iii. Turning the knob toward the right increases the volume of the UPPER tone. f. To turn DUAL PLAY off, simply push any tone button. 6. DIVERSION back to orchestration/arranging class a. Solo instruments vs. ensemble instruments b. What kind of mood are we trying to create? c. Using sounds together SPLIT PLAY (this splits the keyboard and allows you to have one tone in the right hand, and a different tone in the left hand.) [OM page 43] a. Choose the tone desired for the right hand (using our new-found knowledge) b. Press the SPLIT button. (to the right of the Tone buttons) c. You can change the tones while in SPLIT PLAY. d. To change the UPPER TONE simply press the tone button of the desired tone, then use the -/+ buttons to select the desired tone. e. To change the LOWER TONE. while holding the SPLIT button down touch the tone family button of the desired tone then use the -/+ buttons to select the specific tone f. NOTE: During SPLIT PLAY the damper pedal can be applied to both tones, or to just one of the tones. [OM page 117] i. Press the FUNCTION button. ii. Press the E PIANO button to make the pedal screen appear iii. While holding the DISPLAY button, use the -/+ buttons to select Damper Part iv. 8. Can we change the SPLIT POINT?? ([OM page 46] a. To change the keyboards SPLIT POINT simply hold down the SPLIT button and while continuing to hold the SPLIT button down touch the key where the split point is desired. The SPLIT POINT will appear in the display. b. NOTE: The default SPLIT POINT is at the F# just below middle C.

REGISTRATION MEMORY OVERVIEW Controlling the FP-77 for real world performance. [OM page 78] a. The FP-7 can remember up to 28 panel settings for quick recall. This allows you to save your panel settings (including layered and split voices, session partner settings, etc.) for performance use and recall them with a touch of a button. (This is similar to saving your favorite radio station settings on your car radio.) b. In addition, the FP-7 can store up to 99 sets (28 individual registrations to a set) of REGISTRATIONS in its INTERNAL MEMORY, or you can store Registration Memory Sets to an external USB memory device. 11. REGISTRATION MEMORY SAVING your settings. [OM page 80] a. Set the panel with your desired set-up b. Hold down the REGISTRATION button, (RIGHT end of PANEL), and press one of the TONE buttons. PLEASE NOTE that in addition to having tone family labels above the buttons, that each button has a number beneath it. c. After choosing the desired button (1-7), use the -/+ buttons to choose the specific location to which you want to save your setting. d. To create your own name for the REGISTRATION: i. Hold down the DISPLAY buttons, and use the -/+ buttons to select the character to change. ii. Use the -/+ buttons to select the desired character. e. To complete the process and save the setting, simply touch the REGISTRATION button. 12. REGISTRATION MEMORY RECALLING your settings. [OM page 82] a. Press the REGISTRATION button. (RIGHT end of Panel) b. Press the numbered button (1-7) where the desired REGISTRATION setting is stored. c. Use the -/+ buttons to select the specific REGISTRATION setting.

13. REGISTRATION MEMORY SAVING a Registration Set [OM page 83] a. The FP-7 allows you to save the entire set of twenty-eight (28) REGISTRATIONS as a set. These sets can be saved to: i. The INTERNAL MEMORY area of the FP-7. (up to 99 sets of 28) ii. EXTERNAL USB memory devices. b. To SAVE a set of set of REGISTRATIONS c. Press the FUNCTION button (LEFT end of Panel) d. Press the TRACK (R) button and the Registration File screen will display. e. While holding down the DISPLAY button, use the -/+ buttons to select SAVE. f. Press the DISPLAY button and the Save Registration screen will appear. To create your own name for the set of registrations: i. Hold down the DISPLAY button to select the character you want to change. ii. Use the -/+ buttons to select the desired character. g. To select the SAVE DESTINATION h. Hold down the display button and use the -/+ buttons to select MEDIA. i. Use the -/+ buttons to choose INTERNAL (to save to one of the 99 internal memory locations) or EXTERNAL (to save to a USB memory device). j. Hold down the DISPLAY button, and use the -/+ buttons to select DESTINATION in the display. k. Use the -/+ buttons to select the specific save destination. l. To complete the process and save the registration set, press the REC button.

14. REGISTRATION MEMORY LOADING a saved set of registrations. [OM page 85] a. Press the FUNCTION button (LEFT end of Panel) b. Press the TRACK (R) button and the Registration File screen will display. c. While holding down the DISPLAY button, use the -/+ buttons to select LOAD. d. Press the DISPLAY button and the Load Registration screen will appear. e. Hold down the display button and use the -/+ buttons to select MEDIA. f. Use the -/+ buttons to select the location where the registration set was saved, INTERNAL (if saved to one of the 99 internal memory locations) or EXTERNAL (if saved to a USB memory device). g. Hold down the DISPLAY button, and use the -/+ buttons to select DESTINATION in the display. h. Use the -/+ buttons to select the specific save destination. i. To complete the process and save the registration set, press the REC button. j. 15. HELPFUL HINTS FOR USER PROGRAMS a. Arrange User Programs in Performance Order for easy recall. b. User Programs allow you to use multiple settings for the performance of a single work, put the desired settings in the needed order for easy recall. c. Be consistent with naming. for instance in naming LAYERED set-ups you might use the & sign to indicate two tones are active. and in set-ups where you have different voices assigned to each hand you might use a /. This will assist you in recalling HOW you have the tones saved. d. 16. Performing with the METRONOME [OM page 54] a. To activate the METRONOME, push the METRONOME button. You will hear the metronome and the light in the metronome button will flash red on the downbeat. b. To change the TEMPO: i. Press the DISPLAY button several times so its lit in orange. The Tempo Screen is displayed. ii. To adjust the tempo use the -/+ buttons. c. To change the BEAT: i. Press the FUNCTION button. ii. Press the METRONOME button. The Metronome screen appears. iii. While holding down the DISPLAY button, use the -/+ buttons to select Beat in the display. iv. Use the -/+ buttons to select the desired beat (time signature).
d. To change the metronome VOLUME, hold the Metronome button down and while continuing to hold the metronome button down use the -/+ to adjust the volume. The display will indicate the chosen metronome volume.

17. RECORDING (How to clone yourself!) [OM page 100] NOTE: About the track buttons. R, 1, 2, and the meaning of the lights when recording.
a. Basic recording (Single track) i. Press the REC button. The Recording a Song screen appears. To record a new song press the PLAY button. ii. Press the REC button again. The Select a track screen appears. iii. Push the TRACK 2 button. iv. Play the piece. v. When you have completed the recording, push PLAY to stop recording. vi. To hear your recording, push the PLAY button again. b. Advanced (multiple part) recording i. Use the steps in Basic Recording above to record the first track. ii. Then press the REC button. The Recording a Song screen appears. To record a new track choose ADD ON by pushing the REC button. iii. Press the REC button again to make the Select a track screen appear. iv. Push the TRACK 1 button. v. Play and record the new track. The FP-7 will begin play back of the previously recorded part (TRACK 2) as soon as you push a key to record the new track. vi. When recording is complete push PLAY. vii. To hear your two track recording, push PLAY. c. For the next part repeat steps vi through x above. The next part would make use of the R TRACK button. d. You can record up to 3 parts, or tracks, for each song. e. Record capacity on the FP-7 is approximately 30,000 notes.

18. NOTES REGARDING SAVING YOUR SONG a. A recorded song is currently residing in a temporary memory area. A song in this temporary memory area will be lost if you turn off power to the FP7 without first saving the song to INTERNAL MEMORY or an EXTERNAL MEMORY DEVICE (USB memory). b. The INTERNAL MEMORY can hold up to 99 songs (actual number of songs will vary depending on the number of notes contained within each song). c. Songs recorded on the FP7 are saved as MIDI files, Type 0. d. USB Memory is often called USB Flash Drives, or USB Thumb Drives, etc. A USBMemory device (optional) can be plugged in to the USB port at the left end of the keyboard. This will allow the file to be saved directly to the USB Memory device. 19. SAVING YOUR SONG [OM page 105] a. Press the FUNCTION button. b. Press the TRACK 1 button, and the SONG FILE screen appears. c. While holding down the DISPLAY button, use the -/+ buttons to select SAVE. d. Press the DISPLAY button and the SONG SAVE screen will appear. e. To name the song hold down the DISPLAY button and use the -/+ buttons to move the cursor to the character that you would like to change. f. Use the -/+ buttons to select the desired character. g. After completing the name hold the DISPLAY button down and use the -/+ buttons to select MEDIA. h. Use the -/+ buttons to select the save destination, INTERNAL or EXTERNAL (USB memory device). i. If saving to a USB memory device, connect the USB memory device to the external memory connector. [OM page 23] j. While holding down the DISPLAY button use the -/+ buttons to select DESTINATION. k. Use the -/+ buttons to select the save destination. l. If a song name is displayed for a number a song has already been saved at that destination number. m. If you select a number in song has already been saved, and save to that number, the previously saved song will be deleted and replaced by the new song. n. Destination numbers that indicate (Not Used) are empty.

20. NOTES REGARDING PLAYING BACK SONGS a. The FP-7 can play back songs: i. From its PRESET SONG list. (These songs are MIDI files) ii. From its INTERNAL MEMORY (provided you have saved songs to this area) iii. From an EXTERNAL USB MEMORY DEVICE. (Audio files or MIDI files) iv. From an EXTERNAL CD DRIVE (Audio CDs, or CDs containing MIDI files) b. The FP-7 can read and play standard MIDI files of both Type O and Type 1. 21. PLAYING SONG FILES (SMF or AUDIO (WAV) files)[OM page 40] a. Insert the USB memory device, if necessary. b. Press the DISPLAY button several times so its lit in green. c. Then hold the DISPLAY button down and use the -/+ buttons to select the desired source. Preset, Internal, or External. d. After choosing the appropriate song source, use the -/+ buttons to select the desired song. e. Press the PLAY button to begin playback. f. You can change the speed of SMF playback. Press the DISPLAY button until it is lit in orange. Use the -/+ buttons to adjust to the desired tempo. (You cannot change the tempo of audio file playback.) g. You can TRANSPOSE playback of a MIDI file or an AUDIO FILE by touching the TRANSPOSE button, and using the -/+ buttons to raise or lower playback in half steps. [OM page 52] h. You can change the VOLUME at which the MIDI or AUDIO file is playing by holding the PLAY button down, and while holding it down use the /+ buttons to change the volume. You can also change the volume by turning the BALANCE knob while holding down the PLAY button. (The default volume is 127 for MIDI files, the default volume is 64 for AUDIO files). [OM page 28] i. You can minimize the volume of the CENTER SOUNDS in the playback of AUDIO files. This will typically minimize (or eliminate) the lead vocal or instrument. During playback of the audio file simply press the TRACK 2 button. [OM page 146]

22. CHANGING OTHER PLAYBACK PARAMETERS You may have interest in manipulating other aspects of a song during playback. Here is a list of some items that may be of interest, with the corresponding page of the owners manual: a. You can set the FP-7 to playback ALL SONGS rather than a single song. [OM page 29] b. When muting a part, the part normally is not heard. The FP-7 allows you to set the muted part to playback at a reduced volume so you could use that part as a guide for playing. [OM page 147] c. You can TRANSPOSE the playback of an AUDIO or MIDI file independently of the keyboard. [OM page 124] d. You can set the sostenuto (FC1) or soft pedal (FC2) to operate as the PLAY/STOP button. Please note additional pedals are optional. [OM page 118] e. The FP-7 allows specific parts (tracks) to be individually muted. [OM page 131] 23. Other FUN things to know. a. When you record on the FP-7 and save the song file to disk it is saved as a Standard MIDI File (SMF type 0) which can be opened in all popular notation and/or sequencing programs (Finale, Sibelius, etc.) Make certain when you open the file in the computer that you choose MIDI file from the drop-down dialogue box. by default the program you are using is looking for its own file type. (SMFs end in.MID) b. Conversely, song files you create on the computer can be saved as a SMF and played on the FP-7. c. The FP-7 has 339 tones (sounds, voices) from which to choose. d. The FP-7 may be easily tuned to non-standard pitch. e. The FP-7 has a number of historical tuning schemes. f. The FP-7 CAN be connected directly to a PC or Apple computer. g. Other devices (like an iPod) may be directly plugged into the FP-7. 24. SUPPORT When you have questions, we have answers.
