About menu items and the LCD panel
A menu item that is grayed out is not available under the current recording or playback conditions. The LCD screen is manufactured using extremely high-precision technology, so over 99.99% of the pixels are operational for effective use. However, there may be some tiny black points and/or bright points (white, red, blue, or green in color) that appear constantly on the LCD screen. These points are normal results of the manufacturing process and do not affect the recording in any way.

Maintenance and precautions
HDV format and recording/ playback
Your VCR is capable of recording in both HDV and DV formats. You can use mini DV format cassettes only. Use a cassette with the mark. Your VCR is not compatible with the Cassette Memory function.
Copyright signal
x When you play back If the cassette you play back on your VCR contains copyright signals, you cannot copy it to a tape in another device connected to your VCR. x When you record You cannot record software on your VCR that contains copyright control signals for copyright protection of software. [Cannot record due to copyright protection.] appears on the LCD screen, if you try to record such software. Your VCR does not record copyright control signals on the tape when it records.
The HDV format is a video format developed to record and play back digital high definition (HD) video signals on a DV cassette. Your VCR adopts the Interlace mode with 1,080 effective scan lines of screen ruling (1080i, number of pixels 1,440 1,080 dots). The video bit rate for recording is about 25 Mbps. i.LINK is adopted for the digital interface, enabling a digital connection with an HDV compatible TV or computer.
HDV signals are compressed in MPEG2 format, which is adopted in BS (broadcast satellite) digital, terrestrial digital HDTV broadcastings, in Blu-ray Disc recorders, etc.
x When not using your VCR for a long time Remove the cassette and store it. x To prevent accidental erasure Slide the write-protect tab on the cassette to set it to SAVE.
The playback The playback screen screen pauses. goes blank.
The following phenomenon occurs in the DV format.
x How to prevent moisture condensation When you bring your VCR from a cold place into a warm place, put your VCR in a plastic bag and seal it tightly. Remove the bag when the air temperature inside the plastic bag has reached the surrounding temperature (after about 1 hour).
Block-noise appears.
Video head
If you play back a tape recorded in the HDV format, the image and sound may freeze for a while (about 0.5 seconds). This occurs if the HDV signals cannot be recorded or played back correctly because of dirt on the tape or video head. Depending on the cassette, this fairly infrequently occurs even if the cassette is brand new or is not used a lot. If this freezing point is created while playing back, you can solve this problem and see the pictures by rewinding after slightly forwarding. Such a freezing point cannot be recovered if it was created while recording. To prevent such a problem, use the Sony mini DV cassette.
The playback screen goes blank.
The video heads will be worn after long use. If you cannot obtain a clear image even after using a cleaning cassette (optional), the video heads may be worn out. Please contact your Sony dealer or local authorized Sony service facility to have the video heads replaced.
Do not exert excessive pressure on the LCD screen, as it may cause damage. If your VCR is used in a cold place, a residual image may appear on the LCD screen. This is not a malfunction. While using your VCR, the back of the LCD screen may heat up. This is not a malfunction.
Specifications
x To clean the LCD screen If fingerprints or dust make the LCD screen dirty, it is recommended you use a soft cloth to clean it. When you use the LCD Cleaning Kit (optional), do not apply the cleaning liquid directly to the LCD screen. Use cleaning paper moistened with the liquid.
