Epson EMP-DM1 and EMP-TWD10 Projectors Hands (and Eyes) On
Built-in speakers, optical units and other attractive features
For the time being, projectors are not exactly the first choice for most users contemplating the idea of building themselves a high-end home cinema system. However, most people are overlooking the clear advantages provided by some of these devices, as for example the two models we'll talk about as follows, namely Epson's EMP-DM1 and EMP-TWD10, which offer an enhanced level of versatility around the house, while retailing for some more or less OK prices. First of all, let's talk a bit about the EMP-TWD10. This 720p, 3LCD unit offers users a 1200 ANSI light output, 16.77 million colors, as well as support for resolutions ranging between VGA - UXGA and a lens zoom ratio between 1 - 1,5x. Additionally, the image size is actually pretty impressive (30 to 300 inches in diagonal), while the projection distance varies between 0,73 m - 7,57 m (16:9 aspect ratio). However, what might really boost up this thing's level of success is Epson's decision to include an optical unit in the mix (compatible with DVD-R/RW, DVD+R:RW, CD-R/RW, CD-ROM discs), as well as a couple of 4 x 5W built-in speakers. In this way, users will be able to enjoy their DVD Video, DVD VR, SVCD, VCD, CD, DivX, MP3, WMA, JPEG media and files directly, without the need to attach the EMP-TWD10 to a computer or media players. Additionally, the device also features a swiveling base, which allows users to actually rotate the projection lens (and thus completely change the orientation of the projected images) at any angle they might wish. While the EMP-TWD10 offers a higher resolution and brightness level, the EMP-DM1 compensates with its enhanced level of portability and versatility. Thus, the device can be very easily carried around the house, as it measures 245x327x92mm, at a weight of around 2,8 kilos, and even comes with its own handle. Just like the EMP-TWD10, the EMP-DM1 comes packed with its own DVD player and speakers. While the optical unit is the same as in the case of the previous model, the speakers of the EMP-DM1 are actually more powerful, delivering 8 Watts RMS instead of just 4. However, the display features are less impressive, namely just 480p resolution, 1000 lumen brightness, while the zoom has the same value range (1-1.5x). Besides providing all of the features and functions mentioned above, the EMP-DM1 and EMP-TWD10 also have another major advantage: they're relatively affordable, compared to other projectors, retailing for around 500 and 700 Euros, respectively.
