Sony VPL-VW12HT

A veteran of the projector business, Sony knows its onions. But is their giant new model a big hit or a massive disappointment?

Test Scenes

Singin in the Rain
ere comes another giant in terms of home cinema projection equipment; Sonys very impressive VPL-VW12HT LCD projector. Unlike the equally massive Yamaha LPX-500 (reviewed in our last issue), the Sony boasts not one, but three LCD panels allowing for a large, bright picture from its 200W lamp. The projectors also easy to use, with clear onscreen menus and a rather nifty (backlit) handset. Its amazingly lightweight, considering its size (7 x 16 x 17in), and unlike a lot of its smaller counterparts, has an almost noise-free cooling fan. As with the Yamaha, this stylishly designed projector is not really suitable for small home cinema layouts. Set at 13ft, 6in from the screen, the VPL-VW12HT throws a 5ft diagonal picture when set at Normal aspect ratio and minimum zoom (a short-focus lens is available from Sony).

Pin-sharp pictures

Likewise, the projector handles with ease the eye-popping richness of the colour during the dazzling Broadway Melody sequence near the films climax. A setting called Cinema Black, accessible through the menu, reduces the lamp output which, in turn, deepens black areas of the picture. Monochrome films look particularly pin-sharp as a result. With compatible equipment connected via the video socket, the Sony confidently projects off-air transmissions and satellite programmes with the minimum of fuss. Again, as is the case with VHS, the sharpness of the image is wholly dependent on screen size at minimum zoom, the picture is a little softer than if you project DVDs via the S-video lead. Correcting keystone distortion can, like various other functions, be filed in the video memory which saves the needless task of setting up the projector each time its switched on. The projector is also very quiet when in use, but care should be taken to keep the unit well-ventilated. Dust and smoke are enemies of video projectors and should be avoided as much as possible. Sony promises between 2,000 and 3,000 hours of lamp life depending on the lamp setting and, as with the air filter, the projectors inbuilt memory will warn you when these items need replacing. The Sony VPL-VW12HT projector is expensive but proves that in the battle of the formats, LCD technology can still hold its own against Further Info the current crop of Call or visit DLP projectors. www.sony.co.uk

Fast master

The projector has no trouble at all with fast-moving colours in the Broadway Melody scene

Seven heaven

But, you dont have to reside in a mansion to appreciate that the VPL-VW12HT is a thing of beauty. There are seven modes for the aspect ratio, with 16:9 being the favoured selection for most DVD movies (anything wider will be reproduced with the obligatory black bars at the top and bottom of the screen). Some may choose to select Zoom, but this, in essence, only removes the edges of the screen in order to fill the 16:9 frame area. As is the case with the majority of its rivals, the Sony is compatible with six separate colour systems including, SECAM, NTSC and PAL. Connections include video, S-video, DTV, HDTV, RGB and VGA. Technical specs aside, though, just how does it compare

Good Points

DVD pictures are sharp and bright. A stylish design which is easy to use

Bad Points

Very expensive. VHS/off-air picture is a little soft

Overall

The Sony is a worthy addition to any home cinema setup, if youve the ready cash. The question is, will LCD survive with the proliferation of DLP technology?

with the competition? The answer is: exceedingly well. The cinematic quality of 4.3 images (in this case, the recently remastered Technicolor MGM musical Singin in the Rain on DVD) look stunning. Fleshtones on the faces of the Hollywood crowd at the beginning of the film are natural and solid.

Upclose and personal

Skintones in the opening scene are sharp and solid with amazing detail
