VOYAGE OF

AT THE LIMITS

Tourer and racer rolled into one; almost like Jekyll and Hyde. The 990 SMT is a unique combination of excellent freedom to lean, extreme steering precision, a sporty chassis and endless power. Not to be caught by your opponents. And can only be described in three words: Are you ready?
The daily grind is in the past, now theres fun to be had every day. Because traffic lights turn into start lights, because traffic jams mark out a slalom course through the rush hour, because the baffled faces of others gradually disappear in the rearview mirror. As easy to handle as your first bicycle. As relaxed as on the sofa at home. Welcome to the traffic jam Adventure playground; get ready to enjoy the city.

IN THE FAST LANE

Dakar genes in an asphalt predator? High ground clearance, long suspension travel, perfect ergonomics the 990SMT bears the Adventure legacy in its blood and makes short work of even the fiercest of gravel attacks. Bumps? Stroke the spine gently. Rough gravel? Massages the legs. The outlook? Ahead: refreshment for the soul; behind you: clouds of dust. The recreational programme begins where asphalt ends.

FOR TOUGH GUYS

All -Inclusive!

EXCEPT FOR BOREDOM.

If you had four wishes, you could wish for a touring bike, a race bike, an offroad bike and a city bike. Or one bike for everything: the KTM 990 SMT. A bike that gives you all you could wish for on every terrain, from relaxed cruising to racing at speed to drifting along gravel tracks. The only question is what do you do with the other three wishes.
Below you? The perfectly padded twin-level seat for comfort even on the longest of tours. Or for excellent feedback, outstanding freedom of movement and great hold on the racetrack. Behind you? Space enough for a passenger. In front of you? Shot-peened, tapered aluminium handlebars and an intelligently designed, effective wind screen. In short: You are riding the KTM 990 SMT. Or in one word: the universalbrillianttouringfuntoridemanoeuvrable superfastbike.

PAMPERprogramme

FOR TECHNOLOGY FANS

Since its debut, the KTM SMT has won countless comparative tests. And its even better in the 2011 model year thanks to many new features.
The extremely stable upside-down forks from WP Suspension, with an internal diameter of 48mm and 160mm suspension travel, guarantee unrivalled steering precision, incredible grip, sensitive suspension just as required for the highest levels of ride comfort or crisp sportiness, since the wide adjustment range enables individual tuning for every riding situation. Which is perfectly suited to the all-round character of the SMT: manoeuvrable but never nervous; direct feedback and crisp performance but never uncomfortable.

>>> Forks

ABS plus KTM equals: safety and a sporty braking feel. A latest generation, dual-circuit ABS system, weighing in at just one kilogramme, has been developed in close cooperation with Bosch specifically for the KTM 990 SMT. Key benefits: While conventional systems often reduce the braking force at low levels of braking deceleration, the ABS on the SMT permits truly extreme rates of deceleration. The sensitive feel of a good sports front brake remains intact. Thanks to active rollover detection and prevention, the Anti-locking effect of the SMT is only activated in real emergencies, such as in the event of jumps in the friction caused by sudden dampness or a dirty road surface, or when the hand brake lever is pulled too hard.

>>> ABS Hardware
Great sound, classy look, highest quality: the exhaust system is manufactured at KTM in Mattighofen according to the strictest standards and entirely from rustproof stainless steel.

>>> Exhaust

The front and rear sensor discs generate 48 signals per wheel revolution hence, it is simple to detect undesired differences in the wheel speed and intervene helpfully in the brake circuit. As a result, the ABS on the SMT always regulates the brake pressure in the event of a shock, emergency or other over-braking situation in such a way that over-braking of the tyres is eliminated. In-house comparative tests with the competition have confirmed: the KTM 990 SMT with ABS achieves the same levels of deceleration as the absolute braking professionals exceeding the performance of every one of its competitors as well as that of superbikes with ABS currently available on the market.

>>> ABS sensors

More content than size: integrated luggage mounting system for securing one top box and two side panniers. Room for everything you could possibly need on your travels but leaving enough space either side to squeeze easily between obstacles, thanks to an extremely slim design.
>>> Rear Subframe
On the shot-peened, tapered aluminium handlebars, you have everything safely under control thanks also to hand guards fitted as standard. Information is delivered at all times by the clearly arranged instruments. For example, the fact that your trip has lasted so long. Incredibly long, seeing how well you still feel because the frame-mounted front fairing also acts as an effective wind shield on long journeys in the saddle and sitting on the SMT is not at all tortuous, even after a 1,000 kilometre tour.

QUALITY
>>> Quality Assurance
Austria has the toughest test tracks in the world. And these are to be found in Mattighofen: in the heads of our designers. We think harder about how touring can be made more comfortable. We subject ourselves and our bikes to greater pain to make every long ride feel like a short trip. From the first sketch to the final test kilometre.

Made in Austria those who make everything themselves control the quality. When it comes to the main assemblies, KTM relies on its own expertise: frame, exhaust, engine, even the suspension components from WP designed, computed and tested in Orange County.

>>> Perfection

Nothing assures quality better than the masterly work of well-trained hands. All KTM parts undergo meticulous checks by experienced specialists people who know what really matters when it comes to riding. It knows what point to set first. It draws the seams perfectly in the most intelligent sequence. It welds a few kilogrammes of Cr-Mo steel tubing into one of the lightest, most stable and most precise frames in motorcycle history. A KTM frame. Every KTM frame.
>>> Welding robot
High-precision laser cutting machines cut the raw material exactly to the required lengths with perfect cutting lines. Together with the clean welding work, this process ensures that KTM frames arrive at final assembly practically free of inherent tension and incomparably true-to-size.

Perfection is not when you cannot add any more. Perfection is when you can no longer take anything away. In art and architecture there is a movement called minimalism which is about reducing things down to the basics. About simplicity.
Supermoto is the concept of minimalism applied to motorbike construction. What is essential for a motorbike? Two wheels, an engine, a good chassis and brakes. Supermoto is when the basics are perfect.

990 SM r

tio ompeti c

WHY START IT?

FINISH SOMETHING
The new 990 Supermoto R. The Supermoto idea finished off.

IF YOU CAN'T

Rear Clear line and surprisingly comfortable even on long tours: The seat of the 990 SM Comfort isn't about upholstery alone, but has at least as R. much to do with the seat position. Details that count: carbon heat shields over the stainless steel silencers as standard.
Marchesini light alloy wheels Quite simply the best: forged Marchesini light alloy wheels with Pirelli tyres as standard. Not because they look so good, but because minimising the rotating and unsprung weights increases the riding pleasure and quite simply makes it faster.

990 smr

A chassis with exactly the right combination of sporty resilience and comfort, a high-quality finish, perfect ergonomics, an ample range, refined components and the ultimate engine. Handlebar If one single detail is important, then all details are important: Shot-blasted, butted aluminium handlebar as standard.

THE TRUTH

Exhaust Stainless steel double-pipe system with two regulated catalytic converters. Shock absorber The WP shock absorber is connected directly to the swing arm and is the perfect complement to the fork. It has fully adjustable high and low speed compression damping and rebound damping. The piston rod, like the fork, is extensively fine-polished and coated in TiAIN.

IS HIDDEN IN THE DETAILS

Fork As standard: Fully adjustable 48mm WP upside-down fork with particularly wide tuning range from sport to touring. The inner tubes are extensively coated with titanium-aluminium-nitrite, which works roughly as follows: First, the fork is precision-ground, then hard-chrome plated, and finally the TiAIN coating is applied. The result is around 2.5 times as hard as hard chrome and is so even and smooth that the fork is extremely sensitive.
Engine The heart of the SM is the LC8 75-Twin recognised as R the benchmark in high-revving series-produced twin-cylinders. The intelligent design with a multifunctional balance shaft makes it the lightest and most compact V2 in its class. The sophisticated engine design impresses riders through its explosive power and a very soft and even throttle response. The optimum value is exactly in the middle between too much and too little. Experienced motorbike riders know: 155 HP might sound good, but when it comes to having fun it is more important that enough usable power is applied right where you need it as you battle to get round the bends. Especially if the HP, as here, is pulling a really low vehicle weight of 189 kg and as such can be safely controlled in all circumstances. Not convinced? Try it out on a road test and no further explanations will be required. It's not by chance that the LC8 is the top ranking engine in many international comparison tests. And that's even against bikes with an additional 40 HP.
Rear-wheel brake Brembo two-piston floating calliper with 240 mm mono disk.
Front brake Precision tool: Radiallymounted Brembo 4-piston monoblock calliper, radial brake pump and two 305 type disks. Brutal if need be, foolproof to use and easy to maintain.
First Oil Filling for all KTM Engines.
Frame/weight At around 9 kg, the powder-coated frame of thin-walled chrome-molybdenum stainless steel weighs the same as a mountain bike. The consistently lightweight construction contributes to the sensationally low overall weight. Lightness that you can feel with every metre.

SIMPLY SPORT.

FOR OVER 50 YEARS
KTM is a brand that comes from motor sport. From singlecylinder motor sport. Weve been doing it for over 50 years. On the road and off the road, and in a sport which combines road and off-road use within the same race: Supermoto. Naturally, we were the first manufacturer to series-produce serious Supermoto machines.This head start in experience means we can bring Supermoto models to the road that incorporate all our knowledge of Supermoto. Powered by an engine built using all of our single cylinder engine building experience the LC4, the most powerful and modern single in the world.The result is the KTM 690 SMC, ready to take on both the track and daily life.

SUPERMOTO COMPETITION.

KTM 690 SMC

If its to do with Supermoto, we leave everyone else behind. The 690 SMC is the best example: 100% Supermoto technology with extremely wide range of uses. Unrivalled in everyday use and on the race track.
Rear Integral tank rear unit of robust plastic. Suitable for 2-person use the passenger foot pegs are supplied as standard. More than adequate: The lockable tank with integrated petrol pump holds 12 litres.
Exhaust Suitable for everyday use: Compliance with Euro-3 limits through stainless steel silencers with regulated catalytic converter, fitted as standard.
Seat Motor sport know-how: Long seat for maximum mobility. Simple access to air box and electrics with quick release seat.
Rims World innovation: KTM is the only manufacturer to offer patented tubeless spoked rims. The result: Quick tyre change, reduced unsprung weight, minimised rotatory wheel inertia and therefore more sensitive suspension behaviour, more spontaneous acceleration and better manageability. And automatically quicker lap times. In addition, the most stable spoked rims ever tested by the TV.
RACING SPORT TECHNOLOGY SIMPLICITY AS AN EXPRESSION OF COMPLEX DEVELOPMENT
Motor sport is simple: The fastest wins, nothing else counts. A simple goal, which is hard to achieve. Drifting and cruising with one and the same motorbike. The 690 SMC is the Supermoto with the widest range of uses.
Brakes The ultimate in Supermoto race technology by Brembo: At the front, a 320mm floating disk together with a radially bolted four-piston calliper and four individual pads ensure outstanding control and high reserves. The rear wheel is safely braked via a single-piston floating calliper and a 240 mm brake disk.
Suspension Fully adjustable 48 mm USD forks by WP guarantee incomparable tracking stability and high reserves. The high quality WP shock absorber with integrated compensating reservoir is connected via a Pro Lever linkage and has adjustable high and low speed compression damping, rebound damping and spring preload.
Engine The design objective was simple: A single cylinder engine like never before. But simple goals are hard to achieve: 654 cc, overhead camshaft, elegant rocker arm operation of the 4 ultra-light hollow stem valves (sodium-filled on the outlet side), rocker arm optimised in terms of weight and rigidity, pressurised circulatory lubrication, active engine housing ventilation, central balance shaft, low maintenance chamfered cylinder head, Keihin engine management with electronic throttle valve control (patented EPT system), Diamond-like-Carbon coatings. The result: More powerful, lighter, more compact, lower consumption, more sophisticated, lower maintenance and so reliable that this high performance engine completed the 50,000 km endurance test in Europes biggest motorbike magazine with flying colours. In addition, we were able to increase the service interval by 50 To put %. it simply: A new dimension in single-cylinders.

Clutch The worldwide patented APTCTM anti-hopping clutch. The complex mechanism with partitioned clutch hub and special pressure plate simply makes everything better: Maximum grip when accelerating, no rear wheel hopping when braking and all this with less pressure needed than before.
