Failed shortly after purchase Great design, too clever, almost. I prefer the older Sony I had. Amazing Technology, pleasantly surprised I own a Sony SW77, Grundig 800 and Sangean ATS-909. The Sony SW100 performs excellent.

OTS of good reading again this month, thanks to our editors, our reporters and friends. fans, be they mediumwave or shortwave DXers. Arctic Waves returns again, after being introduced last month. As I said at that time, we'll use this column for interesting radio news - past, present and future - from Canada's Arctic, an area that is of special interest to Canadians and where radio has many special applications. Complementing Arctic Waves is the 1940's speech from the Empire Club of Canada: The Eastern Arctic Patrol. The speaker has many recollections of radio programming heard while in the Arctic. I think you'll nd this lengthy article to be a good read. So enjoy and remember to "Think Spring!" Thanks again this month to our friends at www.dxer. ca for providing access to Nick Hall-Patch's technical review of the Eton E-1 radio. Since its introuction a couple of years ago, this radio has gained a lot of Good listening, Harold Sellers Our sympathies to Looking Back editor Tom Williamson. Tom's wife Angela passed away in early February, at the age of 84. Tom plans to be back with his column in our April issue. Daylight Saving Time returns on Sunday, March 9th. This will result in some schedue changes for shortwave broadcasters. We haven't commented on many changes in this issue, since you'll have it in your hands for as much as two weeks before the switch to DST. Thus be aware and we'll try to update everything for the April issue.

The extension postpones, for at least six months, removals that the station agreed to two years earlier with the Quito Airport Corporation (CORPAQ) to make way for a new international airport. Once the new facility is completed, some of the shortwave stations antenna towers could obstruct the approach of landing planes. Specically, this means that we can continue broadcasting on two shortwave frequencies to Brazil, said Doug Weber, radio director for the Latin America Region. Two frequencies allows us to better cover Brazil. With two, we can cover both north and south Brazil. This allows us to continue to cover Brazil well. The mission agreed that 30 towers would be removed by December 2007. The rst phase of dismantling, initiated in early 2006, saw 18 towers lowered. HCJB Globals engineering staff was poised to remove 12 more towers in the second phase. But Weber was informed that CORPAQ granted the missions request for continued use of those 12 towers, along with 18 others that will not impede approaching aircraft. It also means we can continue with test transmissions of digital shortwave signals to Europe and other countries while opening the way to digital shortwave broadcasting to Brazil, Weber said, adding that while European listener replies to the digital broadcasts are few, the listeners report a strong signal. Were very thankful to the Lord for letting us continue with these ministries, he said. HCJB Global Voice is conducting German-language digital shortwave broadcasts as a member of Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM), a global consortium of broadcasters, broadcasting associations, network operators, manufacturers, research institutions, regulatory bodies and others. In addition, the pioneer missionary broadcaster inaugurated on Saturday a daily one-hour DRM programme stream in Portuguese created especially for the digital shortwave format. Weber said the programmes will be recorded by staff members at the HCJB Global-Brazil ofce in Curitiba. http://www.christiantoday.com/article/hcjb.shortwave.broadcasts.in.ecuador.granted.extension/16516.htm

HCJB shortwave broadcasts in Ecuador granted extension Posted: Sunday, January 27, 2008, 9:34 (GMT)

Moscow hosts informal summit of Commonwealth of Independent States

HCJB Global Voice in Ecuador has been granted an extension to continue using its shortwave radio antennas that are scheduled for dismantling and removal from the missions international transmission site near Pifo, a town 18 miles east of Quito.
An informal summit conference of the Commonwealth of Independent States is about to open in Moscow. It will focus on economic and political cooperation. Concerted ventures in transportation are considered of utmost importance. A senior

deputy prime minister of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev, is expected to address the forum. Ukraines Viktor Yushchenko intends to speak about the delivery of sources of fuel. The Commonwealth forum is also expected to focus on plans for the celebration of the 65th anniversary of the Allied victory in World War II and collectively-sponsored radio and television broadcasts. http://www.ruvr.ru/main.php?lng=eng& q=23240&cid=45&p=22.02.2008
broadcasts. Still there are a number of ways to be informed about events. Albania Kosovars, the people of Kosovo are largely ethnic Albanians. And Kosovo borders Albania, so newscasts from Tirana should prove interesting. Radio Tiranas all too brief broadcasts in English are at 0130 UTC on 6110 kHz and 0245 UTC on 7245 kHz to North America. Bosnia-Herzegovina The Bosnians have concerns about how things play out due to their Serbian minority. Bosnia has no external service, but one can listen online at http://www4.bhrt.ba/ Bulgaria Bulgaria, as a new member of the European Union, seems to be trying to avoid taking sides. Their coverage has been quite neutral.

United Kingdom

The BBC World Service stopped broadcasting to Europe on shortwave this week, bringing to an end a 76-year chapter in radio history.
Around 100 million of the BBC World Services 183 million global audience listen on shortwave. But increasing numbers of people, including the vast majority in most developed countries, are listening on FM, satellite and online. The European shutdown of the World Service English-language shortwave service began in March last year and was completed on Monday, when its north Africa service, which also reached southern Europe, was turned off. World Service shortwave transmissions have been steadily reduced since 2001, when they were axed in North America and Australia. http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2008/feb/20/bbc.radio?gusrc= rss&feed=media

in Amharic are from April 2000 (!). The latest radio news is dated 02-13-1999 (using dd/mm/yyyy format!) perhaps a more generous calendar is in use? Attempting to load the videos locked my computers web browser, so I cant comment on the content. Printed news appears to be updated, and at the time of my visit included mention of a conference on Ethiopia at the University of Saskatchewan on 5 February of this year. FRANCE: Radio France International (RFI): http:// www.r.fr/ What follows is a re-print of last years information I couldnt get the RFI site to load during several attempts over three days. The RFI website is primarily intended for a Frenchlanguage audience (and why not?). To get to the English content, click on the tiny english button located near the top, below the big banner ad, and towards the middle (where youll nd similar links to the RFI site in nineteen different languages). The English page features advertising at the top and along the left and right sides, and most of the buttons will take you back to French-language features. Scrolling down youll nd two columns; on the right are links to download or listen to audio of RFIs English to Africa and English to Asia programming, posted in Real Audio and Windows Media formats. In the left column is a featurette on Mission Paris, a bilingual radio drama, followed by one paragraph outlining RFIs English programming, which is itself followed by a list of times, frequencies, and target areas. The RFI website is a treasure trove for those users who are comfortable working in French, but this functionality does not extend to English users. Next month look for details on Gabon, Germany, Greece, and Hungary, as well as more information about internet radio and the Nokia N810. See you in the Spring.

This column highlights receptions of broadcasting stations between 2 and 30 MHz, as made by our members. When you listen to your shortwave radio, please share your loggings with others by contributing them to this column. Editorial deadline: 15th of the month. ASTEN your seatbelts! Were taking off with a jam-packed, all-star, column for you this month! We have a number of loggings this month that are not normally heard in Ontario. Hopefully this will bode well for our upcoming Shadow Lake Radio Camp in April. Karl Racenis and Michael Ford sent in some loggings that had just missed my previous deadline by a couple of days. Fortunately, both of their submissions were timely enough to include in this column as both contained some quality loggings from the Brighton, Michigan DXpedition and from across the pond in Merry Ol England. Mike also managed to send in a second report just before my current deadline. I managed to take a week off from work and, because the weather was horrible and I didnt have much of a chance to do any stargazing, I had the opportunity to do a lot more listening than usual and could contribute more loggings to boot! We also have a new contributor this month! Gracing this column for the rst time, to my recollection, is long time ODXA and CIDXC member Mick Delmage. Welcome, Mick, and report often. And we have a number of quality loggings from our usual gang of reporters. My next deadline is March 15th. Until then, read on and enjoy! Remember to report on what you have been hearing! the old community hall that was located across from the Northern Store, said Chief Keyna Norwegian. A lot of youth got involved in the project and would play records during their one-hour shows, she said. "It was a lot of fun," said Norwegian. Morris Lafferty used to announce the news, and Norwegian said she can still remember his deep voice coming over the radio. A new radio station is part of the band's goal to nd new ways of reaching its membership, said Norwegian. The station would help the band share rsthand information with community members on issues the band is working on such as the Deh Cho Process, said Norwegian. A radio station would also play a cultural role. "Our priority is really our language," she said. Norwegian envisions nightly Slavey lessons that whole families could take part in. Listening to a lesson over the radio would be more convenient than committing to a classroom setting, she said. The station would also provide a means to share the experiences and stories of elders before they are lost, Norwegian said. Because local residents will be used to staff the station, it is also a good chance for people to take training to become technicians or radio announcers, she said. "It will build up self-esteem for some of our youth," Norwegian said.
Narwal hunt wraps up in Repulse Bay Darrell Greer Northern News Services Published Wednesday, August 15, 2007 REPULSE BAY - The narwhal hunt in Repulse Bay has been deemed a success by the Arviq Hunters and Trappers Organization (HTO), despite the fact the community felt more tags should have been issued. Arviq HTO chairperson Michel Akkuardjuk said the hunt was successful and the HTO is quite happy with the way things went. "Many of the narwhal were landed close to shore, with almost every boat in Repulse involved in the hunt, so there were many people who could watch the hunters as the narwhal were being caught," said Akkuardjuk. "There were between two to four people on each boat taking part in the hunt." Repulse hunters still use a traditional harpoon to strike narwhal. Akkuardjuk said there were very few narwhal struck and lost this year. He said that's common when the narwhal are close to shore and many boats are hunting together. "The community is always excited about the hunt. "When it begins and the narwhal start to come
