SUBARU BOXER DIESEL
Press information October 2008
Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd.
Impreza 2.0D: Aim of development
The SUBARU BOXER DIESEL is a new Subaru engine line-up that combines the lightweight compact construction of a Horizontally-Opposed Engine, providing minimal vibration noise and superior axle response, together with the high fuel economy and ample start-up torque from the low-speed range that a diesel engine offers. The SUBARU BOXER DIESEL, an icon of next-generation technology of Subaru, went on sale with Legacy and Outback models in Europe this spring, receiving high praise for its excellent performance. Continuing this fall, a SUBARU BOXER DIESEL with closed diesel particulate filter (DPF) will be equipped in the compact crossover SUV, Forester, providing unique Subaru technology and a further evolution of environmental friendliness in response to the needs of customers in Europe with increasing environmental awareness. The introduction of SUBARU BOXER DIESEL in the Impreza completes Subarus Boxer Diesel Model lineup. This lineup not only simply broadens the selection of Subaru vehicles available, but also truly realises and strongly emphasises the Subaru ideal by integrating the unique driving performance, comfort, and dependability with environmentally friendly technologies. Last years complete redesign of the Impreza, and the high-dimensional fusion of the three components of Quality ride, Packaging, and Design with a Sports Casual design concept, was accepted by users from a broad range of ages and not only conventional Subaru fans. We have now added SUBARU BOXER DIESEL, a newly developed 6-speed manual transmission, and a symmetrical AWD to the compact body of the 5-door Impreza. Further, in order to maintain the speedy feeling of the Impreza, we have performed specialised tuning of the chassis for diesel models based on the Subaru Dynamic Chassis Control Concept (Subaru DC3), and applied other improvements to achieve enjoyable driving, comfortable riding, and enhanced environmental friendliness. We have aimed for a Sporty & Sophisticated Impreza diesel. We look forward to our customers experiencing this speedy and sophisticated driving feeling, which is different from previous turbocharged petrol engine Impreza models. With a balance of agile, sophisticated driving and the excellent environmental friendliness expected from the Impreza, the addition of this unique diesel model to our lineup will firmly establish the Subaru brand in the competitive C-segment of the European market, and respond to the needs of an even broader range of customers.
Impreza 2.0D: Major features
Driving Performance
- The adoption of the SUBARU BOXER DIESEL, which not only provides the advantages of diesel engines and Horizontally-Opposed engines, like massive torque and good fuel economy, but also cancels some typical disadvantages of conventional diesel engines, like vibration and noise. - The newly developed 6-speed manual transmission was designed with improved ease of operation, providing a speedy torque feeling for driving enjoyment and comfort from low to high speeds. - The symmetrical AWD, with its low centre of gravity and excellent weight balance, and the Subaru Dynamic Chassis Control Concept (Subaru DC3), tuned especially for diesel models, provide sportiness and quality ride. The result is agile and sophisticated handling, for superior riding and operating stability with natural driving performance.
Environmental Friendliness
- In addition to the reduction in friction loss throughout the engine and transmission, the improvement of aerodynamic performance and the use of electric power steering have achieved environmental performance that is top in its class*. (CO2 emissions of 152 g/km for the 2.0D, and 155 g/km for the 2.0D Sport) * 2-litre class, compact hatchback AWD model - Range of over 1,000 km on a full tank of fuel (64 litres). - In addition to the good fuel economy for the SUBARU BOXER DIESEL, the adoption of a closed DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) improves the capabilities for purifying exhaust emission.
Comfort
- The Subaru DC3 and SUBARU BOXER DIESEL, which provides the advantages of Horizontally-Opposed engines, allow a quiet, stable, and quality ride despite a diesel engine.
Packaging
- Compared with the previous model, by expanding the wheelbase and widening the body, while also reducing the overhang, an ample and comfortable passenger compartment was achieved without having to increase the body size any more than necessary. Additionally, spacious headroom is ensured due to optimization of the slant of the side window to create a comfortable interior space in which occupants will never feel cramped. - Storage of the double-wishbone suspension under the floor of the car and minimal intrusion of the wheel housings into the vehicle interior allow for a wide flat luggage space. - Accessibility has been improved due to an increased door opening thanks to a newly adopted door with attached sash and refinements in the shape of the side of the seat cushion. - Ample storage space is provided with sufficient consideration for ease of use and accessibility.
SUBARU BOXER DIESEL: Features & Benefits
Low vibrations and noise
- The movements of the horizontally-opposed pistons work in unison to effectively cancel out the second harmonic vibration (vibration at double the frequency of the engines revolution) that causes discomfort in drivers. Thanks to this structural advantage, the SUBARU BOXER DIESEL does not need balancer shafts which are commonly used in conventional in-line and V-type engines. The compactly designed crankshaft sandwiched by the highly rigid cylinder blocks helps minimizing an uncomfortable noise and vibration up to high rpms.
Superior engine response and good fuel economy
- No need for balancer shafts leads to low rotational inertia and friction within the engine itself. The result is exceptional accelerator response and good fuel economy.
Contribution to the handling performance
- The bore pitch has been shortened and the left and right blocks holding the crankshaft provide a highly rigid design compared to the conventional in-line engines, which has also allowed use of an aluminium alloy cylinder block for weight savings. - In addition to the low centre of gravity provided by the structure of the Horizontally-Opposed Engine, the placement of the turbocharger unit at the lower part of the engine functions to maintain a low centre of gravity for the diesel engine, which tends to be quite heavy in weight. - These engine features contribute to excellent handling performance.
SUBARU BOXER DIESEL: Mechanisms
1. Cylinder block
- Cylinder block An aluminium alloy cylinder block has been used to maximise the potential of the highly rigid Horizontally-Opposed Engine layout. To obtain ideal diesel combustion, the stroke was extended by 11 mm and the bore was shortened by 6 mm compared to the SUBARU BOXER four-cylinder 2.0-litre petrol engine (EJ20). The bore pitch has been shortened to 98.4 mm, which is similar to that of SUBARU BOXER 6-cylinder petrol engine (EZ30), while the petrol engine (EJ20) has 113.0 mm. This has led to a 61.3 mm reduction in engine block length for even more compact design. BOXER Diesel H4 (EE20) BOXER Petrol H4 (EJ20)
Semi-closed deck: The block design uses the semi-closed deck type that has proven its durability in the turbocharged petrol models. This increases rigidity around the head gasket mating areas. Metal matrix composite journal: All 5 main bearings (journals) in the cylinder block incorporate metal matrix composite journals (which are inserted during the casting process), resulting in superior levels of quietness due to high rigidity and similarity in thermal expansion ratio to that of crankshaft.
Metal Matrix Composite Journals Extra cooling channels: Cooling slits have been given between the cylinder bores to operate as water cooling channels, thus improving cooling performance. - Pistons High strength materials have been used to withstand the high combustion pressures of the diesel engine. Cooling channels within the pistons have been incorporated, with engine oil 5
squirted via oil jets, which enhances piston cooling. Cooling Channel
Combustion Chamber
- Connecting rods The large ends of the connecting rods feature an asymmetrical profile, which increases precision during assembly and in roundness of the surface connecting the crankpin for reduced friction. It has also contributed to minimizing the rotational path, thus allowing an extended piston stroke inside the compact cylinder block.
7. Engine mounting system
A liquid-filled engine mounting system has been employed for even less vibration and better handling performance.

Use of this heater guarantees heating performance immediately after starting the vehicle and in regions of extremely cold temperatures
2. Combined audio/DVD navigation system (Optional for 2.0D Sport model)
Impreza 2.0D: Chassis/Body
1. Subaru Dynamic Chassis Control Concept (Subaru DC )
(1) The combination of superb steering response, a flexible chassis, and greatly improved road-hugging performance in the rear suspension provides the driver with a wholly pleasurable driving experience. (2) Improved road holding of the tyres and supple absorption of road bumps provide superior ride and comfort. (3) The whole chassis package provides a comfortable passenger compartment for the driver and all passengers, and an easy to access luggage space. - With the aim of achieving new Subaru driving with comfort and reliability, the chassis has dramatically evolved daily comfort, reliability, and ease of driving on the basis of a new chassis concept, the Subaru Dynamic Chassis Control Concept (Subaru DC3).
2. Suspension
- A strut-type suspension system, developed and perfected over many years at Subaru, has been adopted for the front suspension. In addition to improvements in linear controllability and stability together with improved ride and comfort, overall weight has been reduced due to the integration of component parts. - A newly developed double wishbone suspension system has been adopted for the rear suspension. In addition to providing excellent stability and reduced component size, a substantially large and easy to access luggage space has been achieved by lowering the suspension further below the floor. Additionally, attaching the suspension to the body via a sub-frame suppresses shocks from the road surface and similar factors to provide excellent riding comfort and improved noise reduction. - With the addition of a diesel engine to the Impreza 2.0D and 2.0D Sport, and specialised tuning of dampers, stabilisers, and springs to increase spring rate, we have improved the direct feeling of steering, the road-hugging properties of tyres, and riding comfort, while also achieving speedy driving performance.
3. Brakes
- A highly reliable brake system that furnishes a feeling of complete safety when used on all types of road surfaces, and in all driving and weather conditions has been adopted in order to provide all drivers no matter their driving skills with a pleasant and satisfactory driving experience. <Tie-rod type tandem brake booster> A tie-rod type system booster that minimises expansion of the booster shell while generating brake pressure has been adopted. <ABS with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD)> - The standard ABS provides both braking performance that prevents early wheel lock-up and steerability. EBD is also included in order to provide optimal braking force to each wheel according to passenger and cargo weight. - 16-inch front disc brakes have been adopted for the Impreza 2.0D and 2.0D Sport. Additionally, a mechanical negative-pressure pump has been adopted and booster characteristics have been optimised, to stabilize braking force and improve brake feeling.
4. Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) system
- Vehicle Dynamics Control System, which assists the superior driving stability of symmetrical AWD, is standard on all models. Fed by information gathered by sensors that monitor drivers intention and vehicle/road conditions the system reduces the risk of lateral slipping (VDC: vehicle dynamics control) and sustains the traction of all wheels (TCS: traction control) by regulating engine power and applying brakes to individual wheels precisely. Thanks to this accurate and highly responsive system, the rear LSD is no longer needed and replaced by the TCS function. Due to this change, the TCS function remains in operation even while the VDC cut-off switch is turned on. The ABS (anti-lock brake system) is now integrated in the VDC control unit.
5. Steering system
- A pinion electronic power steering system has been adopted. Assist characteristics have been optimised in consideration of the use of a diesel engine and 17-inch tyres, resulting in a simple and direct steering feeling. 15
6. Vibration/Noise countermeasures
- Various measures have been taken to improve sound insulation including strengthening of sound insulation characteristics in the area around the toe board, as well as adding insulation in front of the passenger seat foot space and felt to areas around the floor tunnel, and thickening the floor mats. - In order to further reduce noise while driving, mud guards have been equipped as standard inside the rear tyre housings. - In addition to the supple ride comfort and highly quiet driving characteristics of the chassis based on the Subaru DC3, low-noise characteristics have been achieved, such as transmission innovations that have reduced vibration and sound, and the essentially low-vibration characteristics of the Horizontally-Opposed Engine, resulting in a vehicle interior that is exceptionally quiet while driving.
7. Body
- Ring-Shaped Reinforcement Frame The unique Subaru body structure features not only the ring-shaped frame forms around each pillar, but also the complete openings of both rear and front doors are reinforced with a similar additional ring-shaped formation. This structure was used as a base for the new Impreza to which we optimised body construction by adding the most advanced impact absorption technology as well as applying various types of high-strength steel plates where they will be most effective in order to provide a safe, secure, and comfortable driving experience. This has also resulted in a reduction of overall vehicle weight. - Sash doors Applying the basic philosophy underlying Subarus world-renowned ring-shaped reinforcement frame, doors with sashes were adopted to achieve a high degree of balance between rigidity, strength, and light weight together with an enlarged door opening. The body structure offers both a high level of rigidity, which is directly related to improved driving performance and comfort, and also superior collision safety to protect occupants in case of an accident. - Improvement of aerodynamic performance Improvements to aerodynamic performance in several locations, such as the addition of an under cover beneath the floor, have improved fuel efficiency. In addition, on the 2.0D Sport, a rear bumper cover has been added to reduce the gap between the muffler and bumper, improving the flow of air around the tyre housings. - Reduction in weight Lightweight aluminium alloy wheels have been adopted, and a flat tire repair kit has been included in place of a spare tyre. Other weight reduction measures have also been adopted, such as a simplification of the inner structure of the turbo air intake duct.
Impreza 2.0D: Safety
1. Collision safety for all directions
- Using the ring-shaped reinforcement fame, with its reputation for safety, as a base, Subaru further increased collision safety performance for the front, rear, and both sides. This was especially important for the rear where sufficient collision absorption capability had to be ensured even as the size of the overhang was reduced. In order to achieve this, a rational structure was adopted to absorb and disperse impact energy efficiently throughout the body. 16
2. Improved safety features around the doors
- A new structure has been adopted to ensure a high degree of protection through impact absorption features for side collisions and also to permit easy escape for occupants. <Structure to prevent being trapped> A structure has been adopted to prevent occupants from being trapped by ensuring that both front and rear doors can still be opened after a collision. <Remote cable connection> The doorknob and latch are connected with a cable to ensure that doors can be opened when occupants are escaping the car. <Rear door catcher mechanism> A catcher has been added to the door lock striker near the side sill that prevents excessive door deformation and suppresses incursion of the doors during side collisions. This feature improves collision safety and reduces the overall vehicle weight.
3. Improved rear end safety features
- A new structure has been adopted in which the rear frame height is the same as that of the normal height of the front bumper of passenger vehicles. This layout functions to absorb and disperse weight during a collision and also to allow the frame to gradually absorb crushing impacts from the rear end of the car.
4. Pedestrian protection
- The hood frame structure and material, wiper structure and other components have been optimised to provide efficient energy absorption during collisions. These features lessen the impact to pedestrians in during collisions.
5. Powertrain structure that improves impact absorption
- The Horizontally-Opposed engine and vertical transmission effectively reduce injuries to occupants during a front-end collision. The engine and transmission are designed to drop down along the body floor surface in order to prevent incursion into the interior of the vehicle and decrease the possibility of secondary injuries to the occupants.
6. SRS side airbags and SRS curtain airbags (Standard on all models)
- SRS side and curtain airbags greatly contribute to reducing injuries to occupants during side collisions by greatly increasing the protected area resulting in a significant improvement to collision safety features.
7. Safety pedals
- A safety structure has been adopted for the brake and clutch pedals in order to reduce injuries to the lower body of the driver.
8. Active head rests (Equipped on all standard seats except for the 2.0D Sport)
- Headrests are moved forward to quickly cradle the head.

1. Subaru Forester 2.0D and Impreza 2.0D The Subaru Boxer Diesel has garnered enthusiastic accolades since it became available in both the Legacy and Outback for the European market in the spring of 2008. Now mounted on the Forester and Impreza, the new and improved Boxer Diesel has adopted the closed-type DPF (diesel particulate filter), and comes with a newly developed six-speed manual transmission, further improving the vehicles fuel economy and emission control. Forester 2.0D Featuring high levels of versatility and comfort, the Forester is a crossover SUV that not only offers safe and stable driving performance that is enhanced by Subarus unique Symmetrical AWD (allwheel-drive) system, but it also excels in environmental friendliness. The Forester 2.0D model boasts the lowest CO2 emission level (167 g/km) in the compact SUV category.
Impreza 2.0D The Impreza incorporates three core Subaru values: sophisticated styling; useful and convenient packaging; and a quality ride. Now with the addition of the Subaru Boxer Diesel, the six-speed manual transmission, and a finely tuned suspension, the 5-door hatchback Impreza 2.0D model offers agile and sporty drivability, comfort and advanced safety, along with environmental features. Subaru Boxer Diesel The Subaru Boxer Diesel is characterized by compactness and low weight, which are enabled by the high rigidity afforded by the Horizontally-Opposed engine design and through the use of an aluminum alloy cylinder block. Another key feature is its quietness, made possible by the layout of the opposed pistons that cancel out inertia forces and create smooth rotations, which, as a result, reduces vibrations. On top of this, the Subaru Boxer Diesel delivers excellent acceleration response, enabling sporty driving while offering outstanding fuel economy with reduced emissions.
