ACTIVITY-BASED REMOTE
Congratulations on the purchase of a TC 30! More than just another remote control, this innovative product combines all the commands needed to operate your home entertainment system into logical, easy-to-use Activities. For example, an activity puts the buttons needed to Watch TV or Listen to FM Radio together, making it simple for anyone to operate even the most sophisticated system without having to worry about which remote to use or which button to press. The TC 30s activity-based system lets the remote operate based on the way you use your system, and the automated setup wizards do all the programming for you. This User Manual shows you how to navigate the basic online setup process, customize your TC 30 to your home theater system, and use it in normal operation. If you have any questions about the information and instructions in this manual, a wide range of Help options are available on the TC 30 Web site. NOTE: The images shown in the TC 30 LCD screens in this manual are samples that represent a typical system configuration. The screen displays in your remote may vary based on the way you set up the remote for the specific component Devices in your system and the way you program any Activities. The images shown for computer screens and Web pages may also vary depending on your specific computer, its operating system and Web browser, and as we continually improve the TC 30 Web site.
Introduction
The TC 30 is an Internet-powered, universal remote control that can control most devices that respond to infrared (IR) signals. Configuring your TC 30 is simple: 1. Connect the TC 30 to your computer using the supplied USB cable. 2. Install the TC 30 software on your computer. 3. Follow the prompts to tell the software what devices are in your entertainment system. This enables the TC 30 Web site to send the correct remote codes back to your TC 30. If one of your devices is not in the TC 30 Web sites database, the TC 30 can learn those codes and add them to your configuration. 4. Once you have set the remote for your devices, you will be guided through setup for Activities by indicating which devices are used to control specific features, such as the volume, within that Activity. An Activity is a set of commands sent by the TC 30 to turn on the necessary devices and control them. Once you have selected an Activity, each button on the TC 30 is automatically configured for the devices used in that Activity. Example: The Watch Television Activity sends commands to your entertainment system to turn on the Devices, such as a cable or satellite settop, your audio system and, of course, the video display used when you watch television, based on the answers you selected during the online setup process. The Activity system then assigns button functions to the correct device, so that the Volume controls the audio system, and the Channel Up/Down commands are sent to the proper source. At the end of the setup process, the Web site will download a unique configuration to your TC 30, customized to the components you own and the way you use them. You may return to the TC 30 home page as often as you like by simply connecting the TC 30 to your computer so that you may update the TC 30s internal software and firmware, customize any of your TC 30s features, add more entertainment devices and program new Activities.

Setup and Configuration
Battery Installation and Charging
The TC 30s battery must be fully charged before you begin to use it. To insert the battery, gently push down on the battery cover latch on the bottom of the unit and pull the cover toward you. Insert the battery with the label side up and three gold contacts at the top of the battery compartment. To replace the battery cover, insert the two tabs in their slots in the bottom of the case and snap the cover into place. Plug the connector on the charging transformer into the bottom of the charging cradle and run the cable inside the channels provided so that the charging cradle sits flat. You may run the cable out through either the bottom or the top of the cradle. Be sure to remove any protective film covering the well of the charging cradle and then connect the transformer to an AC outlet. The blue LED will light to confirm that power is connected. Place the TC 30 in the well of the cradle so that it sits firmly. You will hear a beep when the TC 30 is placed in the charging cradle, and again when it is picked up. You may change the setting to turn this beep off by clicking on Remote Preferences at the TC 30 home page and then clicking on Settings. Allow at least twelve hours for the initial charge time. When the remote is being charged, the LCD and backlight will light up, but you may turn the lighting off by pressing the Glow Button F. During normal use, the TC 30 will remind you when the battery power is low, with a message on the LCD screen. The battery indicator in the upper right corner of the LCD Screen 7 will also turn red and flash when the battery power is about to run out. The battery level icon on the LCD screen will flash while the battery is charging. It will show a full battery level indication when charging is complete.
The Setup Process
The general setup instructions for the initial installation and configuration of the TC 30 software and for connecting your TC 30 to the Internet through your computer are found in the Installation Guide that was packed with your TC 30. If you have misplaced it, you may download a copy from the Product Support section of our Web site at www.harmankardon.com. Once the software is installed on your computer, you will be taken to the TC 30 Internet site. If the TC 30 Login page does not appear, try the following, depending on your computer type: For computers using Microsoft Windows, click on the Start button, and then click on Programs. When the list of programs appears, highlight Harman Kardon and then click on Harman Kardon TC 30 Remote. For Macintosh computers, open your Web browser and enter http://www.macTC30.com. Follow the on-screen instructions to create a free account for your TC 30, create an initial configuration for your remote and take advantage of the other features available on the TC 30 Web site. Step 1: Create Your TC 30 Account
After the TC 30 is connected to a computer with the TC 30 software properly installed and an open Internet connection, you should be taken to the TC 30 home page. If there is a problem with the Internet connection, follow the instructions that will appear on your computer screen. IMPORTANT NOTE ON INTERNET CONNECTIVITY: If you experience problems connecting to the TC 30 Web site because your Internet connection requires the use of a proxy connection, as may be the case in some corporate and institutional/educational networks, you will need to change a setting in the TC 30 software, as outlined below. Contact your system administrator, if necessary, for the proxy name or address information and assistance, if needed. 1. Right-click on the HK icon in the System Tray or Desktop. Depending on your computers configuration, you will typically find it at the very bottom of the screen toward the lower right side. 2. When the pull-up options appear, click on Preferences. 3. A dialog box will open. Click on the Enable Network Proxy Box. 4. Enter the information for the proxy address or name in the Proxy Host box, and the port number (usually 80) in the Proxy Port box. 5. Click OK to activate the proxy information and close the Window. 6. Click on the HK icon again and click on OPEN to restart the software. Note that some corporate and institutional networks may employ strict security systems that prohibit access to Internet sites such as those used by the TC 30. If you are unable to connect to the TC 30 Web site after following the steps shown above, contact your system administrator, help desk, ISP or Harman Kardon customer service. 7
Step 2: Complete the Online Setup Process
After creating a TC 30 login, the online setup process will begin. Follow the instructions step by step, as they are shown on your computer screen. 1. Login: This is where you establish the login and password for your TC 30 account. It is always a good idea to save that information should you need it, although you will also receive a confirmation e-mail for your records. If you own more than one TC 30, please note that a separate account ID is required for each unit. If you already own a Harmony brand remote, please use a different login ID for your TC 30. 2. Check Connection: This step will automatically check to make sure your computer and the TC 30 are communicating properly with each other and our Web site. If there are connection problems, follow the suggested steps; if you are using a network where proxy information is required, follow the steps shown above. 3. Set Up Devices: This is where you select the devices used in your system so that their remote codes may be sent to the TC 30. Before proceeding, make sure you have the brand and model number for each product you will be programming into the TC 30. 4. Set Up Activities: Based on the Devices you have selected, this step will guide you through the creation of Activities that make it easy to control the multiple Devices used for tasks such as watching TV or a DVD, or listening to AM or FM radio or a CD, or using a portable music player. You will be asked to select which Device controls tasks such as channel selection, mute and volume when more than one device in the Activity has those capabilities. (For example, this is where you select whether the channel up/down codes from a cable or satellite box are used, rather than those on the video display.) 5. Update Remote: When you have completed the configuration process for Devices and Activities, follow the steps shown in this section to download the codes and settings from the Web site to your remote. Once you have a bit of experience with the way the TC 30 operates in your system, you may wish to fine-tune the settings, the way buttons appear or many other ways in which the TC 30 works. To customize your remote at any time, simply reconnect it to your computer and follow the steps in the appropriate section of the Web site. Complete information on the many options available to you are shown in the Customizing Your TC 30 section of this manual. Should you encounter a problem during the setup process, use the Troubleshooting or Help areas available from the home page of the TC 30 Web site.

While an Activity is in use, you may operate the full set of controls for any Device in your system by pressing the Device Button 4 at any time and selecting the component you wish to control. However, if you leave an Activity to directly select and control a Device, when you reselect an Activity, the Power commands may turn some devices off. In this case, press the Help Button 5 to synchronize the power-on status of each Device in the Activity. You may also totally disable the automatic Power On function by clicking on Remote Preferences at the TC 30 home page and then clicking on Settings.
Viewing the Status and Navigation Bars
The Status bar that normally appears at the top of the LCD screen provides you with important information about the TC 30s operation. Date and time. The TC 30s internal clock is set from the master clock on our Web site, reflecting the time zone you selected during setup. You may change the time-display format by clicking on Remote Preferences at the TC 30 home page and then clicking on Settings. A USB plug icon appears when the remote is connected to your computer. The Transmit indicator appears when infrared (IR) commands are being sent to your devices. The Battery indicator shows the status of the TC 30s battery. When only one of the green bars is shown, you should recharge your TC 30 by placing it in the charging cradle. When you are using an Activity, its name will be shown in the second line of the Status Bar. The Navigation Bar at the bottom of the LCD screen appears when an Activity is in use or when a specific Device is being controlled. The number of available screens will be shown, along with the number of the current screen page and a reminder that the left/right arrow buttons directly below the screen may be used to move through the available screens for the current Activity or Device.
Displaying On-Screen Help on Your TC 30
A selected Activity may not function properly from time to time when the Devices in the system are not all powered on. Some of the reasons the TC 30 remote can become out of sync with your system are: The TC 30 was not pointed at the devices in your system when the Activity was selected. An object is blocking the line of sight between your TC 30 and your system. The TC 30 is too far away from a Device for the IR signal to be received. A Device was selected for direct control, and then you reselected an Activity. A Device may have been accidentally turned off.
Pressing the Help Button 5 will start a process to resynchronize all the devices in your system. Before pressing the Help Button 5, first make certain that you are pointing the TC 30 at the devices in your system and that there is no obstruction between the remote and the devices. Then: Press the Help Button 5. Answer the questions that appear on the LCD Screen 7 by pressing the appropriate Screen Button 6 for Yes or No. s If you answer No to any question, the TC 30 will resend the necessary command and ask the same question again. The process will continue for all devices in the Activity, and when it is complete, the TC 30 should be synchorized with your devices again.
Types of On-Screen Help Available
You may customize the Help Button 5 on your TC 30 to provide one of the following types of Help dialogues: Smart Help: This setting asks questions to solve problems only with the devices that are part of the specific Activity in use. Full Help: This setting asks questions about all the devices in your system. Select Full Help if some devices are not being controlled the way you want them to and the on-screen Help messages are not asking questions about these devices. To select the type of help you want, click on Remote Preferences at the TC 30 home page and then click on Settings.
The Remote Assistant
The Remote Assistant is a special part of the Help system which provides additional messages to solve any system problems that might occur after you add a new device to your remote or change a devices settings. In most cases, the Remote Assistant will synchronize the devices in your system so that the Devices and Activities operate properly. The default setting is to have the Remote Assistant on, but you may change the setting by clicking on Remote Preferences at the TC 30 Web site and then clicking on Settings. You may also turn the Remote Assistant off directly from the TC 30 by pressing the Screen Button 6 next to System Options and then pressing the Screen Button 6 next to TURN REMOTE ASSISTANT OFF.
Controlling Individual Devices
In addition to controlling the main functions of a Device through an activity, you may also control the complete set of commands for any Device in your system by pressing the Device Button 4 and pressing the Screen Button 6 next to the name of the Device you wish to control. Once a device is selected, the fixed buttons on the TC 30, such as the Mute B, Volume C, Channel Up/Down E, Transport Control Buttons 9 and Device Control Buttons A, will send the proper codes to the specific product being controlled. In addition, the LCD Screen 7 will display other buttons for the functions of the device. To use those commands, press the Screen Button 6 next to the name of the button you wish to press. Since todays sophisticated home entertainment products often have a large number of button functions, many devices have more buttons than will fit on one page of the LCD Screen 7. When this happens, the Navigation Bar at the bottom of the LCD Screen 7 will tell you how many button screen pages are used by the currently selected device, and which page you are on. Press the Page Left/Right Buttons 8 to move through the screens. You may change which of the buttons on the TC 30 control any function of a Device by changing the settings in the Devices section of the TC 30 Web site, as shown in the Customize Your TC 30 section of this manual. You may also rename a button that appears in the LCD screen and further customize the interaction of the TC 30 with a Device in that area of the Web site.
System Options
The System Options Activity allows you to turn the Remote Assistant on or off, set the time and date for your TC 30 or start a Slide Show programmed into your TC 30. To access one of these options, press the Activities Button 3 and then press the Screen Buttons 6 next to the System Options. Select the System Option you wish to adjust with the Screen Buttons 6. To set the time, press the Screen Buttons 6 next to the appropriate setting as the TC 30 steps through the year, month, day and time options. Within each settings group, press the Page Left/Right Buttons 8 as indicated at the bottom of the screen display to show more options. When you have completed any changes in the System Options area, press the Screen Buttons 6 next to the Im Done line in the screen.
Customizing Your TC 30
Customization of the features and controls for your TC 30 is done through the TC 30 Web page. To access the TC 30 Web site home page, first connect your TC 30 to your computer using the enclosed USB cable.
As long as the TC 30 software is installed on a computer connected to the Internet, it will automatically sense the presence of the remote and connect to the Internet. If a dial-up connection is used, connect to your Internet service provider before connecting the TC 30 to the computer. We recommend that you use a high-speed broadband connection, as TC 30 programming functions that use the Internet will take longer with a dial-up connection. The following options are available from the TC 30 home page to customize your remote so that it is fine-tuned specifically for your home entertainment system. Click on an option to begin the customization process.
At the top right side of the home page, as well as on the main page of each subsection of the TC 30 Web site, you will see the following options. 13
Click on Home to return to the home page at any time. Click on My Profile to change the settings for your TC 30 account. Click on Search for a keyword search of the TC 30 Knowledge Base. Click on Support for information on getting help with your TC 30. Click on Connectivity for help in resolving problems connecting your TC 30 to the Web site. Click on Select Language to change the language for the Web site. Click on Logout to end your session. When you have completed any session connection to the TC 30 Web site, regardless of whether or not the TC 30 remote is connected, remember to click on Logout so that all settings are entered and the session is properly closed. Once you are connected to the TC 30 Web site, six options will appear on the left side of the screen to direct you to the part of the site that assists you with different aspects of the TC 30. Roll the on-screen cursor over each of the options to see a brief description of what that section does and then click on the area you wish to use.
Troubleshoot
If a Device does not appear to be operating properly, click on this button to access a wide array of options to help you correct any problems.
Activities
The options in this area of the TC 30 Web site allow you to add a new Activity, edit and customize an existing Activity, or remove an Activity. To add a new Activity to your TC 30, click on Add an Activity and follow the steps that appear. To change the order in which your Activities appear on the TC 30s LCD screen, click on Reorder Activities and follow the steps that appear. To change the settings for a specific Activity, first click on the Activity you wish to edit, and then select from the options that are shown. To view a summary of the settings for an Activity, click on Review the Settings for This Activity. To change which buttons on the TC 30 simulate a specific button on a devices original remote, click on Change the Behavior of Buttons. You will then be able to identify the button on the TC 30 that you wish to reassign and select the new function using a pull-down menu. To change the settings of an Activity, click on Change Options, and select the options you wish to change. Here you may change the settings for the appearance of the Remote Assistant, having the TC 30 automatically start the activity when it is selected or stop when you exit the activity, and whether or not you wish to have the TC 30 turn off Devices that are not part of a selected Activity. To change the name of an existing Activity, click on Rename and follow the instructions that appear. This option allows you to differentiate Activities with similar functions from one another. For example, if you have a cable or satellite box as well as a TV with built-in HDTV tuning, you may create two Watch TV activities with different settings and name one Watch Cable TV and the other Watch HDTV. If you are having trouble with the way in which an Activity operates, click on Troubleshoot and use the options that appear to solve the problem. To delete an existing Activity, click on Remove This Activity and follow the instructions that appear.
Devices
The options in this area allow you to add a new device for the TC 30 to control, to change the characteristics of a device, to troubleshoot problems you may have in controlling a device, or to delete a device. To add a new device for control by your TC 30, click on Add a Device and follow the steps that appear. To change the settings for a device that is already programmed into your TC 30, first click on the button for that device and choose the desired option from the listing on the next page that appears. The specific options may vary from one device to another, as all settings are not applicable to every device. Among the options that you will see are the ability to do the following: 14
To change the name of an existing Device, select Rename and follow the instructions that appear. To adjust the settings for the way in which inputs are selected, select Adjust Inputs and follow the instructions that appear. This setting will not always be shown, as some devices do not have multiple inputs. To adjust the way in which power on/off commands are sent to a device, select Adjust Power Settings and follow the instructions that appear. Certain devices require you to fine-tune the speed at which remote commands are sent from a remote to the device, or to otherwise change the timing parameters of remote commands. If a device does not work properly with your TC 30, incorrect command speed/delay settings may be involved, and you may adjust those settings for proper operation by selecting Adjust the Delays and following the instructions that appear. NOTE: Before changing these settings you may wish to write down the initial delay times, as incorrect adjustment of these settings may cause incorrect operation of a Device. To change the way in which the TC 30 simulates the operation of a devices original remote, or to customize the appearance of buttons on the TC 30s LCD screen, select Customize Device Commands and follow the steps that appear. Since many brands use different remote commands for similar device types, it is possible that your TC 30 may be programmed with the correct brand name, but with commands that are not appropriate for the specific device you wish to control. If a device does not appear to be responding properly to commands sent by the TC 30, you may check that the commands are correct by selecting Confirm Infrared Commands and following the steps that appear. Note that you will need the original remote control from the product in order to complete this process. Although the TC 30s remote code data base is among the most complete, it is possible that a secondary command from the original remote is not available. You may program any missing codes for a device into your TC 30 by selecting Learn Infrared Commands and following the steps that appear. Note that you will need the original remote control from the product in order to complete this process. If you wish to clear all commands and settings for a specific device from your TC 30 and start the setup process for a device from the beginning, select Redo Setup and follow the steps that appear. If the TC 30 is not controlling a Device properly, click on Advanced Settings and use the options there to fine-tune the TC 30s performance. The settings here are for advanced users and are not required for most systems. If you are having trouble with the way in which a device operates with the TC 30, select Troubleshoot and use the options that appear to solve the problem. To delete an existing Device, click on Remove This Device and follow the instructions that appear. In some cases, you may have more than one device of the same type in your system. To simplify setup by patterning the way the TC 30 controls a new device based on the way you have already established the settings for another product, select Set Up This Device Based on a Similar Device and follow the instructions that appear.

Figure 5 Once the first VIDEO MAIN menu is displayed with the on-screen cursor pointing to SOURCE, press the / Navigation Buttons D until the name of the input you wish to change the settings for is shown. At the same time, any video input name previously changed to individualize the source setting will be shown on the TITLE line. To change the title, go back to the IN/OUT SETUP menu. Once the source to be adjusted has been selected, press the / Navigation Buttons D until the on-screen cursor is pointing to SOURCE TYPE as the two lines below the TITLE line are informational only, and their setting may not be adjusted in this menu. The VIDEO IN-PORT line shows the video input jacks used for this input. If AUTO has been selected, the display will alternate between AUTO and the actual active input. The VIDEO PROCESS line shows whether the system is in the Bypass, Video Conversion or Faroudja video processing mode. Note that the FAROUDJA setting must be enabled for the input being adjusted through the IN/OUT MENU in order for the settings available on this menu and the ADVANCED CONFIGURATION menus to be active.

line, you are able to change the setting for the output aspect ratio. In most cases, the default setting of ORIGINAL provides the best result, but if the combination of program material, input source device capabilities and the adjustments available on your video display do not provide the desired picture format, press the / Navigation Buttons D to experiment with the six available options. ADJUST 1 will stretch a 4:3 letterbox input vertically so that it fills a 16:9 screen. ADJUST 2 will apply a nonlinear horizontal stretch of a full-screen 4:3 input to a 16:9 screen. When this option is chosen, objects will appear to be a bit fatter, due to the stretch. ADJUST 3 will process a 2.35:1 image that is formatted with a 4:3 letterbox and vertically stretch it to fill a 16:9 screen, but it will also crop the left and right sides of the image. ADJUST 4 will process a 2.35:1 image that is formatted with a 4:3 letterbox and vertically stretch it to fill a 16:9 screen, with nonlinear horizontal processing so that the full image appears on the screen. To accomplish this, you will find that objects on the far left and right sides of the screen may appear to be skinnier than normal. ADJUST 5 will apply a stretch to fit 4:3 fullscreen images to fill a 16:9 screen. ADJUST 6 is an automatic mode that will apply the processing from ADJUST 3 to a letterbox input or ADJUST 2 to a full-screen 4:3 input. Once settings are made on the VIDEO MAIN menu, you may either return to the MASTER MENU or proceed to either of the two ADVANCED CONFIGURATION setting menus. The options on those pages are set by your choice on the SOURCE TYPE line, but you may change one or more of the settings to customize your video presentation. To return to the MAIN MENU, press the / Navigation Buttons D so that the onscreen cursor is pointing to BACK TO MASTER MENU and press the OK/Enter Button E or the Set Button. To change the settings on the ADVANCED CONFIGURATION menus, press the / Navigation Button D so that the on-screen cursor is pointing to ADVANCED CONFIG SET and press the OK/Enter Button E or the Set Button q. The first page of the ADVANCED CONFIGURATION menus (Figure 6) will appear on screen. Advanced Configuration Settings The Advanced Configuration Settings may be used to change the individual items that make up the default profile for each video input. You may change none, one or as many of the settings as you wish, to create the on-screen image that you prefer. As with all of the video settings, you can't "hurt" anything by experimenting with the settings, and while the defaults represent the result of extensive lab testing with a variety of display types, input sources and test signals, there is no "right" or "wrong" setting other than the ones that look best to you. The settings that are available on PAGE 1 of the ADVANCED CONFIGURATION menus (Figure 6) are all On/Off settings. On that page, use the / Navigation Buttons D to move the on-screen cursor next to the line for the setting you wish to change. Then, press the / Navigation Buttons D to turn the setting on or off.
Figure 30 To provide the maximum flexibility, channel output level adjustments may be made either with or without the internal test tone, and when the tone is in use, it may be programmed to automatically circulate among the active channels or to only move from one channel to the next on your command. When the CHANNEL ADJUST menu appears, we recommend that you first run the test tone once in the automatic mode to verify that the speakers have been properly connected. To do this, press the / Navigation Buttons D again until the cursor is on the TEST TONE line and then press the / Navigation Buttons D until AUTO is in highlighted video. The test tone will then circulate among all channels for five seconds at each position. As the test tone circulates, the cursor will flash as it moves to each position, to indicate where the tone should be coming from. If the tone is heard from a different speaker than the one indicated on the menu screen, turn the AVR 745 off using the Main Power Switch A and check the speaker wiring or connections to external power amplifiers to make certain that each speaker is connected to the correct output terminal. When you have verified that all speakers are connected properly, turn the AVR 745 on and return to this menu to resume the channel adjustment procedure. If any speaker connections were changed, we also recommend that you rerun EzSet/EQII before making any manual calibration adjustments. After checking for speaker placement, let the test noise circulate again, and listen to see which channels sound louder than the others. Using the front left speaker as a reference, press the / Navigation Buttons D on the remote to bring all speakers to the same volume level. The test noise circulation will pause on the channel being adjusted to give you time to make the adjustment. When you release the button, the circulation will resume after five seconds. Continue to adjust the individual channels until the volume level sounds the same from each speaker. Adjustments should be made with the / Navigation Buttons D on the remote only, NOT the main volume controls. If you are using a sound-pressure level (SPL) meter for precise level adjustment, set the volume so that the meter reads 75dB, C-Weighting Slow.
Page 38
To adjust the output level, press the / Navigation Buttons D until the desired level is shown in the display or on the screen. Once the buttons are released, the test noise will begin to circulate again in five seconds. When all channels have the same output level, press the Screen Button 6 next to TEST again to complete the process. NOTE: Output level adjustment with the test tone is not available in the Surround Off modes. In addition to the controls for selecting channels and the test tone operation, the settings on this menu also allow you to reset the level settings to either the factory default of 0dB or the settings that were entered by running EzSet/EQII. To reset all channel levels to 0dB, press / Navigation Buttons D so that the cursor is pointing to the LEVEL RESET line and then press the / Navigation Buttons D once so that ON appears in highlighted video. To return to the settings established by EzSet/EQII, even if you have made manual changes to the output trims using the steps shown above, press / Navigation Buttons D so that the cursor is pointing to the EZSET SETTINGS line and then press the / Navigation Buttons D once so that ON appears in highlighted video. Remember that after turning the EzSet/EQII settings back on, you must return to this menu line and change the setting to OFF if you wish to make any manual trim adjustments. The final setting in this menu enables you to have the output levels remain the same for all inputs or to be adjusted differently for each (or any) input. While most listeners prefer to keep the same output levels for all sources, you may wish to raise or lower some channels, particularly the subwoofer output, for a specific source (such as a CD) that is primarily used for music playback. To enter individual settings for a specific channel, first make sure that you have run EzSet/EQII and/or made any desired manual trim adjustments, to set a baseline for all channels. Next, press the / Navigation Buttons D to move the cursor to the CH ADJUST line and then press the / Navigation Buttons D so that INDEPENDENT appears. After that is done, press the Menu Button A or the OSD Button to exit the menu system and then select the input for which you wish to enter different level settings by using either the Input Source Selector 7 on the front panel or the buttons on the TC 30 or ZR10 remote that are used to select an input source dWh. Next, return to the CHANNEL ADJUST submenu using the steps outlined above. When all changes to the Channel Output levels have been made, press the / Navigation Buttons D until the cursor is on the BACK TO MANUAL SETUP menu and then press the OK/Enter Button E on the TC 30 or the Set Button so that you may make any other adjustments to the system parameters. If the changes just made complete the manual adjustments needed, press the Menu Button A or the OSD Button to exit the menu system and resume normal system operation. Additional Input Adjustments After one input has been configured, go back to the IN/OUT SETUP line on the MASTER MENU (Figure 1) and enter the settings for each input that you will use. In most cases, only the video input, digital input and surround mode will be different from one input to the next, while the speaker type, crossover frequency, Night mode and output level settings will usually be the same and may be quickly entered by entering the same data used for the original input. Once the settings outlined on the previous pages have been made, the AVR 745 is ready for operation. While there are some additional settings to be made, these are best done after you have had an opportunity to listen to a variety of sources and different kinds of program material. These advanced settings are described on pages 49 and 50 of this manual. In addition, any of the settings made in the initial configuration of the unit may be changed at any time. As you add new or different sources or speakers, or if you wish to change a setting to better reflect your listening taste, simply follow the instructions for changing the settings for that parameter, as shown in this section. You may also select an EQ Design directly, or turn the EQ filters off by following the instructions on page 48. Having completed the setup and configuration process for your AVR 745, you are about to experience the finest in music and home theater listening. Enjoy!
The first number in the display message indicates how many discrete front-channel signals are present.
If you have not already configured an input for a digital source using the on-screen menus, as shown on page 22, first select the input using the remote or front-panel controls, as outlined in this manual. Next, press the Devices Button 4, followed by the Screen Button 6 at the top of the row of buttons on the left side of the TC 30, to the left of the A/V receiver image on the LCD screen. After the list of options displayed in the LCD Screen 7 changes, press the Screen Button 6 to the left of Setup Menu. After the options change, press the Screen Button 6 to the right of Digital Input and then press the / Navigation Buttons D on the TC 30 remote or the / Navigation Button H on the front panel to choose any of the OPTICAL or COAXIAL inputs, as they appear in the Upper Display Line # or on-screen display. When the digital source is playing, the AVR 745 will automatically detect which type of digital data stream is being decoded and display that information in the Upper Display Line #. When both a digital and an analog connection are made between a source device and the AVR, the digital input is the default. If the digital stream is not present or is interrupted, the unit will automatically switch over to the analog inputs for the selected source. If you wish to disable the auto-polling feature, you may do so by following the instructions shown for the IN/OUT SETUP menu (Figure 2), as shown on page 22. Digital Bitstream and Surround Mode Indications When a digital source is playing, the AVR 745 senses the type of bitstream data that is present, and automatically selects the proper surround mode. For example, DTS bitstreams will cause the unit to switch to DTS decoding, and Dolby Digital bitstreams will enable Dolby Digital decoding. When the unit senses PCM data from CDs or LDs, you may select any of the standard Dolby or DTS surround modes or Logic 7. Since the range of available surround modes is dependent on the type of digital data that is present, the AVR 745 shows you what type of signal is present to help you understand the choice of modes.
A 3 tells you that separate front left, center and front right signals are available. This will be displayed for Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Digital EX and DTS 5.1 or DTS-EX programs. A 2 tells you that separate front left and right signals are available, but there is no discrete center channel signal. This will be displayed for Dolby Digital bitstreams that have stereo program material. A 1 tells you that there is only a mono channel available in the Dolby Digital bitstream. The middle number in the display message indicates how many discrete surround channel signals are present. A 3 tells you that separate, discrete left surround, center surround and right surround signals are present. This is available only on discs with DTS-ES digital audio. A 2 tells you that separate surround left and right signals are available. This will be displayed for Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 programs.
When the connection between a computer and the AVR is made for the first time, or if the USB connection is plugged into a different USB jack on a computer or hub that has not been previously connected to the AVR, you will see a series of pop-up messages from Windows to indicate that the computer is configuring itself for the new device. Since the AVR provides a number of different functions, you may see the Found New Hardware message up to four times, one each for A/V Receiver, Compatible Device, Audio Receiver and Human Interface Device. When all messages have appeared and then cleared the screen, you are almost ready to begin. Before selecting the USB input, first make certain that one of the media players listed above has been opened on the computer. Then you may select the USB input in any of the following ways: To select USB as a source from the front panel, press the Input Source Selector Button 6 until USB appears as the input name in the Upper Display Line C and in the semi-OSD display, if available. The USB Input Source Indicator A will also light up on the front panel. Two options are available for selecting an input source using the TC 30 remote.

Figure 31 The letters inside the boxes tell you which channels are receiving an input signal. Since conventional analog audio is only two channels, the L and R letters will light with any analog source. When a digital source is in use, you will see letters displayed that correspond to the number of channels in the incoming data stream, which may be just the L and R for two-channel PCM or 2.0 Dolby Digital material. When a 5.1 signal is being received, the L/C/R/SL/SR indicators will light, with the LFE indication also being shown when an LFE signal is present. All seven indicators, including the SBL/SBR letters, will light for a 7.1 signal, and a horizontal line is shown to connect the SBL/SBR indicators when a 6.1 source is in use.

The Night mode may be engaged at any time when a Dolby Digital source is playing by pressing the Devices Button 4 on the TC 30, followed by the Screen Button 6 at the top of the row of buttons on the left side of the TC 30, to the left of the AV Receiver image on the LCD screen. After the list of options displayed on the LCD Screen 7 changes, press the Page Left/Right Button 8 to display the next page of options, and press the Screen Button 6 to the left of the word Night. Each press of the button will change the Night mode setting, as shown in the lower third of the on-screen display (except when 720p or 1080i sources are in use). To turn the Night mode off, press the button as described until D-RANGE OFF is shown. The Night mode may also be selected to always be on at either level of compression using the options in the DOLBY SURROUND menu. See page 29 for information on using the menus to set this option. IMPORTANT NOTES ON DIGITAL PLAYBACK: When playing DVDs, please note that even when you have selected a specific digital audio format for playback, an individual disc may change formats or the number of available channels during playback. For example, even if you select a DTS mode for the movie, you may see Dolby Digital in use when the trailers, menus or copyright warnings are playing. This is not a fault with either the AVR or your DVD player, as both are responding to the way the disc was created. When viewing digital television signals, note that the number of audio channels available may vary during the course of a program, depending on the content. For example, while a sports event may have 5.1 sound, the commercials or local station content may be in 2.0. In addition, not all local stations are currently equipped for carrying the 5.1 digital audio signals. This may mean that even though the actual program is produced with 5.1, it may be transmitted in a 2.0 configuration in some areas. Your AVR will automatically change to react to the proper type of audio stream if it is changed by the broadcast station. Although the AVR 745 will decode virtually all current DVD movies, CDs and HDTV sources, it is possible that some future digital sources may not be compatible with the AVR 745. Not all digitally encoded programs contain full 5.1or 6.1-channel audio. Consult the program guide that accompanies the DVD or laser disc to determine which type of audio has been recorded on the disc. The AVR 745 will automatically sense the type of digital surround encoding used and adjust to accommodate it. When a digital source is playing, you may not be able to select some of the analog surround modes such as Dolby Pro Logic II, Dolby Pro Logic IIx, Stereo, Hall, Theater or Logic 7. When a Dolby Digital or DTS source is playing, it is not possible to make an analog recording using the Tape Outputs a and Video 1 Audio Outputs g. However, the digital signals will be passed through to the Digital Audio Outputs abM.
When The Bridge is connected and a compatible iPod properly docked, the iPods menu will be replaced with harman/kardon at the top of the iPods screen and the front panel display and semi-OSD message will show messages that will guide you through the menu and content selection. Multiroom Setup
Once the audio and IR link connections have been made, the AVR 745 needs to be configured for multiroom operation. To change a setting from its factory default, you will use the MULTI-ROOM SETUP menu. With the TC 30, first press the Devices Button 4 on the TC 30 remote and then press the Screen Button 6 next to AV Receiver and press the Menu Button A. With the ZR 10 remote, press the OSD Button to call up the MAIN MENU (Figure 1). Next, press the / Navigation Buttons D so that the cursor is next to MULTI-ROOM, then press the OK/Enter Button E on the TC 30 or the Set Button on the ZR 10. When the MULTI-ROOM SETUP menu (Figure 33) appears, follow the instructions shown below to make any needed configuration adjustments.
* MULTI-ROOM SETUP *
Surround Channel Amplifier Assignment
The AVR 745 is equipped with seven full-power amplifier channels to allow for complete 7.1-channel operation. However, if your system is only configured for 5.1 channels in the main listening room, you may take advantage of the extra two channels by using them to power speakers placed in a second zone location. This enables you to use the multiroom capabilities of the AVR 745 without the cost of an additional, external power amplifier. To change the setting so that the Surround Back amplifiers are fed by the source selected through the Multiroom system rather than the SBL/SBR channels of the main room, make certain that the MULTI-ROOM SETUP menu (Figure 33) is on the screen; then press the / Navigation Buttons D so that the cursor is pointing to the SB AMPS line. Press the / Navigation Buttons D so that MULTI is shown in highlighted video. When this change is made, connect the wires feeding the remote zone speakers to the Surround Back/Multiroom Speaker Outlets E. When the SBL/SBR speakers are set for multiroom operation, you may still configure the AVR 745 for 7.1 modes in the main listening room by making certain that the SURR BACK line in the SPEAKER SIZE menu (Figure 27) is set to SMALL or LARGE, as shown in the instructions on page xx. When that is done, the word MULTI will appear next to the large or small designator to alert you to the fact that the internal SBL/SBR amplifiers are assigned to the multiroom system, and that an optional, external two-channel power amplifier must be connected to the SBL/SBR Preamp Outputs in order to use surround back channel speakers.

Once this setting is made, press the / Navigation Buttons D to select another configuration item on this page, or press the Menu Button A or the OSD Button if you have completed your adjustments to the Multi-room system. Infrared Output Selection The AVR 745 enables you to select which IR input will be used to feed the Full Carrier IR Output B. The factory default setting is the IR signal that is fed to the Multiroom IR Input P, but you may select other options. To change this setting, first make sure the MULTI-ROOM SETUP menu is on the screen, and then press the / Navigation Buttons D so that the cursor is next to CARRIER OUT; then press the OK/Enter Button E on the TC 30 or the Set Button on the ZR 10. Press the / Navigation Buttons D to select one of these options: ZR 10 feeds the signal present at the Multiroom IR Input P to the Full Carrier IR Output B. A-BUS feeds the signal carried back from an optional A-BUS module connected to the AVR to the Full Carrier IR Output B. FRONT feeds the received through the frontpanel Remote Sensor Window F to the Full Carrier IR Output B. When all needed adjustments to the MULTIROOM SETUP menu have been made, press the / Navigation Buttons D until the cursor is pointing to BACK TO MASTER MENU to make changes to other menus, or press the Menu Button A or the OSD Button to exit the menu system and return to normal operation. LCD Screen 7 change, press the Page Left/Right Buttons 8 once and then press the Screen Button 6 next to Multi-Room. When the multiroom system is turned on, you may use the same buttons on either remote that would normally be used to control an AVR function such as volume, source selection, tuner control or the operation of an iPod docked to The Bridge. If any of the input devices are connected to the IR Output C or Full Carrier IR Output B, by either a hard-wire connection or through an optional IR blaster, you may use the Transport Controls on the ZR 10 to operate compatible Harman Kardon products or the appropriate controls that have been programmed for any source device into the TC 30. To turn the system off from the remote room, press the Power Off Button on the ZR 10. Remember that the AVR 745 may be turned on or off from the remote room, regardless of the systems operation or status in the main room. NOTE: When the tuner is selected as the source for the remote zone, any change to the frequency or preset will also change the station being listened to in the main room, if the tuner is in use there. Similarly, if someone in the main room changes the station, the change will also have an impact on the remote room. To turn the multiroom system on from the room where the AVR 745 is located, press the Devices Button 4 on the TC 30 remote and then press the Screen Button 6 next to AV Receiver. When the choices on the LCD Screen 7 change, press the Page Left/Right Buttons 8 once and then press the Screen Button 6 next to MultiRoom. Press the OK/Enter Button E and then press the / Navigation Buttons D to turn the system on.
mode (turned off) in the room where the AVR 745 is located, the light surrounding the front-panel Standby/On Switch 0 will remain blue, rather than amber, and a MULTI-ROOM ON message will be shown in the Lower Display Line D. When the Multiroom system is turned on, the input selected using the Multiroom menu will be fed to the Multiroom Audio/Video Outputs 8L on the rear panel as well as the A-BUS Connector. The volume will be as set in the previous selection, although it may also be adjusted using an optional IR sensor and the ZR 10 remote in the remote location, or the A-BUS keypad, or on the optional audio power amplifier connected to the Multiroom Audio Outputs 8. Although changes to the input source or remote room volume will normally be made using an IR sensor in the remote room that is connected to the AVR, it is also possible to change those settings from the main listening room. This is useful for situations where some or all of the remote rooms do not have an IR sensor, or to take control over the remote room without actually being in that room. In addition to using the MULTI-ROOM menu, as shown on the previous page, you may change the source or volume in the remote zone using the remote. Using the TC 30 remote, press the Devices Button 4 on the TC 30 remote and then press the Screen Button 6 next to AV Receiver. When the choices on the LCD Screen 7 change, press the Page Left/Right Buttons 8 once and then press the Screen Button 6 next to Multi-Room.
