I cannot make calls using a voice command
Try performing the following actions: Verify that your BlackBerry device is connected to the wireless network. If you are using a Bluetooth enabled device, such as a handsfree car kit or wireless headset, verify that the Bluetooth enabled device supports this feature and that you have paired the Bluetooth enabled device with your BlackBerry device. Verify that your keyboard is unlocked. Verify that the language that you use to say voice commands is the same as the voice dialing language that you have set in the language options. Certain languages might not be supported.
My device does not recognize names or numbers in voice commands
Try performing the following actions: Say the first name and the last name of your contact. If your BlackBerry device does not often identify matches, set the matching sensitivity level to reject less. If your device often identifies incorrect matches, set the matching sensitivity level to reject more. Improve voice recognition of numbers.

Undo an AutoText change

To insert a period, press the Space key twice. The next letter is capitalized. To capitalize a letter, hold the letter key until the capitalized letter appears. To type the alternate character on a key, press the Alt key and the character key. To type an accented or special character, hold the letter key and roll the trackball to the left or right. For example, to type , hold U and roll the trackball to the left until appears. Release the letter key when the accented or special character appears. To type a number in a number field, press a number key. You do not need to press the Alt key.

Email messages are not being deleted over the wireless network

In the email reconciliation options, verify that the Delete On field is set to Mailbox & Handheld.
Organizer data is not synchronizing over the wireless network
Try performing the following actions: Verify that your BlackBerry device is connected to the wireless network. Verify that wireless data synchronization is turned on in the address book, calendar, task list, and memo list. If you use the BlackBerry Internet Service, you must use the synchronization tool of the BlackBerry Desktop Manager to synchronize calendar data. Custom address book field data is not appearing on my computer
You can only synchronize the data in a custom address book field with a text field in the email application on your computer. For example, you cannot add a contact's birthday to a custom address book field on your BlackBerry device and synchronize it with the email application on your computer, because the birthday field is a date field in the email application on your computer.
Some characters in calendar entries do not appear correctly after synchronization
If you schedule appointments or meetings on your BlackBerry device that contain special characters or accents, your computer might not support these characters. On your computer, verify that you are using the correct default code page and that the correct font support is installed on your computer. Browser push is designed to push information from a web application to your BlackBerry device as the information becomes available. For example, you can use browser push to receive updates for weather reports, stock quotes, or breaking news. When your device receives an update, a new browser push message might appear in a message list or, an icon on the Home screen or in the application list might change to indicate that new information is available. The web application might also push updated information to your browser cache without notifying you. If information is pushed to your browser cache, the information is available on your device even when your device is not connected to the wireless network. Your device supports different types of browser push messages. Service loading messages and service indication messages include updated information. Other browser push messages include messages that appear in your browser cache.
Turn off browser push
1. In the device options, click Advanced Options. 2. Click Browser Push. 3. Perform one of the following actions: To reject all browser push messages, clear the Enable Push, Enable MDS Push, and Enable WAP Push check boxes. To reject browser push messages through a BlackBerry Enterprise Server or BlackBerry Internet Service, clear the Enable MDS Push check box. To reject browser push messages through WAP gateways, clear the Enable WAP Push check box.

When viewing text directions, click View On Map. To view text directions again, press the Menu key. Click View Directions.

You can set a typing input language to use when you type. The typing input language can be different from the display language. You can only switch typing input methods if the typing input language for your BlackBerry device is Arabic or Russian. 1. In the device options, click Language.

Best practice: Optimizing your device performance
Try to maintain at least 400 KB of available memory on your BlackBerrydevice. To increase the amount of available memory, try deleting items that you do not need from your device. Consider the following guidelines: Delete old email and MMS messages, especially messages with attachments. Delete contacts that are already in your organization's address book. Delete media files from the device memory. Delete applications and languages that you do not use. If you recently upgraded the BlackBerry Device Software over the wireless network, delete the previous version of the BlackBerry Device Software. Clear the browser cache. To use less memory, try changing options for email messages, calendar entries, and media files. Consider the following guidelines: Reduce the amount of time that your device stores email messages and calendar entries. Stop forwarding email messages to your device when your device is connected to your computer. Receive only the first section of long email messages. Store media files on a media card. Reduce the maximum amount of device memory available for all media files. Reduce the minimum amount of device memory available for pictures. If you take a picture, verify that the picture quality is set to Normal. Reduce the picture quality in the browser.
SIM card
Verify that your wireless service provider has set up your SIM card with a SIM card phone book. 1. 2. 3. 4. In the address book, press the Menu key. Click SIM Phone Book. Press the Menu key. Click Copy All To Address Book.
Note: If you try to copy a SIM card contact with a phone number that matches the phone number of a contact that already appears in your address book, your BlackBerry device does not copy the SIM card contact.
Verify that your wireless service provider has set up your SIM card with a SIM card phone book. 1. 2. 3. 4. In the address book, click a contact. Highlight a phone number. Press the Menu key. Click Copy to SIM Phone Book.
If you set your SIM card to store SMS text messages, the SIM card does not delete SMS text messages after the BlackBerry device imports them to a message list. 1. 2. 3. 4. In the device options, click SMS. Set the Leave Messages On SIM Card field to Yes. Press the Menu key. Click Save.
To stop storing SMS text messages on your SIM card, set the Leave Messages On SIM Card field to No. If you set this field to No, SMS text messages on your SIM card are deleted after the device imports them to a message list.
About SIM card security
You can protect your SIM card with a PIN code to add another level of security to your BlackBerry device. If you lock your SIM card with a PIN code, other people cannot use their SIM card in your device. Before you can use your SIM card in another device, you must type the PIN code.
A question mark appears on a slide if your BlackBerry device has not downloaded the slide.
To download the slide, highlight the slide. Press the Menu key. Click Retrieve.
Try performing the following actions: Verify that your BlackBerry device is connected to the wireless network. Verify that wireless data synchronization is turned on in the address book, calendar, task list, and memo list.
Diagonal lines appear on a map when your BlackBerry device loads a new map or when your device is not connected to the wireless network.
If diagonal lines appear for a long period of time, verify that your device is connected to the wireless network.
Try performing the following actions: Verify that your BlackBerry device is compatible with the Bluetooth enabled device. For more information, see the documentation that came with the Bluetooth enabled device. Allow the Bluetooth enabled device to discover your BlackBerry device. In the Bluetooth setup application, click Allow another device to find me. Turn off encryption for Bluetooth connections between your BlackBerry device and the Bluetooth enabled device. In the device options, click Bluetooth. Click a Bluetooth enabled device. Click Device Properties. Change the Encryption field to Disabled. Press the Menu key. Click Save.
Verify that your SIM card is inserted in your BlackBerry device correctly. Verify that you have turned on the connection to the wireless network. Verify that you are connected to your wireless service provider's network. If you switched wireless networks manually, your device remains connected to that wireless network until you select your wireless service provider's network again. If your wireless service provider supports UMA, verify that your connection preference is not set to Wi-Fi Only.

Simply verify that your SIM card and battery are inserted in your device, charge the battery, and complete the setup wizard. After you complete the setup wizard, take some time to explore the features on your device. This guide provides tips and instructions to help you learn the basics quickly.
Set up your device
Insert the SIM card and battery
Your SIM card is a small rectangular plastic card that stores important information about your wireless service. Your SIM card might already be inserted in your BlackBerry device. Press the release button for the battery cover. Slide off the battery cover. If the battery is inserted, remove the battery. If your SIM card is already inserted, proceed to step 11. Slide the SIM card holder door toward its hinges to unlock it. Open the SIM card holder door. Remove the SIM card from any packaging. Place the SIM card into the holder so that the metal contacts on the SIM card face down and the cutoff corner of the SIM card points toward the top of your device. 9. Close the SIM card holder door so that it holds the SIM card flat. 10. Slide the SIM card holder door away from its hinges to lock it. 11. 12. Slide the battery cover back onto the device so that it clicks into place. If the battery is charged, the device turns on. If the device does not turn on, charge the battery.

1. Connect the small end of the travel charger cable to the USB port on the side of your BlackBerry device. 2. If necessary, perform one of the following actions: Insert the plug blade attachment into the power adapter. Fold down the plug blades on the power adaptor. 3. Plug the power adapter into a power outlet. 4. Charge the battery to full power.

Complete the setup wizard
The setup wizard is designed to help you learn about typing, change options to personalize your BlackBerry device, and set up one or more email addresses. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. About email setup options
If you have not already set up an email address, you can use one of following options to set up email. Depending on your wireless service provider, the available options might vary. BlackBerry Internet Service option: Use this email setup option to create a new email address for your device or to associate your device with one or more (up to ten) existing email addresses. This option is most common for individual users. You can set up email using this option by selecting the I want to create or add an email address option in the setup wizard on your device BlackBerry Enterprise Server option: Use this email setup option to associate your device with a Microsoft Outlook work email account, IBM Lotus Notes work email account, or Novell GroupWise work email account and to take advantage of advanced capabilities for wireless data synchronization. If your administrator has provided you with an activation password, you can set up email using this option by selecting the I want to use a work email account with a BlackBerry Enterprise Server option in the setup wizard on your device. If you do not have an activation password, contact your administrator. BlackBerry Desktop Redirector option: Use this email setup option to associate your device with a Microsoft Outlook (Workgroup Installation) email account. You can set up email using this option by installing the BlackBerry Desktop Software and selecting the BlackBerry Desktop Redirector option. If you use this email setup option, you must keep your computer turned on to receive email messages.
Add or create an email address using the setup wizard
1. In the setup wizard, on the email setup screen, select the I want to create or add an email address option. Click Next. 2. Click Next. 3. 4. 5. 6. If necessary, click Update Now. If necessary, click Create New Account. To accept the terms of the license agreement, select the Yes option. Click I Agree. If necessary, type a login user name and password of your choice. Take some time to explore the applications that are available on your BlackBerry device. Here are a few applications to get you started. If necessary, type the passkey for the Bluetooth enabled device on your BlackBerry device. 5. If necessary, type the passkey for the Bluetooth enabled device on the Bluetooth enabled device.
About connecting to a Wi-Fi network
If you are in a Wi-Fi coverage area and if your wireless service plan supports it, you might be able to access services (for example, email service) over a Wi-Fi network. For more information, contact your wireless service provider. You can connect to a Wi-Fi network without saving the connection information, or you can save the connection information in a Wi-Fi profile.
Connect to a Wi-Fi network
By default, new Wi-Fi profiles appear at the bottom of your Wi-Fi profile list. 1. On the Home screen or in the application list, click Set Up Wi-Fi. 2. Perform one of the following actions: Click Scan for Networks. Click a network. Click Manually Add Network. Type the network name. Click Add. 3. Complete the instructions on the screen. 4. On the Wi-Fi Setup Complete screen, perform any of the following actions: To change the order of Wi-Fi profiles, click Prioritize Wi-Fi Profiles. To return to the Wi-Fi Setup Complete screen, press the Escape key. To specify registration information, click Wi-Fi Hotspot Login. To return to the Wi-Fi Setup Complete screen, press the Escape key.
5. Click Finish.
About using your device with a computer
You can install the BlackBerry Desktop Software on your computer and connect your BlackBerry device to your computer to perform any of the following actions: Charge your device. Synchronize organizer data such as contacts, calendar entries, tasks, and memos between your device and your computer. Synchronize certificates between your device and your computer. Back up and restore device data. Transfer files between your device and your computer. Add applications to your device. Set up and manage email message forwarding or wireless calendar synchronization if your administrator has advised you to do so. Set up and manage email message forwarding using the BlackBerry Desktop Redirector to forward email messages from a Microsoft Outlook (Workgroup installation) email account that resides on a Microsoft Exchange Server version 5.5 or later. For more information about synchronizing data, backing up or restoring data, adding applications, or other functions, see the BlackBerry Desktop Software Online Help.

On the Setup Type screen, perform one of the following actions: If you do not want to use the BlackBerry Desktop Software to synchronize certificates between your device and your computer, select the Typical option. Click Next. If you want to use the BlackBerry Desktop Software to synchronize certificates between your device and your computer, select the Custom option. Click Next. In the Certificate Synchronization drop-down list, click This feature, and all subfeatures, will be installed on local hard drive.
6. Complete the instructions on the screen.
7. When the installation is complete, connect the smaller end of the USB cable to the USB port on the side of your device. 8. Connect the larger end of the USB cable to the USB port on your computer. If the BlackBerry Desktop Manager does not open automatically, on the taskbar, click Start > Programs > BlackBerry > Desktop Manager.
About switching devices
You can import data from your current BlackBerry device, Palm device, or Windows Mobile powered device to your new BlackBerry device using the switch device wizard tool of the BlackBerry Desktop Manager. For more information about switching devices, see the BlackBerry Desktop Software Online Help.

Troubleshooting
I cannot connect to a wireless network
Try performing the following actions: Verify that your SIM card is inserted in your BlackBerry device correctly. Verify that you have turned on the connection to the wireless network. Verify that you have turned on the connection to the Wi-Fi network. Verify that you are in a Wi-Fi coverage area. If the Wi-Fi network does not appear in the Wi-Fi setup application and you know the network name, connect to the Wi-Fi network manually. Verify that the connection options in the Wi-Fi setup application are correct. If you have already verified these options, verify that the advanced connection options for the Wi-Fi network are correct.
I cannot associate my device with an email address
Try performing the following actions: On the email setup screen, verify that you have typed all the email address information correctly.
Verify that the email address is associated with a supported email account (for example, a POP3 email account or an IMAP email account). For more information about supported email accounts, contact your wireless service provider. If you are trying to add a Microsoft Outlook or IBM Lotus Notes work email address to your BlackBerry device, in a browser on your computer, log in to the email setup web site using the web page address provided by your wireless service provider and add the work email address. To log in, you must have a login user name and password. You can create a login user name and password in the setup wizard on the email setup screen.
I cannot send or receive messages
Try performing the following actions: Verify that your BlackBerry device is connected to the wireless network. If you are not in a wireless coverage area, your device should send the messages when you return to a wireless coverage area. If you created an email address or added an existing email address to your device using the email setup screen in the setup wizard, verify that you have received an activation message on your device from the BlackBerry Internet Service. If you have not received an activation message (the message might take a short period of time to arrive), in the setup wizard, open the email setup screen to send a service book to your device.
If you have not received a registration message from the wireless network, register your device. In the device options, click Advanced Options. Click Host key. Click Register Now. Routing Table. Press the If you switched devices, verify that you have switched email service to your new device. To switch email service to your new device, in the setup wizard, open the email setup screen. If you created a user name and password when you set up email on your device, type your login information. Press the key. Click Change Device. If you did not create a user name and password when you set up email, complete the instructions on the screen. If the menu item for sending a message does not appear, verify that you have added an email address or a PIN for your contact. Resend the message. Open the message. Press the key. Click Resend. If you use email message filters, verify that the options for email message filters are set correctly.
I cannot make or receive calls
Try performing the following actions: Verify that your BlackBerry device is connected to the wireless network. If you cannot make calls and fixed dialing is turned on, verify that the phone number for your contact appears in your fixed dialing list or turn off fixed dialing.
If you have traveled to another country and you have not changed your smartdialing options, dial the full phone number, including the country code and area code, for your contact. If you are not receiving calls, verify that call blocking and call forwarding are turned off. If your SIM card supports more than one phone number, but you have only one phone number, verify that the phone number is set as your active phone number.
