Wind and weather may prevent top-down driving, but they cant stop the driving pleasure in the BMW 1 Series Convertible. At the press of a button, the top opens and closes fully automatically in 22 seconds, even up to a speed of 50 km/h. Not only does the soft top please the senses with its unsurpassed elegance, its meticulous nish also sets new standards in terms of insulation, winter comfort and acoustics thanks also to the reinforced, heated rear windscreen. While it holds noise and cold at bay effectively, it is just as adept at turning heads particularly if you choose a roof in Anthracite-coloured fabric with Silver effect. Exclusively available for the BMW 1 Series Convertible, it lends the car a unique radiance.

Brake Energy Regeneration. To supply a battery with electrical energy, the generator (alternator) is permanently driven using engine power, which demands additional fuel consumption. Brake Energy Regeneration means the generator usually only generates electricity when the driver takes his foot off the accelerator or the brake previously unused kinetic energy is transformed in coasting mode into electrical energy before being fed into the battery. In this way, electricity is generated while coasting, without consuming fuel.
BMW already offers 30 models with CO2 emissions of 140 g/km and signi cantly less. But thats just for starters. Were carrying on our research with BMW Ef cientDynamics in the quest to bring you more driving pleasure and less emissions.
Electric Power Steering. In comparison with conventional, hydraulic steering systems, the electrical steering only uses energy during actual steering. When the steering wheel position is constant for example, at high speed along the motorway the electric motor is inactive1, 2.

High Precision Injection: Piezo injectors positioned close to the spark plugs allow the four-cylinder engines in the 118i and 120i to ensure lean-burn operation under partial loads. To provide optimum combustion, the fuel is injected at high pressure into the cylinders up to 200 times per fraction of a second. This means that only part of the combustion chamber is filled with an ignitable fuel/air mixture so fuel is used extremely efficiently.

BMW engines are famous for their smoothness, power, free-revving characteristics and also for BMW EfcientDynamics a package of technological features focused on intelligent energy management. Depending on engine variant, features include High Precision Injection, Valvetronic, Brake Energy Regeneration, the Auto Start/ Stop function1 (for all four-cylinder models) and the Optimum Shift Indicator1. Such innovations mean the engines for the BMW 1 Series Convertible set new standards of efciency and dynamics. They also comply with the EU5 emissions standard. BMW 135i. The newly developed BMW TwinPower Turbo six-cylinder in-line engine is the rst in its class to combine a TwinScroll turbocharger with direct High Precision Injection and Valvetronic fully variable valve control. This innovation signicantly cuts fuel consumption while at the same time ensuring impressive performance gures: 225 kW (306 hp), 400 Nm across the 1,200 to 5,000 rpm band, acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds, a top speed of 250 km/h and average fuel consumption of just 8.6 l /100 km. Its a combination with high emotional rewards and rational good sense. And it puts the BMW 135i in a league of its own. BMW 125i. This six-cylinder in-line engine stands out with its intelligent lightweight aluminium and magnesium construction, and also grabs attention with impressive output of 160 kW (218 hp). Key to this is Valvetronic, which provides fully variable control of intake valve lift to deliver a combination of high output and low fuel consumption. In tandem with Double-VANOS, the engine offers unbeatable torque development into the upper reaches of the engine speed range. The BMW 125i completes the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds and accelerates effortlessly to a maximum of 238 km/h. Alongside other BMW EfcientDynamics measures, this technology cuts fuel consumption to an average of just 8.4 l/100 km. BMW 120i. This four-cylinder in-line engine with High Precision Injection develops 125 kW (170 hp) from its 2.0-litre displacement, allowing it to power from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.4 seconds. Maximum speed stands at 220 km/h. High Precision Injection and a leaner fuel/ air mixture in the combustion chambers enable the powerplant to run extremely economically, especially under partial loads. Other BMW EfcientDynamics measures lead to further improvements in fuel consumption, the BMW 120i Convertible burning an average of only 6.8 l /100 km. BMW 118i. The free-revving nature of this four-cylinder in-line engine with High Precision Injection sees it extending beyond 6,000 rpm. Developing 105 kW (143 hp), the 118i Convertible accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.3 seconds. delivers a whole range of benets, including enhanced comfort when parking and greater agility on twisty roads. It also boosts safety on motorways by improving directional stability. If the car starts to skid under braking on variable road surfaces, for example, Active Steering automatically cancels out this movement through carefully calculated counter-steering. This allows the driver to brake more forcefully, and the BMW 1 Series Convertible remains safely on track. The virtually 50:50 weight distribution between the axles makes a contribution here by delivering neutral steering behaviour, impressive directional stability and outstanding traction all in all, a rewardingly intense driving experience.
Rear-wheel drive: this setup, typical of BMW, ensures extremely agile handling. Among stand-out properties are a small turning circle, strong directional stability, dynamic cornering ability and unbeatable traction in all situations.
50:50 weight distribution: the principle of dividing weight pretty much evenly between the front and rear of the car is key to achieving the coveted neutral steering behaviour in a BMW. The top-class chassis and standard-fitted DSC combine with this to deliver maximum manoeuvrability and authority in any driving situation.
Steering: negative drive factors on the front axle are conspicuous by their absence in the BMW 1 Series Convertible thanks to the strict separation of drive and steering. As a result, the driver enjoys inimitably direct road feedback through corners. Plus, the steering is tuned to be particularly steady when centred for superb straight-line stability.
Aluminium front suspension: a lightweight, double-joint spring strut front axle for maximum strength and minimum weight. With hydro-mounts for superior vibration and noise comfort. The overall result: unique dynamics and incomparable steering characteristics.

Modern safety technology is highly complex, but its effect is very simple: to give you complete reassurance in every driving situation. To this end, the BMW 1 Series Convertible is tted with Dynamic Stability Control (DSC). DSC optimises stability when moving off and accelerating and delivers maximum traction. Highly responsive sensors monitoring wheel speed, lateral acceleration and yaw rate allow unstable driving conditions, such as understeer and oversteer, to be detected instantly. They are nipped in the bud through interventions in the engine and/or brake management. In the 125i and 135i, DSC comes with additional features. The Brake Stand-by function reduces the stopping distance in emergency braking, while Brake Drying improves braking performance on wet roads. The Hill-Start Assistant allows comfortable hill starts without having to use the parking brake. Fading Compensation, meanwhile, maintains sound braking performance even when the brakes are very hot. DSC also responds to the urge for a pointedly sporty driving style with its traction control (DTC) mode. DTC allows increased slip at the driven wheels until the car reaches its critical limits. The optionally available Adaptive Headlights with variable light distribution and turning lights offer additional safety through corners. This technology sees the cars headlights follow the line of the steering and thus signicantly improve illumination of the road through corners. Adaptive Headlights are tted in conjunction with the optional Xenon Headlights. Daytime driving lights are also integrated into this package in the form of the characteristic BMW light rings. And to send an even faster and more effective warning to vehicles following behind, the BMW 1 Series Convertible is tted as standard with Dynamic Braking Lights. A larger illuminated surface indicates emergency braking.

USB/audio interface with extended functions. With the USB/audio interface and an original iPod USB cable, the album cover for the track being played can be shown on the Control Display in the car (the cover art display function is also available for other devices). The USB/audio interface also allows the software in your BMW to be easily updated, so new mobile phones and music players become operational after updating with a USB stick.1

Bluetooth interface with added functionality (Ofce). With the optional mobile phone preparation with Bluetooth interface in conjunction with a navigation system and the integration of selected business mobile phones1, functions such as email, contacts and SMS messages can be shown on the Control Display or read out through the speakers. For on-board entertainment, there is Bluetooth Audio Streaming2 for wireless playback of music via selected Bluetooth devices1.

Comfort access. This system allows you to open, close and start your car without having to operate the remote control. Touching the handle of the drivers or front passengers door or the tailgate handle establishes a radio link between the vehicle and the remote control to check for the correct identity. If veried, the central locking releases the locks and the door or tailgate opens. If the remote control is recognised by one of the antennas inside the cabin, the engine can also be started without a key, simply by pressing the START/STOP button. High-beam assistant. No unintentional dazzle the optional High-beam assistant recognises light sources in the cars environment and switches the high beam on and off, according to the trafc situation. When the system is active, an image sensor at the back of the interior mirror monitors the trafc and lighting conditions. Based on these sensor images, the assistant decides whether or not the high beam should be switched on. When it detects vehicles ahead, or nds that ambient light is sufcient, the high beam is switched off again.

s Airbags: in a BMW, all safety features complement each other perfectly. There are four airbags to provide specific protection: driver and front passenger airbags and headthorax airbags integrated in the front seat backrests.
s BMW safety restraint system for driver and front passenger. A combination of threepoint seatbelt, pyrotechnic belt tensioner and belt force limiter provides the best possible restraint in the event of a collision.
s Bumpers survive impacts up to 4 km/h without damage. Special crumple elements at the front and rear absorb forces up to 15 km/h.
o Runflat tyres: reinforced side walls prevent the tyres from completely collapsing or loosening from the rim if the air pressure drops (standard from 17" light-alloy wheels)*. s Runflat indicator minimises the risks associated with tyre defects. The system detects air pressure changes in the tyres and then warns the driver by activating a light.
s Rollover safety system ensures the highest possible degree of occupant protection in the event of an accident. If the cars tilt angle, longitudinal or lateral acceleration exceed defined limits or the car loses contact with the road surface, the sensor-controlled rollover bars, integrated behind the rear headrests, extend in fractions of a second.
