Installing the BRAX Amplifiers
In order to maintain the quality of this product and ensure safe operation, we recommend that our amplifiers be installed by an authorized BRAX dealer. Installation by a qualified and accredited technician will qualify you for our special lifetime warranty. Your BRAX dealer will also assist you in selecting the correct additional components and in ensuring that proper consideration is given to all the safety and sound-related aspects. Important: Before commencing installation, disconnect the car battery at the negative terminal. Once again we would urge you to have the installation work carried out by a specialist, as verification of correct installation and connection of the unit is a prerequisite for warranty cover of the BRAX by AUDIOTEC FISCHER Germany.
1. Install your amplifier at a dry location in the car where there is sufficient air circulation to ensure adequate cooling of the equipment. Also ensure that there is sufficient clearance available for making the cable connections and operating the controls. 2. For safety reasons, the amplifier must be secured in a professional manner. This is performed by means of four fixing screws (see Fig. 2) screwed into a mounting surface offering sufficient retention and stability. Before drilling the holes for the screws, carefully examine the area around the installation position and make sure that there are no electrical cables or components, hydraulic brake lines or any part of the petrol tank located behind the mounting surface - otherwise these could be damaged. You should be aware of the fact that such components may also be concealed in the double-skin trim panels/moldings.

The above amplifier models may only be installed in motor vehicles which have a 12-volt negative terminal connected to the chassis ground. Any other system could cause damage to the amplifier and the electrical system of the vehicle.
In order to avoid cross-talk distortion, audio cables should never be laid together with electrical leads (with the exception of the screened BRAX POWER TRAX power supply cables). In order to ensure safe installation, use only high-quality
The positive lead from the battery for the complete system should be provided with a line fuse at a distance of max. 30 cm from the battery. The amperage rating of the fuse is calculated from the maximum total current input of the car/vehicle hifi system. Never bridge fuses or replace them with fuses with a higher amperage rating as such actions could lead to the destruction both of the amplifier and the entire electrical system of the vehicle. As already mentioned, the negative lead from the vehicle battery to the chassis should be disconnected in order to prevent the occurence of short-circuiting. Install the cabling in a manner which precludes any danger of the leads being exposed to shear, crushing or rupture forces. If there are sharp edges in the vicinity (e.g holes in the body work), all the cables must be cushioned and protected to prevent fraying. Never lay the power supply cables adjacent to leads and lines connecting other vehicle equipment (fan motors, fire detection modules, gas/petrol lines etc.).
connection materials, and comply with the recommended minimum cross sections/gauge values of the cables for the individual amplifier modules. As an aid to calculating the cross-sectional requirements of power cables which are not longer than 5 m, we advise a figure of max. 5 A per mm2. For the X 1400 BRAX amplifiers described, we recommend a minimum cross section of 12 mm2 /gauge 7, and for the X 2400 a minimum cross section of 20 mm2 /gauge 5 for the positive 12-volt supply lead and for the ground (chassis) cable. In order to ensure optimum sound quality and interference-free music reproduction, we recommend that installation be performed with BRAX POWER TRAX power supply cables. The remote lead should have a cross section of at least 1 mm2.
Connection of the Power Supply
The +12 volt power supply cable (see Fig. 2) should be connected directly to the positive terminal of the battery. A fuse should also be provided at a distance of max. 30 cm from the battery. The amperage rating of the fuse is calculated from the maximum total current input of the car/vehicle hifi system. The fuse holder appertaining to the amplifier is supplied with the amplifier module. This must be installed at a distance of max. 20 cm from the positive terminal of the amplifier and equipped with the original BRAX fuse provided. The fuse ratings are: for amplifier X 1400 = 60 A, for amplifier X 2400 = 100 A. Failure to comply nullifies the warranty. The ground (chassis) cable (see Fig. 2) should be connected to the central ground reference point (this is located where the negative terminal of the battery is grounded at the metal chassis of the vehicle), or to a bright bare-metal location on the vehicle chassis, i.e. an area which has been cleaned of all paint residues. It must be ensured that resistance values to the power sources (alternator, generator, battery) are minimized as excessive resistance can appreciably affect the audio quality and dynamics of the system. The Remote cable (see Fig. 2) is connected to the Remote connection or the automatic antenna connection of the control unit (tuner/radio). The antenna connection is only activated if the control unit is switched ON. This ensures that, with the control unit switched off, the amplifier is also switched off to safe the battery.

The BRAX amplifiers have RCA connectors for cinch cables which are connected to the pre-amplifier outputs or line outputs of the control unit (tuner/radio). Ask your dealer for the appropriate BRAX accessories.

Connection of the Speaker Cables
Important! Never connect the speaker cables to the vehicle chassis. This can destroy your amplifier. Ensure that all the speaker systems are connected in-phase, i.e. plus to plus and minus to minus. The positive terminal is indicated on most speakers. In addition, the amplifiers may be operated in 2-channel mode (see Fig. 5), 3-channel mode (see Fig. 6) and 4-channel mode (see Fig. 7). The mono/stereo selector switch is located at the bottom of the amplifier. The function of the switch is described on a label at the bottom of the amplifier (see Fig. 4).

Circuit Control Cards
The operating range of the amplifier is determined by replaceable Circuit Control Cards (CCC). If no special requirements regarding the CCCs are specified when ordering, the amplifier is supplied as standard with CCC 1. CCC 1 is plugged in at socket position 3 which means that the amlifier is operating in the full range (see list on page 8). If CCC 1 is inserted at socket position 1 or 2, as described in Fig. 8 to 12, the amplifier operates with a subsonic filter having a rate of change of 18 dB/Oct. from 45 Hz. The various Circuit Control Cards available are indicated in the list on page 8.
Example: If you wish to use the module as a subwoofer amplifier, with the subwoofer being operated at 90 Hz, you find the corresponding Circuit Control Card from the list (in this case CCC 5) and insert the card in your BRAX amplifier at position 2 of that channel which is to control the subwoofer - the right channel in the case of the mono mode (bridge mode). Now the amplifier will only process frequencies up to 90 Hz, with any frequencies above that value being suppressed at the rate of change of 18 dB/Oct. At position 1 the amplifier will only process frequencies higher than 90 Hz.
Handling the Circuit Control Cards

Choose the position number from the CCC list which corresponds to the required function of the amplifier, and insert the card in the base so that the position number on the card is located at the top at the housing cover next to the arrows according to the channels (see Figs. 11 and 12). 2. Check the speaker wires and the speakers themselves for short-circuiting, and rectify as necessary. Replace the defective speaker with a new one. Check the connections (screen/shield). Replace the cable with screened BRAX POWER TRAX cable. Consult your dealer. Select an optimum central ground point to serve the entire power supply system of your vehicle, including the control unit (radio/tuner).
Please consult your dealer in relation to all other installation problems. Once again we would urge you to have your dealer perform the installation work. He will be able to guarantee to you that this high-quality amplifier has been correctly installed. Moreover, verification of correct installation by specialist is a prerequisite for the lifetime warranty of your amplifier.
Equipment Features and Control Elements
1 Signal Inputs Right Channel Both inputs -front and rear- are marked red. Connect using an RCA cable with cinch connectors. 2 Signal Inputs Left Channel Both inputs -front and rear- are marked white. Connect using an RCA cable with cinch connectors. 3 Speaker Terminals The speakers are connected here in accordance with the required configuration (see Figs. 5 to 7). Cable sizes of up to 6 mm2 /gauge 10 can be employed for this purpose. 4 CPS-Color Protection System This shows the operating status of your amplifiers. When the amplifier module is switched on, all LEDs briefly light up red and then change to green. This means that all channels of the module are operational. In the event of a malfunction in the amplifier module or a short circuit at the output, the LED for the defective or short-circuited channel switches to yellow. In the event of an amplifier channel overheating, the associated LED switches to red. Green = operational; Yellow = malfunction in the amplifier, short circuit at the speaker output; Red = overheating. If the amplifier has tripped owing to overheating, it may take some time, depending on the ambient temperature, before it is re-activated. 5 Input Sensitivity Level Controllers To operate the sensitivity level controllers loosen the screws and remove the gold-plated leaf with logo and series number. Use the enclosed set-screw for this action. The level controllers enable the input sensitivity of the BRAX amplifiers to be adapted to the output voltage of the connected control unit (radio/tuner). These controllers are not volume controls. Optimum setting of the level controller ensures you maximum audio enjoyment without those all-too-common audible distortions and overshoot phenomena which have such an adverse effect on sound quality.

Surprisingly, the new BRAX Matrix X4 amplifier is quadratic. This exclusive test review of the worlds very first exemplar explains which further sensations it has to offer.
If a product which was technically perfect and very well designed suddenly looks different, some people might feel puzzled: Hadnt it been perfect before? However, at some point the time has come for a new vision, for a new design. This is exactly the case with the legendary BRAX amplifiers that have been rectangular for 13 years: Now, as the worlds first exemplar of the 4-channel version Matrix X4 proves, the new BRAX amplifiers are quadratic. And this has a very good reason because the quadratic amplifiers can be installed much easier because the connectors can always be turned to the direction where you need them. After finding the perfect place for the installation, you can unscrew the quadratic nameplate, adjust it to the right position and reaffix it. With an edge length of 33cm the new Matrix X4 presents itself as a massive powerhouse which has a little bit grown in height. As a result of this new overall height the heatsink available in black, silver, stainless steel and chrome has now an additional cooling fin. Serial Number 0000 The BRAX nameplate on our test exemplar reveals something which makes this review very special: This amplifier is the very first functioning Matrix X4 on this planet! The test pattern was manufactured even before the actual manufacturing started and therefore it has the serial number 0000. It is obvious that this a handcrafted amplifier because the first regular X4 whose circuit board will be assembled by a placement machine within the next few days will carry the serial number 0001. Thus, our test amplifier is not only Made in Germany but also Handmade to the core. A look into the interior of this dream amplifier immediately raises the already existing respect for the Audiotec Fischer Team, which has soldered each and any of hundreds of SMD-parts to the prototype board by hand. Equipment? Non-existent! Many of the relevant improvements can be found as soon as you have a detailed look on the board. First of all, it is obvious that there are no parts for crossovers or
sound controls in the input selection a logical consequence from the fact that in these days almost every premium sound system is operated by an external digital signal processor (DSP) which takes care of all filter functions. Due to this puristic design and the saved parts in the signal path, there is an audible sound improvement. And this is an advantage that every high-end enthusiast prefers to an analog crossover. The new Burr-Brown-parts in the discretely designed signal path add all that remains for creating perfect sound. Two separate power supplies The power supplies and their controllers form the most important improvement of the magic squares. The Matrix-amplifier works with two completely separated power supply sections which tasks are again split into three subsections. Part one exclusively takes care of the driver voltage, part two is responsible for the actual power amplifier and part three solely supplies the operational amplifiers. A specialty of the Matrix X4 is the impedance-independent power output which is based on a newly developed control mode for the power supply. Power and voltage are permanently monitored by so called Shunts in order to detect the performance that challenges the amplifier on its output. Shunts are bypass resistors which work as follows: the bigger the voltage drop the more power is transfluent. These measurements are analysed digitally, the voltage of the power supplies is adjusted respectively. Thus, the amplifier works with constant impedance and also the other data, such as damping factor etc., is very stable. Furthermore, on the surface there are two so called Dip-switches which allow the user of the amplifier to select the impedance for each channel-pair between 4 Ohms, 2 Ohms and 1 Ohm. If you forget to make the right choice, the electronics of the amplifier will take corrective action. With this circuit-trick Audiotec Fischer wants to live up to highest sound expectations. Loudspeaker setups with low impedance might make sense for volume-oriented sound systems. However, high-end enthusiasts generally do not like them. These experts always coin the motto: It is not the power that sounds. Its the voltage that is responsible for good sound rendition! The buffering of the Matrix X4 is based on a combination of storage throttles and capacitors. This composition has the advantage that the throttle can store lots of energy whereas the capacitors works very quickly and agile. Thus, anytime and without any delay there is enough power available. By only using capacitors this would not be possible. The amplifier section of the new quadratic BRAX has been outsourced completely; in an upright position it is located on two separate boards lateral to the heatsink. Here you can find 16 capacitors per side, 8 per channel thus, 32 in total. Puristic High-End The connectors and operating units that rest on the body of the Matrix X4 underline the puristic high-end approach of this new super-amplifier. On one side of the amp there are only the obligatory connectors for the power cable, the remote input and a parallel connector for an external power capacitor. On the opposite side you can see the perfectly manufactured loudspeaker connectors and the Dip-switches for
impedance-selection which where already mentioned above. These switches also serve as input selectors with which you can chose between the classic stereo input, a bridged stereo input and the mono mode. The BRAX receives its input signal either by two single-screwed cinch-connectors or by two balanced signal inputs. For level control four potentiometers form a guard of honour so that each channel can be adjusted exactly. In our measuring laboratory the X4 had to prove that it can compete with its strong predecessor BRAX X2400.2 Graphic Edition concerning power. The latter one had once set high-end standards with proud 148 Watts at 4 Ohms and 4 x 266 Watts at 2 Ohms. New record concerning power output One thing has to be said first: The Matrix X4 can not only compete with the Graphic Edition, it outshines its predecessor massively. With 4 x 292 Watts at 4 Ohms it doubles the power output of the X2400.2 Graphic Edition easily. Thus, it is the most powerful 4-channel amplifier in the world! Due to the impedance-independent power supply, at 2 and 1 Ohm the measurement data did hardly change at all (4 x 270 at 2 Ohm, 4 x 284 at 1 Ohm).Alone, the measurement at 4 Ohms bestowed rich 21 power points on the X4 a result that other amplifiers only reach in a bridged and a low impedance mode and that mostly would lead to very poor sound results. The power consumption (136 A at 4 Ohms) is in view of the terrific power absolutely bearable. The damping which was measured with 1034 at 10 kHz and 600 for the bass rendition is excellent. Measuring TIM and THD, one could find that this was a hand-soldered exemplar of the Matrix X4. The tiny SMD-parts might suffer easily from the high or the unbalanced temperature that works on them during this process. Thus, divergent measurement data can be explained without any efforts. However, AUTOHIFI has ordered one of the exemplars where the boards will be soldered by a placement machine. Of course, we will carry out another measurement and we will issue the exact data in one of our next editions. Enormously detailed sound The atmosphere in our listening-room right before the final test was very excited. You could even call it an overwhelming tension. What would such an amplifier do to our reference loudspeakers? However, after the very first listening impressions we were sure: This is a real BRAX! It sounds simply ingeniously and phenomenal, unbelievably rich in sound. Listening to Nils Lofgrens exceptionally gifted guitar playing in the live recording of Keith dont go, you can hear and feel each touch of the guitar body, each of Keiths guitar grips, yes, even each of his breaths that make this recording such an authentic experience.
