| This is the highly rated HD Minidv camcorder on the market right now. It uses regular minidv tape to store your video. Actually. | |

| For a look at a sample video I made go to vimeo dot com/1365632 and play my indoor video to see how well it does. Buy the 4 to 6 pin IEEE 1394 cable at Newegg for just a few dollars if you buy this camera. | |

| Great High Def consumer camera, only flaw is that the field of view is very tight indoors. An aftermarket lens solved that though. "Great Sound". | |

Basic Workflow recommendations for Canon HV30 Cameras The HV-30 has several shooting modes: HDV 16:9 HD interlaced video look HDV 24PF 16:9 HD film look HDV 30PF 16:9 HD interlaced video look DV Wide 16:9 SD Anamorphic DV video DV 4:3 SD DV video All of them write to tape at 29.97 fps. Try them out to see what works for your aesthetic. NOTE: It is not recommended to mix recording modes on a single tape With this basic path you will ingest HDV natively using FCP and fire-wire, and leave the codec as originally captured until output. This basic path will allow you to edit HDV and down convert to SD DV for general viewing, export a QuickTime file to make a native widescreen DVD and allows for an up convert after editing to Pro-Res 422 if needed. This path is not recommended for compositing of any kind, or pull-up to 24 fps (23.98). Basic Path: Hook the camera up to a computer (Mac) via firewire using Final Cut Pro version 6.x.x Set easy setup as follows:
In the log and capture window click on the clip settings tab, and uncheck Create new clip on Start/Stop.
Log and capture as usual, being careful to avoid time-code breaks. After any break allow a minimum 5 seconds of pre-roll before setting the next in-point. Edit your project as you normally would. Use Media Manager within FCP to convert your final edit as follows: Highlight your final sequence only and then select Media Manager from the file menu. For SD DV, set as shown below:
Send your new SD DV project and media to the appropriate drive location. (not the server) The new project will be ready for output in SD DV codec and can output to DV tape or allow you to save a DV codec QuickTime file for making a DVD with iDVD. To make a native widescreen HDV DVD with iDVD to display on widescreen devices (monitors, projectors, etc.) export a QuickTime move from the original HDV project sequence using current settings. (see How to create a QuickTime Movie with FCP 6 for iDVD at calarts available as a PDF file from HFPADL. The PDFs are stored in the "hfpadl" account. Please "Connect to Server", type "tiktok" and find "hfpadl". The PDFs are in the "Public" folder. When higher HD resolution is desired you will need to learn the advanced paths, or upconvert with media manager to the Pro-Res 422 codec for output off-campus. See Lisa, Gordon or Astra for additional technical information and/or assistance.
