United Kingdom / Republic of Ireland, 05 January, 2009: Canon today announces a new generation of High Definition flash memory camcorders: the professional standard LEGRIA HF S series. Combining several unique and highly advanced imaging technologies, the LEGRIA HF S10 and LEGRIA HF S100 represent a true breakthrough for HD recording enabling videographers to take their moviemaking to new heights. The award-winning Canon HD Camcorder System has been updated and redesigned specifically for the LEGRIA HF S series. Combining an 8.0 Megapixel Full HD CMOS sensor, a genuine Canon HD Video Lens with a 10x optical zoom, and the new DIGIC DV III processor, image capture size is almost three times greater than Full HD resolution providing the ultimate in image quality. With an extensive set of professional-level controls and features, the LEGRIA HF S10 and LEGRIA HF S100 are equally suited to high-end consumers or professional movie sets. Superior image quality The advances made with the LEGRIA HF S10 and LEGRIA HF S100 are only possible thanks to a combination of unique Canon HD technologies. With an 8.0 Megapixel CMOS sensor 6.0 Megapixels effective for video captured images are actually larger than 1920x1080 Full HD, ensuring that every last detail is retained. Video is then converted to Full HD resolution and recorded at the maximum data rate permitted under the AVCHD standard 24Mbps for pinsharp images and smooth motion.
To maximise low-light performance, LEGRIA HF S series camcorders are constructed around a large HD Video Lens (58mm filter diameter) with a 10x optical zoom. If more zoom is required, the 1.7x digital tele-converter function boosts the range to 17x while still retaining Full HD quality. Canons Super Range Optical Image Stabilizer combines two kinds of shake detection systems, to better eliminate vibrations across the frequency range from slow breathing patterns to the rapid vibrations of a car journey. With these advantages, the LEGRIA HF S10 and LEGRIA HF S100 capture approximately 12.5% more image resolution than the award-winning Canon HF11. The new DIGIC DV III image processor has been designed to handle the large amounts of image data received from the 8.0 Megapixel sensor. With improved colour gradation, it supports the expanded gamut of the xvYCC Colour Space (x.v.Color). DIGIC DV III also boasts superior AE (Auto Exposure) performance including a 25% increase in dynamic range, providing natural hues in high contrast shooting conditions and supports the introduction of Face Detection Technology. Face Detection Canon Face Detection Technology can detect up to 35 faces in a single frame, optimising shooting settings accordingly. Up to nine faces can be highlighted: the user can select one as the main reference point. Sophisticated Face Select and Track technology similar to that found in Canon compact digital cameras ensures that this remains the focus for as long as possible. Face Detection AE (Auto Exposure) harnesses the power of DIGIC DV III to quickly achieve correct exposure. Face Detection AF (Auto Focus) employs Canons Instant AF system which offers both speed and accuracy to track faces and ensure that they are correctly focused. Canons Face Detection system is unique, responding exceptionally quickly and smoothly even when faces are framed against backgrounds that are significantly darker or lighter than the subject. With Face Jump and Face Timeline modes, searching through footage in playback is quick and easy. Professional level control Shooting on LEGRIA HF S series camcorders, videographers have a wide range of professional level tools at their disposal, helping them achieve the look and feel they want. With direct access to manual shooting controls, via the customisable Control Dial and Custom Key, they can quickly respond to dynamically changing shooting conditions. Colour Peaking exaggerates the edges of objects displayed on the LCD screen, aiding manual focusing. Zebra Assist makes it easier to judge when areas of a

picture are over-exposed. The LCD screen can also be set to 100% underscan to show exactly what will be displayed on a TV screen. AGC level limits, usually only found on high-end camcorders, allow users to boost the camcorders responsiveness when shooting in low light conditions. Technology to trust in With a sculpted circular design that feels comfortable to hold, controls are intuitively placed under the hand. A new user interface makes for more effective operation of the camcorder through the menu system. During professional level shoots, Colour Bar and Test Tone functions allow external monitors and audio equipment to be accurately calibrated to the camcorders output. When engaged, the new Pre REC feature continuously records a three second buffer while the camcorder is switched on. From the moment the user presses the record button, the preceding three seconds are automatically added to the beginning of the clip. This is an effective guarantee against missing the shot, should the action happen faster than expected. Canon Dual Shot simplifies the sometimes confusing array of shooting modes available on traditional function dials. Alongside dedicated Video and Still shooting modes, which allow access to manual shooting controls, lies a third option Dual Shot. Dual Shot sets all of the camcorders controls to automatic, allowing the user to concentrate on the subject they are shooting. Dual Shot also allows video and still images to be taken in quick succession, without the need to change shooting mode stills can be taken at any point, even during video recording. Along with the ability to capture high resolution 8.0 Megapixel still images, new Photo Burst allows users to make 25 still images each captured at 2.07 Megapixel resolution from a single second of movie footage. Playback has also been simplified and can be accessed at any time with one press of a dedicated button. The advantages of flash memory The LEGRIA HF S10 and LEGRIA HF S100 introduce users to all the benefits of flash memory. Flash requires less power than traditional recording media and offers faster start up times. Physically smaller, flash also allows for more compact, lighter camcorder designs. And since flash memory involves no moving parts, footage stays safe, protected against the bumps and knocks a camcorder is often subjected to. The range offers two options: the Dual Flash Memory LEGRIA HF S10 shoots to 32GB of internal flash memory enough for over 12 hours of HD video recording at the most efficient quality setting, or up to 3 hours at the highest quality 24Mbps
