The Universal Wizard

The Blu-ray disc has found its way to the high-end of society, to a class in which virtues like ultimate sound performance and Oscar-worthy picture quality are the standards by which all things are measured. With the premiere of the worlds first high-end universal Blu-ray player, DVD-A1UD (recommended retail price 4,999 euro), DENON has added a stereo and multi-channel signal source, dignified in every respect, to its award-winning reference class pre-amplifier/power amplifier combination AVP-A1HDA and POA-A1HD as well as the AV surround amplifier AVC-A1HDA. Exclusive technical innovations and flawless workmanship from this universal talent confirm claims of optimal performance on all established disc formats.
If still more evidence were necessary to prove that the Blu-ray Disc (BD) has what it takes to successfully follow in the footsteps of DVD, than the release of the most recent James Bond film Quantum of Solace is it. When it was released on disc, 64,000 Blu-ray discs were sold in the first weekend alone. This makes it the best Blu-ray launch of all time to date. That was at the end of March. In the meantime the enjoyable adventure of four animals that escaped from the New York zoo in the animated film Madagascar 2 and the dramatic love story Australia amongst others are offering fierce competition for the world-famous British secret agent 007 together with his Bond girls. In the past year alone, film and music fans from all over Europe have expanded their collections to include nine million Blu-ray Discs. Since riding out the initial format confusion, the new super disc has really taken off. Even potential future alternatives like flash memory, hard discs or the online download offers will not be able to prevent Blu-ray from establishing itself as the universal, all-purpose, highdefinition medium and from holding a firm place on the shelf and in the hearts of the audiovisual man (and woman). It holds true more than ever when great importance is attached to the ultimate performance and uncompromising entertainment experience in the home.
DENON DVD-A1UD The Universal Wizard
The number of Blu-ray titles continue to grow month after month thanks to new releases of current blockbusters and the growing number of live concert recordings like, for example, the The Police reunion tour. Yet until now the total audiophile potential of the new format has remained largely unheard in the circles of the most discerning highend enthusiasts. DENON would like to change that. The renowned producer of premium home-cinema amplifiers and outstanding universal DVD players of the calibre of the DVD-A1XV or the now legendary high-flyer in price and performance, the DVD-3930, has put the latest source format in place with the DVD-A1UD.
Unlike a pure Blu-ray player, the new DENON reference player is fully devoted to all other disc formats that hold a place in enthusiasts collections: the DVD-A1UD reads amongst others, the exclusive, high-resolution audio standard Super Audio CD (SACD) and DVD-Audio. Indeed even those widespread, yet still as popular as ever, CDs and DVDs can be played back on the DVD-A1UD at a level of the best specialist players for CD or DVD respectively. If you want to carry the notion of one for all to the extreme, you need lots of experience developing universal players that produce the ultimate playback quality. DENON has got this experience plus the courage to innovate where few others would dare. For example, the DVD-A1UD has two CEC-compatible HDMI-outputs (version 1.3a including Deep Colour & HD-Audio-Bitstream) at its disposal. The progressive interfaces enable, as is generally known, the digital transmission of high-resolution pictures and the newest multi-channel audio formats like DTS-HD (Master & High Resolution Audio) or Dolby TrueHD over a single connection. Furthermore, the HDMI double pack enables the parallel operation of a video projector and a plasma or LCD screen. Real high-end purists, however, prefer an alternative that the DVD-A1UD has to other BD players. They use one of the two HDMI-connections exclusively for picture transmission, and where appropriate for directly connecting to a video projector. The second HDMI output is connected to the A/V amplifier, however remains reserved exclusively for audio transmission.
A further testimony to DENONs craftsmanship is the symmetrical wiring layout along with the analogue 2-channel audio signal path that consistently flows into a balanced output (XLR). The premium connection enables, for example, in combination with the pre-/power amplifier AVP-A1HDA/POA-A1HD the combination of a fully symmetrical hifi/home cinema, offering the best prerequisites for premium stereo pleasure. Unlike conventional cinch-connections, balanced XLR transmits the stereo signal twice: once normally and once with reverse polarity (180 degree-displacement of phase). Advantage: by comparing both signal paths, the bulk of disturbing interference and noise can be recognized more easily and eliminated effectively. This high resilience to interference explains why XLR connections are the first choice for professionals in the sound studio for an absolutely true to original analogue transmission. As can be expected from a high-end universal player delivering ultimate performance, the DVD-A1UD supports all audio layers of Super Audio CD discs, with no limitations including the high-definition stereo and multi-channel data streaming. Blu-ray also offers the ability to capture all the detail in music, which in the age of high definition can be expected from a high-resolution Audio Only Disc. The aim of DENONs exclusive D.D.S.C. (Dynamic Discrete Surround Circuit)HD technology is to bring out the delicate nuances on the discs. This is accomplished in many ways: the 6-ply digital board is fully equipped with premium discrete components. Super high-resolution D/A converters (32-bit, 192 kHz) for all channels are counted amongst the finest elements. The shortest signal paths and DENONs own further technology known as Advanced AL32 processing multi-channel also account for the exceptional audio performance. The latest AL processing variations are put to work for the first time in the DVD-A1UD.

The option to consistently separate HDMI video and HDMI audio promises, in addition to brilliant contrast and an impressive picture, ultimate sound quality. The explanation? The experts state that the improved tonal characteristics is attributed to the available bandwidth.
The engineers did not want to settle for these HDMI special features on their own. The first-time application of the DENON Link 4th edition (DL) technology improves the quality of the HDMI data transfer yet again. As soon as an additional DL connection exists between the DVD-A1UD and an appropriately equipped A/V amplifier, the master clock assumes control of the digital data streams central timing. The exact synchronization of both components enables optimal HDMI transmission that does not give interference from unwanted jitter a chance and can therefore lead to an even more vivid and spatial tone. The youngest DENON innovation is also available for the DVD-A1UDs amplifier dream partner. Owners of the reference production model AVP-A1HDA or AVC-A1HDA already have the possibility to obtain DENON Link 4th with a software update for themselves. For the buyers of the A model (with Audyssey Dynamic Volume Upgrade) this service will be free of charge. The remaining A1 customers can keep up with home cinema technology with the combi-upgrade consisting of Audyssey Dynamic Volume and DENON Link 4th for 100 euro. This example once again shows that DENON develops high-end products of lasting value with a guaranteed future.
The ALPHA processor generates refined music signals from conventional multi-channel signals with 16-bit or 24-bit, reaching a resolution of the as yet unmatched 32-bit level. Thus the DENON universal player achieves a nearly perfect correlation between the output signal and the original. The possibility to decode all prevalent audio formats including Neo: 6, Dolby ProLogic IIx or even the audiophile HDCD-disc are all part of its abilities. The new Blu-ray audio formats like DTS-HD Master Audio and DolbyTrueHD are supported by the DVD-A1UD as well (full HD audio decoding). Those sound purist who argue that less is more in hardware questions, likewise will get their moneys worth. With the option to deactivate unneeded sections resulting in shortened signal paths by implementing AV Pure Direct. In light of the passionate dedication to all lossless audio formats on Blu-ray disc, CD, SACD or DVD-Audio, the impression could be given that the equal treatment of comparatively common compressed audio codecs like MP3, Dolby Digital or DTS would be less important in the DVD-A1UD. The opposite is actually true: the compressed audio restorers used to enhance multi-channel audio, for the first time, also help the DVDs compressed multi-channel variations to reach new sound levels and with that bring new life to DD5.1- or DTS-coded surround sound. The efficient, soundenhancing retrieval of the least significant bits believed to be lost enables more extensive analysis and processing to be performed. At the same time, the smallest details from the original are preserved. From these remainders, which are practically indiscernible in the playback, the Compressed Audio Restorer can even recover additional music information off the original in the bass and the treble domain. Since this exclusive DENON sound-restoration technology operates directly on the audio signal, the playback improvements achieved are in no way to be compared with the effectiveness of the traditional bass and treble controls. Indeed even the highest-performing processors, the most discreet components and the most precise algorithms only lead to the desired perfect playback quality of all optical disc varieties in an environment designed strictly according to basic audiophile principles. The fact that DENON has spared no cost in developing the DVD-A1UD, is evident in the 19.8 kg weight alone. The credit for that goes in part to the ultra stabile base plate consisting of three massive steel layers. The lowered centre of gravity and vibration-resistant design with super stabile sandwich construction guarantees that the DVD-A1UD is thoroughly protected from all imaginable external mechanical and electro-magnetic disturbances. Naturally the high quality construction also stands rock solid on cushioned feet. Underneath the robust metal casing, in addition to the finest grade electronic components, an array of inconspicuous measures show the love of detail that the engineers have incorporated in their new reference player. Just one example: the power supply transformer, which is considered to be a hindrance in every player, is positioned simply on the point of highest mechanical stability, that is, directly above a foot of the player and therefore immobilized. It is often these supposed little things that lead to a great sound experience. The traditional well thought out DENON 7-block-design is something else. The strict break down into individual wiring sections has already proven itself in the preceding DVD-A1XV model, as the optimal and most efficient means of minimizing unwanted interference and noise. Trust in the security and longevity of this audiophile universal machine is further instilled by the high-quality gently gliding, slender disc mechanism. The plate consists of an aluminium die cast moulding that is additionally stabilised with a copper coating on the underside. The DVD-A1UDs actual showpiece presents itself very secretively. For good reason since the enhanced S.V.H.-drive is tucked in a second, hermetically sealed metal casing made from a zinc die cast moulding. Ultimately the Servo-actuator requires absolute stillness for the sampling of the numerous supported disc formats to the highest precision. This applies notably to the new laser pick-up that enables a contact-free sampling of the Blu-ray discs with short wave, blue violet light.

Attributing the brilliant -down to the last detail- Blu-ray pictures to the S.V.H.-drive alone would be unfair, but also to the exquisite performance of the once more improved video signal workmanship resulting from an integrated 10-bit processor. The highly respected HQV REALTA processor from Silicon Optix commands plenty of computing power in order to accomplish multiple functions competently at once like scaling to the 1920 x 1080 format and also de-interlacing. The high-end chip even masters challenges like dual HDVideo processing with ease. Advantage: the parallel video display over HDMI- and the component output can take place on demand in various HD resolutions. Particular attention should be paid to the comprehensive, motion adaptive digital noise reduction. The technology operates with both standard and high-definition film material and leads to striking image enhancements. Furthermore, the DVD-A1UD delivers films in1080p/24 format with minimal jitter. If that wasnt enough: the universal player also offers a source direct function for an absolutely true to original playback quality. It passes on video data to the connected flat screen or projector untreated, directly in the format saved to the disc. And those who would like to enjoy Blu-ray films in cinemascope aspect ratio (2.35:1) with a video projector complete with optic attachments (anamorphic) without compromise can also literally fully rely on the DVD-A1UD. The v-stretch mode stretches out the pictures, so that even cinemascope films can be captured perfectly with an anamorphic accessory lens. Those more familiar with the brand DENON know that the high-end reference models also leave no desires unmet in their configurations. Despite the impressive wealth of features, a high level of user friendliness is ensured: in the clearly structured, self-illuminated keypad on the new remote control and the attractively designed, intuitive screen menus. The high-resolution graphic user interface (GUI) makes the setup and daily use a pleasant affair even in the current DENON premium class A/V-receivers and amplifiers.
