| clarinet stand A well designed, well engineered product at a good price. Very stable, easy to fold and portable. Good quality but... For a cheap desk top/piano top mic stand, this is great. The quality of construction is very sturdy and solid. | |

BLUE ENCORE 100 AND ENCORE 200 MICROPHONES
Many of you would be aware of Blue microphones and would have no doubt used one or even a few of their models in the past. One thing is for sure, if you havent used one, you will at least instantly recognise one, especially those like the Blue Bottle, Baby Bottle and Bluebird models that have a very distinct design. But, it isnt all about looks with Blue microphones; the real beauty is in their sound. Having created application specic microphones for studio and lifestyle applications, Blue have now released a range of live microphones that again focus on getting the best possible sound into the system. Let me introduce you to the enCORE line of microphones from Blue. Blues enCORE line of four handheld microphones for live applications does what anyone would expect from a manufacturer of incredible studio mics. It absolutely raises the bar for everyone else. Although they do not bare the avant garde looks of some of their studio models, the enCORE line still stands out as a very different looking, extremely well nished and solidly built selection of mics for their intended purposes. But, it isnt all about the looks; after all, these things need to sound good. And they do. enCORE 100 The enCORE 100 is the rst model in the line, but by no means a cut down version of the others. It is a studio grade, handheld, dynamic mic with a cardioid pickup pattern that handles itself very well under extremely high sound pressure levels whilst still offering good, solid side rejection. This mic looks pretty, but in the hand feels tough. It will work very well with the vocalist who is active on stage and tends to bump the mic around a lot as its low handling noise thresholds are brilliant. What is even more impressive is the top end response that you can get from this mic. It isnt sloppy and mufed, like is so often the case when a heavy magnet weighs down the capsule, as is heard in some of the more popular live microphones going around. Instead, there is plenty of headroom and a crisp top end that evenly balances out the lows and mids, making it ideal for vocals when clarity is being sought. enCORE 200 The enCORE 200 is the next model in the line and has the same aesthetic design as the enCORE 100 and the same weight but with a more stylish colour scheme, so the two arent easily confused on poorly lit stages. Again, this model shares the same proprietary dynamic capsule as the enCORE 100, and enjoys the same side rejection and low handling noise. However, when heard side by side, the enCORE 200 really puts its best foot forward. A slightly higher frequency range and tighter sensitivity means that the enCORE 200 leaps out in front of the enCORE 100 in many aspects of the performance. An even more natural air to the sound in the higher frequencies gives a greater beauty to the mids that make this an ideal choice for lead vocals. Nothing is left being, as
JET CITY JCA100H HEADdirt with plenty of tight bottom end and tough mids
enCORE 100 fast transients are awlessly captured in a way that would usually be expected from a condenser microphone and the higher output of the enCORE 200 means more headroom and less chance of nasty feedback. All in all, these are both two very well designed microphones that live up to what they claim. It was never going to be enough for Blue to simply release a handful of live mics to try and ll another sector of the market, no, they needed to produce a line of microphones that stood up with the best as would be expected of something bearing the Blue name. This is exactly what they have done. I would have no complaints with a few of these in my mic kit, and I am sure most of you would agree with me. BLACKSTAR HT-DELAY, HT-REVERB & HT-MODULATION PEDALS
Great tone, great control and a build quality
British guitar amp manufactures Blackstar are well known for their quality guitar amps, placing great attention to detail in all the models in the range. So, it stands to reason that when they release a line of effects pedals, they too will give guitarists serious about tone, something to get excited about. With that, Blackstar have just released three valve driven effects pedals to complement their existing range of overdrive and distortion pedals. Ready for business The rst thing you will notice when you get your hands on any of these pedals is the build quality. They are big, they are heavy and they are tough. The preamp valve in the centre of the unit is housed within a rugged metal casing, so you know its there, but it isnt about to get damaged from rough use. All the pots are rm, yet smooth and the silent switches give no resistance for easily changing settings. The HT pedals are not some plastic toy that is going to fall apart on you after one gig. So, lets have a look at the three pedals that make up the HT effects range. HT-Delay The valve delay pedal offers six different types of delay effect as well as two separate loop functions. Time, Feedback and Saturation controls are available with one of the switches acting as either a loop marker or tap feature for setting delay times. The delay emulations are fantastic, with Tape, Multihead, Analogue, Linear and Space options, there is just about a delay tone for any application, topped off with the compression and saturation from the valve. HT-Reverb Eight different types of reverb are on offer with the HTReverb pedal. There are a number of various room sizes to choose from, a very tight and punchy plate reverb, a typically loose spring reverb and for those after something a little bit different, a reverse reverb that adds real character to ambient styles of playing. One of the switches gives the reverb an instant character change with short and long modes available at the tap of a toe and a tone control enables you to get the reverb sitting in the mix snugly without being too abrasive. HT-Modulation The HT-Modulation is a real feature packed unit. The eight different modulation styles include Flanger, two Phasers, three Choruses, Tremolo and Rotary emulation. Often, pedals like this can have a very tight, digital sound to them, but not in the case of the HT-Modulation. Each of the effects has a very natural openness to them which is emphasised with the saturation control over the valve. The second switch gives the user hands-free control over fast or slow modulation settings that make this unit more exible than some.
For a long while boutique amps have often been the unattainable dream for the majority of guitarists. Whilst not intentionally omitting the perhaps less afuent of owners, boutique makers have created amps with price tags that just have been out of reach or not justiable for some. Numerous factors have forced the landscape to change over the last few years with several high-end makers now offering budget or sister lines to complement their higher price tagged big brothers. With streamlined features and components and rened production methods creating lower overheads the end result has been a lower price for the consumer - bonus! With all good things come haters however and many people instantly associate these cheaper amps with lower quality. Well lets see if we can silence the doubters. Coming from the design shed of the famed Mike Soldano (yep, Mr Soldano the man behind the SLO100 and other seriously famed tone machines) we have Jet City Ampliers all tube, featuring simple controls, cool cosmetics, and sensible pricing.doesnt sound too bad to me so far. Suffre Jet City Launched in 2009 Jet City had an almost instant hit on their hands with the release of the JCA20H single channel 20 watt head. This seemed to please the newly invigorated small wattage amp lovers and appease those looking for something grand at slightly lesser volumes. Well the success this baby mustve really put the writing on the wall for the new JC100H two channel 100 watt head. A two channel head the JC100Hs front panel consists of - normal and overdrive levels (as part of the preamp section), bass, middle and treble controls (making up your eq section), master normal and overdrive channel level knobs and a presence dial to top it off. Soldano fans will notice the similarities in layout to the famous SLO100 head (not a bad thing) and indeed Jet City go on to mention The Overdrive channel is the circuit that made Soldano famous. Its been modelled and imitated, but this is the real-efng-high-gaindeal! Sounds like a winner to me. We built this City. Adding to the aforementioned SLO esque control layout Jet City have gone the no frills look for this rst line of amps with minimalist colouring and detailing. The American style logo is simple and effective with a mate even commenting that it
reminded him of a motor oil or racing brand. Solid blue and black tolex and classic black with white dot dials = a simple, rock attitude in my books. Plugging in, the JC100H was pretty quiet on the clean channel, even when cranked with the eq section responding nicely to all sorts of pushing and pulling. Nice headroom makes sure you could push this sucker pretty hard and then drive it further with pedals if so inclined or just balance the masters and level controls. Now we come to what I spose everyone wants to know about.the drive channel. Whilst Ive never played an SLO100, Ive heard quite a few (both in the esh and on recordings) and seen a few clones in my time. Well, the Jet City really seems to recreate that dirt with plenty of tight bottom end and tough mids. Broken, slightly driven tones bark nicely and react to both your guitar volume pot and the channel and master volume controls with the presence dial adding that extra sharp edge if you need. Sold! Alright, just to recap for those that didnt really take it in. Mike Soldanos amps have been a staple in the session/touring world for years. With their amps rmly placed in the hands of pros/studios/collectors alike yet still remaining out of reach for many, the Jet City brand looks likely to bring some of the Soldano prowess to the masses (and without the hefty price tag). As Jet City says We are on a mission to offer some great gear to guitarists at really fair prices. Music to my ears. The multi tap transformer is a winner (allowing easy switching between 100v/120v/220v/240v for international voltages) and with these tones for this price Jet City have placed themselves in a good market for the almost anyone (and not just those that cant afford their bigger brother). Mike Soldano couldnt have put it better when he says Our keep-it-simple approach to tube amp design speaks for itself, these new Jet City amps offer my classic Soldano tones at a killer price Im proud to put my name right on the front. DIGITECH JAMMAN SOLO More than just an on the y looper
Well, this is one unit I know myself and many others have been waiting for. From its beginnings as a rack unit years back to the highly popular dual button pedal unit that has been thrashed by so many people over recent years, we now get a new incarnation of Digitechs love looper in the JamMan Solo. It may be half the size of the previous model, but that doesnt mean that it is half the pedal, not by a long shot. The new JamMan Solo sees a lot of welcome upgrades squeezed into a compact unit that wont overcrowd your probably overowing pedal board. Big things from a little package Needless to say, digital technology is moving in leaps and bounds and what results is we are all the winners. Who would have thought it, but inside the small blue casing of the JamMan Solo is enough memory to store up to 35 minutes of CD quality, mono loops that can be arranged into 99 internal memory patches. More than just an on the y looper, as might be expected, the JamMan Solo gives the user the ability to set up backing tracks or phrases to recall when needed and add to at the click of a button. Independent loop level and rhythm level controls allow you to get the most from the unit with its internal rhythm sounds, or your own recorded patterns. This means that you can ll the memory up with drum patterns, bass lines or anything that comes to mind and basically do away with the need to split your gig fees with any other band member. That aside, it makes the JamMan Solo a very powerful tool for rehearsal use, especially when more complex drum patterns are wanted instead of just a metronome to play along to. Connectivity The JamMan Solo still offers a decent array of connections from such a compact unit. Input and output are available on quarter inch jack with an additional quarter inch jack made available for a footswitch. This then increases the options for hands free recording and playback that a single pedal cannot offer. As well as this, an eighth inch jack auxiliary input is located with the other inputs for connection of other devices such as an MP3 player or drum machine. The real prize winner is found on the other side of the pedal where a USB port is located. This enables the user to connect the JamMan Solo to a PC or Mac and integrate Digitechs JamManager software. The software is an easy to use editor that enables the user to bring loops to and from the computer and arrange them in playlists to be loaded back onto the pedal whenever required. Very handy for solo or duo artists with varying sets who need to
Across the board All three pedals in the range really do complement one another. With left and right outputs supplied on all pedals, it is just a shame that stereo inputs were not also made available. That aside, any or all of the models in the HT effect range would certainly complement most pedal boards giving not only high quality effects, but low operating noise and additional warmth that can often be taken away by similar units. Blackstar have taken their skill and knowledge in creating well built, great sounding ampliers and applied that to this new range of pedals. They may not offer hundreds of different effects (that will mostly go unused), but what they do offer is great tone, great control and a build quality that means they will be in your rig for a long time yet. By Rob Gee Price: RRP $449 Distributor: NAS Phone: 440 Website www.NationalAudio.com.au
be able to redene the nature of their pedal board before a gig. A step forward What I rst thought might have been a real reduction of functionality in a smaller unit has really proven to be quite the opposite. Obviously, there are a number of concessions due completely to the limitations of the pedals size. No XLR input for a microphone, or easy access to the SD card instantly come to mind. But, this is not a pedal that is intended to replace every feature of the previous model. What it does is take the most essential features and bundle them into a very workable package that doesnt take up too much real estate on your pedal board. If you need a looper and need it to be compact, the Digitech JamMan Solo id denitely worth a test run. By Rob Gee Price: RRP $469 Distributor: CMI Phone: (03 ) email sales@cmi.com
