How to retro fit a second USB socket to your Fiat Bravo

Foreword : The Fiat Bravo comes fitted with Fiat's latest on-board multimedia system : Blue & Me. Actually Blue & Me is manufactured by Fiat's subsidiary Magneti Marelli and software powered by Microsoft. The first cars have been shipped with a second USB socket inside the glove compartment. It seems that starting of February 2008 the second USB socket was left off at the factory. Having a second USB socket inside the glove compartment can be useful thus you don't need to hide your drive every time you leave your car. By studying the Blue & Me module it appeared that electronically everything is here to have the USB socket. Why Fiat choosed to no longer mount the USB socket remains a mistery. I paid 0.50 for one socket. Here is how to retro fit a second USB socket for those car which do not have it.
So let's get started. First open your glove box and look at the top you will see two torx screws. Remove them both.
Carefully pull the plastic holder out. The cables might stuck, so be very gentle !
Remove the cables. The big blue one is the easiest one to remove ! Just lift the litlle black lever and your done. The two others are a little harder to remove, be careful to not mess them up !
Now remove the 4 screws holding the Blue & Me
Now you have the Blue & Me in your hands. Put it on a clean dish. From now on using antistatic tools is strongly recommended ! Open the module by removing the 4 screws holding the case together. Notice that there is a SIM Card built on the board !!???!!! If you look at the following picture on the top is the place where the USB connector will go. To avoid shorts, put some insulating tape on the board under the place where the socket will built
Prepare the USB socket by bending the legs like on the following pictures.
Solder the two big outside legs to the big pads, these will be the only thing holding your USB socket to the board be sure to make good job ! Be sure to position your socket so that each of the 4 inside legs are postioned on a soldering place. Now Solder the four inside legs. And guess what ? That's it !
Go back to your car, make sure ignition key is set to off and that radio is switched off. Remove every USB device from the USB connectors. Plug the big blue connector in and run tests with an old USB drive you do not care about (do not use your latest iPod touch !!!). If your USB drive is detected and you can play the MP3 stored on it, you're done !
Using a sharp knife, cut the case so that your new USB socket is reachable from outside. Switch car and radio off, put everything back together. And test every Blue & Me functionality : navigation (if you have Blue & Me Nav), Bluetooth, music.
