Introduction
Congratulations on the purchase of your Harmony remote! This User Manual will introduce you to the basic online setup process, customizations and main features of your Harmony remote. If in doubt about how to set up your Harmony remote, follow the information and instructions using the Logitech Harmony remote software (also referred to as Harmony remote software). The Harmony remote is an Internet-powered universal remote control. Your Harmony remote can control most devices that understand infrared (IR) signals. The configuration of your Harmony remote is simple: You will be prompted to answer questions about your entertainment devices to create your own personal Harmony remote configuration. Your answers will provide us with a description of the entertainment devices you want to control, how they are set up, and your preferences for controlling them. If one of your devices is not in the Harmony remotes database, the Harmony remote software will learn about your device and add it to your configuration. Once you have told us about your devices, you will then be guided through setting up Activities. Creating Activities is simple: you will be prompted to indicate the devices you use within an Activity and how you want to control specific features, such as the volume, within that Activity. An Activity is a set of commands the Harmony remote sends to your entertainment system to turn on the necessary devices. Once you have selected an Activity, you are in Activity mode, and the functionality of each button on your Harmony remote is automatically configured for that Activity. Additionally, the display buttons will give you access to other commands for that Activity, which cannot be set to the standard buttons. Example For the Watch Television Activity, the Harmony remote sends commands to your entertainment system to turn on the necessary devices so you can watch television. The remote will automatically be configured for the Activity based on the answers you selected during the online setup process for the Activity.
At the end of the setup process, you will have your own configuration loaded in your Harmony remote. Use your Harmony remote software to: Customize any of your Harmony remotes features. Add more entertainment devices. Add more Activities.

Using Your Harmony Remote
This section provides you with information that will help you use your remote.
Recharging the Battery
Place your remote in the base station to charge. While the remotes battery is charging: The display and its backlight, and the keypad backlight remain on. The battery level icon in the status bar flashes when the battery is still charging or will display a full battery level when charging is complete.
When the battery is low, the display will flash a message to remind you to charge the battery.
Using the Tilt Sensor
When you pick up the remote slightly tilted, the display will automatically turn on and the keypad light up. Note: Whenever you pick up the remote from the base station, or replace it in the station, you will hear a beep. Use the Harmony Remote Software to enable/disable these features.
Selecting an Activity
View the Activities you have added by pressing the Activities button. The display will then list the Activities you have added. Press the corresponding display button next to the Activity you want to start. As a default, when you select an Activity, you will see a message on the remotes display reminding you to keep the remote pointed at your entertainment system while the Activity starts. This helps ensure that all infrared (IR) signals are properly sent. Use the Harmony Remote Software to turn on/off the Starting Activity message.

A: Date and time B: Indicator if the USB is attached C: Indicator when infrared (IR) commands are being sent to your devices D: Battery indicator (batterys power) E: Activity you are in (if applicable) The navigation bar displays information such as: F: The number of screens available in a menu, and the screen currently displayed
Displaying Help on Your Harmony Remote
From time to time when you select an Activity, the Activity may not work. This can happen when the Harmony remote sends many infrared commands to set up all your devices for an Activity, but one or more devices are not receiving some commands. The Harmony remote is then out of sync with your devices (e.g. it thinks one of your devices is on, but it is actually off). Some of the reasons the Harmony remote can become out of sync with your system are: Someone walks between the Harmony remote and your entertainment system while an Activity is starting. You point your Harmony remote away from your system while an Activity is starting. There is an object blocking the line-of-sight between your Harmony remote and the system. You are very far away from your entertainment system. You will need to use the Help button on your Harmony remote to resynchronize the remote with your devices. Before re-synchronizing, ensure the cause of the problem has been addressed. Example Remove all obstructions so that the entertainment devices can receive the infrared commands from the Harmony remote. Note: If your devices are no longer responding consistently to your Harmony remote, but were doing so before, you may need to recharge the battery. To resynchronize: 1. Press the Help button.
Page 5
2. Answer the questions on the remotes display by selecting Yes or No. If you answer no to any question, the Harmony remote will resend the necessary command and ask you the same question again. When you are done, the Harmony remote will be synchronized with your devices again.
Types of Help Available
You can customize the Help button on your Harmony remote to provide one of the following types of help: Smart help Asks questions about the devices that are on during a specific Activity. Full help Asks questions about all the devices in your system. Select Full help if you find devices arent being controlled the way you want them to and the help on the remote is not asking you questions about these devices. Use the Harmony Remote Software to select the type of help you want.
Using the Remote Assistant
Extra help is available from your remote by turning on the Remote Assistant. While the Help button helps you solve device problems within an Activity, the Remote Assistant teaches you how to use your Harmony remote. The following is an example of the type of help the Remote Assistant offers: Example If any devices are not set up correctly, press Help now. Use the Harmony Remote Software to turn on/off this feature.
Controlling Individual Devices
Device Mode
This section provides you with an overview of three modes you can use to access the specific features of each device.
Press Devices to enter device mode. Device mode gives you access to all the possible commands for each device included in your Harmony remote configuration. To access device mode you do not need to be in an Activity. However, you should never need to use Device mode during normal use of your Harmony remote. This mode should only be used to send a specific command to a specific device. You can eliminate the use of device mode by customizing your Activities.

You can customize the display for your Favorite Channels menu by adding your own icons and setting an icon to appear next to one of your Favorite Channels. Use the Harmony Remote to add your favorite channels and icons to the Harmony display.
Changing the Behavior of Buttons Within an Activity
When you select an Activity, the Harmony remote will: Turn on all the correct entertainment devices Set the device inputs correctly Set up the remotes buttons to control the Activity Based on our knowledge of how each of your devices is controlled, the Harmony remote will make its best effort to match all the buttons you need to control an Activity. However, there may be some commands you want to add to buttons or access via the display. Commands can be added to buttons quickly and easily by customizing any Activity to change the behavior of buttons. Use the Harmony remote to change the behavior of buttons.

Changing the Settings for your Harmony Remote
From within the Harmony software, click Remote Preferences, select Settings, and then click Next to change the remotes settings: Turn on/off Help on the remote/Remote Assistant (for additional information, see Displaying Help on Your Harmony Remote.) Set the backlight timing (for additional information, see Using the Tilt Sensor.) Set the time-display format. Show/Hide the Starting Activity message (for additional information, see Selecting an Activity.) Turn on/off the tilt sensor (for additional information, see Using the Tilt Sensor.)
Learning Infrared (IR) Commands
The Harmony remote can learn infrared commands from other remote controls, and should only be used in situations where the Harmony remotes infrared database does not already contain an infrared command you would like to use. Determine the device you would like to send the infrared command to: 1. From within the Harmony software, click Devices. 2. Click a device. 3. Select Learn infrared commands.
Using the Infrared Sensor
The Harmony remote has an infrared sensor at the end opposite to the USB connector. The Harmony remote uses this sensor to learn commands from original device remotes.
A: Your original remote B: Your Harmony remote C: Distance between remotes: 5-10 cm (2-5) apart The following steps outline what happens when you press a button on your original remote control: 1. The infrared sensor on the Harmony remote learns the infrared signal. 2. The Harmony remote uploads it via the USB cable (and your computers internet connection) to the Harmony remote database. 3. The Harmony remote software will try to find a matching pattern for the infrared signal. 4. If no pattern is found, the signal will be stored as-is in its original format. 5. If a pattern is found, the Harmony remote software converts the signal into a format for convenient storage. Either way, the signal is then available for you to assign to a button on your Harmony remote.
Page 10
Naming an Infrared Command
When you teach an infrared command to the Harmony remote, give the command a name. This way you can refer to this command by name in various locations of the online setup process. It is best to use the default names listed on the Learn infrared commands step so that automatic button function assignments can be applied to your Harmony remote. Example If you teach the volume button infrared commands from your original remote control, name them Volume Up and VolumeDown (i.e. with no space, and capitalization as shown). The remote software looks for commands with these names to automatically assign them to the volume up and down buttons on the Harmony remote.
Naming Conventions
When naming a command for which there is no default name on the Learn infrared commands feature, use the following naming conventions to make button assignment and sharing infrared commands easier: Do not use spaces or special characters such as /, & or * in the name. Capitalize the start of words (e.g. NextDisc, ModeDigital). Start the command name with its main function (e.g. VolumeRearUp, VolumeRearDown, VolumeFrontUp, VolumeFrontDown). This helps group related commands in lists. For infrared commands that select inputs (e.g. on a stereo receiver), start with the prefix Input. Do not name the input based on what you have connected to your device, rather name it based on what it is called on the front of the device, or on the remote control (e.g. InputAux, InputVideo1, InputTape, InputDVD, Input VCR).

Whether youre new to Harmony products or you consider yourself an expert, this User Manual provides you with the information you need to get you going.
Getting to know your Harmony 600
How your Harmony 600 works
The Harmony 600 is an Activity-based infrared (IR) universal remote control. Using Harmony software, you can set up the Harmony 600 to control up to 5 devices. The Harmony 600 delivers powerful Activity-based control using Smart State Technology. This technology allows the Harmony 600 to keep track of the devices it controls, so it always knows which of your devices are on.
Devices, inputs, and Activities
To make the most of your Harmony 600, you need to understand the following terms: devices, inputs, and Activities. Devices Devices are the components of your entertainment system. Theyre things like your TV, cable box, DVD player, or game console. Inputs Inputs are connections on the back of your devices. Inputs are used to connect your devices to each other. When you want to go from watching TV to watching a DVD or listening to music, you typically need to switch your TV and/or audio receiver to the correct input. For example, if your DVD player is connected to your TV using the HDMI 1 input, then the TV needs to be set to HDMI 1 to watch a DVD. Activities An Activity is something you do with your entertainment system, like watching TV, listening to music, or playing a game. Your Harmony remote automates Activities so that a single button turns on all the necessary devices for each Activity, and switches them to the required inputs. For example, pressing the Watch TV button might turn on your TV, your cable or satellite receiver, and your audio receiver, and switch to the correct video and audio inputs. For information on how to select an Activity, or how to switch between Activities, see Selecting an Activity on page 4.
The buttons on your Harmony 600
The buttons on the Harmony 600 may have different functions or control different devices depending on the Activity or device. For more information, see Changing buttons for a device or Activity on page 15.
The All Off button turns off all the devices in the current Activity. The Activity buttons start the appropriate Activity. The More Activities button displays a list of all Activities on the remote screen. The Help button starts the on-remote help. For more information, see Using the Help button on page 6. The arrow buttons below the screen allow you to move through various options on the remote screen. The center button below the remote screen and the side buttons beside the screen let you choose those options. The Menu button opens the menu on the screen of the appropriate device.

The channel button changes the channels. The mute button mutes the sound. The previous channel button returns you to the last channel you were on. The playback area includes play, pause, fast forward, rewind, skip and other buttons for your PVR, DVD player, or VCR. The number pad has the digits 0-9.
The enter button enters a selection from the number pad. The clear button clears an entry from the number pad. It is also used to enter the decimal place for HD channel numbers.
Whats on the Harmony 600s screen
Activities When you press an Activity button Watch TV, Watch a Movie, or Listen to Music the Activity starts, and the commands for that Activity appear on the screen. The commands that appear may apply to any of the devices that you use for that Activity. For example, if youre watching a DVD, your remote screen displays functions and commands for your DVD, your TV, and other devices you use in the Watch a DVD Activity. When you press the More Activities button, the remote screen shows all Activities you have defined. Devices When you are viewing Activities on your remotes screen, you switch to device mode by pressing the center button below Devices. The Harmony 600s screen displays a list of your devices. From this screen, you can select a device, then view the commands that are available for that device. Favorite channels If you have favorite channels set up on your Harmony 600, they will appear on the remotes screen when you start the Watch TV Activity then select Favorites. If the favorite you are looking for doesnt appear on first page, press the Next button to move to next page of favorites. IR Status Indicator The status indicator flashes in the bottom right corner whenever command is being sent from your Harmony 600.
Navigating screen options
The buttons surrounding the remotes screen allow you to navigate the screen options. The arrow buttons help you move through each page of options, while the side buttons allow you to choose an option. The center button lets you switch between Activities and devices, or return to the devices list. The upper right corner of the screen shows the current page number and how many pages there are in total.
Using your Harmony 600
Selecting an Activity
You can start an Activity by pressing the appropriate Activity button or by pressing the More Activities button and selecting one of the Activities that appear on the remotes screen. To switch to a new Activity, press the appropriate Activity button or use the More Activities button to choose another Activity. The Harmony 600 will take care of powering on the required devices, powering off the ones not needed, and changing inputs if necessary.
Using the Remote Assistant
The Harmony 600s Remote Assistant appears on the remote screen when you disconnect the remote after syncing, and when you start an Activity. It guides you through the Activity. For example, when you select the Watch TV Activity, the Remote Assistant asks you if the TV is on and if the other devices in the Activity are configured properly. You can temporarily turn off the Remote Assistant by pressing the button beside the Turn off Assistant option on the remotes screen. The Remote Assistant will reappear after the next sync.
Controlling your devices individually
In some cases, you may want to control a device individually. You may, for example, want to access a function not included in the current Activity (such as picture-inpicture). When you are in an Activity or on the More Activities screen, pressing the center button shows you a list of your devices. Choose the device you want to control. If necessary, use the arrow buttons to find the page with the desired device. Once you select the device, the Harmony 600 screen shows the commands for that device. Choose the desired command. Once youve finished, press the center button to return to Activities mode. If you find yourself regularly switching to device mode to perform a particular function, you should consider adding that function to an Activity. For more information, see Setting up Activities on page 9.
Using your favorite channels
You can set up favorite channels for your TV, or your cable or satellite receiver. For more information, see Setting up favorite channels on page 16. To select a favorite channel: 1. Press the Watch TV button. 2. On your remotes screen, select the Favorites option. Your favorite channels will appear on the screen. 3. If you have set up more than four favorite channels, they will appear on multiple pages. Use the buttons below the screen to move between pages. 4. To jump to a favorite channel, simply press the button beside the channel number.
Turning off your devices
Press the All Off button to power off all the devices used in the Activity.
You dont need to turn off devices when switching between Activities. The Harmony 600 ensures the proper devices for the Activity are on or off.
Using the Help button
Because obstacles or distance can interfere with the signals the Harmony 600 sends when it starts an Activity (for example, someone walks between your Harmony 600 and the TV when you press Watch TV, or youre very far away from the system when you start an Activity), your Harmony 600 can become out of sync with your devices.
To fix the problem, use the Help feature on your remote. 1. On the remote, press the Help button. 2. Answer the questions and follow the instructions on the Harmony 600s screen. The Harmony 600 re-sends commands to make your remote in sync with your devices. 3. To access advanced help features, press and hold the Help button for 5 seconds. If you have used the Help feature to fix the problem several times in the past, you may be asked some questions to help fix the problem permanently. When youre done with this process, the Harmony 600 will be in sync with your devices. Before pressing the Help button, be sure youve addressed the cause of the problem (for example, remove any obstacles from the line of sight).
Did that fix the problem? No Yes

3. Setting up the devices you want to control
From the Welcome screen, click Next to begin. My Harmony will walk you through the process of setting up devices. Youll be asked to provide the manufacturer name and model number for all the entertainment devices you want to control with your Harmony 600. You can use the Device worksheet on page 11 to gather the necessary information. For devices with multiple inputs (like TVs and AV receivers), youll need to note which devices are connected to them, and with which inputs. Adding new devices at a later time If you want to add additional devices after the initial setup, see Adding and changing devices on page 13.
4. Setting up Activities
After you have finished identifying your devices, you can start setting up your Activities. An Activity is something you do with your entertainment system, like watching TV, listening to music, or playing a game. Your Harmony remote automates Activities so that a single button turns on all the necessary devices for each Activity, and switches them to the required inputs. For example, pressing the Watch a Movie button might turn on your TV and your DVD player, and switch the TV to the DVD players input.

My Harmony prompts you to set up the Watch TV activity, and allows you to set up other Activities (depending on the devices you have added to your account). If you havent added enough devices to support an Activity, you wont be given an opportunity to add any. When you set up an Activity, you choose the devices that are involved in the Activity, and indicate which devices you use to control which functions. For example, when you set up the Watch TV Activity, you pick the device that changes the channels and the device that controls the volume. If the device has more than one input, My Harmony asks you which input the device uses. If youre not sure, see Determining your inputs on page 10 for more information. You may also be asked additional questions depending on your entertainment system.
5. Updating the remote
When youre finishing adding Activities, click Sync to transfer your setup information to your Harmony 600. After the remote has been updated, the setup process will prompt you to disconnect the remote from your computer and test your remote on your home entertainment system. For specific details about testing your remote, see Testing your remote on page 12.
Determining your inputs
One of the most important steps in creating your Activities for your Harmony 600 is determining which inputs your system uses for each device. If youre not sure, this section offers some suggestions on how to figure out which inputs your entertainment system uses. Inputs are connections on the back of your devices. Using inputs, you connect your devices to each other. For example, your DVD or cable box may be connected to your TV through an HDMI input. After you know how your devices are connected, you can use the information to create your Activities using My Harmony. Step 1 Turn on all your devices To determine which devices are using which inputs, you should start by turning on all the devices in your entertainment system. If possible, you should start playing something in your DVD player, CD player, VCR, etc. By having all your devices on, its easier to see how theyre connected. You can use the Device worksheet on page 11 to keep track of which devices are connected using which inputs. Step 2 Watch the TV In this step, you must use your TVs original remote control to switch between inputs. 1. Using your TVs original remote, press the input button and select each input one-at-atime. 2. For each input, note which device appears to be connected to that input. For example, if you switch to HDMI 1 and see your DVD playing, you know your DVD player is connected to HDMI 1. Step 3 Listen to the sound You need to complete this step only if you have a separate device (called an audio receiver) that manages the sound for your entertainment system. For example, you may have a home theater system or connect your TV to your stereo so that the sound comes out of your stereo speakers. You must use your audio receivers original remote control to switch between inputs. 1. Using your audio receivers original remote, press the input button and select each input one-at-a-time. 2. For each input, note which device appears to be connected to that input. For example, if you switch to OPTICAL 1 and hear the sound from your DVD playing, you know your DVD player is connected to OPTICAL 1.

Adding a passthrough device to an Activity
A passthrough device is a device that you add to your system that a signal passes through unaltered. For example, if you use your DVD recorder (or VCR) to record shows from your cable or satellite receiver, you may need to add your DVD recorder as a passthrough device to the Watch TV Activity. In these examples, the DVD recorder and the A/V switch are used as passthrough devices.
No picture? No sound? No problem!
Changing buttons for a device or Activity
You may wish to change how your remote buttons work for a particular device or Activity. For example, your TV might have a picture-in-picture feature that you would like to make available on the remote. Using My Harmony, you can quickly and easily add or customize how buttons work for any device or Activity. To change how buttons work in a device or Activity: 1. Open a browser and go to MyHarmony.com. 2. Sign into your account. 3. Follow the online instructions to change or fix buttons. You can change functions for both the fixed buttons on your Harmony 600 remote, and for the options displayed on the remotes screen. For screen options, you can change both the function and the label used to represent the function on the remotes screen.
Teaching commands using your old remote
If theres a command on your original remote that doesnt appear on your Harmony remote, or doesnt work properly, you can use your original remote to teach the command to your Harmony remote. To teach commands to your Harmony remote using your old remote: 1. Go to MyHarmony.com and sign into your account. 2. Follow the online instructions to change the buttons that appear on your remote or the options that are displayed on the remotes screen. 3. Follow the instructions to add a command that is not included on the command list, or fix one that doesnt seem to work right. 4. Follow the online instructions to teach the command to your Harmony remote.
When naming a command, Logitech suggests using the following naming conventions to make button assignment easier: Dont use spaces or special characters such as /, & or * in the name. Capitalize the first letter of each word (for example, NextDisc, ModeDigital). Start the command name with its main function (for example, VolumeRearUp, VolumeRearDown, VolumeFrontUp). This helps group related commands. Start commands that select inputs (for example, on a stereo receiver) with the prefix Input. Dont name the input based on what youve connected to your device; instead, name it according to how its connected (for example, InputHDMI1, InputHDMI2, InputVideo1, InputAux).
You can also teach commands from your original remote to the Harmony remote while you are adding a device, while fixing device settings, when adding a missing command, or when fixing a button or screen option.
Setting up favorite channels
You can set up favorite channels for your TV, or your cable or satellite receiver. If your system has more than one channel changing device, you should set up the favorite channels within your Watch TV Activity for the device you use to change channels. To set up your favorite channels: 1. Open a browser and go to MyHarmony.com. 2. Sign into your account. 3. Follow the online instructions to set up favorite channels. Your favorite channels will appear on the remotes screen when you start the Watch TV Activity then select Favorites.
Troubleshooting problems with your Harmony 600
In this section, youll find some commonly reported issues and the suggested solutions. These solutions may help you fix problems youre experiencing. If you still cannot fix the problem, refer to Getting help with your Harmony 600 on page 18. The TV doesnt go to the right input when starting Activities. From My Harmony, check your Activity to ensure it is set up to use the correct input for your TV. Next, check that the inputs are in the correct order so the Harmony 600 can cycle through each input.
When you try to add a new TV to your account, you get a message informing you that you havent entered the correct model number. The model number for many devices can be found on the front of the device. If it isnt there, it might be on a label on the back, bottom, or side of the device. The model number shouldnt be confused with the serial number for the device, or the model number of the devices remote control, as many different devices by a manufacturer can share the same remote. If you cant find a devices model number, you can use the devices original remote to teach its commands to your Harmony remote. For more information, see Teaching commands using your old remote on page 15. The On Demand command isnt on the Harmony 600 for the Watch TV Activity. You can map the command to any unused button on the Harmony 600 or on the remotes screen. The command is likely in our database, but wasnt mapped to the Activity. If were missing the command, the Harmony 600 can learn it from your original remote. For more information, see Teaching commands using your old remote on page 15.
My Harmony is unable to communicate with the Harmony 600. Ensure that the USB cable is plugged into your computer and into your remote. Ensure that you are not connecting through a USB hub. If you are, connect the cable directly to a computer USB port. Unplug the USB cable from your computer, and plug it in again. Unplug the USB cable from your remote, and plug it in again. Close your browser, start your browser again, and return to My Harmony. Plug the USB cable into a different USB port of your computer. Disable any anti-virus, firewall, or pop-up blocker program. Restart your computer.

Glossary
Activity An Activity is something you do with your entertainment system, like watching TV, listening to music, or playing a game. With your Harmony remote, you can set up an Activity so that a single button on the remote turns on the necessary devices, and switches them to the required inputs. Amplifier A stereo component that outputs to speakers, and increases the gain or level of an audio signal. An amplifier doesnt typically include a radio. Aspect ratio The ratio of image width to image height. Common ratios are 1.85:1 and 2.35:1. Television screens are usually 1.33:1 (also known as 4:3). HDTV is 1.78:1, or 16:9. A/V switch A device with several audio and video source inputs that sends a selected audio/video source input signal to an output device like speakers or a TV. Device A component in your home entertainment system. DVD recorder (DVR) A standalone unit that resembles and functions very much like a VCR. Like a VCR, DVD recorders all have AV source inputs; as well, it can record TV shows. Input Inputs are the connections on the back of your devices. Using these inputs, you connect your devices to each other. In sync The Harmony 600 knows what state all of your devices are in, such as whether they are on or off and which inputs they were last using. When it loses track of this information, it becomes out of sync. Your remote can send commands to your devices to become in sync again. IR (Infrared) Type of signal used by most remote controls. Harmony remotes can control devices that use IR for remote control. Mini-system A single unit that is some combination of the functionality of a DVD, VCR, radio, and amplifier. Also known as a home theater or home cinema. Output device A device that produces the sound or picture, for example, a TV or speakers. Passthrough A device that routes video or audio from one device to another device.
Personal Video Recorder (PVR) Contains an internal recorder and player that records and plays video without the use of a removable tape or disc. Typically PVRs can pause, rewind, instantly replay, and play slow-motion for live or recorded TV. Examples of PVR service providers are TiVo, ReplayTV, UltimateTV, and Keen PM. Many cable and satellite providers also provide PVR services and have PVRs included in some of their cable/satellite receivers. Receiver Also referred to as a tuner or a stereo receiver. A receiver can be any component that receives or tunes broadcast signals, or AM/FM radio. Typically refers to the single component that includes a preamplifier, surround processor, multi-channel amplifier, and AM/FM tuner. RF (Radio Frequency) Used by some remote controls to control devices because it doesnt have the same line-of-sight restrictions as IR (infrared) signals.
