Purl Computers Backup Getting Started Guide
with LogMeIn Backup for Security and reliability

LogMeIn Backup instantly turns your existing computer into a private backup network. After LogMeIn Backup is installed on two or more internet-connected computers, you can send backup sets to and from any of these PCs; either manually or according to a set schedule - all without worrying about firewall or router configuration.

Some Terminology

Source PC and Storage PC: All computers with LogMeIn Backup installed can be both a Source and Storage PC. Source PC refers to the machine whose data is being backed up, whereas Storage PC refers to the computer that stores the data. By default, all computers are enabled as Storage PCs, although this functionality can be switched off on a PC-by-PC basis. Backup Set: A Backup Set is a user-defined list of files and folders on the Source PC that is backed up to a specific Storage PC. A Backup Set can be given a schedule whereby the Source PC sends files and folders according to a daily, weekly, or monthly schedule, or it can simply be run manually. A Backup Set can contain anywhere from 0 to an unlimited number of Versions (see below.) Versions: In LogMeIn Backup, versioning takes place at the Backup Set level: each version in a Backup Set is essentially a snapshot of the defined files and folders at the moment of their being uploaded to the Storage PC. LogMeIn Backup only uploads files and folders that have been modified or added since the previous version was created; in other words, if a Backup Set contains 3,000 files in the My Documents folder, and 50 files have been added to or modified in the My Documents folder since the last Backup version was created, LogMeIn Backup will only send those 50 files. Within the Restore interface, however, each Version appears as one whole collection of every file in the Backup Set.
Once Billing information is confirmed, Purl Computers will email you a link, after clicking the link the installation below will begin: Getting Started: Creating Your Backup
The LogMeIn Backup installer will then launch. Within the installer, you will be able to specify: The Storage folder (where Backup Sets from other PCs are stored on the local Storage PC) The Backup History folder (where detailed logs of all backup and restore processes are stored) During installation you will be asked for a LogMeIn Backup Computer Description for your PC (Always use your account phone number), DO NOT LEAVE THIS WITH THE DEFAULT INFORMATION! Not using your account phone number will cause problems when recovering files from backup. The systems backed up can even be roaming notebook PCs: the LogMeIn gateway keeps tabs on your computers wherever they are in the world, so long as theyre connected to the internet.
LogMeIn Backup is very easy to use, and its possible to be reliably backing up your files and folders within minutes of first running it. After installation, the software will launch by default. Afterwards, you can launch the Backup Console by double-clicking the LogMeIn Backup icon in the system tray, or via the Windows Start menu. Create a Scheduled Backup Set When the software launches, youll see the Backup Console. Click on New Backup Set to launch the New Backup Set wizard:
Next, select all the files and folders that youd like to be part of this Backup Set. Click Next.
Warning: Only select known data folders like My Documents, etc. If you fail to follow these directions your backup may not complete successfully. If you have questions, just call or email us!
On the next screen, you can select the settings for this Backup Set: The Backup Set name The Storage PC youre sending the set to (this is pre-configured!) How many Versions to Keep (We recommend a maximum of 2!) Encryption: Set a password you can remember, this will be critical to retrieve your files! When youre satisfied with these settings, click Next. Were almost done! On the third and final page of the wizard, select the Backup Schedule that suits you most:
Daily backups are recommended for Backup Sets containing large numbers of files that are added and modified only in small amounts; weekly or monthly backups, on the other hand, are recommended in cases where the amount of data to be transferred is likely to be very large. Or you can simply select I will run this Backup Set manually, run the Backup Set by hand as you see fit (via the Run Backup Now option in the Backup Console), and return to the Backup Set later (via the Modify Backup Set option) to give it a schedule.
When you click Save Settings, LogMeIn Backup will create a Backup Set definition and it will appear in the Backup Console as a Backup Set with 0 Versions. When you click Save Settings and Run Backup, the wizard will close, and you will see in the Backup Console progress indicators showing the Backup in progress:

As well, an indicator in the System Tray will appear showing the progress of the backup:
This is especially useful for when the application is closed, but scheduled backups are running in the background: you can get a quick summary of how the backup is progressing, and then click the LogMeIn Backup icon in the System Tray to launch the application and get a more detailed look. When youve got a full Backup Network running on a variety of computers you own and use, the LogMeIn Backup menu can look something like this:
Restoring Files, or: When Disaster Strikes Restoring your files and folders is a very easy process. Simply go through steps 1 and 2 of Building Your Backup Network on the PC you wish to restore files to (in other words, install LogMeIn Backup on it), launch the software, select the Backup Set in question, and click Restore Data. Youll be presented with the Restore Files and Folders wizard. Here you can select the Version youd like to restore from, and even the individual files and folders youd like to restore. Make sure these selections are to your satisfaction, and click Next. On the second and final page of the Restore wizard, you have several options for where the restored files and folders will be written:
Once youre ready, click Next, and the restore progress window will appear:
Thats it! Youve backed up and restored files and folders between two PCs using LogMeIn Backup. LogMeIn Backup Feature Highlights Connect anytime, anywhere: the proven LogMeIn Gateway technology instantly connects PCs together, no matter the internet connection no configuration required Manual and Scheduled Backup: Run backups manually, or set-and-forget with daily, weekly, or monthly backups Multiple simultaneous Backups: Multiple threads can go to and from Source PCs and Storage PCs Automatic incremental file transfer: LogMeIn Backup only sends files that have been changed or added since the last Backup Set Version was created Bulletproof security: All data transferred over any network is encrypted using 256-bit SSL. Backup sets on the Storage PC can be encrypted using a 1024-bit public key. Back up Open and Locked Files: On Windows XP/Server 2003 computers, LogMeIn Backup integrates with the Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy service to copy open and locked files, such as Microsoft Outlook.pst files, databases, MS Office files and more
