BINOCULARS

FUJINON BINOCULARS

WHY FUJINON 7x50s?

The only two binoculars rated as SUPERIOR by Practical Sailor magazine, were the Fujinon Polaris and the Zeiss 7x50s (which cost about $500 more). In fact Fujinon was rated best in dim light conditions. Thanks to a proprietary zirconium oxide, electron beam coating (EBC) process, they are able to transmit an incredible 95% of the light striking their objective lens. They are the brightest binoculars in the world in critical lowlight dawn and dusk situations. Their housings are super-rugged lightweight aluminum alloy which are rubber coated. This makes the binoculars easier to hold, and helps to prevent damage if dropped. All models are 100% waterproof and nitrogen filled to prevent fogging and mold. They all carry a limited lifetime warranty. We chose the 7x50 specification because this has long been considered to be optimum for marine use. This is because of excellent light gathering and maximum magnification useable on a moving platform. You can buy cheaper binoculars, but they wont be as optically good or bright, durable, and resistant to fogging and mold. Because these binoculars will last much longer than cheap ones, they can be thought of as actually more economical in the long run. The bonus is that all the while you will be enjoying the best vision in the world.

POLARIS 7X50 BINOCULARS

Built to U.S. military specifications for optical performance, waterproofness, and durability, these are probably the very best marine binoculars in the world! In addition to their light enhancing EBC coatings, the Polaris has flat-field lenses to prevent distortion and astigmatism from the center to the edges for the best edge-to-edge sharpness of any binoculars available. The super long 23mm eye relief allows longer viewing without fatigue, and is a critical factor for those who wear glasses. It allows the eye to be further away from the eyepiece without image cutoff. The compass model features a very large, stable and accurate compass and reticle. Binocular weight is 3.3 lbs. (3.4 lbs with compass). The binoculars come with attached lens caps, and a comfortable padded neck strap. SW 4 lbs. POSEIDON 7X50 BINOCULARS

The Poseidon is essentially the same as the Polaris except that it does not have the flat field lenses, but instead has the same type of high quality lenses found on other top-of-the-line binoculars. It has the same EBC coating giving it the same 95% outstanding light transmission. It is slightly lighter in weight at 3 lbs. (3.1 lbs with compass). The eye relief is also less at 12mm, which is in the normal range for most binoculars. If you intend to wear eyeglasses while viewing, we recommend buying the Polaris instead of this model. The compass model features a very large, stable and accurate compass and reticle. The binoculars come with attached lens caps, and a comfortable padded neck strap. SW 4 lbs. Poseidon Binoculars (MTR-SX) #2406 Poseidon with Compass (MTRC-SX) #2407 (List $820) (List $950) $399 $464

NIKON OCEANPRO 7X50

Rated a best buy by Practical Sailor for its high quality and relatively low price, the OceanPro is nitrogen filled and O-ring sealed for waterproof, shockproof and fogproof performance. The binocular also incorporates a rubber armored exterior that provides a non-slip grip. These features, together with tough, lightweight polycarbonate construction, make the OceanPro durable enough for wet, rough environments. The OceanPro utilizes precision ground lenses with multiple layers of anti-reflective coatings to deliver superior brightness, enhanced resolution and critical high-contrast for low light and bad weather conditions. The large, 50mm objective lenses provide a 7.1mm exit pupil for maximum light gathering, while a diopter adjustment and large central focus knob make focus easy to achieve and maintain. Two versions of the Nikon 7x50 OceanPro are available, depending on user preference and requirements. Besides the standard version, a model is available that incorporates an illuminated compass for easy direction finding. Each model has a 7.2 degree real angle of view, which equates to a 50 degree apparent angle - true wide angle performance. The field of view for each model is 378 feet at 1,000 yards. They utilize fold-down rubber eyecups that protect the eyes from bumps in rough water conditions and provide 22.7mm of eye relief to accommodate eyeglass wearers and noneyeglass wearers alike. Weight is a relatively light 2.4 lbs. Comes with Nylon floating neck strap, lens caps, carrying case, and 25 year warranty. SW 5.0 lbs OceanPro Binoculars OceanPro with Compass #2412 #2413 $249 $299

NAUTILUS 7X50 BINOCULARS

The Nautilus is essentially the same as the Poseidon and It has the same EBC coating giving it excellent light transmission. It is slightly lighter in weight at 2.9 lbs. (3.0 lbs with compass). The eye relief is also greater at 16mm, which is at the top of the normal range for most binoculars. The compass model features a large, stable and accurate compass and reticle. The binoculars come with attached lens caps. A comfortable padded neck strap is an optional accessory. SW 4 lbs. STABILIZED BINOCULARS

IMAGE STABILIZING (IS) BINOCULARS
Many people say that buying image stabilizing (IS) binoculars ranks among the top 3 most important things they have ever bought for their boats. You will see buoys, radar contacts, and navigational hazards much farther away than with non-stabilized models. How much stabilization is needed? When binocular power increases above 8, hand tremor and platform motion begins to blur the image so that increasing magnification gives no better results. IS systems allow power to be increased without blurring. IS systems are described by the number of degrees of oscillation over which they have authority. Models with 1 of stabilization are adequate for controlling hand tremors, but not the platform motion associated with being underway in a boat, airplane or car. For these, models with up to 5of stabilization is desired. How is stabilization achieved? Models with up to 5 of stabilization do this through a battery powered system of gimbaled digital servos, and piezo-vibration sensors. This system does away with the power hungry high speed gyros in older models and allows a lighter weight. Both models shown here use the same system, have the same size and weight, and have essentially the same specifications throughout. We have seen mechanically stabilized models at half these prices, but have found them to offer no observable advantage over un-stabilized 7x50 binoculars. Specifications for both models include: eye relief-13mm, diopter adjustment-4, exit pupil-2.9mm, relative brightness-8.18, interpupillary distance-60-70mm, dimensions (wxhxd)-7.3x5.8x3.4 inches, weight-2.8 lbs. Power is from 4 AA batteries for up to 3 hours continuous use.
NIKON STABILEYES 14X40 WATERPROOF STABILIZED BINOCULARS
Nikons dual mode StabilEyes provides the power, razor sharp resolution, and rock steady hold necessary for long range viewing on land or sea. Phase correction coated prisms and fully multicoated lenses provide unparalleled optical capability, while durable, waterproof/fogproof construction makes it the ultimate optic for any situation. Its distinguishing feature is having two modes of operation. By selecting LAND mode, the binocular is optimized for use under stable conditions with 1 of authority. Switching to ONBOARD mode, gives a full 5 of authority for a moving platform. This gives better viewing on land, and conserves battery power. The polarizing and haze filter sets shown for the Techno-Stabi below will fit nicely on the StabilEyes. Comes with handsome soft neoprene carrying case. One year manufacturers warranty. THE TAMAYA SEXTANTS

The Tamaya sextants from Japan have long been popular among merchant mariners around the world. They are unique in that their construction combines the lighter weight of an aluminum frame with the slightly higher accuracy of a bronze arc (the best of both worlds). Two models are available: the Spica (MS-733), and the Jupiter (MS-833). The Jupiter is easily the most popular of the two due to its much lower price, while having practically the same specifications and construction. The Spica and the Jupiter are both full sized sextants and are supplied with a 4x40 telescope, and electric lighting. A 7x35 telescope is available as an optional extra. SW 20 lbs. Specifications
Arc Accuracy Micrometer Drum Mirrors Shades Weight -5 to +125, radius 162mm 10" (Spica), 18" for -5 to 90 (Jupiter) 1'scale, vernier to 0.2' 57x42 mm index, 57mm diameter horizon 4 index, 3 horizon 4 lbs. (Spica), 3 lbs, 12 oz. (Jupiter)
THE ASTRA III PROFESSIONAL
Just as the Astra IIIB has become world famous as the premier low cost metal sextant, the Professional Model with its low cost, high accuracy, and excellent handling qualities is destined to be the standard for professional seamen. Its construction is similar to the Tamaya sextants in that it has a bronze arc fused to an aluminum frame. This allows a higher accuracy along the arc while maintaining a lighter weight than a solid bronze or brass sextant. The handle is a new more comfortable design, and has an electrical outlet suitable for powering accessories such as the Professional Bubble Horizon. The additional weight of the bronze arc adds about 8 oz. and gives the instrument an excellent balance and heft. Except for the weight difference, accuracy, and handle improvement, it is exactly the same sextant as the basic Astra IIIB. All of the accessories shown for the Astra IIIB are applicable for this model.

These very accurately machined cylinders are used to remove the error of perpendicularity of the index mirror of the sextant. By placing the cylinders on the arc of the sextant while laying on its side, and bringing them into conjunction through the optical system, the index mirror can be adjusted to make it perfectly perpendicular to the arc. Sextants having front surface silvering on the index mirror (such as C. Plath, Cassens & Plath, Freiberger, and Astra IIIB Deluxe) benefit most from these cylinders. This is because the silvering is not exactly on the axis of rotation, and requires that your line of sight be parallel to the sextant frame when adjusting the index mirror. The cylinders come in a velour pouch and can be readily carried in the sextant case. SW 0.6 lbs. Calibrating Cylinders #1903 $29

THE LIGHTED PEN Weems & Plath
This unique pen has a small green LED tucked into its tip right next to a high quality medium ball point. Twist the switch on the top of the pen and you will be able to see what you are entering into the log without having to light up the whole cabin. Comes with a clear cap to help prevent leaving it on by accident, and also allows you to clip it to your chart or pocket if you just need a small light to see by. Lasts for hours on 2 LR44 1.5 volt batteries located in the top. SW.3 lbs. Lighted Pen #1121 $4.95
A compact accessory designed to clean any lens or coated mirror surface on your sextant, telescope, camera or binoculars. A retractable brush on one end of the pen removes loose particles of dirt. A soft cleaning pad on the other end, impregnated with a non-liquid carbon-based cleaning compound, wipes away smudges, and reduces static charge build-up. It is particularly effective in cleaning fingerprints from front surface coated mirrors. The pad also stows away in the pen. Lenspen is 7 inches long and comes with a clip that attaches to a pocket. These genuine chamois cloths are natures finest material for cleaning lenses or mirrors on sextants, binoculars, and glasses. They are soft, safe, and super absorbent for moisture, and skin oils from fingerprints. The chamois comes as a 4 x 6 inch cloth, and is stored in a 3 x 4 inch plastic pouch. They are washable, and said to actually improve with age. SW 0.1 lb Never put your sextant away without lightly wiping the glasses with a clean piece of fine soft chamois leather.

SEXTANT OIL

Since the middle of the last century, the finest instrument oils were derived from high-grade whale oil. Such oils had high viscosity and superb resistance to both oxidation and gumming. They also had superior film strength on metal surfaces. Today, Federal law prohibits use of marine mammal oils. Fortunately, it has been found that jojoba beans produce oil of a similar molecular structure. This oil has been combined with synthetics to produce Nye Clock Oil 140B. It brings back the qualities of the old whale oil, and is the finest instrument oil available today. It is highly recommended for sextant lubrication. It is packaged in a 1/4-ounce bottle. WORLD BAND RADIO

TIME SIGNALS
Having the correct time is important in all navigation, but is paramount for celestial. Determining longitude has always been the strictest test of timekeeping which is today improved by quartz clocks and worldwide broadcast time signals. These time signals are broadcast on shortwave frequencies of 2.5, 5, 10, 15, and 20 MHz in the USA, and a few others in the rest of the world. In the past, there have been inexpensive radios whose crystal settings have been dedicated to receiving just these frequencies. These radios are no longer available, but digital tuning technology (like your car radio that can seek and scan) has made ordinary shortwave radios capable of receiving these signals reliably. The world band radios in this catalog are all suitable for this purpose. As an alternative, one may phone the U.S. Naval Observatory at the following number, and hear a transcription of the time signals or visit our web site to view the time as a link from them.
CHOOSING A WORLD BAND RADIO
The job for a world band radio is tough. Crowded signals traveling long distances require proper equipment for good reception. Yet, there is a global free-for-all in the manufacturing and merchandising of these radios. Some do an excellent job, and some are sold on the basis of good looks while having terrible performance. The following points should be considered in making your selection. 1. PRICE- Do not buy a cheap radio! Expect to pay a decent price for good equipment. Choose from those which are rated highly by impartial reviews. 2. SIZE- This depends on how you will use it. Small is great for travel, but poor for the home. Large radios usually sound better and have more features than small ones, but are poor for travel. 3. TUNING- Digital tuning, and selective analog tuning are sensible choices, and is all that we offer. The older analog tuners that whistle and wow, take time, and make stations hard to find, should be avoided. 4. SINGLE SIDEBAND (SSB)- This is unimportant for ordinary program listening, but is necessary for receiving shortwave utility, ham signals, and air-to-ground, and shipto-shore stations. 5. ANTENNA- Usually, the built-in telescoping antenna that comes with your portable is all you will need; unless you live in a harder to receive-in area such as the North American midwest, or west. Here you may consider an external clip-on antenna which are widely available.

Always be prepared for an emergency, whether from natural disaster or power outage. The Emergency radio will keep you in touch with 3 sources of power. Flip out the hand crank, give it 60 turns, and enjoy up to one hour of play time; plug in an AC adapter (not included); or put in 3 AA batteries (also not included). It charges most cell phones too! Built for both indoor and outdoor use, it comes with a nylon carrying case with strap. Although NOT crystal controlled tuning, it has AM/FM/SW1/SW2 bands with fine tuning. THE COMMODORE TELLTALE COMPASS Robert E. White Instruments
Youve anchored for the night in a new harbor. Down below in your bunk, you listen to the rain and the rising wind. The boat is restless and the rigging is starting to sing. Has the wind direction shifted? Will your anchor drag? Must you leave the warmth of your bed to go on deck? Not with a Telltale Compass mounted over your berth. Telltale compasses satisfy sailors everywhere who wonder precisely what is happening when offwatch; whether it is windshifts at anchor, autopilot performance, or simply checking on the helmsman. Unfortunately they have been, until now, hard to find. The Commodore is solidly constructed of brass, copper and bronze, and is guaranteed for 3 years. It comes as shown with a polished brass gimbal ring and mounting bracket. Diameter of gimbal ring is 4 3/4 inches. Height (compass card to overhead) is 3 5/8 inches. Wgt 2.5 lbs. SW 5.0 lbs. KVH DATASCOPE ON SEXTANT (Bracket-inset)
The revolutionary KVH DataScope has won acceptance as one of the most useful optical devices for the marine environment. Now, it can be mated to the marine sextant. And what a marriage it is! The DataScope's time, bearing, and recording capabilities are just what celestial navigators have always wanted. The DataScope itself functions as a fluxgate compass, rangefinder, chronometer, and 5.3x30 monocular telescope. The transparent digital reticle superimposes these functions as a "heads-up" display onto your field of view. You get all the information you need without taking your eyes off the target. Or, if you want, you can leave the screen blank. The built in memory stores up to 9 bearings and times for later plotting. The Mounting Bracket brings the DataScope to the sextant, and provides two major benefits: star finding, and timekeeping. To find a star for an observation, one sets the star's altitude on the sextant, then pans the horizon until the precalculated azimuth is seen in the compass mode. The star will then be seen in the center of the field of view. Then, switching to the chronometer mode with the touch of a button, the time of sight can be recorded. Several options exist here too. By watching the time in the field of view, one can shoot on an even minute, thus simplifying computational procedures, or one can shoot at will and electronically record the time for later analysis. The mounting bracket gently engages each end of the DataScope without having to alter or make any marks on it. Once done, the ensemble is quickly installed on the sextant in place of the regular telescope. It may be used apart from the sextant for coastal navigation without disengaging the mounting bracket from the DataScope KVH DataScope #1509 $327 The Mounting Bracket fits most modern metal sextants, but not the Cassens & DataScope Carrying Case #1509C $ 15 Plath model on which the arm mounted lighting unit conflicts with the bracket. Check DataScope Mounting Bracket #1510 $ 80 the scope fork diagram on page 11 to be sure your sextant will accept the Bracket. SW Datascope 2 lbs, Bracket 0.5 lbs.

PLOTTING TOOLS

CHOICES IN PLOTTING TOOLS
Beginners typically ask which plotting tools they need. Its a good question, because the available range of tool types is greater than one would likely need. For example, parallel rules, rolling plotters, course plotters, triangles and plotting board pantographs all do essentially the same thing; that is enable you to draw a line in a prescribed direction on a chart. Dividers and compasses measure distances on charts. As facility and experience is acquired, navigators will gravitate toward one tool or another to fit individual preferences, navigation station constraints, or desired accuracy. Our suggestions for the beginner are as follows below. Those with experience will have their own idea of what they want. An economy minded beginner might want to start with our chart kit (Item #4605). This will allow exposure to the greatest number of tools for the least cost. Once a preference is developed, higher quality versions can be bought, and the chart kit used for spares. An alternative would be to buy either the parallel rules (Item #4603) or the course plotter (Item #4304), and the ultra-light dividers (Item #4206).

BASIC PLOTTING TOOLS

PLOTTING AIDS
BASIC PLOTTING TOOLS 1. PORTLAND COURSE PLOTTER
Previously known as the Breton Plotter, the movable compass rose grid is aligned on the chart parallels, and automatically sets the drawing edges on the course bearing required. Variation can be pre-set on the movable rose for ease in plotting compass bearings. The edges are graduated in inches and centimeters. The large numbers make the plotter easy to use under difficult conditions. SW 0.6 lbs. Portland Course Plotter #6250 $19.50

NAVIGATION TRIANGLES

2. P-72 COURSE PLOTTER
Navigation triangles are normally used as a pair (one against the other) in order to transfer a directional line to a different place on a chart. In this way, they perform similar to parallel rules. Although some triangles are unmarked, others (such as shown here) have protractors imprinted on them. The protractor can aid in drawing a bearing line directly on the chart, and the 90 angle can be useful in constructing lines of position.

THE SOFT-SIDED COOLER
FRESH WAVE ODOR CONTROL OMI Industries
A friend gave us a jar of this recently, and frankly we thought about pitching it because we didnt want some sweet smelling, odor masking chemical that we have all encountered before. Boy, were we surprised! Yes, it smelled good up close and freshly opened, but following the instructions to open the jar and forget it we were amazed. Our musty basement wasnt musty anymore, and it didnt smell sweet either. Later we investigated and found that it didnt just mask odors it captured them! We found out that this was a serious, chemically effective method to remove odors that can be used not only in homes, boats, and autos, but in wide industrial applications as well. It is perfect for odors from cigarettes, cooking, bathrooms, diesel fuel, pets and more. As the molecules of Fresh Wave sublime into the air, they electrostatically attach to odor molecules and neutralize them. The speed with which odor is removed depends on the rate of air contact. A jar of Fresh Wave gel may be opened and placed in a chronically odorous place, and left. Rate of air contact wont be great, but it works 24 hours a day. Pearls of the gel are available in small porous pouches which may be placed under a car seat, pantry, or boat. In candle form, the material is transported more quickly into the air and is great for a stovetop, or where fish may be handled. A spray is the fastestt way to inject the material into the air and is a quick solution to the biggest odor problems. Fresh Wave is completely non-hazardous, and safe for humans, pets, and the environment. SW 2 lbs. Fresh Wave Jar (Gel) Fresh Wave Pearls (5 pouches) Fresh Wave Candle Fresh Wave Spray (8 oz.) You used to see these at most boat shows, but lately they have been absent. What a shame, because they are far and away the best ways to keep things cold (or hot). Some of their many benefits are that they: Actually perform better than hard-sided coolers. Do not leak ever! Can be rolled up and put into your luggage for use later. Can be nested for storage, ie. the 6, 12, and 24 packs. Give extreme performance, with one inside the other. Can even be used as luggage. Take your clean clothes going, bring your dirty clothes (even wet ones) back, and you still have a cooler while you are there.

A quick, easy, and thorough explanation of celestial navigation, with realistically worked examples. This book grew out of the authors many years as a teacher of navigation. It deals with the nautical almanac and HO-249 as the method of sight reduction. The only pre-requisite for the text is the ability to add and subtract. SC, 1986, 142 pages. SW 1 lb.
This is the shortest book on celestial navigation we know of. Even so, nothing essential is left out. There have always been two widely divergent approaches to teaching celestial: provide a long list of rules for making computations and plots; or explain the theory and mathematics so that the reader gains a thorough understanding, and can invent as he goes. This book strikes the perfect balance between the two by explaining theory in an uncomplicated way, and omitting unnecessary detail. With excellent pictures and diagrams, this book is one of the best intermediate starting books available, and is certainly the best refresher to be had. We also have frequently recommended this book as a second book, where a different approach is desired. Uses HO-249. SC,2001, 64 pages SW 0.5 lbs.
