K-mount Heritage
PENTAX has manufactured over 24 million lenses in the last six decades. For every assignment, we believe there needs to be a lens that matches each photographers style amateur and professional alike. PENTAX DSLR bodies offer backward compatibility with each and every one of these lenses.* Choose from our assortment of new DAH, DA Limited and DA lenses specifically designed for use with PENTAX digital SLRs or pull a favorite PENTAX lens from the camera bag. Whichever lens is used, whether the most recent lenses or a classic screw mount, it will faithfully capture the image desired. *With adapter for screw mount and 645/67 lenses. solves one of the oldest photographic problems: blur caused by handheld camera shake. The K Series Digital SLRs produce sharp photos in challenging situations without having to use a tripod. Hand-held photography is now possible with long telephoto lenses or when long exposure times are required due to poor lighting. The PENTAX Shake Reduction system is integrated into the camera body and is independent of the lens in use. The system ensures that at the moment of exposure the compensating movement of the image sensor provides blur-free pictures. The advantage is obvious: you may increase your handheld shooting by 2.5 to 4 stops. PENTAX owns over 30 patents for the SR system, which uses a ball-bearing-mounted oscillator unit with four electromagnets that position the free-floating image sensor. Angular velocity sensors detect camera movement and relay the amount of compensation necessary to the electromagnets that move the sensor to compensate for any shake.

SDM Lens Compatibility
PENTAX DAH Series
K-mount compatibility extends to the high performance smc PENTAX DAH series of lenses. The PENTAX-DAH series delivers the highest level of optical quality and reflects the PENTAX commitment to deliver the ultimate images in digital photography. Bringing together advanced optical technologies, special optical-glass elements and original lens coatings, these interchangeable lenses are superior in terms of contrast, clarity and edge-to-edge sharpness. Each PENTAX DAH series lens feature a tightly sealed, weather-resistant and dust-resistant construction to enhance durability for use in rain or dusty conditions making each a perfect companion for the weather-sealed PENTAX digital SLR. The lenses also feature the PENTAX original Quick-Shift Focus System for instant switching to manual focus operation and PENTAX original SP (Super Protect) coating to repel dust, water and grease. A new SDM system has been incorporated for smoother, quieter autofocus operation using a built-in supersonic motor.
Prime image Processing
The Pentax Real IMage Engine (PRIME) was developed specifically by PENTAX for our cameras in order to meet the performance requirements of higher resolution sensors. The PRIME engine converts the digital signal into the image you desire by assuring truer color tones, a wider dynamic range, and natural looking high ISO images. Ultimately, PRIME provides beautiful, natural results similar to what you see shooting with film. By allowing
Compatibility with SDM lenses that offer silent, accurate auto focus and weather resistance.
customization of the image, the advanced circuitry frees you to focus on the image and capture the perfect shot.
Custom Image Modes
The Custom Image modes on the K20D and K200D give you superior control of how the PRIME processor develops images. These modes apply saturation, hue, contrast and sharpness settings to JPEG images, and give a starting point for RAW image development. There is a choice of six Custom Image modes which include: Bright gives increased saturation, hue, sharpness and contrast for images that are a bit more elaborate or colorful straight from the camera. Natural makes no adjustment to image parameters. This is perfect for photographers who want to maximize an image for post capture manipulation. Portrait decreases contrast and sharpness to give soft, natural skin tones. Landscape increases saturation, contrast and sharpness for beautiful images of the natural world. Vibrant maximizes all parameters to give the brightest colors and enhanced sharpness for the most vivid scenes. B&W mimics the effects of black and white photography, including the effects of color filters. It even adds an infra red filter effect for dramatic monochrome scenes. Plus, each of the Custom Image modes can be further modified to meet your needs. All settings are clearly displayed on the LCD screen with a radar display showing how the settings affect each color.
Dust Removal
Behind the Dust Removal designation lays an entire system unto itself. The surface of the low pass filter is sealed with a nanotechnology based fluorine coating. This ensures that dust has a difficult time adhering to the sensor surface. Dust that may remain on the surface is shaken off when the SR system shifts the CCD at high speed. The dust that is shaken off the CCD, then falls onto an adhesive sheet eliminating any possibility of its returning to the CCD surface. Dust flecks are now a thing of the past, along with annoying and time consuming retouching work.
Dust Alert
Occasionally, especially when shooting in humid conditions, the Dust Removal system will not purge all dust specks. If you are shooting in extremely dusty or dirty conditions, the new Dust Alert system will save you from time consuming retouching. This system analyzes the sensor to determine if and where any dust remains after the Dust Removal system is activated. The results are displayed on the LCD screen, showing exactly where any dust remains. The image is reversed so you can quickly pinpoint and remove dust from the sensor itself.
11-point Auto Focus
The K-Series features an 11-point autofocus system. In automatic operation (AUTO) the camera recognizes which object is nearest and chooses that object as the main focus point. For more direct control, select any of the 11 points individually. It is also possible to simply select the center of the image as your main point of focus. With continuous autofocus, the focus adjusts as your subject moves within the frame, or should you prefer more direct control, you may always focus manually.
Flexible RAW Button
The RAW button on PENTAX DSLR bodies allows you to quickly change your file format while shooting without having to navigate through an extensive series of menus. You may customize this button to switch to your preferred format and to either remain at that setting, or remain there for only one exposure.
16-segment Metering
The K-Series easily handles even the most difficult lighting conditions with its 16-segment metering system. The system will accurately assess the balance between the bright and dark areas within the segments automatically, or you may opt for center weighted or spot metering.
Advanced photography involves a serious passion for developing your own ideas and experimenting with approach, subjects and technique. The PENTAX K20D builds on the technology of the award winning K10D and offers the highest resolution camera in the advanced photo enthusiast category with a number of customizable features that are ideal for the more experienced shooter.
The Next Generation
In designing the K20D Digital SLR, PENTAX made the significant transition to a higher resolution 14.6 megapixel sensor, rivaling the detail previously only found in images captured with 35mm film. This considerable gain offers 50 percent more resolution than 10 megapixel sensors, and 20 percent more resolution than 12 megapixel sensors used by our competition. Noise is minimized and maximum sensitivity is achieved by using peripheral circuitry merely 0.13 micro meters thin. This allows the photo diodes in each pixel of the sensor to be maximized at over 40 percent of the total pixel area (typically only 30-35 percent in similar sensors from other manufacturers). It also allows a more direct light path to assure every detail is captured.
14.6 CMOS Sensor
CMOS, or complementary metal-oxide-semiconductors, are a major class of integrated circuits, and CMOS technology is used in a number of electronics including image sensors. Two important characteristics of CMOS devices are high noise immunity and low power consumption.
Unique Exposure Modes
Expect the right exposures with the settings you want. The K20D presents multiple options for automatic exposure. The Program Automatic mode offers Hyper Program to instantly change the shutter speed or aperture on the fly. When you change either of these settings, the other exposure parameters automatically change accordingly for proper exposure. The Sensitivity-Priority AE (Sv) mode is designed to automatically select the optimum combination of aperture and shutter speed for a user selected sensitivity. In the SV mode you may shift the sensitivity simply by turning a dial. The Shutter-Priority (Tv) mode lets you choose the optimal shutter speed and the Aperture-Priority (Av) mode lets you select the appropriate aperture. Another exposure mode offered by the K20D is Shutter & AperturePriority AE (TAv), which is designed to automatically select the most appropriate sensitivity for a user-selected shutter speed and aperture combination. Plus, you may choose from Manual (M), Bulb (B) and X-sync (X) settings for even more versatility, or the USER setting that allows you to preset your preferred parameters. All exposure adjustments are accessible through two ergonomically placed dials on the front and the back of the camera. If you are working with PENTAX F-, FA-, DA- or DFA-series lenses, you can benefit from the MTF data: a microchip in the lens passes information to the camera regarding the optically optimal and lens-specific aperture to use.
2.7 inch
even review two images side by side. The large monitor allows for large letters, digits and icons on the menu screens to facilitate menu confirmation and camera operations.
ISO Adjustment
The K20D features an auto sensitivity control function, which automatically sets the optimum standard output sensitivity up to ISO 6400 in the Expanded Sensitivity setting, based on such data as the subjects brightness level and the lens focal length. You have full control of the range of auto sensitivities available. Or, you can manually select the desired sensitivity.
Live View
With the K20Ds CMOS sensor a Live View is possible on the large, 2.7 inch LCD monitor. This allows you to see the full image area and confirm your composition. A grid display can be engaged to help assure the perfect arrangement of your image. Auto focus can be activated by simply pressing the AF button on the back of the camera, and then details can be verified with a 4X or 8X zoom function.
Enlargement of Dynamic Range
The dynamic range enlargement function of the K20D allows you to better emulate the results you typically find only with images captured on film. It does this by increasing the dynamic range by 200 percent to better capture details in highlight areas of an image.
Enlarged Menu
PENTAX offers two improvements in the menu of the PENTAX K20D. The new scrolling menu items offer you a complete description of each menu option and the function it provides, while an enlarged letter option allows you to boost the font or letter size by 50 percent vertically for easy viewing.
Custom Functions
The K20D is fully customizable to meet your individual shooting needs. You have access to 36 options with 93 settings to give you complete control over your camera. These include the ability to reprogram the e-dials to your shooting style the type of preview, whether Live View, Digital Preview, or a traditional depth-of-field preview and the program line used by the cameras metering system.

Designed with photographers in mind, every dial and button is carefully placed to assure superior ergonomics and ease of use. Whether setting up the camera at the beginning of a shoot, or shifting settings on the fly, the K20D is designed to accommodate your changes with the minimum amount of effort.
Focus Adjustment
PENTAXs digital specific DA Series of lenses are tuned to properly focus with all PENTAX bodies. However, the time tested K-mount allows you to use any PENTAX lens ever produced. Some older lenses may produce backor front-focused images. The K20Ds AF Adjustment function allows you to adjust the focus position for 20 different lenses.

The PENTAX K200D offers an easy-to-use interface while incorporating advanced imaging technology from the award winning K10D. This camera invites newer users to grow and develop photography skills as they learn and become more passionate about their hobby.
10.2 MP CCD
The 23.5 x 15.7 mm CCD sensor records photos with a resolution of up to 10.2 megapixels. This is enough for you to produce truly astounding prints even at 20x30 inches or more without difficulty. The high resolution sensor also allows photos to be cropped so that your composition may be perfected. High resolution combines with the DDR2 buffer memory to give quick capture rates up to 2.8 frames per second. This assures that you will not miss the fine details of every special moment.
Auto Picture, Scene and SV Modes
The K200D offers the PENTAX-developed Auto Picture mode and a Scene mode pallet. The Auto Picture mode automatically and instantly selects one of the four Picture modes including Portrait, Landscape and Macro by calculating various photographic factors to assure optimum results. The Scene mode allows the photographer to select from eight modes specialized for conditions such as Night Scene, Portrait, Sunset, or Pet mode. The photographer chooses the mode to match the subject and scene and the camera automatically selects the proper exposure, white balance, and other settings for superior results. The Sensitivity-Priority AE (Sv) mode is designed to automatically select the optimum combination of aperture and shutter speed for a user selected sensitivity. In the SV mode you may shift the sensitivity simply by turning a dial.
The K200D features an auto sensitivity control function, which automatically sets the optimum standard output sensitivity, up to ISO 1600, based on such data as the subjects brightness level and the lens focal length. Since this function allows the use of higher shutter speeds in poor lighting situations (such as indoor sports events and night scenes), it helps the photographer to effectively reduce camera shake and help prevent blurred images.
Enlarged Dynamic Range
For those times you want to capture the maximum amount of detail in an image, the K200D offers a dynamic range enlargement function. This function brings out the detail in highlighted portions of your image, while maintaining detail in darker areas.
Continuous Shooting
To track the movement of an active subject or capture a sequence of the subjects expressions, the K200D offers a continuous shooting mode that allows the photographer to capture multiple images at a maximum speed of approximately 2.8 images per second.
Penta-mirror Viewfinder
The K200D features a lightweight penta-mirror viewfinder, which combines PENTAX-original finder optics with a Natural-Bright-Matte II focusing screen to deliver a bright, clear subject image with 0.85X magnification and 96 percent field of view.

Lens Features
Digital sensors are perfectly flat, which requires a higher level of precision when PENTAX designs lenses. This means developing lenses that have the optimal lens curvature, particularly the last lens element before the sensor. The application of multiple lens coatings, such as the PENTAX original smc coating and ghostless coatings, is necessary to prevent external and internal reflections to capture optimal detail even in the most difficult lighting conditions. The effects of chromatic and spherical aberrations are minimized through the use of ED and aspherical glass elements. All these technologies are combined to create lenses that will give the highest level of detail with the high resolution sensors used in PENTAX digital SLR bodies.

The picture storage capacity (flash use 50%) is based on measuring conditions in accordance with CIPA standards and the others are based on PENTAX measuring conditions. Some deviation from the above figures may occur in actual use depending on shooting mode and shooting conditions.
Battery performance temporarily decreases as the temperature decreases. When using the camera in cold climates, have extra batteries on hand and keep them warm in your pocket. Battery performance will return to normal when returned to room temperature. Have extra batteries ready when traveling overseas, taking pictures in cold climates, or when you will be taking a lot of pictures. If usage time is reduced even when properly charged, the battery has reached the end of its usage span. Install a new battery in the camera.
Recorded Pixels and Quality Level
When the File Format is JPEG
Choose the number of pixels (size) and quality level (JPEG data compression rate) of pictures according to how you intend to use the pictures you have taken. Pictures with larger recorded pixels or more Es are clearer when printed. The number of pictures that can be taken (the number of pictures that can be recorded on an SD Memory Card) decreases with larger file sizes. The quality of the captured photo or printed picture depends on the quality level, exposure control, resolution of the printer and a variety of other factors so you do not need to select more than the required number of pixels. For example, to print in postcard size, i (18241216) is adequate. Set the appropriate recorded size and quality level depending on purpose. Choose the appropriate number of recorded pixels and quality level for JPEG images on the [A Rec. Mode] menu. 1Setting the JPEG Recorded Pixels (p.156) 1Setting the JPEG Quality Level (p.157) JPEG Recorded Pixels, JPEG Quality and Approximate Image Storage Capacity

The above table shows the approximate image storage capacity when using a 512 MB SD Memory Card. The above figures may vary depending on the subject, shooting conditions, shooting mode and SD Memory Card, etc.
When the number of storable images exceeds 500, captured images are divided into folders of 500 images each. However, in Auto Bracket, images will be stored in the same folder until shooting is completed, even if the number of images exceeds 500.
When the File Format is RAW
With u, you can record in the versatile JPEG format or the high quality and editable RAW format. For RAW file format, you can select the PENTAX original PEF format or general-purpose DNG (Digital Negative) format designed by Adobe Systems. On a 512 MB SD Memory Card, you can record up to 20 images in PEF format or DNG format. 1Setting the File Format (p.158)
Adjusting the Viewfinder Diopter
Adjust the viewfinder to suit your eyesight. If it is difficult to see the viewfinder image clearly, slide the diopter adjustment lever sideways. You can adjust the diopter from approximately 2.5m-1 to +1.5m-1.
Look through the viewfinder and point the camera at a white wall or other bright and consistent surface. Slide the diopter adjustment lever left or right.
Adjust the lever until the AF frame in the viewfinder is focused.
AF frame The FP Eyecup is attached to the viewfinder portion when camera leaves the factory. Diopter adjustment is available with the FP Eyecup attached. However, adjustment is easier with the eyecup removed. To remove the FP Eyecup, press in one side and pull it out in the direction of the arrow. To attach the FP Eyecup, align it with the groove on the viewfinder eyepiece and push it into position. If it is difficult to see the viewfinder image clearly even if you set the diopter adjustment lever, use the diopter correction lens adapter M. However, the eyecup must be removed to use this adapter. (p.258)
This chapter explains basic operations for shooting by setting mode dial to Green mode (automatic exposure according to the Normal program line) to ensure successful capturing. For information about advanced functions and settings for taking pictures, refer to chapter 4 and onward.

Basic Shooting Operation
Holding the Camera
How you hold the camera is important when taking pictures. Hold the camera firmly with both hands. Press the shutter release button gently when taking a picture. 3
Horizontal position Vertical position To reduce camera shake, support your body or the camera on a solid object such as a table, tree, or wall. Although there are individual differences among photographers, the shutter speed for a handheld camera is generally 1/(focal length 1.5). For example, it is 1/75 of a second for a focal length of 50 mm and 1/150 of a second for 100 mm. Use a tripod or the Shake Reduction function (p.65) when using a lower shutter speed. When using a telephoto lens, a tripod that is heavier than the total weight of the camera and lens is recommended to avoid camera shake. Do not use the Shake Reduction function when using the camera on a tripod.

Setting the Exposure
Effect of Aperture and Shutter Speed
Correct exposure of the subject is determined by the combination of shutter speed and aperture setting. There are many correct combinations of shutter speed and aperture for a particular subject. Different combinations produce different effects.
Effect of Shutter Speed
The shutter speed determines the length of time that light is allowed to strike the CMOS sensor. Using slower shutter speed If the subject is moving, the image will be blurred because the shutter is open longer. It is possible to enhance the effect of motion (rivers, waterfalls, waves, etc.) by intentionally using a slower shutter speed. Using faster shutter speed Choosing a faster shutter speed will allow freezing the action of a moving subject. A faster shutter speed also helps preventing camera shake.
Effect of Aperture
Adjust the amount of light hitting the CMOS sensor by changing the aperture. Opening the aperture (reduce the aperture value) Objects closer and farther than the focused subject will be more out of focus. For instance, if you take a picture of a flower against a landscape with the aperture open, the landscape in front and behind the flower will be blurred, emphasizing only the flower. Closing the aperture (increase the aperture value) The range in focus expands forward and backward. For instance, if you take a picture of a flower against a landscape with the aperture narrowed, the landscape in front and behind the flower will be in focus.
Depth of Field
The aperture and shutter speed are automatically adjusted to the appropriate exposure at that moment if the Green button is pressed in a (Hyper-manual) mode. You can choose from the following three adjustment methods in [26. Green button in L & a] in the [A Custom Setting] menu.
Shutter speed is adjusted to appropriate exposure according to lens aperture when lens aperture is not set to the s position. 1Notes on [36. Using Aperture Ring] (p.251)
Using the p (Bulb) Mode
This mode is useful for the long exposures required for shooting night scenes and fireworks. The shutter remains open as long as the shutter release button is kept pressed.
Set the mode dial to p.
EV compensation, Continuous shooting and Exposure Bracket are not available in p (Bulb) mode. The longer the exposure time, the greater noise in the captured image.
Turn the rear e-dial to adjust the aperture value. Set the aperture value in increments of 1/2 EV or 1/3 EV. Set in [2. EV Steps] in the [A Custom Setting] menu. (p.101) The Shake Reduction function is automatically turned off when exposure mode is set to p (Bulb) mode. Use a sturdy tripod and the cable switch CS-205 (optional) to prevent camera shake when using p (Bulb) mode. Connect the cable switch to the cable switch terminal (p.17). Bulb shooting is available when using the remote control shooting mode (p.125). The shutter remains open as long as the shutter release button of the optional remote control is held down. When the sensitivity is set to [AUTO] and exposure mode is set to p (Bulb) mode, the sensitivity is the lowest sensitivity set in Setting the Range of Automatic Correction in AUTO (p.78). When the exposure mode is set to p (Bulb), the upper sensitivity limit is ISO 1600. There is no limit on exposure time for Bulb shooting. However, we recommend using the AC adapter D-AC50 (optional) when shooting with a long exposure setting as the battery is used while the shutter remains open.
Using the M (Flash X-Sync Speed) Mode
The shutter speed is locked at 1/180 seconds. Use this when using an External flash that does not automatically change the shutter speed.
Set the mode dial to M.
Turn the rear e-dial to adjust the aperture value. Press the Green button to retain the shutter speed at 1/180 sec and automatically adjust the aperture. When the sensitivity is set to [AUTO] and exposure mode is set to M (Flash X-sync speed) mode, the sensitivity is the lowest sensitivity set in Setting the Range of Automatic Correction in AUTO (p.78).
Selecting the Metering Method
Choose the part of the screen to use for measuring brightness and determining exposure. L (Multi-segment metering), M (Center-weighted metering) or N (Spot metering) mode can be selected. The factory default setting is L (Multi-segment metering).
Multi-segment Centerweighted Spot Metering
Segments the viewfinder in 16 parts, meters each portion and determines the appropriate exposure. Measures the entire viewfinder with an emphasis on the center and determines the exposure. Measures only the center of the viewfinder and determines exposure.
Set with the metering mode lever. (p.19)
Using the Multi-Segment Metering
The scene in the viewfinder is metered in 16 different zones as shown in the illustration when using the multi-segment metering. Even in backlit locations, this mode automatically determines what level of brightness is in which portion and automatically adjusts exposure.
The center-weighted metering mode is automatically set even if you select the multi-segment metering mode when using a lens other than a DA, D FA, FA J, FA, F or A lens, or when lens aperture ring is set at other than s. (Can only be used if permission is set in [36. Using aperture ring] (p.75) in the [A Custom Setting] menu.)
99 Linking AF Point and AE During Multi-Segment Metering
In [7. Link AF Point and AE] (p.73) of the [A Custom Setting] menu, you can link the exposure and AF point in the focusing area during multi-segment metering. The default setting is [Off].
Off On Exposure is set separately from AF point. Exposure is set in accordance with AF point.
Using the Center-Weighted Metering
Metering is weighted at the center of the screen. Use this metering when you want to compensate the exposure by experience, instead of leaving it to the camera. The illustration shows that sensitivity increases as the pattern height increases (center). This mode does not automatically compensate for backlit scenes. 4
Using the Spot Metering
With spot metering, brightness is measured only within a limited area at the center of the screen as shown in the illustration. You can use this in combination with the AE lock (p.102) when the subject is extremely small and proper exposure is difficult to obtain.
Setting the Meter Operating Time
Sets the exposure metering time in [5. Meter Operating Time] (p.73) in the [A Custom Setting] menu. The default setting is [10 sec].
sec 3 sec 30 sec Sets exposure metering timer to 10 seconds. Sets exposure metering timer to 3 seconds. Sets exposure metering timer to 30 seconds.
Adjusting the Exposure
This allows you to deliberately overexpose (brighten) or under-expose (darken) your picture. Select 1/2 EV or 1/3 EV in [2. EV Steps] in the [A Custom Setting] menu. (p.101) You can adjust the EV Compensation from 3 to +3 (EV) in increments of 1/2 EV or 2 to +2 (EV) in increments of 1/3 EV.
Set the compensation with the front e-dial while the m button is pressed.

* Set interval of steps in [2. EV Steps] in the [A Custom Setting] menu. (p.101)
Turn the rear e-dial to set [Flash Mode] in the Fn menu (p.75).
The flash output cannot be compensated in Green mode. N appears in the LCD panel and the viewfinder during flash exposure compensation. (p.27) If the maximum flash output is exceeded when corrected to the plus (+) side, no compensation will be effective. Compensating to the minus () side may not effect the image if the subject is too close, aperture is low or sensitivity is high. This flash compensation is also effective for external flash units which support P-TTL auto flash mode. Pressing the Green button on the [Flash Mode] menu returns the flash exposure compensation to the default setting (0.0).
Allowing Shooting while Charging Flash
You can set to enable shooting while flash is being charged. Set [On] for [28. Release when Charging] in the [A Custom Setting] menu (p.74). Pictures cannot be taken while the flash is charging by default.

Flash Characteristics in Each Exposure Mode
Using the Flash in b (Shutter Priority) Mode
When taking a moving subject, you can use the flash to change the blur effect. Any desired shutter speed 1/180 sec. or slower can be set for taking a flash photograph. The aperture value automatically changes according to the ambient brightness. The shutter speed is locked at 1/180 sec. when lens other than DA, D FA, FA J, FA, F or A is used.
Using the Histogram
A histogram shows the brightness distribution of an image. The horizontal axis represents brightness (dark at the left and bright at the right) and the vertical axis represents the number of pixels. The u features two histogram (Dark) Brightness (Bright) displays. The Brightness histogram Dark portions Bright portions shows the distribution of brightness and the RGB histogram shows the distribution of color intensity. 1 Histogram Display (p.26) The shape of the histogram before and after shooting tells you whether the brightness and contrast are correct or not, and lets you decide if you need to use EV compensation and take the picture again.
